Fun times as a cloth character when you get 1 hit by an arrow, in the knee. Another way to fix that is set experience gained to 25% with skyre mod. Makes the game so much more fun to me.

Except if you don't like being bossed around by elves. Although for most reasonable characters there is really no reason to join any side. Maybe if you are a nord you should care, but pretty much all of my characters have absolutely no interest in randomly getting involved in a civil war in which they don't like either side. The game starts with the imperials wanting to execute you because they randomly caught you somewhere, and the stormcloaks are pretty xenophobic assholes. So, unless you are so loyal to the empire that you don't mind them trying to kill you, or you are a xenophobic nord asshole yourself, there is really no motivation to actively seek out either side and fight for them.

There are not as many ways to land on storm cloak over imperial if you are approaching it from a roleplaying perspective, that is for sure. Thalmor agent provocateur type (must be altmer or maybe bosmer, maaaaaybe khajit) Nord tea party type (must be nord) Someone who just hates the imperial army for the mix up at the beginning Go with some kind of personal relationship/friendship angle based on having initially busted out of Helgen with Ralof and never having looked more broadly at the politics, which in many permutations is just a rewording of #3 Edit: Anyone with any interest in the political structure of Tamriel has an interest, specifically on the issue if wanting elf nazis vs. keeping something along the lines of the empires that have existed for the last millenia and a half or so. It isn't just a domestic issue for Nords. The empire is too screwed if they lose Skyrim, it is one of their two remaining prosperous provinces. Only the beast races might have less self interest in the question, and even they are killing their odds of better future prospects if the admer-idolizing social darwinism side wins. Under most systems they are people like anyone else, just they tend to be looked down upon by some people for the typical petty racist bullshit type reasons. Even the Dunmer no longer have slavery now with the one region that was still maintaining the practice having been super volcano-ed. Under Thalmor rule they are closer to plants and non-sapient beasts than the other races. GL with that. And of course every proper Dovahkiin wants to be the -atriarch of a new dragonborn imperial dynasty which for numerous reasons, cynical and idealistic, means siding with the empire.
