Wow! So much nostalgia! Here are some that I haven't seen mentioned yet:
Redline I loved this game! I think it's really underrated. You drove around in different cars with mounted guns mauling everything and you could get out and shoot stuff FPS style (and this was way before GTA 3). Awesome single player story and had multiplayer too. Good graphics for 99' as well. I was really blown away by this game.
Deus Ex Simply one of the best games of all time. Any true gamer should play this at least once in their life.
Delta Force 2 My first real online game along with Starcraft. Played this game competitively. I've literally spent thousands of hours playing this. Childhood defining indeed
Few more games:
Crusader: No Remorse Fun little game I remember.

Interstate 76 Sick Game, sick soundtrack.

Swat Another fun game

Hugely underrated games that kept me occupied for years
Starsiege Tribes
![[image loading]](http://www.planettribes.com/presto/scripts/cmdhud1.jpg)
Tribes 2
![[image loading]](http://www.tipsfor.us/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/tribes2-screenshot.jpg)
I think these 2 were the first games that really succeeded as a FPS with jetbacks. The skill cap was so much higher than standard FPS games because you cant just point at a guy and shoot him. You had to lead your shots and predict where they were going to land clean hits. The amount of teamwork in these games was also a huge plus. Setting up defenses, sensor, outposts and whatnot provided for a broader range of tactics. I loved the Tribes series and wished it didnt get fucked over by those idiots who made Tribes Vengeance.

Well, childhood was defined by LADDER:
A completely diabolical game I played on my dad's Kaypro II.
As a teenager, I played these:
Doom Warcraft 1 Gemstone III
We used to play Doom and warcraft 1 on two computers hooked together via null serial cable before the advent of ethernet. It was amazing.
Gemstone is a MUD which is still played today (now Gemstone IV). I have probably spent more time on that game overall than any other dozen games I have ever played, put together. Several thousand hours, easily.

wow awsome thread...I miss the good old AoE so much, the last parts were all pretty much disappointing
also: CAVELAND - the first strategy game I ever played, released in 1995 if I remember correctly

![[image loading]](http://img815.imageshack.us/img815/5052/swat3.jpg) SWAT 3 I remember playing this game so much as a kid after I got it as a birthday gift from my brother. I was so long stuck on that goddamn sewer level. Oh my god it still gives me nightmares. It's a shame that SWAT 4 wasn't nowhere near as good as 3.
![[image loading]](http://img832.imageshack.us/img832/2630/themehospital3.jpg) Theme Hospital Oh man. This took many hours of my life. As a kid I remember laughing at the patients all the time (because of the odd diseases and syndromes they had (like invisibility)),

Hmm I played way too many computer games as a kid for any of them to be "defining" I think... but the absolutely most memorable were these:
For the C64 (128D) which was the first gaming console/computer our family got
Summer games + Show Spoiler + Barbarian + Show Spoiler + GhostBusters + Show Spoiler + Forbidden forest (first game to scare me... I was like 5 at the time so...) + Show Spoiler + Marble Madness
Then came the SNES
Super Mario World Super R-Type Mario Go-Kart Street Fighter II
Then the PC years
Diablo Dune2 Duke Nuken 3D Liero

Unreal 1 has to be it. The game was so difficult and i spent all of the time trying to pass it or play against bots
Unreal tournament is a game i got in early 2000 and never left playing it. Got me also into competitive gaming, which lead me to WCG -> SC:BW
I remember playing amiga games like Sensible World of Soccer and a game called "little apple nicklebaum" when i was like 5. But the Unreal series where the thing for me, from the map editor to the multiplayer gaming experience

double dragon and ninja turtle for the nintendo was bullshit. My older cousin would play co-op with me together... until he dies before I do and then he just turns on Friendly Fire and TKs the fuck out of me

This is definitely a big one for me. I was transfixed ever since I saw a friend play it when he got like a 486 in 1992 or something.
Mine(Not going to include starcraft but it goes without saying ive probably spent more time playing it than anything else)
- Super Mario Brothers. Classic, first game I ever owned/played.
- Megaman 2. I played this obsessively, even though its a simple game the game as a whole is just enjoyable to play.
- Street Fighter 2. I'll never forget going to the 7-11 near my house and seeing it, I was like 9 years old. I would go regularly when Championship Edition came out, even skipping school to play.
- Street Fighter 4. The revival of fighting games, I never stopped playing them at any point really but for once I was there at the beginning of a SF games release for tournaments and able to go to the arcade constantly.
Thats about it I guess, looking back at all the time I spent on single player games in my teens(PSX/Saturn era), I don't really think of anything so fondly that I would want to still play it today. : ]

Some of the titles that I played as a kid which got me loving video/computer games:
Dune II Jazz Jackrabbit Halloween Harry Duke Nukem 1, 2, and 3D Hugo's House of Horrors (and other titles) Dare to Dream CnC and Red Alert The Incredible Machine / Sid and Al's Incredible Toons Plethora of NES games
Below are probably my most defining games:

Tribes 1 is probably my most defining game. I played that game for the entirety of my high school life and on and off for years afterwards. This game was probably my first taste of online play. 7+ years of absolute joy and tears.
![[image loading]](http://imgur.com/e6rZk.jpg)
I dont think Tribes: Vengeance deserves the hate that many gamers seem to send in its direction. The game is very good for its own merits. The skill required to play it at the top level was incredible and the feel was still Tribes-ey. Yes, it isn't "Tribes" but it's still a solid game that uses the same skill set. The best clan wars I've ever had was from T:V.
WarCraft 3 was my first taste at WCG quals level competition. I had no idea that you could play computer games and actually earn money/prizes/respect. I have this to thank for my love of competitive gaming today.

first game I ever played, the labs at UF were the only place for hundreds of miles with computers fast enough to run a game with "graphics" lol:
later, my friends had this game and I would play it at their house (since they had an apple II)
![[image loading]](http://allvishal.com/images/2008/pop1-01.jpg) at school I was one of the lucky few in the gifted program and we had computers! some of the younger members may not understand how amazing it was to have a computer in rural northern florida in the very early 90s but man we were hot shit:
![[image loading]](http://www.elephantjournal.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/oregon-trail.jpg) at this point I could chose many, many games that Im sure have already been posted like pokemon red, goldeneye 64, etc but here is something a little different:
![[image loading]](http://www.arcade-history.com/images/game/2861_1.png) skipping ahead many years, two games came out at about the time I graduate from high school that to me that were the pinnacle:
![[image loading]](http://www.gossipgamers.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/06/metal-gear-solid-3-snake-eater.jpg) but to me this is the greatest game of all time. the only time in my entire life that I have seen something and known, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that I would witness greatness, was reading an internet article about a then little hyped japanese game titled wanda and the colossus. Seeing the concept art and the first few screenshots, I was sold.
![[image loading]](http://ps2media.gamespy.com/ps2/image/article/550/550915/wanda-and-colossus-20040924012040811.jpg)
in fact, it is VERY interesting to me that a game that was kind of knocked back in the day for framerate issues and not being the cup of tea is now all the rage for top 10 lists. Now granted, I do think it is the best game of all time, but I remember being VERY angry at a certain techtv show that, along with others, was less than appreciative at the time. I guess hindsight is 20/20.
I think that objectively speaking, the number of great games coming out has diminished greatly. I think this has something to do with the fact that we see fewer, more expensive games that tend to be designed by committee to maximize sales.

Why the heck is noone hiding the pictures?? Its making a really nice thread VERY difficult to navigate! Yeah and me.. 1) Heroes of Might and Magic 2 - If anyone has played this then there shud be NO DOUBT 2) One Must Fall - THE MOST EPIC 1v1 FIGHTER EVAAAA... 3) C&C - Red Alert - my love-at-first-sight exposure to RTS gaming 4) Kings Quest VI - The BEST RPG I have played to date. No doubt... 5) Unreal Tournament - ahh the good old days of gibs flying around in low-grav Morpheus...
