Just got back from my prerelease. Went with a friend for 2HG and he opened up Kozilek as his promo and then opens up a Crush of Tentacles.

I, on the other hand, end up with Captain's Claws.as my promo and then open up a second Captain's Claws in my first pack. Needless to say I was kinda bummed out. We didn't do that well overall though. Barring the fact that half of my rares were unplayable, we probably could've made a better combination with our pool. Colourless decks are fun though.

Could have been worse.
My friend opened up a full play set of Oath of Gideon.

This may be the first set in 5 years I don't go to a prerelease for because I give that little of a fuck about it.

Eh, it was fun. Especially seeing the look in people's faces when I cast Ulamog.

That's control in general right now and how wizards want the decks to be.

The idea works in Standard where they can tune the power level of the card pool so that nobody's doing any super unfair things. Then the "control" decks just need to be slightly grindier midrange decks that have better top end than the midrange-ier midrange decks. I think that's fine for Standard and it works there.

I don't see why WotC felt this would work for a nonrotating format. The card pool is too large. Without strong answers, you just have a lot of unfair decks doing unfair things, and you end up playing a lot of non-games of Magic when you don't have enough interaction points to stop their game. Unlike Standard, where you can exercise a lot of control over the card pool since it's so small and rotates quickly, you just simply can't exercise that level of control over what people are doing in Modern. You'd have to ban literally hundreds of cards to get Modern to play like that.

Like you said, they have the crutch of a ban list.

I got home from my pre-release and even managed to buy a left-over pre-release kit. I ended up loosing all of my games, and more half of them was due to being mana-flooded.

Got some decent cards though. I had Fall of the Titans and Oath of Nissa as pre-release promos; a Hissing Quagmire and foiled versions of Corrupted Crossroads and Quarantine Field

I managed to (in theory) make back almost double the money I paid for my prereleases except
a) obviously nobody pays SCG prices
b) I'm too much of a klepto to try and sell/trae anything I'm not likely to use even to build a deck I might want.

I don't think klepto is the term you were looking for (kleptomaniacs are compulsive thieves not hoarders) but grats on your opens.

Valid point.
I really should just unload a few of the things I'm unlikely to ever play because it's not like the deck I want to build is particularly expensive (some sort of Standard goblins) but the mentality of 'what if such-and-such rises in value? I'll kick myself!' holds me back.

All this despite me opening a full playset of Pildrivers during Origins prerelease and not selling them when they were at $15.

Don't feel bad; I never sell or trade cards away.

Someone actually asked me to trade away my Ulamog when he saw it yesterday. I think I have more than four at this point, but nope.

I used to have that mentality until I went to a vendor to price some things out and realized I could get $300 for "cool" cards that sat in my binder for years and another $200 for bulk rares. Other than lands and my actual decks, I just sell & trade everything.

Went to the prerelease near me yesterday, having only played in person once before at a draft earlier that week where I got rolled. Didn't get any great cards but I had what I think was a pretty solid uw flier deck with a couple ramp cards and big eldrazi (that I never drew haha). Everyone was very helpful and patient with me reading all the cards and taking a little extra time to play. I ended up going 4-1 before I had to leave to take care of my dog, thought it was only going to be around 5 hours tops but it was almost 8 by the time I left. I'm pretty sure the first guy I played what his pants or something though, it smelled awful until he got up and left rofl.

Hey guys, I just recently have been trying to get into playing Magic. I was watching Day9's series Spellslingers which made the game look super fun and interesting. The problem is I don't have any friends that play ( I tried to get my gf into it but she wasn't into it). I started out getting the F2P quickstart decks at my local game store and a Commander deck that someone told me to buy. So I have all these cards and no one to play with. Whenever I go to the game store everyone is already playing with their friends with all these fancy cards. Does anyone have any advice on finding other people to play with who will tolerate a beginner player?

One thing you can do is go to Friday night magic (offered at most/all local game stores) and play limited (you don't need to bring any cards for limited, but bringing basic lands is helpful). That way, you don't need to have other people to play with since the store handles pairings (although you sometimes meet people to play with that way). The event is technically competitive but much more casual than serious magic tournaments.

You can also play magic online (mtg online), but it's just as expensive as playing in real life but the cards you have are digital. However, I find playing online is a good way to learn the intricacies of the rules, and you often learn a lot by seeing other players hit you with properly executed turns.

Other than that, reach out to people you know to see who else would be interested (gf was a start :p).

You can play 'phantom' matches which are cheaper but you don't get to collect digital cards... you just win phantom points if you do well in events which help you pay for entrance into more events. On the other hand, when I played online I preferred to get the digital cards. Back when I was playing they let you (for a fee) redeem a completed set of digital cards for physical cards that they would mail to you (I haven't done it recently).

Be warned: mtgo can be very addictive and a huge money sink if you aren't careful!

Honestly if you're new to the game, Magic Duels is probably the better starting point.

MTGO is not a very good place to learn the game from scratch. I personally also wouldn't buy into MTGO without having a very clear idea of what I'm getting. It's much more well suited for an experienced player looking to get more chances to play Magic than it is for a new player just starting out.

Went to a prerelease yesterday. Best rare I opened was a matter reshaper, so I had no real bombs. However, I did open a ton of removal, bears, and fliers.

I cobbled together a black/white removal-and-bears deck with a colourless splash, and ended up going 4-0 with it. MVPs: kozilek's pathfinder (opened two, used that as finishers), which got me out of tons of stalled out boards. Also, the combo of relief captain/expedition raptor and steppe glider is a fucking house. That also won me a few games.

Card that turned out to be shitty: searing light. I had two, and almost never used them; they were mostly dead cards 90% of the time. Thought they'd be good tempo plays early, but turns out they just suck. people would just eat the damage if they were on the defence rather than try for a trade if I had mana open, and then by mid-game the card was useless. I swapped them out for the 1/4 vigilance dude (who was better, but still pretty crappy) and spatial contortion, which was much much better. I only had four colourless sources, so I was initially worried about being able to cast spatial contortion when I needed it but games always went pretty long so that never happened, I was always able to get a colourless source in time. It actually won me my 4-0 match when I topdecked it. Was a good card, would recommend.
I await the reminiscent nerd chills I will get when I hear a Korean broadcaster yell "WEEAAAAVVVVVUUUHHH" while watching Dota

So, after participating in every prerelease since Journey into Nyx, except for M15, I finally managed to get a W/L ration in sealed above 0.5. I went 5-1, coming in at 3rd, losing only to the eventual winner after missing several triggers on my Tajuru Beastmaster. My rares were spread out on all the colors, and I ended up playing a G/B deck with only a single rare in Vile Redeemer. I had a good number of extremely solid commons and uncommons though, in particular 2x Seed Guardian, 2x Oblivion Strike, an Essence Depleter, a Hedron Archive and a Baloth Null.

Additionally, me and a friend went 5-0-1 in 2HG, coming in at second due to tiebreakers. Me playing B/R devoid and my friend U/W goodstuff. Fall of the Titans with your partner triggering Surge while holding up countermagic is just absurd in 2HG. The only reason we got a draw, was that our opponents managed to discard my Fall with a Mindmelter activation.

What makes colorless decks fun?
