I agree. I like all the aspects of the game, the mining, the crafting, the exploring, the building of cool shit, but I do think you could easily make all those be motivated by the incresing threat of monsters past the early stages.
How cool would it be to have all the mining and shit you do be something you would have to do to survive the next night? Getting more efficient with your methods and getting the higher quality equipment would be vital. Maybe later into the game the monsters start to dig toward you (yeah okay this might get a little laggy), maybe even during daytime, and having a fortified area you can control would beneficial, so building that bigass deathfortress on top of that mountain becomes a good idea. Now imagine fending off waves of zombies in the night with pressure plate triggered, automatic gun turrets and keeping close to your personal escape miningcart in case things get a little too hairy... yeah I'm going a little overboard with this rambling, but I guess minecraft is supposed to tickle your creativity, right ?
Anyway, more monsters over time.

Eh. The game, again is still in beta so we have time to give it room to grow. Though, I think at this point Notch is just throwing out what comes to mind. I don't really see anything wrong with that, but I think MineCraft will develop creatively before it being turned into a survival game. Especially since SMP is out, there are a bunch of new problems put on top of his giant stack of to-dos.
for now I think, you'd have to make your own little challenges by not making a fort.
As for ideas for him to put in, I'd love to see a night time apocalypse eventually when the time passes for him to update for say all of us TLer's on our own server to bust out some arrows on them or something of the sort. Flying creatures anyone?

i just bought this game 3-4 days ago and when i went to my mining shaft, while i was digging i reached the unmineable stone and saw this blue thingy that isn't water. anyone know what this is?

Is it diamond? Do you have an iron pick? You can't mine diamonds afaik without one.

Conversely I want the exact opposite, at least for some worlds, I begin to setup my nice home, get my barings then boom

Keep getting killed by these fuckers during the day recently, no where near shade. But my problem comes from the fact 'easy' actually means more of the feckers. They don't hurt as much mind, but still. So my nice little 'ome gets a hole and I invariably loss the cool stuff, moving to an island world atm.
Sometimes I just want to build a tower of the gods, or take a stroll through the forests and waterfalls, adventuring can wait another day.
But just to clarify we ain't beta yet, let alone a 'Google' beta, hell moving to 'Alpha' was a step up ! (indev etc)

so i just got this game man, i haven't quite seen a world like mine in any youtube videos. it's snowing, which is nice but not rare, but here's the kicker: there's like flying/hovering ground n shit, with waterfalls. it's really quite something. here's a coupla screenprints: + Show Spoiler +
you can *sort of* see the waterfall in the first pic (it's where i'll make my home. XD)

This game is absolutely amazing... It's so easy to get lost in it.
I literally just spent 3 hours exploring a random natural cave that I still haven't completely explored. =)

this game is just so awesome, bought it couple of weeks ago, just so much fun exploring and building stuff, just finished a minecart track between my first base and new base, starting from a high tower, going cross couple of mountains and long way mid air (died couple of times cause of falling down while building it) its so much fun.. took bit time but with 2 minecart boosters i managed to make it so i can go back and forth using same tracks
would reccomend this to everyone, totally worth the 9,95euro's it costs atm

Very fun game ^^. I love building my big city of houses in the sky....very far away and safe from the baddies O.O

I've begun work on my redstone adding machine...shit is gonna be epic.

I just bought this game and started playing but I can't hack trees down with my hand. The only things I can acquire are wool, flowers, feathers and random twigs. I don't know if there is just reduced functionality so close to the beta move or if something is seriously wrong. Anyone know what's up? am I just a noob and should be pressing ctrl or something?

Sadface, I finally broke down and bought this game and it's not running Tried everything I could from the minecraft support forum but nothing helped it. I only wonder if it'll be less buggy in beta and so I should hold onto it.

I had a lot of problems running Minecraft on my stationary, but I got it to work on my laptop. I had to reinstall java and the java 3d platform to make it work.
Also, my stationary's vista while my lappy is 7, which OS are you running?
