Can anyone help me undestand this...
I used to own Half-Life back in the pre-steam days and play CS for free (it was a mod back then). Then valve introduced steam, and I put my half-life key into steam and was still able to play HL, CS, DoD, etc. on steam for free.
Fast-forward a couple years and the only thing I have installed these days on my new computer is all the Half-life 2 stuff.
I am trying to find out how to get original CS 1.6 back on steam, but steam seems to want $9.99 for me to add it?
I have half-life installed, so how come I cannot get CS 1.6 for free still... everywhere I look online are non-steam copies, or CS:Source.
I am a little lost.

Valve decided to make a profit off of it and i believe you are only able to play it if you buy counter strike. It's impossible to play it because even if you have it installed steam won't let you launch it. So you have to buy it. Or play it illegally.

CS is now run as a separate game and not a mod so they want you to pay for it.

I'll just buy a copy off ebay and activate it. Save $5 yay...

Well, I got CS and DoD like that back in the day, and I'm still able to play them. Never paid anything for them, either. I did buy the Half Life 2: Silver thing they had when DoD:S came out, and it technically came with the old HL1 games too, so maybe thats why I can still play them for "free"?

HL should still give you CS afaik, but I have HL2 installed on my acct too, which came w/HL/CS/etc, so I dunno

Pre-Loaded Complete, which means it's installed, but needs to be validated from Steam so you can be allowed to play from steam.

And, to the OP i think you should buy it if you can afford it. If you want to play on steam, that's the only way i think.
Alternative, there's non-steam counterstrike, and it's free. You should give it a try :D
