Don't we want Kpop to become mainstream? I thought there was a reason why we keep trying to spread the love
It seems like it would be cool if it were mainstream but once it happens it would probably suck. I would rather have there be a few knowledgeable, passionate fans rather than idiots that only know a bit SNSD/care about the visuals or say things like this, "Gee gee gee gee baby baby! ...unless you'd rather listen to OPPA GANGNAM STYLUH!" Direct quote from Reddit... I was really in to playing Call of Duty 4 back in the day, the only people that played at my school were gamers really, everybody was really into the game. Then years later Modern Warfare 2 came out and everybody bought the game, everywhere I went I heard randoms saying the stupidest thing you could imagine about the game. You think it would be cool if more people would like the things you like, but once it actually happens, it feels bad man, cause they usually aren't into as much or know as much about it as you. Just my opinion, I'm sure I sound like a jerk/gamer elitist or pretentious but whatever.

That is a bit elitist. There's always going to be gateway stuff to any type of media, whether it's Naruto/Bleach for manga and anime, or Halo for FPS games, or Gangnam Style for Kpop. None of them are really bad, per se, but you'll get annoyed that they're all that people are talking about. I love Halo, but it pisses me off when everyone and their brother thinks they're a hardcore gamer for beating Reach on Legendary. Same thing here, you just have to realize that you're just geting a bit irrationally mad.

Post pics/vids! Would love to see how that concert compared to the one in NJ.
Other than her You & I performance, I do remember Bom being really lackluster at NJ
so hot in person? Alot of people refuse to believe me, but it is true
I used to like Dara the most and thought she was the hottest in 2ne1, I stil like her but rather categorize her as a cutiepie while CL is really hot. But whenever someoe would claim that people will will post duckface pics of her which makes it admittedably pointless to keep on argueing xD. Nobody rocks those Leather skintight pants like her though.

When things become popular and starts to attract a lot of fans, generally they start to cater to the average of the fan base, which means catering to the views of a large number of people who didn't find the original attractive enough to become fans. This should be obvious, if what kpop generally is isn't popular, then it has to change in order to become/stay popular. This means that when things become mainstream, they undergo a fundamental change in what defines them.
The hipster effect is mostly people who liked the original but hate the new changes. Its not elitist at all. Its very easy to see that when things become popular you start catering to the baseline, it tends to trend towards the bottom.

Id say Dara is the prettiest and probably just plain out seems like she has one of the most awesome personality out of all of the other girls in kpop. minzy is the sexiest (but looks likr she has down syndrome when she smiles) and im sure she rocks the leather pants moreso than CL (see: Cant Nobody) CL is just hot if you block out her mexican-english accent and cross-eyes. I really like bom but she is just getting old and all that plastic surgery and botox isnt hiding it.

The only reason I wouldn't want kpop to become popular here is because, as the largest music market, everyone would do what they're doing in Japan- rereleasing all their crap in english and doing that shit here, which would make it not kpop.
Thank goodness that neither Gangnam Style nor Gee are anywhere near popular enough to create that kind of mainstream success, so all you guys arguing about it are being stupid.

Thus making it a matter of perspective. If Kpop becoming mainstream means it's no longer Kpop... then do we end up with Kpop being mainstream or not?
Need someone with a philosophy major to clear this up.

i feel free to ignore that^^, the dara in my heart will always be the the clumsy and shy one from 2ne1 tv who is super charming but can pull off abit of sexiness as well as seen in " I need a girl"
It takes alot of stamina to promote in the US from Korea, I think one of the contributing reasons why more idol groups havnt tried at least tried entering the english market like how common it is for groups to just randomly make a japanese ver of a song is due to the logistcal nightmare of that dreaded 13 hour flight.
And kpop will always be kpop, even if its in English. It is Koreans doing pop music, not pop music that sounds Korean.

You can say that but listen to some of KARA's Japanese releases (not the translations of their old songs) and that shit sounds jpoppy as fuck. Groups will by nature cater to their audience, meaning they'd release western sounding music.
All of this is moot to the Gangnam Style discussion anyway, since as I said there's no way in hell that it's going to cause the entire genre to get mainstream popularity.
