I feel like the whole Weaboo thing has gone on for so long though you're less likely to get really obsessive people, and more people who have enough of an interest in Japanese culture to learn the language without being insane. You've evidently never been to an anime convention. There are so many fucking scary spastic fanatics. The only difference is it's gone on for so long that everyone's used to them

They are not the average anime fan anymore and probably not going to be the majority of people in a Japanese language class.

Worst I saw was this sweaty old fat white dude that was talking about his massive perfect grade gundam model set and was ordering another model from one of the stalls (only reason to go to anime conventions) and when asked for his name he gave some obviously stereotypical Japanese name and was asked if he was half. His response was to ashamedly admit that he had his name legally changed. And I don't want to imagine that that's what it'll be like if I eventually take a korean history elective at uni instead of doing more design classes >< Fkn Creepers...

Surprisingly, my first year Japanese class wasn't just bunch of weaboos. A lot of them were taking Japanese because it's required by the faculty to take at least one language course, and a lot of them thought that Japanese would be more interesting than French, or Spanish. However, my first year high school Japanese class was just that: a bunch of weaboos.

That's another thing I didn't mention. here you're required to take 2 years of a foreign language (unless you already speak a language/test out of it ofc), so you're likely to have people take more popular languages-Spanish, French, Chinese, Japanese- because they have to so why not? But fewer people are going to do the same for Korean- most people taking the class are there because they actually want to take the language, or have to fulfill the language requirement and figure they already have an interest in Korean so why not?

My first semester of Japanese were all weaboos except for me and this 31 year old dude with extremely long hair and an extremely long beard, he was super chill though. Actually now that I think about it there was a Koreaboo in that class too, though she could actually atleast speak Mandarin quite well despite being caucasion.

Seeing one IRL was...unsettling. edit- also that class has confirmed to me that kpop is a primary reason all the non-Koreans want to learn the language. I mean, it's kind of a reason for me too but I also have Korean friends and shit so it's not the primary reason...seeing someone who's only connection to the class is a desire to speak to Super Junior was weird. Yo I'm non-Korean and I'm learning Korean so I can listen to Korean GSL and become a translator at will on this site. Is that weird? HELL NO.

I didn't say all people learning Korean was weird; I'm learning it myself. The weird was seeing rabid fangirls and koreaboos in real life. And GSL =/= kpop, not that I really care. It's not the fact that you like shit that's Korean and want to understand it, it was the way the people in my class acted and conducted themselves. No need to get all offended.

Anyway yeah, I know a bunch of Koreans and some of them don't like kpop at all much in the same way almost none of use like American top 40s. They're all into different shit, alot of indie music, stuff like that. On an unrelated note my Korean class has extra "culture" classes 3x a week, and we have to attend 5 a semester. I signed up for a random five and today ended up being about Hallyu, which just translates to "here are a bunch of actors/singers/idols/movies that have gained international attention". That's not the interesting part (not that any of this is) though. The thing is that there were a couple girls, not in my regular language class, that were basically a living rendition of an Allkpop commentator, only somewhat more dangerous since they were armed with more vocab than "saranghae oppa" (lol that comic). Like, OMG B2ST I LOVE THEM etc etc., and after class used Unnie and shit while speaking in English. It was unsettling and weird. Kind of like the kpop version of seeing someone embody 4chan, but in person. How are you going with learning korean? Did you try learning it by yourself first? I'm quite interested because a) i do want to learn some more asian languages b) kpop is awesome c) i would really like to work in korea in the future and d) i tutor a whole heap of koreans, some who can't really speak english and it might be fun trying to teach in korean. Classes is out of the question though because id get smacked down for not having amazing mandarin skillz be4 learning korean lol
