I agree with Unleashing that the philosophy of '95 was pretty basic but for it's running time I feel like it managed to make every second count. The short length of the movie was my main gripe with it, it made + Show Spoiler [ GitS '95] +the whole movie feel so unsatisfying because it felt like a good portion of the movie was cut out between the puppet master's escape and the battle with the tank. The transition between those two scenes was practically nonexistant. Innocence didn't have this problem since it was 20 minutes longer which is why I ended up liking it more despite the poor CGi at times.
+ Show Spoiler [ SAC 1st gig] +Sac's problem was the exact opposite because it had a long streak of SA episodes which weren't nearly as interesting as the laughing man case and killed the pacing. Wasn't a fan of Batou's characterisation compared to the movies either, he was always either happy-go-lucky or pissed off with little inbetween. The ending was also very anticlimatic considering all the buildup but the laughing man case was still great and so were most of the SA episodes.
Between '95, Innocence and SAC 1st gig I ended up liking Innocence the most by a very small margin, Sac & '95 were about equally good imo. Just need to watch 2nd gig and SSS now.

I liked 2nd Gig more then the 1st season as a whole.
Most people seem to not like the Innocence movies so I haven't watched em yet.

Innocence is just 1 movie, you're thinking of the Arise movies.
|
I liked Innocence but Arise was awful.

It was a good movie but i ultimately ended it disappointed that there wasn't more to it.
This is why i prefer going into stuff knowing as little as possible. Did you never watch it before or did you watch the newer version (the cgi abomination)? Did you watch the series? I personally thought the 95 movie was pretty good and there certainly was lots of eye-candy but the writing was a bit messy. However, the SAC seasons elevated the franchise onto a whole new level for me. I never watched anything from the franchise before. I thought it was a good movie but everyone i ever heard talking about it kept praising it to high heavens especially for the 'philosophy' but i don't know, most of it was pretty basic as far as philosophy goes and for someone working with biology, a field that attempts to define what life is, it just didn't really give me anything to think about that i hadn't thought about before. If i went into it knowing nothing i think i would've enjoyed it more, it was still entertaining but ultimately i feel like the hype ruined it a bit for me. I began watching SAC and despite only being 2 episodes in i am honestly already enjoying it more than i did the movie despite it only having been through incredibly episodic episodes. The movie was obviously everything good about 90s anime visually though.
Reading this, you will probably enjoy SAC more than the movie. It will be episodic for the most part though, so keep that in mind. They are vital because of the world-building and exploration of certain topics though, which to me is at least equally important to SAC as the story. The story will ramp up later. I can understand why the hype killed it for you. I personally don't have as much of a problem with that because I usually go with a wary attitude into a new series/movie. The more hype it gathered, the more wary I am. I still get disappointed at times.

I don't think the extra 20 minutes added a lot. For example, they spent like 10 minutes flying through some surreal cgi shit, which bored me to death. I don't think it enhanced the story-telling at all. If anything, Innocence was more of a mess than the original movie imho.
+ Show Spoiler [SAC] +I agree on the pacing - kind of. When I first watched SAC1 I thought the only thing that they could really have improved was to intertwine SA and Complex episodes better. SAC2 did a better job at this but it was still a far stretch from being perfect. It's pretty much the only reason I wouldn't give it a 10/10 because it made me feel there is still a lot of room for improvements. I wouldn't say it "ruined" the pacing though. It felt rather natural how they were working on and off on the case (it was explained why) and the final 6 episodes or so were hype as fuck. I guess on a rewatch you could watch the Complex episodes all in a row for a complete story experience. I disagree on Batou. I think he was well characterised. The "in between" is much more subtle though. I also really liked the ending! :D A friend of mine was also disappointed but I thought it made much more sense that he didn't join Section 9.

I never liked the original GitS movie that much. It's been a long time since I've seen it, but it featured a pretty basic cyberpunk human/cyborg dilemma but Oshii continuously tried to beat into the viewer when it really wasn't all that impressively set up to begin with. I guess it stands out because it looks nice and the atmosphere is inviting, but apart from that it really doesn't size up to better sci-fi anime titles that have much more body to the story and ideas.
Some of his other films like Angel's Egg are better but still features Oshii devoting long winded monologues to telling you what the movie is about. At the very least I think Angel's Egg is a lot more compelling though and the mystery mixed with the visual imagery was a bit more captivating.

Oops yea I was thinking of Arise. That is the only animated thing from GitS that I haven't seen heh. I will eventually but not looking forward to it since Arise is so poorly received.

I liked the CGI parade , the unusual visuals along with the soundtrack gave the scene this ethereal feeling wich I loved. Innocence was going to have scenery porn no matter the length of the movie anyway, Oshii likes his backgrounds.
+ Show Spoiler [ Sac 1st gig] +Killed might be a strong word I admit but after seeing how well the SA and C episodes were mixed up in the first half I was dissapointed when they just abandoned that idea in the second half. Having 6 C episodes back to back was hype sure but I feel like the show lost some of it's magic by using the more "conventional" approach. The ending had a lot of merit too, for example I like how the events of some SA episodes were brought up in the final episode, but with so much happening off-screen it felt so rushed and unsatisfying imo. And yeah I agree about TLM not joining section 9, having that good a hacker in thier squad would just trivialise all their future cases and TLM never seemed like the police type anyway.

Tsugumomo first ep is better than I expected. The question is how the the anime goes
edit: lol it's 12ep, oh well

I watched the first episode of Boruto out of curiosity.
I'm surprised it's actually quite alright (lots of parkour animation) also the blend of the modern world. There's no grand threat or anything(yet) so it's like some sort of modern SoL ninja whatever quite relaxing.

The following sealed the fact that boruto is on a one-way trip to garbage-ville: + Show Spoiler +
Too much edge.

I always think of burritos when I hear the new naruto title~
|
The boruto manga is such a fucking abomination art and character design wise. Behold: + Show Spoiler + Left is drawn by the original author, right is from the boruto manga The exact same characters
And if you're wondering, that's not just cherrypicking the best vs the worst, the boruto example is literally just what it looks like, it's not some especially bad example

oh it wasn't just a continuation by the original author?

No, new author and new artist

Wow, not only did the drawing go to shit... Her tits disappeared!!! This is unacceptable.

why the hell.
also someone being able to do something to the seventh hokage is just absolutely disgusting from a writing point of view. Naruto should literally be god, and some random baddie appears to be stronger.
Kinda reminds me of beyblades. Season 1 they become world champions by beating people which should be impossible to beat, then season 2 first arc comes and a random guy shows up who just utterly rapes them all because plot.

Its not like Naruto is known for good writing, so meh.

I mean aside from the edgy shit from the start all the other aspects are alright,
I think i'll be watching this just with the ninja life parts not the shounen plot it has
