Truly beautiful (visuals + music) movie! The story is short, slow, and simple but I thought it was masterfully presented!
I believe this is my second anime/movie from Makoto Shinkai (5 cm per second). Anything else worth watching (Beside Your Name that isn't available yet)? There's the "voice of a distant star" but i'm not sure how good that is since i've only seen Kimi No Na Wa, 5 cm per sec and Garden of Words from him (which i super liked the first 2 but the 3rd one not so much)

so I just thought I should give Hyouka a chance since I never watched it and considering that the visuals seem like a big part of it that's probably not something that KyoAni screwed up... so when I don't know what subs are good I usually just google a certain name of a site + the name of the anime. I get directed to the 720p version, without looking at the size of it I'm like "meh, not like disc space matters these days. I'll just get the 1080p version, it's BD and all!", I get redirected to 1080p coalgirls version:
Size: 37.4 GB (40,145,747,154) bytes srsly?

It's some sort of mystery(heavy) and romance (the usual anime stye aka "literally nothing figure it out yourself if there's something going on" you know the usualy teasing and hints that literally lead to nowhere)
It's not superb but hyouka's alright i guess.

Why is that? I just watched ep1 and thought it was fairly decent, except for the whole oni-san shit. Why do authors in japan feel the need to do this all the time? Other than that I thought the whole set-up, acting of the characters and atmosphere was well done and consistent. If they don't screw it up from here on I can see this being a decent watch.

I think you missed something. They aren't related. The teacher is just a neighbor / childhood friend to Hana. Hana just calls him onii-chan

I didn't miss that. That was exactly my point. If they aren't related why do they even add a backround story that leds to her calling him onii-chan? The only reason I can see is to cater to the "brother-complex" but "oh hey, it's legal because they aren't related" crowd. It really doesn't add anything to the story at all.

In Asian societies (only speaking on behalf of Chinese and Japanese, idk enough about the others), it's customary to call almost anyone either "older/younger brother/sister, aunt/uncle, grandpa/grandma" depending on their age in relation to you. It would actually be rude (to some) to just call someone (especially older) by just their name, without "sister/brother" word attached.
Example, a family friend of mine, who are Chinese, has a younger sister. Because they grew up in Canada, the younger sister calls the older one by her first name. Their grandma used to say/semi scold her when they were kids, "why are you calling her by her first name, call her (chinese version of) "Older Sister". etc.

The visuals weren't really a big part, aside from the fact that it was done by KyoAni, so the visuals were something that stood out. Not the other way around, in that the visuals were necessary to the story.

I thought hyouka was ok it has some meh arcs and some ok arcs but it never really managed to stand out and be anything amazing and then the ending absolutely sucked, but atleast it looked pretty
it's a 6/10 imo

I can look at pretty pictures and like it just for that. Hence picking Hyouka rather than other things so I think I'll be fine

idk the show or context but it's not thaaat uncommon to call someone onii/onee who isn't related to you? I wouldn't expect it from someone past a certain age (sounds super childish to me, like a kid getting lost, a 20-something year old picks him/her up to find parents etc.) but if it's not a random stranger on the street but instead someone you know that might just stay that way? Nadeko also calls Koyomi onii-chan. But that's also the most clishé character in the entire series who's obviously going for that little sister trope so idk

Soft spoilers:
+ Show Spoiler +He is a friend of the family and she had a crush on him (or at least it looked like it) from when she was little. Later when she is in highschool he is her teacher. I mean, the story for the guy is similar but they somehow ended up with a story for him so that he didn't end up calling his teacher onee-chan. I wonder why.

You are thinking about this too hard. It's just an Asian thing. Hmm if I had to take another example from another series like toad. In Horimiya, the MC's little brother calls the MC's boyfriend onii-chan.
Also, I believe that the episode stated that Mugi only had the music teacher as his tutor during middle school while Hana knew her sensei way before that. It's not weird for a little girl to call some older friend that is a boy onii-chan. If you're wondering why they didn't come up with identical backgrounds for the two, well it's obviously because they are different characters.
|
Yeah, maybe it's just an asian thing that is annoying to me because I feel like it's used for a certain purpose.
About your second paragraph: My point was rather that the backround stories could have been reversed. But of course they aren't for reasons. They also could have wrote two different stories without involving onii-chan/onee-chan-calling in either of them.
//Anyways, this is being bloated way to big. I genuinely enjoyed ep1 and my statement was that this was the only thing that annoyed me.
|
yeah the Horimiya example Ice mentioned is a good one. Couldn't really think of something. That being said it is entirely possible that it's suposed to be the brocon thing since I haven't seen it yet. But the fact that he doesn't say it isn't too surprising. Like I said, to me it sounds just childish, more than anything else.
for that edit/sidenote/whatever: I think most people in here enjoy talking about those kind of things even if just for the sake of talking so don't mind it

i don't really care about their backgrounds being reversed but yea, they could have written something different. But I think they really wanted to nail down the childhood friend trope.
Regarding your side note, I don't really mind or anything. I prefer to have something to talk about at least.
i find it funny that Reina from Ufo voices Hana though. I guess she got the "I love my sensei" attitude down.
