so the realization came quite quickly and had nothing to do with it being famous. You can quite accurately point out at what point in time most people thought it's going south. I really did like it a lot at first (first 3 episodes or so) but disliking the 2nd arc has nothing to do with being a hipster. this is a little better i guess...I'm still here wondering..."what was it in those episodes 3 - arc 1 end that made you start disliking it more?" I was expecting them to go through the dungeon and see how they did that. Thus realy liking episode 1 and 2 with the stage 1 bossfight and everything being really cool. And suddenly episode 3 was "a week later, we're on floor 7" or some crap like that and I just facepalmed at that moment because I really wanted to see that. Only got worse when they spend what felt like 10 episodes for Kirito x Asuna at the lake. Sure that's important as well but really felt super rushed to me and priorities being off. I think people mentioned that they went about it in more detail in the anime than the LN (no idea if that's true, didn't read) so the source is apparently even worse in that regard but I didn't know that going into it 
Honestly, I disliked SAO after the second episode. I thought it was really predictable and boring. The main character didn't seem to have much of a personality, and winning the way he did, especially in an MMO setting, was just terribly unrealistic.
I mean, looking for realism in an anime is stupid, sure, but MMOs are games were no one even has the capability of being significantly stronger than others, because the skill cap is relatively low. Log Horizon is a better example where actual skill in MMOs is more about cooperation and timing than individual skill.
And all the crap with the beta testers annoyed me.

From what i read (cause i couldn't read everything cause there's so many long ass texts) I agree about the beta testers crap about SAO ruining it. I was also kinda hyped with SAO like first 3 episodes(until the end of the first boss fight) thought it had potential but after that it kinda disappointed me and then s2 was a trainwreck. Not really cause it's popular why it sucks i don't mind watching popular stuff but rather it just went downhill and continually disappointed me to the point that i lost interest of SAO.

I'm personally annoyed in both directions. I dislike people calling insanely popular stuff masterpieces (like SnK, Death Note, FMAB, NGNL etc.) and go on and on about how awesome they are when they are actually not. On the other hand, I also dislike it when people just keep shitting on shows because it's easy. The amount of people shitting on SAO on MAL recommendation forums are ridiculous. It's sometimes not even remotely close to being the topic, people just jump in, see that the OP liked SAO and start shitting on it. It's tiring. Especially when they are the same people that call other arguable shitty shows awesome.

Right now its about the arms race and developing technology etc in prep for the Gauna. I don't mind the side stuff with the love (just a tease anyway imo).
