Mamoru and maria were killed by the rats after maria had given birth and shun just died alone because he knew he was probably a fiend and as such didn't fit in and would be eliminated if he stuck around + his powers were going out of control iirc meaning stuff around him got all twisted and fucked up

It wasn't outright confirmed because Saki herself never finds out and we see things from her perspective most of the time, she didn't see shun die but when she left him she was sure he would die. She also don't know what the hell actually happened with Maria and Mamoru but she realizes that it really was their bones that were turned in, the show isn't completely in your face about it but i wouldn't call it vague
This was pretty confusing. Most of it kinda made sense in the end but they left a lot of things vague (what exactly happened to Shun, Mamoru and Maria for example). The characters have been really flat and felt scripted at times, especially when they randomly brought in generic conversations like "everything is gonna be alright, right? yeah! I'm so glad". On the other hand it tackled a lot of philosophical themes. "The human as its own greatest enemy", "How far does society go to protect them from themselves (including conditiong, manipulating etc.), "Where is the difference between animals and humans" and other smaller things like the relationship between higher up politicians and basic foot-soldiers (that scene where Saki watched the Giant Hornet colony at war was powerful). Because of this, it's very hard to rate. I think it was great but had some very obvious flaws. Its also better than anything I rated with 8 so far but worse than anything I rated with 9 so far. I'm going to give it a 9 for now but I may revise that later.
Good show, watched it in 2 days and it kept me compelled the entire time. Definitely took priority over NGNL, which I was forced to watch (and probably going to finish next). The characters are ok'ish, not great. I don't get the hate for Shirou. He acts dumb sometimes and his mindset, while being admirable, has its weaknesses and is responsible for some bad outcomes. But in the end, pretty much every character has a weakness, one way or another. The setting is interesting but not very well explained imho, as far as borders go. Action and art/animation was what really made this stick out. Those were truly great. 7/10 in the end, looking forward to the next season.

lol. I'm only at chapter 27 atm. just past the troll chapter where + Show Spoiler +
the only thing that happened was the cyborg landing. "Very interesting." Indeed Saitama, indeed. xD
The series was a weird one for me as well. Some things were strange, inconsistencies with the art (sometimes it's gorgeous other times it looks crude and rushed), several random leaps in time, and some interesting things not explained (as you said with the deaths of their friends). I also find episode 8 rather surprising because I thought Shun and Satoru were both in love with Saki and then they suddenly were dating each other. I agree that the characters were flat for the most part and Saki didn't really exhibit much "strength" throughout the entire series. The series was odd but it was entertaining throughout. Had some great world building and as you said interesting philosophical points. It could have been amazing if the production were a bit better but it was overall a great show still.

Well, I agree for the most part. I know the show wasn't completly in ones face. Things don't always need to be explained and room for thought is appreciated. However, some things rather don't sit so well if not explained and the fate of those three were ones of those things - for me at least. There is a lot of other things that aren't explained but I'm completly fine with it. An example of this would be how Squealer managed to turn over all the colonies etc. because I can imagine a lot of things that he could have done and that was interesting.
And yeah, forgot about the soundtrack. I already mentioned that a few days ago, but the whole soundtrack is amazing.

Personally I was terrified since I thought they basically enslaved Mamoru/Maria and like they did the queen so she was basically nothing more than a babymaking vessel. Almost stopped watching at that point until I read up and got semi confirmation that they just killed her after giving birth. Fucking Maria man, why couldn't she just find love with Saki

Agreeing with all points. Regarding the production, at points I couldn't tell if was just rushed or if it was done deliberately. But in the end that thought doesn't matter because even if it was done on purpose it's still not a good thing imho.
About episode 8 (and later on, too)...that came so sudden and random. I don't know, the whole sex/relationship thing was really weirdly executed. It was like they randomly plugged pairs together. I guess they did in on purpose to show how the society conditioned children/teens, against our society has on love/relationships, supported by the genetic modification to engage in sex when in danger.

Well, it makes sense. The bones that Squealer handed in were probably the real ones and he killed them after they got their child. That's what I assumed at least. Still not confirmed in the series but if its confirmed in the novel then ok.
Episode 8 was basically told to you in episode 3 anyway. I don't know how people keep saying it was random and unexpected. They even tell you that they tend to do homosexual coupling in teenage years. The show is also not about the characters. They are merely there to move the plot around. It's about the world and philosophy surrounding that world.
Almost everything in that show is heavily foreshadowed in prior eps.

The hate for Shirou largely stems from how fucking retarded he is in Fate route. He is more tolerable in UBW and HF.

In his defense, people do really die when they are killed.

I'll never get the hate he gets for that specific sentence, it made perfect sense in the context.

People love memes and well that has become one. I'm guessing most of the people haven't even watched it nor do they even know where it's from. It's also why Steins;gate is the greatest anime ever made. All the memes.

Shiroe is tons better in UBW as it's kind of his arc.
Also the Shiroe hate is a mostly western thing caused heavily by poor TV adaptation and sketchy translation.
I'm sad that some of glorious Hachiman monologue from the LN are not included. also Hachiman pls that's not how you walk together back .. even if you aren't lovers or anything stay close she's still a girl you don't leave a girl behind.
The new animation feels weird Yui is less cute, Yukinon is ok and Hachiman looks normal which is odd for me lol
Who cares about Yui or Yukinon when you have Totsuka ! (Hachiman logic)
oh btw about the character design: I don't think yui looked worse at all. The only thing that bothered me was the chuunibyou guy who suddenly became super skinny.
[17:18:20] <Toad|> best thing about nisekoi ova probably was the ED [17:18:23] <Toad|> that looked amazing
