You shouldn't base whether a film is influenced by something on what a director said. Christopher Nolan said he was inspired a lot by films like Blade Runner when he filmed Interstellar, but that doesn't mean that you see the inspiration there. Also the idea of a virtual reality already appeared before GitS. Take William Gibson's Neuromancer and its sequel novels like Mona Lisa Overdrive, as an example. In fact, reading Neuromancer makes it apparent that the Wachowskis were probably way more inspired by Neuromancer than they were of GitS. Mona Lisa Overdrive I think is an actual track in the second movie, which I think speaks way more to the influence of Gibson's novels @_@ What visuals are you talking about, by the way? | ||

Anyway the whole opening of the first Matrix is a redoing of the opening to the GitS movie. All that green text scrolling is due to GitS doing it. The neck jacks are because GitS did it that way. The fight scene in the lobby is a homage the major's final fight. Some scenes are homages to Ghost in the shell although a lot of the scenes are homages to different Asian martial arts movies as well. Just because an idea has been around before doesn't mean that person used the original idea as inspiration. They saw Ghost in the shell and wanted to take that concept to live action. I'm not sure if you are misunderstanding my opinion or not. I like The Matrix, I think it's really well done and good cyperpunk. That doesn't mean they didn't take inspiration and things from Ghost in the Shell. The two aren't mutually exclusive. I mean when the people that made it, people in the industry, movie critics are all saying one thing and you can watch the two side by side to see comparisons between the two I really don't get your reasoning. | ||
