well its a bit of a stretch but hear me out. There is an overarching plot that ties the stories together, its a collection of stories, but when you make a collection there has to be a basis for it all, since the end is not been reached yet I don't particularly know what it is.

The plot to connect the whole series is still up in airs, but each block of books had its own overarching plot. Just highly subjective to Nishio trolling.

I dropped it a while ago, but there was hardly any correlation between arcs at all in Fairy Tail I thought. One Piece is like how you described, but Fairy Tail wasn't. Most of it was "Go off on a job/adventure, come back, then go off on to another." Granted maybe that all changed after they held hands and believed in friendship, but before that the different arcs were really only related because they happened to involve the same cast.
