If you come in here looking for "anime recommendations" then please refer to this chart before posting: Anime Recommendations (as of may 2014). We also have an IRC channel called #tladt where we all hang out. The channel is on Rizon, not QuakeNet! Feel free to check it out. TLADT discord is Discord.gg

Log of Harem is going strong, it is actually nice to see Shiroe is not the harem king lol. Who would be that black queen in next episode D:

i spoiled myself a little of the story but i dont really know about the details, apparently that samurai girl of the tea party didn't login to the game when Apocalypse happened but somehow she is 'hacking' back into the japanese server. Wonder when will she meet Shiroe.

AFAIK

She is not as much hacking into JP server but trying to travel from Europe to Japan in the new world though which I'm sure involves a lot of hacking with her sword.

You can just read the short story about Kanami if you want. It's incomplete and ends on a cliff hanger though.

Huh, first time I've seen 'nakama' used outside of a One Piece context. Still makes my stomach turn, though.
Why?

Why does 'nakama' make my stomach turn, you mean? Because I believe that translations should actually translate. Proper nouns and names are in a grey area I can tolerate, but 'nakama' isn't some magical term that can't be expressed across languages.

Author said that at some point Kanami and Shiroe stories should get tied together iirc. I am too lazy to get the web versions personally, probably just going to follow along as scans show from things actually published.

what do you make of words that are supposed to make it funny? I usually agree with you and don't like those kind of things in general but I liked "Imouto-powers" from WCW in episode 4 (I think?) a lot more than the properly translated version.

I mean the fact that it's english-jap mix in the orignial probably makes it even more tolerable and whatever FFF ended up translating it as just sucked

Imouto is just little sister, I'm not sure why saying it one way is more funny than another.

Because it was imouto-power in the original, I guess? You can always have sister-chikara for lawlz.

Its really just personal preference of the translators. While reading D-frag they kept in certain Japanese words because it was more "moe" and it fit the situation (I like it when they put those little notes talking about why they translated certain portions the way they did). Honorifics are also something that should be left alone as well. It doesn't bother me though when translators leave words in Japanese for the most part (unless I have to go look them up).

Oh, I see what you guys mean. A phrase that used both english and japanese? Honestly I don't know how I feel about that, although sometimes it can be real funny:

You can like it as much as you want, but its still lazy not-translations. It doesn't really hinder my understanding on whatever I'm watching, since at this point I've picked up enough stuff, but its still ridiculous.

Ooh, like that. I thought you were talking some amount of corniness it brings or something.

I don't really feel the same way; at least not as strongly.
I can imagine a translator deciding to not translate a word to let the viewer associate that word with some situation, creating some extra meaning within the story. This can be quite effective when people aren't really familiar with the original language. This can of course create misunderstanding of the meaning of a word and it can be annoying to people familiar with it, but I can , in some cases, see why one would decide to not translate a certain returning word.

yeah it was imouto-powers in the original as well but like I said even without that, the translation from FFF really made it sound stupid.

I think I saw "ojyousama-atmosphere" or something similar, whatever uiharu says in Railgun episode 1. That made me cringe pretty hard as well.

There is no extra meaning within the story, though. Words mean what they mean. It isn't the translator's job to "improve" the script.

Some things just lose just a bit of their meaning when translated. Take the little sister example that was mentioned. Little sister in itself doesn't mean anything special in English. In the context of Japanese anime though, Imouto has its own little underlying history so keeping it makes more sense.

What? Imouto means little sister. Thats it. The only difference is the language.
