Does anyone have the Mushishi dvds? I'm tempted to buy them from amazon, and am wondering about the sub/dub quality.

Amagami SS ep2 was...better than the first? idk
it's unbelievably slow paced for a show that's supposed to have multiple arcs
Morishima's engrish makes me cringe though

The only anime DVD I've ever bought was Escaflowne (which was amazing), and all of Robotech.

I don't know if it's the translations that are pissing me off or just the main character, but something is extremely annoying.

I'm terrible @ japanese but it seems like they use fairly simple phrases (I'd probably be able to follow along like...50% of the conversations? idk somewhere near that) and the little I understand seems to match the translation (other than "ohayo gozaimasu Morishima-senpai" being translated into "wakey wakey" lol)

fairly bad conversation patterns though
so much repetition
something tells me they use the same sound bits for different situations, lol

House of five leaves, anyone?

I'm enjoying it so far (ep 4, please don't spoil me ). I like the soundtrack, animation and especially how there's no annoying characters (well, ofc there isn't).

I saw different boxes for it and I'm also tempted (might be the only anime DVD I ever buy). Anyway, the japanese dub is superb, if that's what you wanted to know.

I'm just trying to justify this purchase when I know I'm going to like the fansubs more :/

Finished Kurozuka, didn't really like it as much as I thought I would. Watched the first episode of Shiki, I wasn't sure what to expect but I have really high expectations for the rest of the series, as the first episode was excellent.

Ookami-san is getting dropped next episode if it doesn't improve, a lot.

Regarding Shiki,
am I the only one that has read the manga?

Hoping someone who's read more of it than I have (~4 volumes) can come in and actually say it's good.

ugh I'm having huge problems keeping up with all the mangas I'm reading (45 ongoing atm -_-)
does anyone have a system more simple than browsing OM/MSTK/MF and trying to figure out which ones I'm reading? It's so time consuming for no reason T.T

RSS feeds perhaps?

If you toss me raw links I'll read them when I have a chance, Southlight. Oh, I finished vol 2 of DenYuuDen yesterday, you are right, people don't move. It is a pretty common problem with light novels (actually, not just Japanese light novels, but series in Chinese and English as well), imo, especially long series like this that has something in mind. It is clear that the author has a pretty large work in mind from the first few vols, dropping in hints everywhere at a pretty elaborate backstory and taking his time to shape out a fair amount of characters. The problem is that with this length, it is pretty much all you can do to develop one to two characters, YuuDenYuu is juggling 3 primary characters and a host of supporting characters, not even counting antagonist figures. As a result, the plot moves, but the characters jog in place. Oh, we see some development of the characters, but because of the grandiose nature of the work, they are just revelations of past events and hidden facts, the characters still remain in place. It isn't easy to balance the development of plot and characters, then add in elaborate character settings and we are doomed to a few vols where we just learn random reasons why these characters stay in place while watching events churn by us.

The issue above is one of the reasons I like FMP a lot, with the author handling the humor and the serious parts very nicely, leaving the former largely for the short stories and dedicating the long stories to the latter. Honestly, it is an approach that would've worked alright with YuuDenYuu if the slapstick comedy portions wasn't necessary to get any conversation in at all. Character development and fact revealing was also worked out nicely, with the less vital facts tossed at readers via short stories and main plotline keeping a tab on all the important stuff. To be fair, the way the characters work out in YuuDenYuu rather demands for the random manzai-like conversations, even if it can readily backfire with a plot and theme like what the series has. Well, once Felice (or whatever the English was supposed to be, too lazy to find an episode to check) gets over that semi kuudere phase we'll be able to have less of that. Probably ><

Anyhow, I think YuuDenYuu has potential, and luckily I can laugh pretty readily at the parts intended to be funny (probably), think I'll read on and hopefully find some place good enough for you to read on.

On the topic of Shiki, watched episode one, semi interested. Also, Katanagatari be out, never been so tempted to download a .ts even if it is 5gigs.

3 volumes, though, that's a quarter of the series done, and they've not budged. It's way too stereotypical.

+ Show Spoiler [legend of the legendary hero light novel] +

Shion - stereotypical young king in over his head, trying to tread the path of light for his mother, at risk of being poisoned by a darker figure who does his own shit, gee where haven't I heard this story before. Oh, right, it's been paraded around since the old days, most notably frikkin' LogH.

Raina - stereotypical lazy badass, although I'll admit he's prolly the most retardedly lazy protagonist ever. He's interesting.

Felice - a wall. Boring.

Milan - See: Shion rant, LogH (forget his name).

Milk - stereotypical loli eyecandy.

Iris - stereotypical loli eyecandy.

Lucile - stereotypical... thing. There's always some weird Lu Bu type character, and he's it for this series.

It's just really hard to stomach, after trudging through THREE volumes.

It did start in 2002, can cut it a bit of a slack in that sense, or I am just nice. Though personally I doubt there will be much in the ways of 'innovative' stuff till we get to the end or even DaiDenYuuDen given the pace things go at.

I am fine with things being stereotypical for the most part, 王道 is such for a reason. They just need something to show for it. I rather like the possibilities of an intricate world view from DenYuuDen from what I have seen so far, so I'll give it to vol 6 or so to show more promise. Worst case it'll be the best buffer material I have since Song of Ice and Fire and LotR

Literature, particularly with regards to fantasy, has been going on since like the 50s. Saying it's 02 is no excuse, just as i don't excuse VNs for often having poor writing. Sorry if I'm critiquing a "light novel" the way I would a regular novel, but I don't really hide the fact that I love semi-LN-ish books like KnK more than the typical LNs I consider rubbish (ala Ookami-san). I mean, damn, Tsukihime was 2000. So, yeah, don't go there.

Vol 11 (the last vol) was given an S on Jade Room, so maybe it does get better at the end. I don't know if I can stomach the stereotypical cliche all the way to there, though. It's hard enough laboring through the "weaker" first few Bungaku Shoujo volumes.

Maybe I'm spoiled by stuff like Owari no Chronicles and Baccano, where the characters are intriguing from the start, develop, and the story progresses. Wait, sorry, let me rephrase: maybe I'm spoiled by writing that doesn't suck. How about that >_>

Nyeh, I'll just sit here and wait for you, I guess. Three volumes is usually all I'll give a series before I give up on it.

You know I am just nicer than you are with regard to these things~ I don't think it is wrong to judge them like that, though personally I avoid doing that for the most part because I feel that scope is somewhat unjustified.

We'll see if it gets better fast, I doubt you can stomach this kind of stuff all the way till vol 6 How are the first few bungaku shoujo volumes weak, anyway? I am probably highly, highly, highly biased, but I thought the review at Jade Room was seriously underrating the earlier volumes, especially vol 2. I mean, it is expected that an author who knows your expectations will be able to catch you blindsided almost every time, but you have to admit the twist on Wuthering Heights for vol 2 was brilliant. If only it was longer and the characters got more time to develop The S for vol 5 and 7 were totally justified though.

There is a good amount of books you'd consider as 'suck' where as I'd call them on par and read out for giggles, it might explain how hard it is for me to clean through my reading list

ん~ too much dancing around and not enough cutting to the point, I guess? Vol 1 in particular was just *choke* Hmm, if you remember the atogaki in vol 1, where she mentioned how a lot of people who reviewed it commented on the comedy, and she was like "err? but I'm... I'm trying to write something serious? (´・ω・`)" and that's around where I stood. Tooko was so... nyeh, squirmy and such, that the spontaneous seriousness really didn't fit the "mood." Like, uhhh, so why the sudden switch? That sort of reaction was evoked.

Yeah you're definitely nicer :p I'm reeeeeeeeeally picky about what I read.

Let's use Touko or Tohko, drawing a page from T-M. I have yet to meet a single person (that didn't speak Japanese) who can pronounce Tooko as anything other than Too-ko. Seriously, I should just spam emails to every translation group doing Bungaku Shoujo to change.

Oh yeah I remember that part from the atogaki, it all worked out for the better though. The problem with Touko is that you are pretty much stuck looking at the surface for the most part early on as she is there to stabilize Konoha. So you get all the lol comments when things are going well, then shit hits and you get one very brief peek at what's beneath. I don't know what Nomura's intentions were originally, but in the end, that's how Touko turns out. During the first vol though, the gap is definitely odd, though I didn't mind it too much because the whole thing with Takeda was surprising the hell out of me. Vol 2 also caught me blindsided with the twist, so again I didn't mind. By vol 3 we already have a pretty good sense for her and it all feels rather natural.

I'd be pickier about what I am reading, but who am I kidding. The biggest use of Japanese to me wasn't all the anime related stuff, it was a 3rd language's worth of reading materials. My mentality pretty much just works like "Read more, read the better stuff a few more times than the rest".

EDIT - omg katanagatari with a rip that's actually possible to download, Nanami~
