Just started working on my backlog after a few weeks of no watching, I'm on ep. 17 of Hyouka from a few seasons ago. A lot of people liked it and it has fantastic art and animation, but my lord it is boring the hell out of me...
That's a pretty accurate description of the show.

Because anime is a VISUAL medium.

For me, it kind of depends.
There is still a level of appreciation for the art and animation styles in various anime that I believe has merit, especially since anime is really the only place to experience it. Animated movies in the states has more or less disappeared in favor of CGI. I don't really have TV, but outside of Avatar, I really don't know what else has decent animation and art on TV anymore, because family guy and whatnot sure aren't worth mentioning in that department, imo.
However, I haven't had much issue getting through anime on a weekly basis, but some of them I would dread marathoning. Hyouka was fine on a weekly basis, but I dunno of marathoning it would be that fun.

I think the word solely is important there. -3-

Art/scenery and animation is always a plus but for me characters, plot (if applicable for specific show) and audio/music is more important. Music maybe a bit less so, since in the end it too is like icing on the cake.
Or icing on a turd in the case of Guilty Crown.

We were set up by the music.

Is "Another" a good show? I happened to come across it on YT so I'm wondering if I should watch it (12 episodes) or finally start watching SAO (which apparently is very good? o_O)

Another is a great comedy.
SAO is a great action/drama/romance/mystery/adventure/psychological/deep/dark/pretentious/comedy/sci-fi/fantasy/supernatural story. It excels at everything!
+ Show Spoiler +You're better off watching neither of them, though at the very least SAO is a fun watch because it has some nice animation and fight scenes + Yuki Kajiura, though I'd argue that Kajiura's tracks in this anime were pretty subpar and lacking.

Well Kajiura said at AX that she writes the music based off like rough scripts of the scenes so she probably looked at them and was confused by how bad the writing was so the music was subpar as a result.

Exactly lol. It's cool if you think an anime looks nice and if you like it for that, but to ONLY watch it because it looks nice just doesn't make sense to me.

The first half had horrible pacing issues, and the second half was just laughably bad. But its nice to look at, at least.

Just watched the Battle Royale movie (after reading the manga). The movie was pretty lacking compared to the manga. But I guess you can only fit that much in a movie. The movie also had its WTF moments...

If you enjoy/like both of then, good for you!

Or icing on a turd in the case of Guilty Crown. For me, anime is just like food or any other piece of art. The components help me think or talk about the piece, but how I feel is ultimately determined by how I absorb the gestalt.
So usually if any one part is glaringly awful or even incompatible with the rest, I have a negative reaction to the whole.

That's fine and all, but uhhh, he sorta explicitly asked for other people's opinions, so saying "Don't listen to any of the answers you get for your question" is kinda a bad response to what he asked. Plus, of course he would decide for himself if he likes them or not, lol.

I cant say Another was good, because it wasnt. The scares were pretty bad and the plot points never got explained. Pretty good example of how NOT to do a mystery horror. You're better off watching Higurashi which was actually good imo.

Yeah, but at least for me, I don't like reading other peoples opinions on shows because I either think its considered shit (this makes the show worse for me) or my expectations of it get high which also makes the show worse than it could have been. If he's not like that, good for him! But there's the possibility if he simply wanted to know whether the shows are worth his time or not.

Honestly, I think people should go into any anime, regardless of what it is, with low expectations. The easiest way to enjoy an anime is to have low expectations, and then find its better than what you thought. Similarly, the easiest way to not enjoy an anime is to have high expectations, and then get disappointed.

What do you guys think about Mirai Nikki. I just started watching it and while I have a few mild complaints I still enjoyed it.
