I think it's important that Luffy has a drive forward and endless enthusiasm that the other crew members don't have. [spoiler]Zoro turned down the invitation of baroque works, and spent years just being a low bounty hunter in East Blue.
I agree with the other, but where did you see that he spent years? He tells Luffy right after he sees him that he will survive the full month and that he can't die because he has a dream to fulfill. Luffy also "blackmails" him. After Zoro says that the swords are his treasures, he states that if he wants his swords back he would have to join. Also, after he joins Luffy he stated that if he got in the way of his dream, he will make him commit harakiri. My interpretation is that Zoro wasted a few years. He has had the same dream since he was a small kid, we know his flashback. He was 5-10 and already an eager swordsman, practicing all day.
And when Zoro is 19, he is still doing only bounty hunter work. Most likely he never left the East Blue either. Luffy goes to the grand line on his own accord, when Luffy is just 17.
Now, that seems like only 2 years difference, but we know he declined working for baroque works. An invitation to get into the big leagues. An invitation that could very likely get him closer to his goal. And Zoro, at the time he was introduced, quite clearly didn't head for the grand line himself, nor did he look for companions to go there. He decided that a small town issue was worth being a captive for 30(correct me if wrong) days.
I really like Zoro, but I think had he not met Luffy he would have still been in East Blue a year longer, when he was 20. Or 21. Or 22. Zoro alone would go at his own pace, but I doubt that his steps would be as big as the ones Luffy takes. In less than a year he came from east Blue, gathered a crew and traveled the first half of the Grand Line. Luffy had to stop at that point for 2 years because he found they were going way too fast.
I could write so much about how Oda is a genius. His characters feel like real people. They are joking a lot when things are going fine and they change how they behave based on what happened in the past.
Sanji was forgot on Little Island when the others encountered Mr 3(Galdino). He stumbled upon information that was useful(spoke with Crocodile). Also he found out that his crewmates would be ok without him(Zoro and Luffy can protect the others). In Alabasta he then used the name Mr Prince, trying to make it happen again and tackle the problems from a different direction. I don't quite remember the details, but he tried nevertheless. During the attack on Enie's Lobby he snooped around alone again and made a huge difference by finding the controls for the gate of justice, altering the currents which stopped the marine battleships from maneuvering and chasing the Strawhats effectively. Finding the gate controls was the reason they could escape.
These moments could theoretically have been done by multiple different characters. It would mean nothing special. But they all involved Sanji in a similar way. And they show he is improving. At being a *detective*. It worked for him in the past, he tried it again and he made a huge find. He didn't get the chance to do anything on Skypiea though, since that was just a full-on power struggle/war between Shalondians and Enel's priest army. There wouldn't have been anything of value Sanji can find, so Oda decided it wouldn't fit into that arc(other authors I know don't have that restraint).
And that's why I love this show. Oda has written a very good story, in which people develop as characters in other ways than becoming a better fighter. I have written in an earlier post about how Zoro is becoming the vigilant protector of the crew. One of Zoro's implied goals is to be never caught offguard and keep the others(and Luffy safe). He did get surprise attacked in the earlier arcs, he scolded himself for being careless, it happened less severe, but again, until he stopped joking around with the others altogether.

Baroque works is a criminal organisation. Zoro had no intention of becoming a criminal, that's also why he rejected Luffy initially.
The thing about Zoro is that he didn't knew how strong the world was. He only realizes that when he faces Mihawk.
Also, the bounty hunter work was so he would get some money, because he got lost in the sea. I don't think Zoro had any plan of leaving the dojo.
The thing about it, is that he is the only one that when Luffy finds him, he is still fixeted on his dreams, while the others have given up before meeting Luffy.
Yeah. I agree with you, Oda's story are great, and his chars are great as well.

AFAIK that isn't why Zoro turned the offer down. If I remember correctly, when they made the offer to Zoro to join, Zoro would only agree if they made him the boss, which they obviously turned down. Maybe was Tongue in Cheek, maybe it wasn't.

Oda takes alot of inspiration for his characters from actual people/myths from different cultures. There was some post on a mangastream thread where they say that sanji's character is based on the invisible man. Was a long post but some points were that his picture hasn't been taken yet and he always sneaks off to do something covert. Its also the one fruit he's always wanted but cant get. The role/idea fits him nicely since he's always been strong but has alot of other useful skills in and out of battle... while zoro has nothing else he's really good at.

No chapter release this week? Also now mangahere no longer hosts OP. Did they crackdown massively on those translating and posting OP or something?

I want to say managhere hasn't had it for over a year now, it got pulled along with naruto and bleach when it got licensed by an american company if i remember correctly. Mangapanda sucks when the chapter first comes out but its a chinese company so it'll never stop posting the chapters.... despite the translation errors.
Edit - yea, OP was on break.
