"American Sniper", *yawn*. "The imitation Game", mediocre at best. "The theory of everything", as a direct to TV movie maybe.
I literally just finished watching Whiplash. God damn was that amazing. I played percussion from age 5 all the way through high school so I really appreciate the music and how faithful they are to what it takes to actually be great in that movie. And that ending was simply amazing...there were so many parts that i was just blown away.

I think the parts about what it takes to be a great musician were quite cliché, and told very little about music but that ending ... that was one of the best scene i've ever seen in a movie.

Ive seen a lot of musicians complain that it tells very little about music but to me that wasn't what the movie was about. To me the movie was about the struggle while music was just the medium. Musically it actually wasn't that accurate, considering it's nearly impossible to play at the speeds he's playing with the method of drumming he uses, and to add to that all those scenes with his hands getting all bloodied that's not typical in drumming b/c (A)he would have already built calluses in his hands at those spots (B)he was probably gripping the sticks too hard (which makes it even more impossible for him to play at those speeds).
Also, I think things become cliched for a reason (its usually the truth) and if you're gonna make a movie like that you're probably gonna need to use the cliche otherwise it'll just seem untruthful and not work, imo.
My brother and I had this great discussion over what it takes to become one of the great ones in music. I was saying that generally the greatest musicians have all had some form of great suffering. The question is does the suffering create greatness or does how a person responds to the suffering create greatness? Our discussion went on to all the great musicians that died early through OD's/suicide and I used that as proof to my point that the great musicians generally face intense suffering (b/c usually the drug use is originally a way to find relief from the suffering). His response was not all the great ones die young like that using Paul McCartney as an example and I responded with, well who's better John Lennon or Paul McCartney? (even though like...lennon didn't die from OD, he still died young...and imo was still the better musician than McCartney).
What do you mean, "even though like...lennon didn't die from OD, he still died young"? Once it's acknowledged that Lennon's early demise had nothing to do with the factors you take to cause greatness, how does it in any way support your claim?
You might as well say, "Air bags kill. My neighbor had an airbag in his car, and he was shot in his apartment last week".
Well it's about the great one's dieing young. Would the general consensus on Lennon being one of the great ones still be a thing if we had another 40 years of his music? Especially after the whole Yoko thing... While that wasn't technically what my original argument was, it still is something that I recognize as a thing. Some of the greatest knowns in art/music are there (imo) simply because they died young, regardless of how it happened. Like they could have just been really really good but then after their death they got elevated into being greatness.

I completly agree that the movie is not really about music, and I think it's using clichés/exageration on purpose. It's sometimes walking a fine line between ridiculous (the bloodied hands) and amazing, but at the end it worked for me.
On the other hand I just watched Birdman and well... what an overrated movie. I just felt like i was watching a product taylor made to please the critics and for the oscar, which is ironic considering the theme of the movie.
Birdman I am surprised how amazing the one cut worked, the script and it are build for each other. Without it, the movie would still be awesome but the one cut really make it stands out so much.
At the beginning I was worried it is just going to be some gimmick to sell the movie, but damn it worked so very well. I wonder how many years we have to wait until we see another masterpiece like this one.
the one shot makes it so that everything you see and experience is rushed and just feel pressured and realistic. Lots of things happened and you just keep dashing through them, you don't have time to stop and think "hang on, that was supposed to be important/huge", life just keeps throwing you events and you only have the initial reactions and not much more until you are more free.
9.5/10
Whiplash Also a surprise to me, it is solid all the way through. It's powerful and ends perfectly, the main cast selection is perfect. If I were to say though, it is a bit too linear in the story. Hope and fail, hope and fail, hope and fail and ending it with one big bang hope. My taste is more of the 'pulp fiction" style where ups and downs are a bit more "unexpected"
8.5/10
Hungergames: Mockingjay P1 My honest opinion is that this part of the novel is just a difficult one to transfer to a big screen. (I am also having doubts on the next game of thrones season as well) This movie focused on the less action packed and possibly the worst element of the novel (the romance), so I am not surprised at the low rating. It is a shame because personally I think if the romance was non-existing or better designed, I would say the movies all have been quite nicely done. Imo they should have just released the whole mockingjay as one final movie.
He just EZmoded his way through the entire thing. He was an awful character who avenged the theft of his car and injuring of his dog by brutally murdering probably about 200 people. The story was poor, and Keanu's acting ranged from passable to absolutely terrible. There wasn't adversity, there wasn't cause, it felt like playing GTA, on very easy with an aimbot.
The directing/cinematography etc. was pretty good but you can't polish a turd. The story is terrible, and the action is repetetive to say the least. He just headshots everyone from close range. Maybe that's the point but Jesus Christ a bit of variety wouldn't hurt. It was paced OK. Again though, you can't polish a turd.
Constant action in these movies can be done well. The Raid was excellent. You genuinely felt like getting through it was going to be hard. This was just EZ from beginning to end.
i thought it was super brutal (which turned me off at the time but in other mood it might turn me on lol) but i got bored around half way, turned it off and deleted it a few days later
OH YEAH I REMEMBER he literally shoots like 100 men in the head in a row which is a bit sickening then this girl tries to kill him and suddenly hes like oh a girl i mustnt hurt you , super fucking femininist bullshit right there i cant stand it that girl should have been chopped up in seconds.
i'm half way thru Divergent and its REALLY good post apocalypse scifi with a twilight feel. why hasn't anyone heard of this film>????? 2014 scifi.....
i watched 10 minutes of Pyramids before deleting it. its a shame but the dialogue literally caters to 6 year olds and only then REALLY FUCKING STUPID 6 year olds. it could have been like The Descent (pretty good) but i'll never know unless i watch it muted
TV: black sails episode, K-On anime is really good after poor 1st episode, and found a modern animal documentary series Wonders of the Monsoon
just put on Lars and the Real Girl coz in the mood for a decent romantic comedy (rec me something like 500 days of summer or forgetting sarah marashell, i loved those) ehh this movie is a bit downbeat lol...not what i wanted
oh fuck i watched Fury too, it was good, def go watch this. its not modern american BS, its set in ww2 or something
Divergent is not unheard of and was mentioned a couple of times in this thread. But i think It's just not good. Maybe 'OK' at best but probably more 'annoying'. If you watch the second half you probably agree. There are also some movies very similar to it.
Heheh. I just saw The Archer and the Sorceress. It is quite poor. I have seen quite a few poor 80's fantasy films and this is very poor.
The main character is the son of a barbarian king who is trying to unite other barbarians agains some evil Dynasty. The son aka Archer somehow gets framed for the death of his father.
I think the plan was to find some wizard to clear Archer's name and get back the crown. Sorceress was going to kill Archer because his grandfather killed her mother, but she doesn't because... reasons? But decides she'll find the same wizard and kill him because apparently he motivated Archer's grandfather to kill her mother... um, I guess? But they got a little distracted and never found the wizard, much less kill him. And they somehow never got back to the whole clearing the name and re-establishing his kingship. Or really dealing with the threat of the Dynasty- Unless the entirety of the Dynasty was the evil king and his ten snakemen thugs that followed them around the entire movie.
Instead they fight some other random evil that was threatening some other city.. and then the movie ends. Also, there's some thief guy that's talking about percentages and profit- typical Rogue stuff and has zero reason to join Archer. But for some reason he joins forces, for again... reasons.
It seemed a bit of waste to call it "Archer and Sorceress" when the Sorceress just makes the odd appearing until the city where she and the Archer suddenly join forces. Furthermore, the big battle at the end takes place in some area where her magic is useless... so then she has to fight with a dagger. So much for the Sorceress. The grenade launching arrows were pretty hilarious though.
It felt like there was a lot of backstory crammed into a super short film and that nonetheless made little sense as they pick up a new adventure and forget about the last one. Maybe it was supposed to be a pilot for a never realized tv show, but even then...
Poor acting, very low budget and pretty terrible synth soundtrack.
tldr- Very much akin to a poorly constructed D&D campaign where the characters are thrown together haphazardly and the players go of the rails to mess with their DM. That probably sounds more interesting than the actual film.
