I finally watched "Being John Malkovich" after meaning to for like 12 years.

What a fucking crazy movie... It's filled with so many ideas and whacky characters that I feel it kind of get lost at some points but overall it was highly enjoyable. Malkovich is such a perfect choice for the movie.

I hadn't seen yet, I really enjoyed it, Bale as an impressing actor as usual, Jackman pretty good too.

Good thriller in the 50's.

I could turn my brain off and enjoy the scenery and come away with the same experience as somebody trying to figure out where the movie is going. It goes nowhere.
5 maybe 6 out of 10 at best. The acting, like I say, is phenomenal. There are some very beautiful scenes. But that is it.

I agree. The movie was boring and I'm not sure what it was trying to do. It was just very dull and not much happened. It did not tell a story or give you a new perspective.

I don't remember if I gave this movie a review before. There are many movies though that have great acting and are interesting. They just don't get very popular for some reason.

Edit: Many movies with great acting and story do actually get popular. For instance Black Swan would've won the hearts of many of the harsher critics on RT as well as the general public.

What an amazing film. One of my favourites of all time.
Kaufman is one of the greatest film writers of all time. He leaves you with that feeling that you're not quite sure what he was trying to say, but he said it really really well.

It's not bullshit at all, it's a rather good analysis in fact, wether you like the movie or not : PTA clearly choose to cut any transition scene and the scenes are very loosely related. He wanted to focus on his study of characters, and my opinion is that it did not work at all.
And the acting is unbearable, I thought I was watching a caricature of the worse of method acting.

It told A story, but not a GOOD story. We have 30 minutes of slow exposition on the main character only as he stumbles through being drunk on poison. Finally we are introduced to a few other characters that have any form of meaning on the movie (why does it take 30 minutes to do this?). We have an hour and a half of rising action. A 30 second climax with no huge significance, limited falling action and no resolution. No character development at all. We see glimpses of it, but no actual change.

What the movie is:
+ Show Spoiler +
drunk drunk drunk, nude, sex, drunk drunk drunk, amy adams jerk a guy off for 10 seconds, SOBER! drunk drunk end with sex and an almost comical reference to some introductory lines which are supposed to mean something (yes I know they are lines uttered by his master when he began the attempted brainwashing).

Two of them on this page are worth a watch, The Prestige and especially LA Confidential.

The Notebook
[image loading]

Oh The Notebook, what can I say about you? For good or evil (I'm not sure) one of the most culturally influential movies of our time, it's basically become the romance archetype of our generation. For example I'd say the later (outstanding) Ryan Gosling movie Blue Valentine can be easily read as almost a direct reaction to it, and it's far from the only one. It's definitely worth a watch no matter what, it's not boring and Gosling and Rachel McAdams stand out as extremely good. Whether you are buying what Cassavetes, Nicholas Sparks and them are selling though, I can't really rule on it. It's got me thinking about the whole culture though, that's for sure. It's undeniably well made and executed, seeing how effective it's been for so many people.

I rarely (almost never) use RT.com to find and look up movies... I use IMDB... people who use both can you explain which is better and why? Or when what is better then the other...

As far as feedback on movies goes RT features critics most prominently. IMDB features the average internet user. Depends what viewpoint you are most interested in.

I wouldn't say either is better although I mostly use RT

on IMDB anyone can vote and influence the score, on RT only movie critics (whatever exactly qualifies as one, I dont know exactly)
But if you go on RT, dont just look at the % but also the average score, the percentage just says how many critics a)liked it (score of 3/5 i believe) or b) didnt like it, whereas the average score also factors in how high their rating was, more like imdb.

And yeah like zaproffo says one advantage of RT is that the critiques are directly linked, and prominent critics are featured

I think both are pretty bad, at least if you limit yourself to the mark, imdb being the worse in this case. Personnally I think the best way to find new movies is to find a few people (either critics or a friend or a guy met on the internet who talks a lot about movies in my case^^) which you think give solid and thought out advice. Another advantage being that after a while, you'll know the difference between you two, which will help you a lot more.
But overall, never trust the mark, the reasonning behind it helps much more to make a good choice. It will also help you understand the movies better, and in turn, enjoy them more.

I recently went and saw Place Beyond the Pines. I thought it was really well acted and really well shot. Even though the film does have a longer than average runtime (141 min) I found every scene to be moving the story forward, meaning that none of them were unnecessary. While it isn't fast paced, it is some of the best and most well rounded drama i've seen recently.

I use both to check movie reviews but usually only after watching them.

I don't feel like anyone's opinion of a movie would correlate with my enjoyment level than some youtube scenes, reading of the wiki, TL posts, or trailers would. I've read some really good imdb reviews however. I don't think I've liked many RT reviews.

I just watched Cloud Atlas. I thought the movie was awesome but I can see why people wouldn't like it. It was extremely grandiose in nature: it has six storylines, is 3 hours long and has many characters. There are things that prevent it from seeming extremely pretentious as this information might suggest however. It does not try to be overly subtle with its message (maybe reinforces it a bit too much, perhaps), it doesn't shy away from a few humorous moments or plots, and its dialogue is extremely palatable (if you can get past the occasionally corny accents). It's unfortunate that so much attention has been drawn to things like make-up and accents since I feel that this film was really quite unique, at least among recent films. Not only that but I was genuinely moved by the end of the film ("What is an ocean but a multitude of drops?"). Ultimately I would say that if you do not mind watching a long movie and feel that you could deal with a few strange technical decisions then I would definitely recommend you watch it.

I realize that this is quite some time after the release of the film but really I loved it and felt like I could write a little about it.
