Wong Kar-Wai's breakout film Chungking Express (1994)

I remembered how much I love Wong Kar-Wai's use of colors when seeing this again. It's a whimsical and quirky dual-story romance of break-ups and moving on in the urban jungle of Hong Kong and is certainly a lighter and more uptempo Wong Kar-Wai movie. The first story does have a crime angle, but it's more of a homage to Hong Kong gangster movies than a serious plot line. I could do without the slow motion and time lapse except for when it finally works towards the end. But his quick editing is what really stuck out to me in this one. The drug smuggling scenes and when Faye is messing with 663's apartment being the stand outs. I still vastly prefer Happy Together and In the Mood for Love, but you cannot go wrong with any Wong Kar-Wai film.

This was a fantastic movie. Unique plot, great acting and definitely several plot twists that make you want more.

Berserk Golden Age Arc ii: The Battle for Doldrey

Holy shit, I never knew anime could be so good. 9/10

Can anyone recommend some good anime, preferably movies since I cant sit through a whole series.

I watched the first two movies.

+ Show Spoiler [plot] +
It's about a man (Guts) who fights in an alternate medieval time. He fights under his general Griffith and with a fellow female captain Casca. The man starts off as a young boy who is strong but lacks restraint, hence the name of the movie: Berserk. Over time he becomes more and more controlled.

In the first book you see Griffith wants to gain fame and glory, and rule the world, it's his main goal in life. He doesn't care about drinking or women. So he lets his army get hired by the Midland King to advance himself. He and Guts win several key fights. In the first movie however, they meet a Butcher/Flying Minotaur Demon who recognizes Griffith's necklace and warns Guts that Griffith will bring about death. Foreshadowing.

In the second movie Griffith and Guts storm an impenetrable Forretress using some guile and Guts' great fighting abilities. They end up winning the war and the country returns to peace. Everything is good.

Guts wants to now leave Griffith's army and pursue his own dream. But Griifith doesn't let him, so Guts has to duel him and win to leave. Guts wins, and leaves, but Griffith is sad that he has actually lost a duel. He's probably never lost to another man before. So he ends up sleeping with the princess that night to console himself.

I'm not sure why this was a big deal. Griffith was the finest lord in all the land and the king had no heirs. Griffith would have been a fine heir to the throne, and the princess loved Griffith, but instead the King (due to his irrationality) has Griffith captured and tortured and tries to kill off Griffith's army. A few of his army escape.

Now the third movie was only recently released and I can not find it anywhere online. I think in the third movie, Griffith gets released after a year of torture but is severely crippled. He has a new dream now to marry Casca and have kids. But he sees Casca and Guts kiss. Then there's an eclipse or something and he somehow sacrifices the rest of his loyal army to become a demon and gain a new body.

He rapes Casca and drives her insane and makes Guts watch. And that's all I know. Something else happens in the third movie but I haven't seen it.

The movie has crazy good animation and storyline. The combatants move quickly in heavy armor and very fluidly and many perspectives are used to show changes in battle. You can recognize characters, even minor ones, and they all have a personality.

The dialogue is fairly boring though and like many animes it doesn't delve very deeply into philosophy. I'm not complaining, I prefer my anime like this. I just don't think you should go into the movie looking for an analysis of predestination.
I think in our modern age technology has evolved to become more addictive. The things that don't give us pleasure aren't used as much. Work was never meant to be fun, but doing it makes us happier in the long run.

If you think it's too hard there are solutions other than asking for a nerf, getting better is the first that comes to mind.

Argo was good, but not overwhelming. It grabbed the oscar more for lack of serious competition rather than being outstanding.

Don't take oscars so seriously.

Some best films of recent years:

- Argo.. Really? Nice movie and all but couldn't consider it the best film of the year.
- The Hurt locker.. Well, I just.. I don't even.. Really the best?
- LOTR return of the king. Right.

Oscar for best picture often does a good job of a decent movie, but don't follow it blindly. Sometimes the competition in hollywood just isn't there.

Just for recent years I'll add The Artist, The Departed, and worse of all Slumdog Millionaire and Shakespeare in Love, can't decide which is the worst.

Yeah even with Zero Dark Thirty's serious misgivings, it's still better than Argo, but the Academy doesn't pick controversial flicks. All the other better movies were released earlier in the year which usually is a death sentence for the Oscars.

Saw both today. Both 7,0 on IMDb and equally bad in terms of storytelling and dialogue. Still, Dredd somehow managed to entertain me, while Reacher was just a very poor film.

On a different note: can't wait for Iron Man 3!

Have to agree here. The visuals are very nice, but they hang it all on the plot being a mystery, but pretty much halfway in when a certain someone pops on screen you pretty much instantly figure out the remainder of the, rather long, movie. Meh,
I'm a man of my word, and that word is "unreliable".

While I haven't seen The Artist the other movies you mention are decent movies. They aren't in any way bad (even if your taste is different) I'm just not sure any of those were the best that came out that year.

The main reason for the oscars (imho) always pick generic movies is that most can get behind them were as controvesiel movies tend to divide people. Most people will watch the winner of best film and either be: a) Its really good or b) its an okay movie.

The first two are average, the last two are somewhere between bad and horrible. I think Slumdog is one of the dumbest and ugliest movie I've seen, its success will forever remain a mystery to me, a bit like how some people can think Shawshank is good. I kinda understand the Nolan phenomenon, but those...

The Departed is quite good imo, dunno about the others. It's true though that Oscar decisions tend to be questionable at times.

As for the anime talk from last page, you might wanna check out The Wolf Children Ame and Yuki (by the director of The Girl Who Lept Through Time).

Well the film has quality, that's for sure, and I think there could be a lot to discuss. But I also think Scorcese benefits a lot from his past reputation, and that had another person made The Departed, people would be a lot less indulgent. I might be a bit too harsh in return though, I'll admit that.

I guess I can see where you are coming from.
It probably wouldn't be too unreasonable to think the Oscar was somewhat of a consolation award for Scorsese. I don't really care about that though, or about Oscars in general for that matter.

By the way, happy birthday.
