I mean Truman show is one my favorite movies, but it's not exactly Bergman or Kieslowski. (Like plenty of others on the lists.) Tree of life was pretentious as all hell. I get the whole meditation over growing up thingy, but it was just a huge snorefest. Primer is too complex for its own sake, much like memento it's complex for the sake of being complex.

Zaat! +1 on Vertigo. Another great one is Rear Window. I always thought Mystic River was overrated as a film, and not really all that thought-provoking. Just depressing as hell. I've heard great things about the novel it's based off of though. Dennis Lehane is a terrific noir novelist (he also wrote the novel Shutter Island is based off of). Plus the musical score was...let's just say, something else. huh, that's funny because I watched it for the first time while high too and flipped out on the parade scene as well. Liked it a lot more later in a normal setting. You should give it another chance!

Given the list of movies he gave, advising Tarkovski or Bergman doesn't seem like a good idea. He wants movies with twist ending. Just watch Usual Suspect in this case.

I get that, was just saying that if he was after movies that required a bit of thinking, many of the movies on those lists aren't really great picks either.

I agreeW, but I already have a pretty low opinion of his list at thé beginning, so I'm not convinced I should give him advice, even though I'm sad to see what passes for an intelligent movie in this thread.

Well my personal definition of an "intelligent movie" is that it requires the viewers to be paying attention at almost 100% of the time looking for clues and symbols to fill in what other people may call "plot holes". And sometime first time viewing will not simply be enough to get a complete grasp about the main theme, arching plot(s) of the movie. And once you get it, an imaginary lightbulb sparks up in the mind. The Usual Suspect does fit really well in that criteria in a sense that the main character outsmarted the cop in any way possible and just let the audience appreciate the small intricacies. So does Tarkovski or Bergman in this case resembles to anything close to that of, my arbitrary definition of such films?

The Prestige, C. Nolan From what I have seen, the best movie from à director I don't like. It has its weaknesses, such as a pretty boring last 40mins due to bad pacing and too many twists, Bale's acting is his usual Keanu Reeves face, but Nolan's ci ema is perfect to deal with this subject, the rest of the cast is excellent, the cut of the first hour saves the movie and the experience is overall very pleasant. Solid movie, I can recommend it :-)

Edit : you can sleep through most of Usual Suspect and get it. The reasons why the movie work are a bit more complicated'

![]() Saw this on recommendation from this thread...... 2/10 The best thing about this movie is the opening scene, because it was actually clever and deluded me into thinking the rest of the movie would be like it, and the closing scene, which put a merciful end to a movie about an hour and 30 minutes too long. Hand-held cam, black and white, and mockumentary snuff film does not an artsy cult hit movie make. Several painfully awkward scenes that dragged on forever(drunk scene, rape scene), and just completely boring throughout. Sure, there were occasional moments of dark comedy, but they were few and far between. I ended up watching a stream on my other monitor about half-way through just because it was so utterly boring.

Doesn't make it a good film though, like rmutts toilet probably most influential art piece of all time, but it still sucks. Also I watched old boy again, and while it has some clever dialogue and great camera work I really didnt find it all that compelling, the way scenes entered into new scenes was so rushed and rubbed me the wrong way, + while that fight scene is still amazing I saw it on bluray huge TV, and that knife that sticks in him is soooo fucking cg - it literally looks like some YouTube kids videos work seriously rewatch it its pretty bad.

+ Show Spoiler + at first I was annoyed at how much the film emphasized that Algiers was killing his clones. like, I got the implication as soon as I saw the pile of hats, do we really have to keep going over this? but then I realized - the movie isn't about how good the trick is, it's about how much the trick costs. he kills himself... what, 50, 100 times? you only really start to appreciate it after seeing it over and over.
