She definitely plays the part perfectly, but I agree that she should be more attractive. I always thought of her as emitting a "sweet/innocent" look to the realm, while she is quite different behind closed doors. The actress (IMO) automatically gives off the cold/calculated bitch vibe without having to reveal it first.
On the flip-side, I think they also got Dinklage's look wrong. He's a fantastic actor, but Tyrion is supposed to be grotesque (different colored eyes and ugly), whereas they actually cast a handsome dwarf.

And thank god for that. Who doesn't love handsome dwarves?
I really really like him in the role, I feel like Tyrion and Jaime are the most well casted characters. Even though yes, Tyrion is supposed to be way uglier, lol.

Well its a tv show, and you have to take that into account. I mean technically when they first come to winterfell Cersei's wagon is supposed to be 3 stories high, but in the show its just a regular coach. Sure they could have at least given him a different color eye with a contact, but IMO casting dinklage as Tyrion for his acting skills outweighs any facial deficiency that was left out from the books. Some things aren't transferable from page-screen and if they casted a shittier actor because he was uglier, the show would not be what it is.
EDIT: Lol wtf? Someone reported my post and I got a warning because I had accidentally typed my reply under the spoilers at first. Lighten up for ffs, try not to be such a sad person (to whomever reported me)

Well you are definitely right that Tyrion is described way uglier and more grotesque, but don´t forget - it´s still (American) Television. There won´t be like really ugly people in there ^_^. I also doubt people would watch that - Dinklage did a superb job nonetheless and we could not ask for more to be honest.

Seriously, how many good dwarf actors are there? Why does it matter whether he is ugly when his performance is good enough to get an award?

I think cause I said I want a prettier queen to fit with the books, he wants an uglier dwarf kind of thing.
I feel that Cersei is okay for the part, but I don't think she gives off enough of that sweet innocence at all, looks or acting wise. Also I think it's a little bit better to want prettier actors rather than uglier ones o.o poor Hodor.
And I really hope they step up the budget and effects in the next few seasons. I want to actually be in awe of 40,000 Dothraki, not 200. The line should be miles long and miles wide, not miles long in rows of two. I think that really hurt the believability of the show. Same thing goes for Robert's caravan. Not large enough and wide enough by far.

Going to the event in Vancouver today. Hoping to get Dinklage to sign my book if he's there. Don't know exactly who's going to be here but I'm hoping he's one of them. If not I'll settle for Jon snow. If I get some cool pictures I'll put them up.

You guys can not expect the actors to exactly look like the characters described in the book. It is perfectly normal that charcaters will not always look like you imagined them. The most important thing is that they actually play the character well, portray him the way it is supposed to be.
And imo the cast has done an exceptional job in doing just that. I am just rewatching the first season, and I have to say the amount of attention that is paid to portraying the relations of the characters to each other, their attitudes etc. is just great. Much more detailed than you would ever see in a movie.
Btw the looks of armor, clothes etc. has also been changed a lot from the books to the TV series. And I am quite glad about that, because in the books that stuff was just overdone (with jewels, gold, ornaments etc). Would look just corny / kitschy in real life.

There is a big difference between wanting the characters to look the way you imagined them and wanting the characters to look the way they're described by Martin. Not to mention, the fact that Tyrion (in the story) is supposed to be grotesque is actually important. He's portrayed as someone who is perceived as a monster by everyone, and only has his incredibly sharp wits and powerful family to make do. On the show, he's just a dwarf, with the same incredibly sharp wits, but other than his stature not terribly difficult to look upon.
That said, someone above made the excellent point that the pool of dwarf actors is probably exceedingly small, and Dinklage does a fantastic job with the role. Given the choice of somebody who may not look the part but plays it perfectly, and vice versa, I'll take what we've got every time.

Better they didn't try something they weren't sure about making great, than trying and failing. It'd be great with epic scaled battles and what not but if they are to do it, they should do it properly with a big budget (which they proabably have now).
There's nothing worse than trying to do amazing special effects (LOTR was all special effects) without an army of animators etc. with you.

It's a 'adaptation' , it's not going to be a spitting image of what the book portrays and it doesn't need to. People get hung up on the little things too often, when the over arching story , characters, and interactions are what truly matters, is also done very well.

I think another factor is that, it's much harder for an audience to connect with and be charmed by an actor who is hideous-looking. Even for male viewers, the attractiveness of an actor makes a large difference in whether they respect the character. Sure, in certain cases, you need the character to be grotesque, but here I think it's perfect that he's so charming and so good-looking, while also being an outcast from his family for his physical defects.
Don't forget, it would have been easy for them to ugly Dinklage up for the part. Makeup can do wonders. It was a choice to leave him the way he looks.

Am I the only one who was slightly annoyed at the choice of venue for "explaining" the motives and backstories of a couple of characters? I'm thinking mainly Theon and the whore, and Littlefinger (the scene where he's writing with 2 whores 'practicing' in the background). It just seems to me like they go out of their way to include (softcore) 'pornography'. I understand it can't be as subtle as it's done in books, but why do it like this?
Also, after reading book 1 (and being halfway through book 2), the gay scene between Renly and the knight of flowers seemed a bit out of place. Is it just to set up the characters for what happens in book 2, or was it always there in book 1 as well? Did I just miss when it was implied in the first book, or was it never implied in the first place?

I agree. And while Dinklage is not ugly by any measure, I feel like the contrast between him and the other characters is enough to establish his deformity.

Nah, actually first time I saw Ros and Tyrion getting it on was pretty repulsive, here is a dwarf having sex with a beautiful whore and having the arrogant smirk on his face. But of course, as the series progresses on you began to love him because his oh so charming.. Probably my favorite vertically-challenged person in the world right now.

Hot naked women, whats not to like? The book was not very 'subtle' with its sex scenes, I don't know where you got that idea from.
