Yeah the only serious writer who has been less subtle with sex scenes is Robert Heinlein and that is because he was obsessed with incest.

I think he's more referring to the TV show trying to convey some of the more subtle ideas through sex scenes, like Littlefinger and Theon's backstories, as well as what is going on between Renly and Ser Loras. They could have explained Theon and Littlefinger without the backdrop of sex (and people would probably pay more attention too), but as for Renly and the Knight of Flowers, they would have had to have a lot more dialogue spread out over the season to hint that there was something sexual there, OR they can show a couple minutes of homoerotic screenplay. At least that decision made a bit of sense, even if it took me by surprise.

I wasn't talking about sex scenes, but the way they decided to add in (in my eyes, unneeded) sexscenes just to explain the motives of certain characters.

Knowing that there was something sexual there does make some events in the second book make more sense. I'm not against sex scenes at all, and most of them make a lot of sense from a storytelling POV. I think it's good that HBO didn't decide to cut certain important sex scenes (like Daenarys/Drogo, and some of Tyrion's scenes). I just question the decision to use sex scenes to explain subtle motives, especially in the case of Theon and Littlefinger. It felt to me as if they were trying to force in more nudity (and hot lesbian sex) just for the sake of it. That said, can't wait for Osha to be... explored more ^^

I love the books so far and while I don't think the series are as good (then again, I don't ever think a TV-series or film can be as good as a good book), I still really like it and it's one of my favourite things going on on TV atm. No idea why I'm not allowed to express doubt about whether or not something was portrayed as well as it could without it being shoved under the rug as "can't please everyone". Let me put it this way then: did you personally think the background of Theon and how he ended up at Winterfell, or the story of how Littlefinger came to love Cat was best told in a sex scene?

Look, how else are you going to explain bits of the story that is *history* or *backstory*? Littlefinger runs brothels. Who else is going to tell his story about how he loved Catelyn if not some insignificant whores who don't know shit? Is he going to tell that story to Varys or any of the other characters you know? As for Renly and Loras, they pretty much summed that up as quickly as possible. On TV, you can't just tell history stories constantly, the viewer has to find this stuff out somehow. So, yes, I agree with the producers that that was the best way to present these things. When you saw Theon, Lord of the Iron Islands, with a whore, did your opinion of him change?
