"They have my son!" After Tywin's speech to Jaime about the family name and how it's the only thing that lives on, it must be really hard for that character to acknowledge he looks weak.
And then later on, when Sam is trying to convince Jon not to leave, Sam is finally not a coward. There's a really theme of transformation in this episode. Sansa finally stop being a whimpering girl and actually tries to do something to change her situation, she fails but it's a decent start at a change.
Is it Tywin seeing the value in his son, or Tywin realizing that Jaime is lost now and that he's forced to consider Tyrion as the new family heir?
Tywin just wants someone capable handling business down at King's Landing. Ned's beheading shows that the people at KL can't handle business and can't keep Joffrey on a leash. He's sending someone to fix a problem and is just nice to Tyrion because he wants something out of him. He knows showing some acceptance will have a major effect because he's pretty much never given any to Tyrion. I think deep down he still despises the deformed son that cost him his wife.

[Very minor spoiler ahead] Take Episode 8 for example, when Barristan Selmy is relieved of his command of the Kings Guard. While he is leaving, the other Kings Guards are sheathing their sword, or at least trying to. If you look again at the far right knight you'll notice that he's yet to sheath his sword by the time the camera is switched - that's almost a full six seconds! These knights are supposed to be the best of the best meaning they're comfortable enough to at least learn how to pull out, wield, and SHEATH THEIR SWORD efficiently, and I'm very disappointed at how poorly the actors portrayed the later part.
The actors in Takashi Miike's 13 Assassins did a superb job in this specific area. If you haven't watched 13 Assassins I highly recommend it, it's even been mentioned in the movies forum multiple times on teamliquid. If you do watch it, please watch how smoothly the actors are able to sheath their katanas. They didn't even look at their scabbard. A lot of the actors in Game of Thrones did look and still had trouble putting away their swords.
Um that was kinda of the point. It's showing how shitty the Kingsguard has become. Which is why Barristan said he could defeat 5 of them at once. The only good fighter left in the Kingsguard is the Hound (they don't show his coronation in the show, but you see the white armor in the later episodes. dunno if people caught that) and ironically he hates knights
I don't think that's the point at all. Barristan is the greatest knight in all the realm. Thats why he was able to cut through all five at once. Him leaving marked the loss of the last honorable man in the King's Guard, but theres no reason to say that they're not skilled swordsman.

Everyone on that council is Cersei's creature, Kings Guard included and notably with Barristan off of the Lord Commander spot well Jaime moves up, naturally so that completes that. Ser Barristan is not done justice in the show, I just finished with book 1 and his character is so much more interesting. Now that the first season is done, read up on his exploits and legacy.
No, its been mentioned a few times that it's the greatest man made structure ever made.
I think the awesome ass elevator is an invention of the movie; its slightly different in the book from what I've read. Much less cool. Still same general idea though.

IDK, I doubt Varys would be seeing Ned and trying to save him for the Queen, I felt like he was telling the truth in the dungeons.

Well, that's your speculation. In the books it is made very clear that Meryn Trant is a passable swordsman, but a horrible person, while the rest of the kingsguard are completely incompetent idiots. The Hound is by far the best swordsman (and person) among them and despises knights for reasons I don't want to spoiler. Obviously I don't count Jaime Lannister in this because he is currently held by the Starks and season 2 will continue his story.

In the books they also have an elevator.
Which, I think if you carefully read the post you quoted you will see, is what he said.
