I was really expecting a bit more from HBO and the actors on this one, seeing what HBO did with Rome for example. + Show Spoiler [ep5] + Jamie vs Ned was complete bullshit... I mean, supposedly the most skilled swordsman in the seven kingdoms and a veteran of no less than 2 wars duking it out and it looks like some kindergarten kids swinging at each other... They could do one of the two things: 1. Hire someone who knows this stuff and make him teach the actors and prepare the choreography (like the most basic thing and the most common mistake in the movies: swing at the man, not at the sword). 2. Direct the show as a play in the theater (it got some potential when Baelish nearly broke the fourth wall once) so no one can complain about bad CG, fight scenes etc. It worked really well for Dune and The Children of Dune miniseries. Of course, there are more blatant errors in this show. Apart from swords being too shiny and fake-looking you have Jon having a 2 week beard in one scene and being clean-shaven in the next scene, which is supposedly taking place the same day, and then having his beard back again... They surely dropped the ball a couple of times. And on a sidenote, I was wondering how the show is received by people who haven't read the books... Except the obvious sex/incest complains (which I believe are valid, you can make your show look real and dirty without cramming tits and sex scenes into 1/3rd of every episode). I mean, the show is nice for me, because I've read 4 books of the series and I know the background and stories of the characters involved (not counting knowing what's going to happen in the future). If I haven't read the books I believe I'd be a bit lost, there's quite a few names, houses, places and pieces of history that are mentioned very scarecely, if at all, in the show and are quite vital to some of the plot lines which might confuse people. Hire someone who knows his stuff? The guy they got to do the action scenes has massive experience in the business. And movies and series will always have swordfights look exciting, mainly because a real sword fight takes about 2 seconds and ends with one of the two, if not both, screaming in pain before being stabbed to death. A real swordfight is neither exciting to look at nor something people would actually like to watch. As for new people watching the show, i think it's the arrogance of us book readers that's the problem. For some reason we consider all of the TV-watchers retarded. I got 4 friends to watch the show and noone of them have ever read any of the books and they are keeping track of it all just perfectly.

I think swordfights as in Game of Thrones are far more realistic than those in, say, Spartacus. These are big swords and people are trying to kill, not to entertain

It's neither realistic nor properly done, making it just bad. They should opt to either make it realistic (ie: short, simple, brutal) or entertaining (ie: a lot of useless swinging, dodging, slow-mo bullshit) and so far they fail at both. And just so you know what I'm aiming at here: Realistic version. Valhalla Rising Entertaining Version. Troy

But now I'm reading the first book and I think it's a pretty good book-to-media conversion, if not the best I've seen (Godfather may still take that crown)

The first thing I noticed was that with no background information, never having read the book and not even briefly been told what the show is about, you really really gotta pay attention to names and how they connect, cause they are being very very brief about introductions. If you prefer easy going action movies you are not only going to have a hard time understanding what the hell is going on, you are also going to be dissapointed by the slow paced action. Luckily I love a well told story and raw realism so to me the series so far is spot on.

I personally think the quality of the fights varies with each scene. In EP 5: + Show Spoiler + The fight between Sandor and Gregor Clegane at the tournament was rather reasonable, as was the fight between Cathelyn's entourage and the Wildlings on the way to the Eyrie (especially the somewhat ruffled-looking man that makes the comment about 'impregnating' the castle). On the other hand, Coster-Waldau's performance in the fight scene outside Littlefinger's brothel really failed to impress. His swings seemed stale to me, as if he were going through a routine rather than being busy actual fighting, and his guards (the stances, not the soldiers) are typical of Western television, 'cool'-looking yet impractical. His acting is great, but his swordsmanship needs some work. but overall, the fights tip somewhat to the realistic side, which is good.
