Good year of movies imo, they even missed Widow's out completely which imo was one of the best films of 2018. Feel sorry for the likes of First Man as well in which in any other year that would have gotten way more attention as that film was amazing (minus the the last 5 minutes of the film).
I think Roma is going to sweep most of the awards this season with The Favourite picking up the rest. Hoping Spiderman wins the Animated Feature as that also deserves major credit. They best not force Black Panther awards in the top categories, should stick to giving them the costume award or something as the film is not that good!
Hopefully Lady Gaga doesn't win best Actress and make a mockery of that either...
Also another year and more Oscar controversy with this time it being around the host. Seems like Oscars just like making controversy so they can advertise better idk? But like i said i think this year we have some great films.

Interesting choices, i think Spike Lee winning best Director would be good and the film was very good and i still don't think most people have heard of that film so would be good publicity for a very good film as well.
Interestingly you went with Remi and Queen Biopic for best actor and Green Book as best picture is the only film on the last i have not seen or heard about, will have to look into that. I do think Roma and The Favourite are going to sweep though.

I'm afraid "A Star is Born" is going to take a lot of statues. We've seen this pattern with La La Land etc.
|
How the hell is Roma nominated for best picture? It was boring A.F.
Also, BlacKKKlansman was fun, but really layered on the political message heavyhandedly at the end. Cut off the last 5 minutes or so, and it would be a much better movie.
E: looking over the list, the selection this year was actually pretty bad. They even got Black Panther in there. Which was definitely not Oscar material. And Bohemian Rhapsody and A Star is Born were obviously aiming at Oscars, but imho far from worthy.

I hope that Pawel Pawlikowski get an oscar for Cold war. Damn that'd be so sweet.

Are you surprised that the biggest self-pat-on-the-back award in the film industry pats itself on its back?
Academy Awards aren't worth shit.

funny story about last year's academy awards. I'm on the plane flying to Dubai, noticing they advertise Darkest Hour on the onboard entertainment film selection. Me being a huge fan of Mr. Oldman, caving in. Once I land I text my brother - "dude, if they don't give Oldman an Oscar for the best actor, i will riot". Ironically this was March 4th, so when I sent this text the Oscars ceremony was live with the next nomination being "the best actor", and Gary Oldman won! How awesome is that! Anyways, i hope Sam Rockwell gets something for his W portrayal in Vice!

Hopefully First Man takes home some gold. Amazing film. As for Bradley Cooper he got robbed last time he was nominated even those this film was real shitty.

Yeah i believe Apollo 11 is supposed to be even better than First Man, i loved that film still just the last 10 minutes were so rushed, wished they would have spent more time with the return to earth and the rehab. Still the acting and portrayal of Neil Armstrong was fascinating for me to watch.

Well didn't expect Bohemian Rhapsody to win all the awards it did, didn't expect Roma to win so few nor Black Panther to do so well. Thought the Favourite would also win more than it did also. Still i think the actor/actress awards were done well this year.

Black Panther won best score. Can anybody who has seen it remember anything about the music?

All, in the year of our lord, 2019, we ushered in the post Crash era of the Oscars.

Fucking Green Book.
Fucking Bohemian Rhapsody for editing.
|
The award for editing I can deal with because they fired the director after shooting, so it was just that dude directing all the editing for the film and it somehow wasn’t unwatchable. It is still bad, but I can justify it in my mind.
The only good part about Green Book is that it will lead to another discussion of who votes for these awards and why.

But that's just what an editor does
And hell, I enjoyed Bohemian Rhapsody a lot (as a non-narrative film). I can totally buy the sound Oscars it got, Malek's performance was great, casting was top-notch all-around.
Feels like this year's Oscars make me angry. Lots of snubs, unfathomably weird picks. Yes, yes, the Academy is trash, Oscars are not about being the Best, but the Most. I don't know what it is exactly, just got under my skin.

The fact that Netflix spent more money on marketing and their Oscar push than the entire budget of Roma says a lot. And their voting system is a nightmare of multi-tiered choices that somehow all end with Green Book.

Its dumb to say "but first black people movie" but it was high budget orchestral music blended with African themes that also had an album of Kendrick Lamar work behind it as well. You see musicians have a song or two associated with a movie but black panther took it to the next level on that. It also paired the music well with its establishing shots. The violins during the dream sequences was a strong moment as well.
|
The music from that movie is really good, thematic and varied. And it’s got that really good rise while chanting T'challa during the first water fight.

I've seen Black Panther, Isle of Dogs and BlackKklansmen, and at least heard some Mary Poppins tunes, and Black Panther easily had the most memorable score among them. It had some really good scene and mood setters, and a lot of distinct leitmotifs for characters/groups, which I tend to enjoy.
That said, I would've preferred Spider-verse getting a nomination and the win for best score, but it was probably the end-of-year release that blocked a lot of their nomination chances (Animated was a shallow field this year, letting it sneak in). Probably deserved a best original song nomination as well.
