Insatiable - Netflix
I almost skipped this one, because of how aggressively it was marketed to me. Then my interest reemerged when Husky closed his youtube channel and I thought for a second, this actress looks a lot like his GF. Eventually I just wanted ONE episode to waste some odd 40 minutes and binged it until 5 am.
This series is stupid, until it is not. You know how in Suits they tried to change directions and make Mike into a banker, but lacked the skill to execute it in an interesting way and instead of an evolving series, we got a wallpaper/jargon change until they 180°ed and stuck to what they were good at? This is what makes this series special, they break the structure, with success. It is like a disgusting joke, where the comedian just keeps going to see how far they can push it. I laughed out loud at times. There isn't a redeemable character to be found, life sucks and it is beautiful. It is so over the top at times, but fully self aware. It blends teeny movie vibes with the absurd and I think it will alienate fans of either genre. It is one of the most original works I've seen in the last 10 years. I'd say, if you like Buffy or Firefly this might be for you, though it really stands on it's own. I was shocked to see how many of the actors are actually from the south, since I didn't buy any of their accents for a second. Maybe it is the attempt to speak southern, while still pronouncing clearly, really odd...
TLDR: Binged. Original, unusual, for fans of both, the absurd and Teenie Movies, but not either.
American Vandal on Netflix I just binged. Its actually really amazing. The concept is pretty cringy at first but the way they play off of the "true crime" shows on Netflix is just the start. They do some really amazing storytelling with "found footage" and the back half of the first season is some pretty amazing stuff.
Production values are pretty good with some legitimate cinematography and editing.
I have watched Money Heist on Netflix and after the first season i don't think i will continue. It's one of those crime shows that want to be clever so hard but in the end is just a series of stupid plotpoints connected with coincedence that are past off as pure genius. The promise of it all is so ridiculous that they have no other way but to go fantasy to make it work somehow. And of course on one hand the people involed are all so fucking clever but because then they have to make really stupid mistakes all the time to make the plot interesting. But what bugs me the most is the lazyness of the writing to set those plot points in motion. Like, i would really like to know how the laws of acoustics work in that world, the amount of time people can't hear other people plotting loudly and openly 3 meters away from them has to go double digits.
It is two season, 6 episodes per season, 30 minutes per episode, so a total runtime of 6 hours. It is not even in the same realm of brilliance as monty python, but it is the only thing I can think of to compare it to. You know how in real life you have to commit a capital crime in Norway to improve your living standards? If not check out Norway's prisons. + Show Spoiler +
This series contrasts modern political correctness with the viking-age and derives a rather surreal humor from it. Sadly they focus too much on the one character that constantly breaks the fourth wall, which destroys the immersion. And immersion is weirdly enough one of the strong points, since yes it is the viking age, but a slave that is meant to be buried alive just won't lay down and complains that it goes against his self-preservation. 3 of the 30 minutes of each episode are extremely gory, just to keep the contrast sharp, which might be too much for some. The other weak point is that in the end, the series is made up of 5 running jokes, that even in just 6 hours, if you binge, become rather dull. The guy I choose for the poster is the leader of a sister village, not the main village, and here they finally explore some different themes.
TLDR: If you can stomach short bursts of gore and like absurd humor then check this out I say.
The year is 2003, the fall of Polish communism never happened, and the Iron Curtain is still in place. In this dark alt-history thriller, a naïve law student and a world-weary detective uncover a conspiracy that has tyrannized Poland for the past 2 decades.
I was pretty skeptical about it in the beginning (knowing that the quality of Polish productions is as random as it gets) but I was very pleasantly surprised.
If you're into political thrillers and espionage movies this should be right down your alley.

Watching this and liking it so far. The politics feel weird but the English dub is good which is nice so I don't have to always be looking at the screen.
I just started watching Modern Family and I am 100% in love with this show. It's hilarious, the characters are well-developed, and somehow by the end of each episode it still manages to tug at my heartstrings.
Yeah Modern Family was definitely one of my soft spots for a long time. If I had to give a power ranking it would probably be: Jay>Phil>>Manny=Cam>Claire>pretty much everyone else. This being given it's the cast is strong and diverse and the show stays consistent for over the years, which is not easy to do. There's something about Ed O'Neill making him so wholesome in the show lol, maybe it's just because he's supposed to be the old, wise, successful guy.

And with an acceptable amount of older generation/ casual racism and homophobia that he's legitimately trying to overcome, which is impressive because it's so easy to be set in your ways when you're that old.

It is a feat in writing how they're able to balance that while keeping him as the "father figure" of the show. Guy has a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu from the Gracie family, hes low key in the 1% most deadly actors in the business.
Audio only in Japanese! How to love a minor in Japan. She 31, he 15 both like movies and are fans of the same director. After she lost her Job she never really became an adult and drifts through life, working as an usher in a cinema. Albeit a little simple, she is so, so relateable. This series was a suprise, it deeply moved me. It is finished, it tells what it wants to tell in it's 12 episodes. I think I finished watching it a couple of weeks ago, but only today I reflected about the ending and what it means, before I was emotionally too involved and so the ending left me flabbergasted. Not dissapointed, just truly confused.
About the ending (no-spoilers): It might be an overinterpretation, since it feels a little like analysing a poem, however considering the aspirations that gleam through the fabric that is the rest of the series, I think it actually is fantastic. It's like a well written essay that does not try to judge or conclude, but to be attentive and represent all ideologies fairly.
The supporting roles of her original Ex-Boyfriend and the friendly co-worker at the office job in comparison to the rest of the stellarly written roles feel shoe-horned.
TLDR: While sophisticated and a little artsy at times, also grounded, griping and relateable.

Currently on season 7... watching with my gf "How I met your Mother", "Friends" and "Big Bang Theory" while good, are the terrible quality imitations in comparison; this is probably the best sitcom around and will stay that way. I had watched random episodes before, but following a story line makes it even better.
Hopefully some of our younger members can enjoy it
If you liked Watchmen, but were like "This would be better if were not so cynical about human nature and had a low key, yet aggressive humanity to it."
A few days ago I didn't even know this series existed. Right now it's easily one of my favorite MCU shows (if not one of the favorite overall). For once we're given a lot of character development and depth. Some real struggles and pretty good story. One of the best things about this show is that we don't really know any more than the characters themselves so it's engaging all the way through. There are no "Look under the carpet! That's where the bad guy left something in previous scene!" moments since all the information we have is the same information characters possess.
I can seriously recommend it to anyone, not just comic book fans since there's very little superhero stuff in there anyway in traditional sense. The series is also really weird (but cool weird) at times and this can be an additional selling point for some - it definitely was for me, I love shows like American Gods and Hannibal with their trippy scenes.
I totally get why alot of people hated season 1. This time they turned the surreal up to 100. Its almost Lynch-like at times. Its still melancholy and beautiful, as well as being packed with weird new age spiritual woo woo, but its also filling a gap in the market for ambiguous, mythical tv.
Its not for everyone but its worth a watch if you're bored of the same old action/detective bullshit.
There's also a little dig at all the people who complained about the ending of season 1 which amused me.
I just finished it and the ending is fucking weird again haha. I loved this though. Somehow they were able to do things that were simultaneously ridiculous, awesome, laughable, stupid and profound. wtf lol
I binge watched the first 3 seasons and now have to wait weekly for each season 4 episode. It is painful to have to wait!
The show is set up in such a way that each character can really show off their acting chops. I'm totally in love with Eliot! Actually, with all of them. I can't get enough. It is full of Magic, syfy, great music and boundary pushing complexities!
On April 06 2019 16:02 Starlightsun wrote: New season of Cobra Kai coming out April 26th... first one was awesome, think I binge watched it in a day.
I think its a super interesting season moreso than the first. He realizes hes created monsters and hes losing control of them to the man who created him.
The first season had some killer moments. The way it dealt with bullies and the phycological damage that it manifests in people spoke a lot of truth in it.
The first season started out really good but they kinda forgot to build character arcs for many characters and had to rush this in the last 2-3 episodes. Imho that dragged it down pretty hard.

I don't think so. A lot of that middle part was the subtly of everyone's shift between being the bullied until they become the bullies. The cafeteria fight is incredible from so many angles. The intial part where he gets the courage to stand up to the bullies, His shock to being able to defend himself before knowingly and deliberately using violence and continuing to use violence until after hes brutalized multiple people hes confronted with what hes done before the roar of the crowd and the approval of the girl he likes blinds him forever. The rest of the season is him only seeing violence as the path to make things better.
But much subtler is the transformations of hawk whos scared to death of ever being buiilied again for his lip wildly overcompensates. Aisha starts with feeling that she shames her father and being bullied by girls before directly replacing one of the girls she bullied and becoming the underboss for the cobra kai.
I see what you mean, it just didn't work good enough for me. Its quite some time since i saw it but the kids go way too suddenly from "not being bullied anymore" to full on "scumbag bullies + fighting dirty at the tournament!" Also the Drugs are bad and we now need relationsship problems arc was also pretty cringy.
The transformation from being bullied to fighting off the bullies was imho done very well, after that everything happened way too fast to be believable for me. And the actor that gets trained by Daniel really shouldn't act. I'm normally pretty much immune to bad acting, but this was ridiculously bad.
Lieutenant Columbo locks up another case. Our bumbling , fumbling , absent-minded detective with so many self proclaimed flaws... finally lays all his cards on the table... youtube entire episodes are now on youtube. great to see.

So not like watchmen at all?
Not like Watchman AT ALL.
Watched The Terror, very very good. After the series I wanted to do more research on the events. I really loved the foreshadow and inevitable transformation of the crew’s behavior. 9/10 Highly recommended.
If anyone knows another series or film similar to the story writing of this series please share.

I don't have another series to tell but I agree that TheTerror is pretty good. The acting is really nice.
I have started watching What we do in the shadows. I find it hilarious, its a comedy about an documentary covering a group of vampires and familiar in New York.

Banshee maybe only if you like, mostly over the top, brutal action.
And Boobs. Lots of Boobs
Just finished Lucifer season 4. Like all shows it is on a decline, but not nearly as much as most shows. Can recommend if you are looking for some lighthearted action comedy to binge on a rainy Sunday
I just got into How to get away with murder. Its not the most consistent show and the later seasons get confusing but its a lot like lost really as its fundamentally a mystery show but it handles it a lot better then lost did.
One of the best series i have seen in a long time and for sure the best superhero series i have seen, leagues above most Marvel-Netflix shows, let alone the Flash/Arrow/Legends/Supergirl cringefest.
This Series is going on on HBO and it's really good.
It really show how the situation was handle (so far.. i'm 2 episode in).
everyone that like history should watch this.
I actually only watched it because me gf wanted to see it as i don't like disaster show and movies. But this is an masterpiece of a series. It's like watching a horror movie with people puking blood from radiation. But the real horror is that something like this actually occurred. It also portrays a dysfunctional Soviet society and political system, but still shows the heroes and ordinary people within this society.
There should be 5 episodes in total, and currently 3 and soon 4 available.
The imdb rating is 9.7, and i would give it a 10 myself.

This makes me so happy. Its definitely the best show ever made. Nothing comes close in terms of writing imo. It only gets better for the next couple of seasons too.

I enjoyed it but it did seem a bit lacking in the nuance department. Some cartoonish artistic liberties were taken, such as the fictional old party man with the cane and his speech. The level of internal denial in general seemed overblown. Overall, my main criticism is how they handled filling in the gaps in the source material, in particular with the dialogues that they needed to invent. The cinematography itself was top notch, and the message being conveyed is valid.

Wow that's great to hear that they keep the quality up. Yeah I agree the writing is so good and the acting too. Don't know how they can manage such a huge cast of characters yet keep the story tight and have everyone feel like a real person.
Bloody brilliant. This here, ladies and gents is how you make a TV series. It's like The American Gods meets The Omen, meets Terry Pratchett. It's a truly wonderful and lighthearted journey through The End Times.
I was rather skeptical about this series after seeing the trailer but got hooked on it from the first episode. It's actually very funny while talking about some serious problems of the modern world. The acting is great, characters are great and the entire structure of it is fucking amazing. Every reveal and reinforcement has its payoff, there are no bland and boring "filler episodes" or anything like that, everything has a purpose and nothing drags out.
I don't know if it's the actors' or the director's work here but all the little tiny details kept wowing me. Take for instance a simple scene where angel and demon are walking together and while angel always follows the path the demon always cuts the corners a bit, stomping on the grass. Simple yet effective in reinforcing their character traits.

One thing I really love about The Wire is that it doesn't feel the need to hold your hand as the viewer. A huge pet peeve of mine is when writers are afraid you're too stupid to see how clever they are, like when someone says "pun intended."
I've watched The Wire many times, and I never noticed the connection between these two scenes from Season 1 until I saw it pointed out in YouTube comments: + Show Spoiler +
Just finished third season of The Wire man it just gets better and better... geez is it sad though. Has a lot of laugh out loud moments but overall its so fucking tragic.

While many viewers consider the fourth season to be the best one, I liked the third one the most.
Once you're done with The Wire I highly recommend watching "The Shield".
@Topic:
Dark, Season 2. I'm not done yet but so far I liked the first season better. I feel like season two is just "too much".
Jessica Jones season 3 was pretty good. Like the other 2 seasons, it's at least 2 episodes too long. Easily could have ended it up nicely at episode 10 without missing anything. A good last hurrah for the Netflix Marvel properties. Genuinely good acting all around from the cast (Carrie Ann Moss really delivers).

I thought it was much better than season 2 to be honest.
I watched 2 series so far this summer: Chernobyl and Cobra Kai (S2).
Chernobyl is a masterpiece in every aspect, if there ever was a perfect tv show, this is probably the one. 10/10
Cobra Kai surprised me a lot. I liked season 1 a lot and I thought that season 2 will suck, but it turned out better that season 1. This show successfully mixes complex characters/motivations with the cheesiness of the 80's. Billy Zabka who plays Johnny delivers such a good performance, I really did not expect this guy to be that good. 10/10
I finished Dark (both seasons) yesterday and I loved it. I dont think i've ever seen a show so cold and calculating, not sure how others experienced the show but I experienced it on a cerebral rather than an emotional level. I dont say that as a bad thing though.
What this show does best is make you believe that the world is real despite all the paradoxes from time travel and all the weird stuff. Im pretty sure it will become a benchmark for time travel stories for decades to come. It deserves all the praise that its getting imo, After Chernobyl, this is easily the next best thing on Netflix.
For anyone who never got into The Next Generation, I would highly recommend you watch the following episodes: The Inner Light The Measure of a Man All Good Things Tapestry
I'm halfway through The Boys now and all I can say is that it's a true successor to Watchmen, unlike this crap that HBO wants to throw at us.
Edit: Finished it and it was glorious, highly recommended. So fucking dark... They managed to capture the spirit of the source material but tamed it quite a lot (still it's probably the darkest superhero flick out there currently).
Also finished it, really enjoyable! Never seen any of the source material, but damn it's refreshing to see some ruthlessness after all the marvel movies
Homelander carries this series really hard. And DCEU should learn from this show how to make special effects for Superman - when homie is using his heat vision it's downright scary and you know instantly that's the guy you don't want to mess with.
It was obvious from the get go that the wife isn't dead. Kid was clear after learning she was pregnant. Dunno why, maybe to much GRRM, but I was sure that either Frenchie or Black guy would die. Well, Frenchie got hurt bad, so not all wrong Fallout and reunion between Starlight and Hughie.
Another Life - finished it in about 3 or 4 hours total because I was fast-forwarding through most of it. The show could be really good but instead of making it more compact and meaningful they filled it to the brim with irrelevant stuff. They want to add some depth to the characters through pointless conversations when some of those characters don't really need any more depth. The body horror is nice, the premise is interesting but the execution of it fell a bit short for me. 6/10
Honestly, so many of these shows, especially the made for Netflix ones, move soooo sloooowly. I really liked Daredevil/Luke Cage and Penny Dreadful, but stopped watching because they need to be 20% shorter.
I wish someone would make a good show out of Blindsight. It's such a revolutionary first contact sci-fi. Multiple personalities being an advantage instead of disorder, using vampirism for long distance space travel hibernation and vampire myth of fearing crosses being because their primal brains do not process right angles and simply shut down. Some amazing stuff right there. Won't spoil it for you, I really suggest you read the novel, it's brief and refreshing.
Just finished the Boys myself. I really enjoyed it! Give us season 2 asap! I was blown away that finally we got to see something that good, finally. In some moments tho it was the same stuff over and over again but I didnt mind at all. Like the way butcher was talking to Hughie to convince him to do stuff. 10/10 for me.
yeah, I did finish it too and it was pretty good but + Show Spoiler +
I don't like how it end because imo, there is no end. I know they want to have a season two and have something to show for it but dam at least give something to "finish" a season. Anyway, will still watch S2 when it will be available.
yeah, i was extremly confused and wondered if this was actually the final or if there are some more ep's coming very soon. This is not how you end a season, not at all.
I finished The Boys last weekend and boy was it good. I never planned to watch it thinking it will be too gory like the comic books which I read a few years ago, but most of my friends told me that it was toned down and so I gave it a go. Like most of you I didnt like the lack of season closure, but I can overlook that considering everything else was perfection. I just hope Kripke doesnt milk the story for more than 4-5 seasons.

I couldn't make it past episode 3 and like you I was fast forwarding through the drama parts and wanted to find out more about the aliens/crystal. Its a shame though, with a premise like that it could have been a great show, but its ultimately ruined by absurdly irrational characters.

I actually didn't mind it at all. I mean, even if there weren't any more seasons planned I'm not opposed to a relatively open endings in TV-shows/movies that leave a few questions in your brain.
Hell, I think that if this actually was an ending it would be perfectly fine. With how the show has been ending it like that would be very fitting. Showing how misguided some characters were and how futile some of their actions were too, to the point where they're so insignificant that it's not even worth wrapping up what happened to them. The ending is all about Homelander and I love it.
I am really enjoying The Boyz, does Hughie remind anyone else of ODPixel?
I have seen 1 episodes of Too Old too Die Young. To be honest i can't really tell if I like it or not. It's so different from anything else out there, its the director from Drive, so it's so focused on the style. There is a lot of non to little dialog in the series, with more the visual and music to give a feeling. Not that the story is hard to follow seems basic and straight forward until now.
I managed to go through the first season of The Flash. Wasn't so bad. What annoyed me the most about it was that all those supposedly super smart people constantly being idiots. And for the life of me I have absolutely no idea why when creating some nerdy shows with science and "smart" people in it the showrunners won't hire even a bit of help. In this show they're just spewing "sciency sounding" stuff from their mouths that makes completely no sense even if you have some very basic knowledge of physics and chemistry. The cake has to go to the scene where two "geniuses" are playing chess though... One says "check" and the other one responds with "check mate" which was wrong because 1. it's super unlikely to at the same time move to protect your king and check mate your opponent and 2. the move they showed wasn't even a "check mate". Details like that really piss me off sometimes.
I'm super excited for this. The movie was a huge deal for me in my childhood, but i wouldn't recommend it to kids these days because it looks and feels so dated. This could be perfect though
Dark is great but I think its not for all people. it is slow, you have to be really focused on whats going on and at one point you will eventually go "wtf is going on here" its too much to take but its a great series!
Speaking of great series, second season of Mindhunter finally landed on Netflix and I really enjoyed it. Had to constantly fight off the urge to read about those killers online but I think this would spoil it for me too much so I didn't in the end.

People will process the pacing differently. For me it was spot on. Right as I guessed who was who—the next scene would confirm/reveal it. They don’t spoon-feed u too much but also keep u guessing.
Like I said, it was a ride. I hope season 2 will stay on course.

Yeah Mindhunter is great.
Is it me or is the actor who plays Ford supposed to remind us of a realistic version of agent Dale Cooper?
On August 23 2019 07:06 GreenHorizons wrote: I liked The Boys. It's remarkably good allegory (I assume intentionally) imo.
For me it has two allegories main ones that is in most episodes and the some in specific episodes. But you can also watch it as pure entertainment. Really great show.
I really didn't like how they integrated Atlanta into taking over the season. It never made room for wendy and had her story just limp along. Then the ending to the season just seemed excessively vague and rushed somehow at the same time. just creating a ton of confusion for me on the exact ending, It just felt like the Manson interview scenes should have come at the end. I don't give a fuck about the historical reality they needed more kemper.
I watched the first two episodes of The Dark Crystal series and I fucking love it <3
Yeah its for kids, but its untypical for a kids show in the following ways:
- It has a complex, rich and most importantly original fantasy world - No orcs, no wizards, just aliens on an alien world
- It keeps the feeling of the movie. Its dark and cold at times, like REALLY dark for a kids show. I love this. Most kids stuff is so lame and one note, kids should have access to some kind of horror elements in their entertainment and the Dark Crystal fills this niche (many people who rewatch the movie having watched the original as a kid are surprised at how dark it is)
- The cast is amazing: Simon Pegg, Jason Isaacs, Mark Hamill, Helena Bonham Carter, Sigourney Weaver, Eddie Izzard, Natalie Dormer, Lena Headey, Andy Samberg
- Its scope is absolutely huge. Loads of characters, no mercy in terms of explaining stuff to you - you get 3 minutes of intro and then you're on your own in a very, very complex world. (for a kids show anyway)
- Oh and it looks amazing!
If you can handle watching puppets, you should watch it.
From the reaction I've seen online, it is definitely more popular among people who watched the original as kids. I suppose alot of people don't really want to watch a puppet show, which is fair enough i suppose. It gets 8.7 on imdb which is pretty good for this kind of thing.

Oh god, it is not for kids. It is for 12 and older here in germany, as a puppet show! I got nightmares from some of the darker episodes.
The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance
I was not familiar with the 1982 movie, still am not. The cinematography is good. Not average, not great, just good, which is a let down if you think about it. They had to create everything of every scene from complete scratch. If you want to bake an apple pie from scratch, you first have to invent the universe. Well they did and for the shots and scenes to only be good was disappointing. It is an incredibly rich world, with multiple alien races, and those races have within them different cultures! The story is meh, the writing at least rarely goes into exposition dumps thanks to the medium of visual story telling I guess. Overall 44/100 and skip, however, if you care for whimsical characters add +10 and if you value originality add +20, so for me it is:
74/100
Another Life
I actually finished this without fast forwarding. I didn't find the characters terribly more unreasonable than your average fictional characters. The actors are average looking, which is weird in television and it does make it harder to care for them. I think almost every episode has a different writer and the series happily goes from one sci-fi cliche to the next. As expected with sci-fi, every hint at something bigger makes me, the viewer, long for something bigger and this series boldly goes there.
76/100
Minderhunter: Season 2 Not as good as Season 1, because they knew they get a third season and so the end is just way too little like an actual ending. I also agree: Less Atlanta, More Kemper! However, Season 1 was fantastic and Season 2 is still great television! Ps: Never realised what a beefcake Holt McCallany is (actor in picture).
A human detective and a fairy rekindle a dangerous affair in a Victorian fantasy world, where the city's uneasy peace collapses when a string of murders reveals an unimaginable monster.
Holy cow! First The Boys and now this?! Bright done right.
Pretty much everything about this show is amazing. The sets, actors, atmosphere, plot, characters... Writing is top notch, dialogue is amazing and it all works so well together. This show is nothing short of stellar.
10/10
It looks like Amazon is really stepping up its game and is now producing shows to rival HBO.
Oshin - This is one of the best shows I've ever watched. It follows a young girl living in poverty throughout her whole life to a successful supermarket owner. There's such a huge number of people she meets along the way and they're all so interesting, well acted and sincere. Been watching it since early this year, going to be sad when it's over.
Six Feet Under - After I finished The Wire I thought I'd check out other old HBO series and heard good things about this. Watched about six episodes but don't think I'll continue. Despite some sharp and funny writing, the people in it just creep me out too much. Everyone is so emotionally stunted it seems like. Reminds me too much of my extended family.
Neon Genesis Evangelion - Think I would have LOVED this show during horny emo teenage years. Really captures the feel of being a depressed teenager and has good amount of gratuitous fan service. Not getting much out of it though, no real interest to find out what happens next. It's visually gorgeous and I like how it dwells slowly on scenes rather than having tons of quick cuts like you see nowadays.
Watching the Sopranos now and enjoying it quite a bit.
I just watched the whole season 1: I have to say it got me intrigued and I quite liked it. There are some aspects that do not convince me completely, the family and political intrigues I think are a bit far fetched and not so plausible, but if you suspend some of the logical critic to some moves, it's an enjoyable story. I found the world building quite convincing and the characters well rounded. I do think some of the actors are not the best, especially with the natural comparison with Game of Thrones (I don't want to compare the two series, which are at the end different in scope, but just the acting of some of the main characters... with actors like sean bean, lena headey, peter dinklage and conleth hill it's really hard to have a fair fight ) To be honest at the beginning I was a bit skeptical of Cara Delevigne and Orlando Bloom, though at the end I think they work out well for the story.. on the other end the scenes with sophie and jonah feel all a bit over-acted and too dramatic..)
So I started watching this series the other day...
and was surprised to see it not even mentioned here.
Now, you might think that life in a small agricultural Canadian town of 5000 people is nothing but chorin' and church, but youd's be wrong. These salt of the Earth folk tackle serious and salient issues with wit and wisdom every day, and they're also never shy of getting into a scrap. Sure, you might hear some rumours of ostrich fucking (ALLEGEDLY!) or promiscuous relations, though to be fair (to be fair, to be Fair...) haven't we all done some degen thing in our lives?
I wasnt paying much attention to The Walking Dead lately. Meaning ive been watching the episodes and they were all meh. But currently last episode put a smile on my face. starting to really like the show again. anyone not watching should start watching.
Just finished season 2. Much better than previous season and I was really impressed by the action scenes. Even some bigger budget full length movies don't get action sequences this good.

Huh, maybe I give it a look. I am just worried it is too "American" for my taste.
I'm really surprised as I thought season 2 of jack ryan was much worse than season 1. There was no real suspense for me, Jack really wasn't interesting to be and didn't really do anything to make him stand out then just another joe.
the twists were super duper lame and didn't make any sense, fight me irl if you think geer being dead and buried there wasn't the right move and the twist you thought you saw, the fact that the former interior minister was at the prison camp was so predictable and the fact that it wasn't about nuclear weapons but mining rare earth metals was just poorly executed, Would it have really killed them to make the local spy chief know about the mining deal but not that the senator was being assassinated for discovering it truly believing that it was part of the bigger plan to do yet another coup in South America to deliver this time a popular democratic leader who magically finds yet another resource miracle in her country? That last conversation was Justice league "just save one" levels of a missed opportunity for a frustratingly shitty predictable outcome. A powerful scene of Jack not knowing what to do with his recorder while the senator delivers bangers of lines like "you think Martinez didn't know? The whole thing was his idea. One last coup for his country that had suffered so many. We were going to deliver Venezuela the leader they legitimately elected and a new Massive source of income, Those mercs took the cash to desert their post and follow you pretty fast didn't they? That guy in charge of the "special projects group" didn't even try to find out what was in another container did he? A whole boat with tens of millions of equipment and you run into the one guy in charge of the entire thing and are saved by a german agent that just happened to be on the boat as well." fill in the rest with references from the books.
The villain in season one was extremely competent and smart. The villain in season two was just another dictator.
and Jesus I was rolling my eyes so hard at the end when they just looked at each other and were like "we're going to take the presidential palace in Blackhawks without a scratch. The way they just exited the embassy when it fell was also super lame and was predictable that they would be betrayed.

I didn't really expect any tense suspense or cleverness in it to be honest. I viewed it more as a spy/action movie in the line of JB and MI. On that front it delivers.

Real. fantastic meshing of practical and CGI effects with a lot of understatement. You might be a bit lost at times if you've never seen or heard of star wars before but I also suspect that even those people would enjoy the basic good sci fi parts of it.
A disappointment is that the old Simpsons seasons are all apparently cut into widescreen so parts of the video is cut off on top and bottom of the screen.
I have to say, I wasn't really impressed with the first episode of The Mandalorian. Yes, the visuals were great, the settings, costumes, camera work, all done very well (though this was to be expected, it's Disney after all), but the story left me feeling kinda...meh. The script for "Chapter One" seemed to be focused heavily on nostalgia, which I don't mind that much, though hopefully they can move away a bit in the next episodes. Having a handful of recognizable actors in these 40 short minutes also didn't help. And what was the point of that riding scene?
Will continue watching for a while, though I'm not sure for how long.
What about The Morning Show? Anyone following that? It's got a pretty nice cast.
It seems that contrary to popular belief Disney can actually make Star Wars
Not everyone at Disney can, but Dave Filoni can. He's the main dude behind the Clone Wars series and the Star Wars Rebels show. He's a veteran of the George Lucas days.
Those series aren't perfect by any means, but they are quality lore expansions filled with tons of great moments and characters.
The Mandalorian has Filoni at the helm. It was always going to be better than the trash that is the sequel trilogy. The only question is, how good? And more importantly, if successful, what does Dave do next?
Mandalorian, probably, deserves it's own topic, at least I expect it to be, it looks good. Love such smart mix of practical effects and cgi, and combined it looks great!
The Mandalorian has a lot of people involved from a lot of star wars television. People were right to bash rebels first season but they got better over time and the clone wars had some of the best episodes in animation in those years, not to mention they have "the greater man of Hollywood" John "I have caused more losses in Hollywood by people trying to replicate me then Bernie Madoff at this point" Favreau making sure they have the support of the marvel/star wars effects machine while not fucking with the vision.
There are two majors flaws : star wars is now retrofuturism and the story was non existent. The rest was good (although too gloomy) but it's not enough imo.

What do you mean the story was non-existent? The show is called the Mandalorian and it followed the Mandalorian as he did bounty hunting and Mandalorian related activities.
Just watched the two first episodes of The Mandalorian and I'm very disapponted. Completely unengaging and uninspired characters and "story". 30 min long episodes with nothing but honestly quite bad action scenes. I'll have to keep watching since they involved such a major aspect of the saga but I find myself not longing for the next episode which is bad. I should.

Major aspect of the saga? None of the characters involved are anywhere near another part of the cannon star wars universe nor have they said that anything in the show is going to be involved in the movie coming up. The first episode was 40 minutes and started with a great bar scene. I can get that the lower stakes story isn't your flavor but I don't get how you didn't like warner herzogs character implications or the fight at the end of the second episode.
I saw Jojo rabbit today. Jesus that movie was completely dedicated. So much nazi imagery and tiki watiki really did go full hitler. Its not for someone easily offended but I think it was a great story with actors that were legitimately good and well written.
Also it had an incredible collection of End war era military equipment and uniforms. Jeeps had turrets BAR's were held and carried around StG 44's were fireing, I saw a wolverine Panzerfausts and panzerschrecks. I saw late war Shermans and all the opel blitz, motorcycles were accurate and each country actually had different and correct ones.
It was shot in the Check republic so I guess they had these things lying around but it was still clear that people cared a lot about the film. Against Huge warning for people who are deeply uncomfortable with nazi imagry and "funny" nazies.

Guess that remains to be seen but I would be suprised if someone isn't related or connected to someone major. I don't mind lower stake stories at all, quite the contrary, but it has to be replaced with something else like interesting characters or dialogues or something. I give you that first episode had some good scenes but the second one was a 30 minutes World of Warcraft quest.

A bounty hunter bounty hunting is not a story. The story may be focused on very different stuff, like the world is the main protagonist in LotR, inner feelings when people are just doing normal stuff or simply the plot. We have none of that in the Mandalorian, literally faceless hero, old sci-fi universe with nothing new to be excited about and the action scenes feel disconnected and don't make the story progress. The packaging is nice but it feels empty.
I also find the Mandalorian pretty boring. When I watch it I think yeah nice sets, nice props, that's it. Not much to care about and almost no acting thanks to all those masks with the small exception of Herzog.
They are extremely true to the Star Wars universe with its sounds, looks, physics etc so I guess it is nice for fans. But it kinda feels like one of those well done fan made films, just stretched out.
I like the simplicity and sparseness of the storytelling in The Mandalorian, but I can see how it can turn off some viewers. The show kinda feels like a video game, and I genuinely wish for a game like that.
Before watching Final Space season 2 I watched season 1 again. Two chapters in of the new season and got bored: new characters are uninspiring and the script went full dragon ball collecting stuff to summon Shenlong. I´ll leave it for now.
Also watched Chernobyl for the first time. What a masterpiece. There are also a series of podcasts on youtube with the producer Craig Mazin, totally recomended and almost as good as the series. I can´t overstate how good Chernobyl is.
Just finished Unbelievable. It's pretty much True Detective: Feminist Edition. The wokeness in it wasn't all that bad apart from maybe 2 or 3 cringy scenes (and they're all closer to the end) and it's worth watching regardless if you like slow burn crime series like that.

I like it too, Star Wars it's a scy-fi show with a simple plot (good vs evil) and lots of special effects. Not Game of Thrones or god forbid, some sort of political pandering.
I wish I could get into His Dark materials, but I just cant. Last episode was without Mrs Coulter which is apparently the only character interesting to me so I could barely get through it. It is not the fault of the series per se, it is really well done. Just the good guys are all so uninteresting and the literal deus ex machina the main character carries with her makes everything so much more boring. Maybe I am just too old for this kind of stories.

I agree with you Redox. I rarely talk about it because it appears to be a 'sacred text' in fantasy circles, but I find it incredibly lame and boring.
The Expanse new season is about to drop! A few years ago I tried to watch the 1st season and I couldn't get past the first 3-4 episodes: this year I re-tried and I binged the whole series to the end, incredibly entertaining and super cool characters and settings.. so I'm quite hyped for the new season (tbh I'm more hyped for the Expanse than for the new Star Wars, which for me is quite strange )
Up until episode 5 of the first season, it's like setting the scene for all the cool stuff to explode onto you. It's quite slow and tame (even though plenty happens). I hear the same thing from different people and was the same myself. After the confrontation on the Mars cruiser, the show just sucks you in.

To me the Expanse is amazing but is getting cornier and cheesier as time goes on. Still good though, but some of the last series was unbelievably cringey, as if they were trying to Marvel it up a bit.

I must admit something pretty stupid: the first time I watched it it was w/o subtitles (as usual for series in english) and I really struggled to get Naomi's accent Second time with subtitles (at the beginning at least, to get used to it) was much better
I absolutely loved the first season of The Expanse when everything was still a mystery. It's still good and I'm really pumped for the new season but some of the magic is, for me, gone. There are still much unknown but last few seasons has been sooo far out that nothing really surprises me anymore. This is a common phenomenon in movies/series and The Expanse has done better than most to keep me on the edge of my seat.
Also just watched first five episodes of Watchmen. Really really cool. It beautiful and with the same brutal and twisted humour as the movie. My only worry is if they'll manage to tie it together at the end but considering how competently everything so far has been done I have good hopes that they will.
I don't feel like it's "so far out", I actually think that the Protomolecule behaves quite like the way it would irl, I mean, the scenario seems plausible to me at least. I didn't like the secret science arc with the experiments on the children, but I guess that the evil scientist guys had a lot more knowledge about the protomolecule to begin with, it's what set the entire story in motion to begin with.
I read this season is the worst of the 4 so I constantly waited for it to become bad, but somehow that never happened. I preferred it over season 1 tbh.
The characters are really good in this, even if some are over the top. I also really like stories with an unreliable narrator, so that helped.
Now looking forward to s3 and s4, which are supposedly even better.
Season 3 is really good imo. Season 4 is also pretty good, expect last episode which was useless but hey, all the rest was good !
On another note, maybe is should be in the "anime" section but I just started to watch Death Note and dam it's fucking good ! I wasn't expecting this series to be this good. Really like how L. and Light play the game.

Season 1 was more about the visuals and the atmosphere than the story for me (the story was still good) so you'll hopefully still enjoy the way it is portrayed.
Honestly, season 1 was my favorite for the Expanse. I think I am more of a realistic sci-fi person, though, and there's a steady slide towards throwing that out the window in later seasons without even an attempt to hand-wave it (maybe the books do a better job with that). The crew's story arcs also feel like they've been trapped in a groundhog day loop of the same story beats over and over.
Hoping season 4 can at least change the latter (it's very clear it won't change the former). I am not sure I can survive another 10 episodes of wanting to strangle Holden whenever his face is on screen. All my favorite characters are the ones who literally or figuratively evaporate into thin air for the next season...and Amos.
I tried watching like 4 episodes of the Expanse but I didn't like any of the characters enough to keep watching. Maybe will give it another try later...
The thing is with the Expanse, I started out not liking any character when they were introduced (except for Drummer maybe). They just grow on you because of their surprising depth you just get caught off guard by. Like, Holden seems extremely generic, but he's a bit deeper than that. His acting is definitely the weak point though, if I remember correctly.
Season 4 of The Expanse is legit. Amazon budget is definitely showing too, with some high-grade actors being introduced in supporting roles and we get to see more scenes in space, which is always welcome.
I binged up to e09, and it’s been a pretty strong season, especially considering the source novel is regarded as the worst in the series — it’s quite seperated from the overall story but still necessary.
My only complaints are the casting / character change with Arjun. He did not act like he did in previous seasons, and had a tremendous amount of screen time. Was very jarring.
On the positive side, the bigger budget was put to good use. The sets and effects are awesome, and when the story gets rolling, it does what the expanse has always done.

I read all the books and just finished season 4 yesterday. The Series does some things different then the books that i really like.
Series > Books 1. The whole gender equality theme dominates the books in a manner that does provide rather little depth to it´s charakters and is in just its volume over abundant. I´m glad they decided to cut down on that. + Show Spoiler +
pa family anyone? who cares ...
2. The visual action is just top notch and a credit to the medium that is film 3. The story has been packed up to fit into the given screen time in a manner that paces it quite a lot faster and gives it more of an action vibe rather then the careful political drama scheming that is happening in the books and it works out for the series well
Books > Series 1. Depth; Charakter entanglements such as+ Show Spoiler +
Naomi having a son with the worlds most notorious terrorist that happens to throw a bunch of rocks on earth lacks foreshadowing in the series. Bobby being total badass in the books turned softy crybaby that can´t form a coherent sentence at her hearing and gets blackmailed into petty thievery in season 4 doesn´t work. And there s more to be had in this department
well it was a decent read and a really good watch if i had to sum it up

i think steven strait works out well as holden. The books depict him of somewhat as an idealistic juvenile prick that does impulsive shit and is generally rather stupid but grows more into his role as captain over time. So him not really being likeable in the first couple seasons has something to do with charakter development which is pretty good acting imho.
Yeah to be fair the character is at least as annoying in the books as he is n the show. :D
Although I also feel his acting is really weak. Same with Bobby and Avasarala. Naomi I like better now, but shes not great either. Amos was perfect casting though, and Gorman has been great obviously.

What's your gripe with avasarala? if you can be fucked being more specific than weak acting that is
Well I realize these things are always a matter of opinion and also hard to put into words. With Avasarala among other things I cant take her rants seriously. There is no conviction behind it, sometimes it seems like she barely gets the words out. Its a good character and she looks the part, should be an easy win.
Steven Strait as holden was hands down the worst acting-wise for the first 2 seasons. I think he turned a corner in season 3 (second half) though, and he is solid now.
Avasarala -- she overacts and plays a larger-than-life attitude, so her scenes kind of depend on the other actors being able to make it work. It didn't work this season.
naomi gets a lot of flack, too. I'm indifferent -- she'll have some good material to work with next season so, we'll see.
everyone else is awesome, i think. no complains from me.
Just watched the first episode and it's pretty much Golden Compass the TV show. Having seen the movie before will probably make the experience of watching it much more dull as I know who the bad guys are and what some of the big plot reveals might be.
If anyone has watched both, can you tell me if by continuing I'm headed for a disappointment or not?
Also, started Witcher. First episode is very strong, although might be a tad confusing but that's to be expected considering the source material. It's like GoT on steroids with all the moral ambiguity and dark, realistic feel to it.
10/10
It looks like Amazon is really stepping up its game and is now producing shows to rival HBO.
thanks for posting the suggestion. I enjoyed the first episode.
Too much sex and naked breasts for my taste but apart from that thoroughly enjoyable.
Which to be honest feels like a weird thing to say after watching a depiction of s through and through racist society
Binge watched Watchmen on HBO. It felt very solid, a 9/10 overall with some episodes being 10/10.
I don't completely agree with their depictions of some characters from the original graphic novel, specifically Ozymandius and Dr. Manhattan. The show versions felt kinda off compared to their graphic novel personalities and arcs.
Otherwise, the rest of the show was fantastic, and sometimes very weird. I thought it could get very thought-provoking with its interpretation of racial tensions in America or the psyche of masked vigilantes.
Finally finished The Sopranos. Boy it gets emotionally taxing at the end. Dark and tragic but still compelling to watch. Started Downton Abbey and The Witcher. Liking the former a lot better so far.
Watched Miss mavel on amazon prime today with my moms and my sister. Its a really good show and season 3 might have been the strongest but they're all well made and have good stories. They're also something you can watch with your family as an adult.

Although I'm sure discussing why you think this is would be very riveting, this is probably not the thread for it. Yes, the latter.
Season 3 of Babylon Berlin will be out late January! The first two seasons, which were actually just one long season, were really good, much recommended for those who haven't seen it.
By the gods! What an amazing journey this was. During the last 5 minutes of the last episode I was crying like a baby and when my wife asked me why I got so agitated and I started telling her my voice actually faltered and I started crying again. I really don't remember when was the last time any movie or TV show has elicited so much emotion out of me. It was the perfect ending. And I have to give mad props to Maggie Gyllenhaal and James Franco for creating such a brave show (especially Maggie, whose role was also pretty brave).
I agree, The Deuce is a top quality show and has so many intelligent things to say about class, work, gender, and the city. David Simon remains the greatest show writer out there.
First episode of Star Trek: Picard was very promising. It seems to have a greater respect for the franchise compared to Discovery. Patrick Stewart still commands a sense of gravitas to his performance.

Agreed, very nice start to the series, and I liked how there were a ton of connections to the previous shows/movies.

It seems that this show won't receive a warm welcome from the Star Trek fans...
Made me laugh pretty hard (I'm kinda like Jay in this review).
Just gave Six Feet Under another try and finished the first season. It's really good actually, the characters grow on you as you see other sides of them.
So, I've somehow missed out on 2 whole seasons of this show. Absolutely loved the first season. In second season they turned the sick shit dial all the way over to 11 but it actually benefits the show rather than detracting from it. It's everything that Hannibal wanted to be but couldn't quite make it. Right now I think this is the best show to tackle madness and paranormal stuff balanced out by scientific approach (where they actually employ the scientific method). The best thing about it are the characters though. They feel real and you're genuinely interested in them.
Good story, great characters, gripping and intense. I love this show. On to season 3 now
Just got finished with The Stranger and Locke and Key.
Its nice to see the Killjoys crew getting straight back on it!
The Stranger:
This was OK. I'll admit I was hooked but having binged it I don't think it'll stick in the memory for very long. Its a BBC type thriller with a fairly good central mystery. The acting is good and its competently made and written but nothing more than that really. Good if you want to binge something and then forget about it. Its not art. 5/10
Locke and Key:
I thought this was really lame when it started, but it grew on me alot. Its a teen drama/haunted house fantasy show with some pretty good characters. Its like its really good in some ways and really bad in others (the whole 'parents don't remember magic' is a lazy idea imo). The comparisons to Stranger Things are way off. 6.5/10
Really great and intriguing show. The first time I saw the premise for it I didn't really give it a chance and now that I have it resulted in me binging the entire first season and forging on through second. AAA production value, cool characters and nice plot. Another thing worth mentioning is the choice of music, where you not only get awesome pieces but they're also carefully chosen to really fit what's going on the screen at the time. It's also really nice from the technical standpoint, where even a simple scene of just 2 characters talking is taking place in 2 different locations at the same time and they're switching seamlessly between them (super cool effect).
Just a note of warning if you haven't seen it already. This show is the wokest of them all (including gratuitous scenes of gay sex too) but unlike in the other "woke" shows it actually works really well for this one and fits into the universe that is established for it.
The only negative thing I have to say about this show is that some scenes simply drag on a bit too long for my taste. There's a lot of talking about emotions and such and some of it just isn't my cup of tea so I ended up fast-forwarding a few scenes.

My gripe was really small and personal. Can't judge the show on that since it was a very minor drawback for me and could be a huge draw for others. I would deduct points if this was a flaw that happened often or was particularly egregious. 2-3 conversations being a tad too long for my taste over the course of 12 episodes isn't something warranting a point deduction in my book and I've enjoyed the show so much that giving it anything else than 10/10 would be a disservice to it and would not reflect the amount of fun and entertainment it has provided me.
Edit:
Just wanted to add that the camera work, framing, the use of color etc. are so fucking good in this one. It really puts most Hollywood movies to shame and I keep getting totally entranced by some of the shots. I totally agree with those awards it got: Outstanding Color Grading – Television Outstanding Locations in a Contemporary Television Series Outstanding Cinematography for a Single-Camera Series (One Hour)

I agree with this, but for some reason the series just didn't grab me. I stopped watching about 2/3 into season 1 and never really felt the need to pick it up again.
I think I found it too Wachowski-ish. You know like sincere and then some, with very little self awareness (in terms of script) and it turned me off. I've also seen Cloud Atlas a bunch of times and this explores very similar ideas in a very similar way but far less subtle.

Bae Doona kicks ass though.
Hahaha. Funnily enough I've really enjoyed this one but couldn't get through Cloud Atlas
Was quite impressed by this Korean series, which includes elements of thriller, action and comedy. Captivating plot about a mysterious illness that threatens to spread over the kingdom. Full of shocks and surprises. Great cinematography. Each season has 6 episodes, 2nd season aired last week. Would recommend to anyone who seeks quality entertainment. Check out the trailer for season 1 on YouTube.
9/10
On to Better Call Saul season 5 and Cobra Kai Season 3 after that, I hope.
10/10, would recommend.
Watched this thanks to home office.. I really enjoyed it. Now i am not so full of praise like the quote but.. it was funny, it was kinda short and at most one episode too long . Recommend 9/10 for everyone that is at home and has to watch everything thanks to corona 8/10 else.
Also watched the Mandalorian. I fucking loved it. I'm so done with starwars, i didn't watch the new movie in cinema and not at all... But this? This is kinda italo western. I love italo western. It's also kinda a-teanm, mc gyver... i love a-team and mcgyver. This is seriously revolutionariy... You can binge it and get some "greater connection" or you can just watch single episodes and see the mandalorian doing awesome shit. its awesome. If your a person that does not like italo western.. well, your most likely a bad person anyway.
Sense8 is great if you can deal with it that it's basically propaganda. (I don't mind that, because I concur with most of the ideas expressed in the series.)
I can't force myself to continue watching ST Picard. The first episode was okay, but I'm a huge TNG fan, so I'm kind of afraid that my childhood hero will end up doing dumb stuff.
Finished watching Devs. Determinism is one of those subjects, like time travel (looking at you Dark), that tv series can never quite deal with without digging themselves into a hole. Without spoiling it too much, Devs falls into a very similar trap as the most recent episode of Westworld but handles it a little more elegantly.
Mixed feelings about the lead actress, I kinda like her minimalist approach but she went a bit too much in the cardboard direction.
Overall I do recommend it, but don't expect it to make you ponder on the great questions, it's more of a measured thriller.
I recently started watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer, seen an episode here and there when it aired but never seen all of them. Just got up to season 4 episode 10 (Hush) and am stuck with a smile on my face. That felt like a season finale episode in how everything just got together and ties back into previous episodes. Wanted to gush a bit about the episode. Laughed out loud multiple times, while the episode had a lot of plot progression. Think it might be exhausting if all episodes were this fast paced but I think I could handle it.
Overall the series is decent. Most episodes are entertaining to watch with a few duds here and there. Well above average series, though the opening of episodes becomes a bit formalistic when watching an episode a day instead of per week. Been watching the DVD version since the Blu-Ray is said to be missing the CGI or layering in a lot of places.
Considering how old the series is the CGI is surprisingly good. Of course it is nowhere near current standards but for a series that ran two seasons per year around year 2000 it works with only a few spots really showing low quality due to what was possible with a small CGI team pumping out stuff. The extra episode where they tried to explain a bit about how they did the CGI was a blast to the past.

The series doesn't fare well after 2-3 episodes in a row. The beginning with the random vampire kill kind of gets repetitive as an example.

Nahh, I used to watch Buffy to learn english, so I rewatched it until I memorized every actors lines in two different languages. The later seasons, especially season 5 and onward are my favourites. It's been a decade, I don't think there is anyway it holds up as well as it aged in my memory!

I'm back to watching Lucifer. Previously stopped midway through season 3 for some reason that I don't remember. One of the very few shows that actually makes me laugh out loud with its ridiculous humor.
Such a great show overall. If you like some lighthearted entertainment that can elicit at least a chuckle or two from you each episode this is the one for you.
Got up to S06E07 (Once More, with Feeling) by now in Buffy. Can see why people say it is the best episode in the series. Of course the singing isn't perfect but it is true to the characters. If they could suddenly sing with the best of them it would likely be much worse than this was. Though it surprised me how bad + Show Spoiler +
Michelle Trachtenberg (Dawn)
was, thought she would be a better singer than that (could also be me not knowing anything about music).
Only found a short 2 minute stretch a bit dull in the 50 min episode. Had me laughing multiple times, smiling for most of it and brought me close to tears at another point. Went out of the episode thinking, I have to see this again at some point. First time it happened in the series for me.
Don't think the episode would hold up well as a stand alone episode for somebody that hasn't seen the last few episodes prior to it of Buffy. It is a heavy plot episode where not knowing who people are and why they are having the reveals they are having would detract a lot from it.
On another note, it is strange how much my opinion differs with the average viewers for season 5. Where people consider The Body a masterwork and I didn't really connect to it. Probably lacking the pre-requisite experiences or something. Or Fool for Love which is very highly rated and was a good though not spectacular episode in my eyes.
Guess I'll finish the series up over the next few weeks, a bit sad when I know all the best episodes have passed. Still looking forward to more and perhaps I will like some episodes that were not as liked in general. Happened to others in the series with for example Spiral that I quite enjoyed. A big shift from the normal series that was very interesting to me, though looking at it logically it isn't very well put together. That entire order is a bit too out there, which is part of what makes them great.
Edit. Still a bit happy/hyped from the episode 30 minutes later. Not often movies or series cause that. Usually only get it from books.
Not sure if it was already mentionned here but I just watch the first two season of DARK on netflix and it's really good. I like how everything was done and how everything is tie together. 8.5/10
This was also great. Real event that append in 1993. 9/10

Actually one of my favourite episodes gets overlooked, because it comes right after "Once More, with Feeling". And it does not do much plotwise "Tabula Rasa". Tabula Rasa was pretty fun, a good episode for sure. Havn't gotten to those two episodes yet. Downside with looking up episode names is that the summary is next to them so I semi spoil myself. I should probably have found a list with just names instead of the IMDB one.

Yeah Rebels grew on me at the end, I wasnt a fan at start but as soon as they made it a bit more serious and introduced Rex and Ahsoka, it went only up from there. I actually want to know what happens to Ezra now.

With Filoni at the helm, yeah there's deffo hope. His work on Clone Wars, Rebels (the last few seasons) and The Mandalorian are some of the best Star Wars I've seen. Hoping that he'll be used in some sort of capacity for future movies as well.

You might miss on some story. If I remember correctly earlier seasons tend to be more of a series of mostly unrelated mini-events but some are pretty important for the future episodes.
I watched it all, some of the earlier episodes definitely were not on the same level as later ones but it's still watchable even if a bit silly at times (at least they're short).
Yeah the problem is that most of the series is rather cheesy or silly, but in the end it does provide most of the gravitas of the four part series finale. So I can do nothing but conclude that most of the series is not worth the investment but it does seriously detract from the emotional impact of the final 100 to 80 min of the series. With the series starting with a 3 year old super lame happy cakes lighthearted Ahsoka and then watching her journey all the way up to the end is rather stirring in hindsight. Quite the buildup to a rather unexpected finale, especially with regards to quality, in script, voiceacting, music score and pure penache compared to the movies.
All in my opinion ofcourse, but seeing as I was totally done with the universe years ago, even before the biggest disasters, this stirred my 11 year old heart from when I first watched the original trillogy and for that I am grateful. I watch alot of movies and series, truly alot, and to stumble into something like this four-parter without any expectations or even negative ones, which really drew me in and pulled on my childhood strings was kind of a treat.
The Kenobi vs Maul lightsaber battle in season 3 is amazing. Even though its short, so much happens with expressions and stances.
If you like Star Wars and you never watched the animated stuff, this is highly recommended. Maybe grab an episode guide off reddit and just watch the main story ones in season 1.
Dark season 3 was pretty dang good. I only had a few minor things that nagged at me, but I can see why they all happened the way they did. Random spoiler-rich annoyances below.
The CGI tunnel was pretty blech, and I can't believe there was like 4.5 minutes of it. The "Jonas/Adam is literally unkillable" schtick was a bit much for my tastes. It's a bummer we don't get to see Jonas/alt-Martha's son vanish, because it would be the first new and surprising thing of his whole life. And it would have been nice for there to be some reason/causality to the fact that these two realities were created by Tannhaus' original time machine.
But acting, general story structure, wrapping up almost everything satisfactorily...this is pretty much everything you need from a series finale.

Oh I got to watch this. I even managed to avoid the temptation to click on spoilers. The two first seasons were among the best bits of television I've seen recently and + Show Spoiler +
one of the best take of time travel I have seen in fiction (let's face it most attempt to deal with that topic are really dumb).
Everything is mirrored in the mirror world (except text)-I believe they literally mirrored the film, actually, and had the text written backwards-and when people/things from the mirror world travel to the main world, they "un-mirror." So Marta's scar flips sides, as does which side the man's cleft lip is on. This can help you instantly spot whether the cleft-lipped man is killing someone in Jonas or Marta's world. This also saved them a fortune on building a mirrored version of the entire set.
I saw Mystic Quest on AppleTV. Pretty solid comedy. Also really enjoyed the second season of Harley Quinn. Hoping it gets picked up for s3 soon because it was fantastic.
i binged watched season 4 of Columbo. The bumbling , fumbling , absent minded , affable italian never shows his cards ... until he has already won the game...
I find the state of technology in the early 70s, just before the Atari 2600's release, to be fascinating. I watched the first season of "Emergency". Meh... not bad.
Saw What we do in the shadows. first rewatched season 1 then 2. Really my favorit comedy series atm. Episode 4 was the highlight of the season for me. What makes this so great for me is that the vampires are so out of touch with reality and how modern life work that it kind of show off the strange sides of modern man and still takes a piss of vampires in general.

If you'd like to see an amazing movie that is similar in tone but utterly serious (ie: not a comedy) you should watch Only Lovers Left Alive (which also plays into some of the scenes in WWDITS season 2). Highly recommended.

I take this back.. I'm down to the last three episodes now and I gotta say it's a deeply beautiful and moving series.
I've just watched Amazon's Beat. It's a pretty cool crime thriller. Really enjoyable. The only thing that didn't work for me was that some of the setups didn't have payoffs and some side characters were simply discarded (and I wanted to know what happened to them). I really liked the main villain though.
I'm watching the 3% atm... and well.. Its cheap fun but, holy shit, american voice actors are like... 40 years behind their counterparts in other languages? It seriousy hurts. It's not "kinda bad" it's just "wrong".
German dubbing is not perfect but boy.... Is it GOOOD

Yeah man its REAL. Love it.
Fully expected cheesy nostalgia and hallmark channel style production and was pleasantly surprised. Then I wondered if it was just that my expectations were so low and it stood up to more critical viewing.
I don't want to spoil anything but so much in there I find discussion worthy.

I binged Cobra Kai in 2 days and it was freaking awesome!
Also, Ive just watched Raised by Wolves the one directed by Ridley Scott, if you like movies like Aliens,Prometheus etc give it a try. I really liked the first episodes.
If anyone ever wanted a real explanation of Twin Peaks, what its really about, this youtube video is actually amazing. I guarantee you never thought about it like this, and it makes absolutely everything make sense.

The third (new) season is way more hardcore than the original. It's Lynch Unleashed. Very unsettling and scary at times, but still with a lot of humour.
For me the new Twin Peaks is the best TV show ever, closely followed by The Wire.

Yeah I agree. Its awesome. Completely different show to the early ones though.
I loved the old twin peaks. With the weirdness in the little town. What made it speciel for me was the people in the Twin Peaks clearly overacted but made me liked them because of that. Rather unique in that. So had been looking forward to the thrid season for a long time. To be honest it's so different and for me out of tourch with the the original show. To be honest i hated it, even if judged on it's own. Weird for the sake of being Weird. Didn't like a single person in the show.
Just finished watching Cobra Kai. Now that is a guilty pleasure I can get behind. The story is just so out there and completely ridciculous, but still enjoyable. And then there are some very cool and serious elements in there + Show Spoiler +
like when Miguel is getting punished for showing merci. Daniel and Johnny trying to do a good thing and then everything falls to pieces
. Don't really know where they will take it with season 3, but I'll probably watching.
Only realized a few episodes in that they used the original cast. Seriously, such a cool idea. I cannot give a rating, such a silly but enjoyable show.
I just finished rewatching Buffy. Overall its an 8/10 but the best episodes are up there with the best tv ever made. Season 1 and 2 are a bit lame by today's standards but it really picks up after that. I know alot of people disliked season 4 but for me that was where Whedon really started innovating with format and stuff so you have to factor in the chance of some episodes falling flat. The ending is so goddamn epic I can't even understand why Whedon is never allowed to end his shows properly.
Just seen a couple of episodes of Utopia, the US Amazon/com remake.
Why have they done this? Why have they destroyed one of the best TV shows of the last decade? Its absolute gash. Shit acting, terrible characters, awful writing, pacing is ruined.
Is engraved in my brain despite not finishing the show. The episodes I did see though were intriguing and suspenseful. I'd fully recommend it based solely on the few (5 or 6) I did watch.
I liked the Amazon version. Haven't seen the original but if that trailer is any indication, probably won't. Looks like trash to be frank. I finished the season and while it did have some issues to start with, by the 3rd or 4th, it grows into itself. I'd probably replace the actress who played Jessica Hyde or the boyfriend (the simp) but other than that, I enjoyed it.
Quite an interesting show. Definitely raised some good questions and had quite an interesting world building to it. The quality is good too, every time I was amazed at how much content they could fit into a single episode (and it didn't really feel slow or too chaotic). It's pretty short at 10 episodes but definitely worth a watch. It has some pretty strong BSG vibes too.

I thought the first few episodes were good, but I was left unsatisfied by the end when they didn't even scratch the surface of answering all the mysteries that kept popping up, and in fact just concluded with even more mysteries. It's fortunate that the show is already greenlit with more seasons because the first season just ends on multiple big cliffhangers. It certainly has a way of drawing viewers in with ominous worldbuilding and supernatural WTF moments, and I found that to make it a compelling watch.
Just finished the Queen's Gambit on Netflix. It was really good tbh. Unexpectedly good. I've played chess since I was a little kid, and the way the chess is used in the storytelling is great and the people are very much like chess people (with one or two exceptions maybe). The cinematography is fantastic too, and the acting. Just all good really, if you like this sort of thing. Its a coming of age story, but chessed up to the max. 8/10
Very confusing that there are so many Utopia tv shows.
I only got to see two season of the Australian Utopia (also know as Dreamland) and man is it funny. Also really depressing where absolutely nothing gets done on these government projects and there are probably only two competent people that actually care that nothing is accomplished.
edit. Oooh. The creator/ actor also did The Castle 1997. That makes so much sense.
Season 3 of Columbo. 9/10. Genre defining murder mystery. The mystery is not "who done it". The mystery is... how does our affable, absent-minded, bumbling italian protagonist manage to make an arrest.
The LAPD Police Chief's wife is murdered. Lieutenant Columbo is assigned the case.

I've started watching the original Utopia and it's great (love the music, usually shows with great music tend to be good). Also watched some review of the Amazon version and I agree that characters constantly shouting out about what had just happened to them on screen is rather cringy. Good thing I did my research.
Edit: On that note, I'd like to recommend a TV series for our covid times...
I just started re-watching The Wire, my all time favourite TV Show, for like the 3rd time. To me nothing compares in terms of story arch, character development, pacing... I watch a lot of series but do not think I will ever come across anything that blows me away so much. True Detective Season 1 came close, but the other seasons got worse and worse.
I am also watching Queens Gambit, which is fun, but I feel you need to have played chess on quite a high level in order to fully appreciate it - and I am quite the casual player, who cannot think more than 1 or 2 steps ahead.

The problem with Mandalorian is that it looks nice, has some interesting characters and set pieces but no real story so it all amounts to nothing. It's just a series of random travel interspersed with some action sequences.
How can they tease Ahsoka and then follow up with an episode where the only thing that happens apart from another meaningless action sequences is emperor clone tease.
I guess we'll get more teasing of stuff that's actually interesting and could lead to some story but we won't get to see any of it as we'll just be fed more dumb action and random, forgettable encounters.

I'm only on the third episode of queens gambit but in my opinion the chess stuff is pretty superficial. They throw around names of openings, old grandmasters, and the names of the squares but nothing much deeper than that so far. I think the cinematography and acting in this series is great, but like all netflix series they seem to put all their budget into everything except dialogue writers. It's really a shame because everything else is outstanding. They ruined The Witcher and The Last Kingdom too with horrendous dialogue. It's weird because these were based on books with great dialogue (though I haven't read the Queens Gambit book).

Thats one of the things i really liked about it in S1. Haven't seen anything from S2 yet.
I don't even know how to feel about The Mandalorian any more. It seems like this show is really going nowhere and grasping at straws by triggering some nostalgia factors while at the same time ruining everything.
Tease emperor clones - drop midichlorians into the mix. Tease Ahsoka - the badass Jedi who went toe to toe with Darth Maul and Vader now has trouble defeating regular woman with a spear? Thrawn - why not just throw another name at the audience out of the blue?
It's seriously annoying because all the story beats and puzzle pieces are there to make it an interesting and coherent show, yet it seems like they're doing everything in their power to not make it so. I really don't know the reason for that. Why not expand the recurring cast a bit instead of doing those one-offs? If instead of teasing new names all the time more characters would be aiming at the same goal and realizing that would make them band together with Mando being the centerpiece that glues it all together we could have an amazing show with interactions between those characters. Nick, Cerano, Ahsoka and maybe the Mandalorian heiress as potential love interest would make for a cool crew I would be more than willing to tune to and follow their adventures. As it is the show is kinda pointless.

So, in The Mandalorian ep6 finally the show is picking up and some of the pieces we were thrown before (in previous season and earlier in this one) are coming together which is a welcome change but it brings with itself 2 problems: 1. It might be too little too late. 2. Now that more pieces are working together the short episode runtime is actually hurting it as there's not enough time to do much with them.
Raised by Wolves - Interesting story about androids/cyborgs trying to raise a family on a planet to keep humanity alive. Good sci-fi with religious undertones of right/wrong and belief/nonbelief DMZ - 4 episodes of an apparent DC comics story of a mother looking for her son in a post 20xx US civil war. Starts out kind of...meh but turns into something interesting. Solid acting. Peacemaker - Wasn't sure I'd like this spin-off of the John Cena character from the James Gunn Suicide Squad, but I thoroughly enjoyed it all. The comedic timing was spot on in a lot of it and the acting was good enough. Some stale scenes ala snyder-esque lingering. Our Flag Means Death - Hilarious period comedy of pirates.
Billions -- Season 6 just wrapped up, and I gotta say, this is probably the only show that is thoroughly refreshing for me to watch. A clash between billionaires and the district attorney of New York. The battle of wits never ends. There's no clear good guy vs bad guy, lots of easter egg references (although they have a habit of making too many pop culture references), cameos from a variety of celebrities, and a well-written script that the average viewer won't be able to decipher immediately makes this show one that I whole-heartedly recommend to everyone.
I tried watching halo and its so bad. Its ugly cheap dumb and poorly made. It can't keep basic rules about whats going on for more than a few minutes and has some of the most obvious hacks to lower a CGI budget they were trying to stretch as far as they possibly could with as little as they were given.
Basic things like music are so poorly done its incredible. They used some sounds from the video game but it very clearly was written by people who had never played a single halo game and had people they were told to fill it in with what references they could think of after the fact. The first battle has just a bunch of elites that laugh and leap everywhere while being invincible until the spartans just drop out of the sky like superheroes from a "condor" instead of a pelican. After they arrive the same and weaker weapons suddenly are a ton more effective and all the elites go down while saying nothing or doing anything that they did in the video games. I'm honestly not even digging into some of the bigger problems I have with what was going on.
I'm glad I ended up living long enough to see everything from my childhood ruined one by one.

As a huuuuge Fan of Nathan Fillion (I mean who isn't?) I recently found "The Rookie". Too bad there are only two seasons. Can recommend if you liked "Castle".
Has anyone seen "Absentia"? After having seen another show with Nathan I was obviously looking for another show with Stana Katic
I've been watching Night Sky on Amazon Prime. Its pretty good if you're into that scifi/melancholia vibe (like The Leftovers or The OA maybe). JK Simmons and Sissy Spacek are both really good in it. Not alot seems to happen, its maybe too many episodes, but its nice for a quiet night in on your own. Just a pleasant soundtrack, some pretty cinematography and a bit of sadness.

I remember liking S1, after trying S4 i can't remember why tho.
S1 was a rather novel concept and it had a good mix of SF mystery/horror coupled with a bit of humor and plenty of nostalgia. It was good overall but further down the road they just leaned in too much into nostalgia and humor because mystery and most of the horror were gone (stuff not so scary once you know what it is) so you're left with this rather hollow shell of what it used to be and all that's left is just some cringe dialogue, awkward moments etc.
Due to an illness I spent months in bed and had a lot of time to watch shows.
The following ones were great in my opinion: Mrs. Davies Succession Six Feet Under The Great Chernobyl Andor The Sandman Better Call Saul Dead Ringers Arcane
Funny and/or entertaining Severance Slow Horses Black Ops Lucky Hank (not many others seemed to enjoy it) Totally completely fine The Last Of Us Wednesday The English Interview with the Vampire House of the Dragon Moon Knight Tokyo Vice
These ones are somewhat ok, but could have been better: The Power The Diplomat Beef Shrinking Kleo The Consultant Lockwood & Co. The Peripheral 1899 Rogue Heroes Evil Rings of Power Black Bird Poker Face Paper Girls The Old Man Kenobi
These ones were terrible, stopped watching: Halo Moonhaven Rabbit Hole School Spirits Agent Elvis Better The Witcher Blood Origin Willow Dragon Age: Absolution
Wow, watching this thread pop up again gave me a pang, like receiving a message from an ex years later. With the pandemic lockdowns and the switch to remote work for many, I would have thought this would be one of the most active threads. It kinda ended up the opposite.
I actually mentioned The End of the F-ing World about 5 years ago when it came out. Maybe British shows get easily overlooked, but it's definitely worth viewing. A bit quirky but endearing, with lovable characters and smart dialogue.
Like Hildegard, I've also been spending a bit of time watching shows, and there are a handful of those I can recommend.
Slow Horses feels like a typical British series, where plot and dialogue carry the action, instead of having extended moments of actions. Acting is amazing, and Gary Oldman is....well, Gary Oldman. Probably closer to what real life intelligence agents do than what Hollywood keeps portraying.
Wednesday might seem like it only appeals to nostalgia, but it really has legs of its own. Similar to the other Addams Family shows, don't take it too seriously and you'll have fun. It's meant to be light.
I found 1899 to be extremely fascinating, actually. Also, when is the last time you've had a show where there are many characters of different nationalities, and they don't all speak English? For some reason, it reminded me of Raised by wolves (which I also recommend) because it's thought-provoking, it goes beyond what you are seeing.
"Just a bunch of lads fighting Nazis in Africa" is a tagline that doesn't do Rogue Heroes justice. Sure, blowing shit up is entertaining, but you'll experience so much more - camaraderie, loss, depression, hope (and copious amounts of drinking). There's plenty of subtlety where others might expect only "bang bang boom".
Watched LoTR:Rings of Power, it was fine. For someone who's not attached to that universe, I felt the episodes kinda dragging on too much (same as the movies to be honest) though quite engrossing at times. Everything regarding the setting is great, stunning visuals, nice choreography, maybe others will feel more immersed. "It's just too long" is what my partner constantly complains about...
Paul Walter Dauser absolutely steals the show in Black Bird. Has a True Detective vibe at times, maybe even The Night of (also recommended). The human mind, eh?
I'm noticing a bit of a pattern here with another show centred around special agents, with The Old Man. The action is split between "now" and some decades prior, where Jeff's character was still in the field. There are many twists and turns, moments of suspense and plenty of shootings, so don't brush it aside, he's still got it.
Out of the "terrible" bin, I'd pull out Rabbit Hole. It's not really that bad, even makes some present day references regarding privacy, misinformation - disinformation, conspiracy theories. The acting is more than fine, though it would probably have been better suited 10 years ago.
There are so many more series I'd like to talk about, but I'll just add one that perhaps very few people have watched. Have you ever seen Jeff Daniels as a baddie? Well here you go Godless
I have Bodyguard on my yet-to-watch list (though it's a long one...:D)
Until then, I'd like to put forth two very different British shows:
Fleabag is somewhat popular, though still an overlooked gem. Breaking the fourth wall is not something new, but it's done quite well here. Following tradition, the humour is often dry and anything dramatic is forced down and generally avoided (just like in real life *nervous chuckle*). It felt almost therapeutic, though it might not be for everyone.
If you know who David Mitchell and Robert Webb are, then you've probably already seen Ambassadors. This is, at least for me, typical British humour - restrained, ironic, witty. A bit older, from 2013, though it holds up well because it doesn't rely on anything special.
Currently, I'm watching Battlestar Galactica because I saw many recommendations over the years. Back when it was broadcasted, I stopped watching somewhere in season 3, and I forgot almost everything over the years. It's a solid show, but nowhere near the level of justifying a place among the best shows ever, in my opinion. Why is this show considered by so many as one of the best ever? Is it something in later season 3 or season 4 or am I simply too old? Having recently watched Six feet under, which holds up to be among the best, I just don't see Battlestar Galactica being that great.
No, it's the first few seasons that people like. I can't remember when it falls off, but it's when almost every remaining main character ends up being a Cylon in disguise... and then some sort of Angel/ resurrected character. I still like the beginning, but I haven't seen the end in ages.
33, for instance, is my go to for how to do a proper space chase (in contrast to the TLJ).

Thank you. Ok, I'm not there with the Cylon reveals. There are some pretty good episodes, but for me everything Cylon related is rather weak and has (if not for some explanation to be given later on), huge plot holes in regard to what the Cylons do or what their goals are. The episodes focussed on engineering problems without techno-babble were pretty decent.
That reminds of the new show called Silo. There is a great episode (number 3) about the repair of a huge machine. That episode is worth a watch, even if you don't plan on watching the rest of the show. It works as a stand-alone episode.
I watched the first episode of The Silo and it got me so intrigued that I started reading the book. Post-apocalyptic stories can be kind of hit or miss, though this one brings a somewhat original flavour. Almost done with the book, so I'm looking forward to seeing how it got adapted to a TV show.
Just to plug another British show, there's also The Outlaws. If you ever wondered what happened to Captain Koons after he handed in that watch, well, he became a grifter, travelled the world and deserted his family. Now, in his old age, he's been sentenced to community work alongside 6 other characters somewhere in Bristol, England. Can a professional con artist redeem himself? Will the new Romeo and Juliet make it this time? How difficult is it to become an influencer? Only one way to find out... (disclaimer: some aspects of the show's description may have been embellished under artistic license)

Yes, episode 4 stands out, the others are solid post-apocalyptic, but nothing special. It's a good show and future seasons might be even better. It's refreshing that the writers seem to have some engineering knowledge compared to the techno-babble in some Star Trek shows.
This week I continued watching Battlestar Galactica based on a viewing order I found on IMDB. Interestingly, I enjoy season 4 and the Razor movie more than seasons 2 and 3.
Everyone talking about all this great sci-fi but not mentioning The Expanse is making me cry. If you haven't watched it, watch it. Its the best show that's been on TV since the early season of Game of Thrones and the best sci-fi since the early seasons of BSG. Only it finishes just as strongly as it starts (the middle few seasons are the absolute best though)
Here's a good non spoiler scene. Even just this massive ship launching is one of the coolest things I've ever seen, and nothing else happens...
I don't know I really didn't like expanse. The first season was good but after that I felt like it dragged a lot and the story of the ship didn't really fit into the larger story well and both just struggled a bit. I think it just might be that the space action scenes didn't hit the same as it would if I never saw BSG or B5.

I'm surprised tbh. Most fans of the show think season 2-3 is the best run with very little filler... I guess that's opinions for ya.
Yeah I didn't like expanse either. Read the books and found them good at first and then just okay as they progressed. But the show unfortunately has certain drawbacks which I felt were due to trying to stretch episodes (low budget?). Like cutting between three different tense situations with super slow progression for half an episode at a time put me off. Which is unfortunate because I really like the cast and the aesthetics of the show
The Expanse is a great show. I tried the books, but didn't like them. One problem with the show was that one of the lead actors was having a #metoo scandal and needed to be killed off. Funnily enough, I found everything about the protomolecule much less interesting than the political and social themes. The battles outside the protomolecule stories felt realistic, and James S. A. Corey, the author of the books, has a lot of knowledge in that area. The battles reminded me of "The Americans," a great show of a different genre. They feel raw, realistic, and dirty. Battlestar Galactica, (I'm watching season 4, episode 17 tonight) was a show before the debacle of the Lost ending. It seems they were trying to explain things from earlier in the show and failed. For such a show, the writers need to know the ending before writing the pilot. Many things in Battlestar Galactica feel dated, while for example Six Feet Under, made around the same time, still holds up.
I liked the series and the books (as far as I read- haven't read the time skip yet) although there was one book that I thought jumped around to too many Point of Views.
So far, Secret Invasion is a letdown. Olivia Coleman and Samuel L. Jackson have one dialogue that stands out; the rest, including the opening with Martin Freeman, is forgettable Marvel mass production.
The Bear is a great show about a restaurant. Season two was just released. As a European, I don't get all the references, but it's still worth it. Many episodes have high energy, fast talking, shouting, and constant high-octane dialogue. There is a longer episode in the middle with amazing guest stars: Gillian Jacobs, Bob Odenkirk, John Mulaney, and Jamie Lee Curtis. There are also slower episodes; one is about a character going to Copenhagen to learn to make high-end deserts. Nothing really happens, but somehow it still works.
I just watched the first episode of The Witcher season 3. Unlike probably most others, I enjoyed it. I read the books years ago after playing the Witcher 3 game. I read the books back-to-back during a hospital stay, and I don't remember them all that well. But I remember that they felt somewhat unpolished. Great world-building and great ideas, but the actual writing didn't seem that great. So I don't mind changing the source material, and I found it a bit odd that Cavill cherishes it so much to give up the role because of that. It's one of these shows that I really enjoyed, including season 2, and I was totally surprised that most of the internet seemed to hate it. So far, I like the humor (the best line: "I know you know. It's a rule of threes thing. Has to be done.") and the fights. The story is just the story that I somewhat remember, but I couldn't tell you the differences from the source material. The books have huge potential to be the basis for a story-telling universe that could go on for a long time. In my humble opinion, change the source material, as long as the result is engaging and not like Blood Origin. So I recommend watching season 3.
Oi, mate, what'ch think about Australian tv series, 'cuz I wanna tell you about this little gem from Down Under. UpRight's got some heartwarming storytelling, breathtaking scenery, and top-notch acting. Tim Minchin and Milly Alcock (young Rhaenyra Targaryen) travel through the scorching Australian desert hoping to get on through the other side for a chance of forgiveness and redemption. It's really something else.
Also watched The Witcher Part 1, it was ahm... not that great. Not much goes on, episodes felt too long, and the dialogue was kinda meh. I'm guessing it's all a setup for Part 2, where some things are gonna go down, but still...

Upright season 1 is great. I didn't watch season 2, yet. What I like about Australian shows is that they tell stories with characters that feel real in comparison with US productions. In the US, the characters are always the best, they went to the best university and finished top of the class, are geniuses, and so on. Australian shows are often about characters, that you could actually meet and talk to. Totally Completely Fine looks promising, but I've only watched two episodes so far.
I'm currently watching From. It's not a good show, and it's obvious, from season 1, that they will never explain the mysteries satisfactorily. But the title music is just so good, and that sucked me in and now lets me enjoy the ride to a terrible ending and probably (or better hopefully) an early cancellation as well.
I've enjoyed The Witcher a lot, also S3. Somehow, on first watch, the first season was kinda meh, but rewatching it made me enjoy it far more. (Huge time jumps without telling the audience might not be that great story telling I guess.)
Warrior season 3 came out a few days ago. The show is set during the Tong Wars in late 1870s San Francisco. It features a wide variety of characters and is considered important for the way Chinese and Irish immigrants are displayed. But unlike many shows about social topics, this one has fight scenes that rival cinema. Most action shows (this one has at least as much action as it is social or political) have a few large fight scenes; this one has them all the time, and they are amazing to watch. Unlike most action shows, this one has engaging storylines and great acting.
The final three season 3 episodes of The Witcher are out. It starts out amazing and I don't understand Cavill (quit the show because it deviated too much from the source material) at all. In my opinion, season 3 is great, especially for book readers. I read the books some years ago and don't mind the changes. Actually, for non-readers, the show might be confusing. I'm not sure how well the games actually tell the story because I read the books before I played the games, and I played part 3 before part 2. Some of the actors did really well. MyAnna Buring (Tissaia), Joey Batey (Jaskier) and Lars Mikkelsen ( Stregobor) stood out and outshone the main cast.
Gen V is fun. It's based in the "The Boys" universe and about teenagers in a superhero college. Everything just works, action, humor, soundtrack, and drama.
Edit: I nearly forgot that the first episode contains the funniest sex scene I have ever seen. Full male frontal nudity—not the hanging down version but the standing up version. But it's funny, not sexy, and a must-see.

It didn't really work for me. The mc is super self-centered and unlikable. The characters and powers are uninspiring. The CGI is not the best and the plot isn't really thrilling. Not sure if I want to continue after the first episode.

It's always fascinating how differently people see works of art and culture. I was completely fascinated and toned down the text before submitting. But reading your comment and thinking about the show made me realize that you saw it a lot more objectively than me. Did you ever watch a show or movie and love it, but only until you realized that pretty much everyone else hated it?
Edit: After thinking about it a bit longer and considering the trauma the main character faced, I think her being self-centered and not empathic is pretty logical. I enjoy main characters that are a bit unlikable and not overly attractive because they feel more real. Regarding the powers being boring, in the next two episodes, the roommate's power is made a lot more interesting than it initially appears.

I've seen quite a few of those. Typically when it comes to more artsy stuff that's not easily digestible by general audience. Titles like Valhalla Rising for example (it's a title that you either love or hate, there is no middle ground really, but I guess it can be said about most of Refn's works). I absolutely loved it but most people around me hated it. I still love this movie.
Typically I don't change my opinion on stuff too often and am not really swayed by other's opinions when it comes to movies/tv shows/books etc.
And when it comes to Gen V protagonist there's a big difference between flawed character and unlikable character. She's presumptuous and borderline obnoxious. Sure, she did suffer trauma but is trying to force her views on others and does stuff because of this trauma while at the same time hiding it from everyone and lying to everyone about it. She also suffers from a common anime trope of feeling entitled and thinking that if you try the same thing over and over enough it'll eventually work out, unable to accept failure and properly deal with it.

Have you ever seen Beyond the Black Rainbow? I watched that thinking 'I'm never going to be able to share this with my friends, ever'. Its great though.

The one with Alan Ritchson? Has great reviews on IMDB. Will binge on christmas holidays me thinks
While I haven't finished Slow Horses season 3 or Fargo season 5, both are well-crafted entertainment. For those interested in the meeting point of religion and Artificial Intelligences after reading my latest blog entry, I can recommend Mrs. Davis.
