Good opening show.
I think the tie in with all the movie continuity will help a lot in the story telling they do - they can be pretty safe in skipping over some (usually silly) exposition to explain things because the movies and background provides a shortcut. They can probably be safe in assuming people will know and pick up on things, with only a few short cues.
For example...
+ Show Spoiler +Seriously, don't read this if you haven't seen the episode. And you should have watched it, because dammit it's good. + Show Spoiler +... in the first episode, the don't have to spell out what Extremis is or really what it does, what the possible danger it presents is - that's covered for anyone that saw Iron Man 3. It prevents them from having to muddle the denouement, as well, because (again, from Iron Man 3) we know that it's possible to "fix" Extremis problems. (Well, until Stark gets around to stabilizing it and expanding it later on in Iron Man 4 or Avengers 2. Possibly.) And then there's the side conversation about Phil... I'm thinking there will be some significant story there.

Any Marvel hero could conceivably be in SHIELD, right? Oh God I just realised the F4 are Marvel as well... SHIELD is basically the organization of normal humans in the comics that keeps the Superhero and Alien characters in check. A couple heroes have been part of the organization (Captain, notably) and Tony Stark was the director for a while when Nick Fury was dead. The show is going to focus on normal agents learning about superheroes and villains, but they've mentioned the possibility of having movie-characters guest from time to time. The film/show rights for Fantastic Four are still owned by Fox, I think, so while technically they're Marvel heroes, Marvel Studios has no ability to use them. Same with Sony and Spiderman if I'm not mistaken. And fox ( I think) and the x-men. It would be much cooler with all the rights in one holder, but thats not going to happen any time soon.

Did no one else find it incredibly cheesy? I had to force myself to watch the whole thing honestly. I'm going to give it one more go but if next week's is this cringe-inducing I'm out. Pretty disappointed so far.

It was really cheesy and shows really need to stop with these young hyperactive and "funny" lab geeks and computer hackers... it's not the 90's anymore.

Some parts of it were okay, I managed to deal with the "geeks" in their team which were pretty dumb but then they showed that flying car at the end.... wtf was that? Now every vehicle that shouldn't fly just flies because of the carrier thing?. That was cheesy beyond belief, felt like I was watching a back to the future, totally out of place there.
I thought they were going to go with a less serious and not shitty version of heroes but this is just cheesy, if they don't tone that down I'll probably stop watching in a couple of weeks.

Flying cars are being developed for the real world, its not that ridiculous.

The flying car is a callback to the original comic series Nick Fury: Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D., which is basically what the show is based on. So it's a bit cheesy, sure, but it would be like not having Jarvis in Iron Man or Captain America's shield being made out of some other material than Vibranium.
The geek twins were the only cringe-y part of it for me.

First episode was extremely solid for what pilots are normally like. I'll give it the first season to see if I stick with it or not. I'm mostly interested to see if it becomes more or less serious. People need to remember that the first couple of episodes, especially one for network television has to go after the casual audience. They need numbers. They know the people already fans of the universe are going to tune in regardless. I have faith in Whedon.

The first episode was great. Hopefully Joss Whedon comes back to direct some more episodes in the future. I love how there were so many references that fans can spot.

My thoughts exactly, I'm hoping it will get better in the coming weeks.

If you have a preset expectation that this is going to blow your mind, you have to remember that it's still a tv show. Enjoy it for what it is, and you'll have a much better time.

loved it. can't wait for the next episode!!

"Hey we're getting flying cars eventually so it's not that stupid we see them here", it looked stupidly cheesy. I wouldn't be surprised to see a flying scooter or a flying skateboard now, everything has rockets/wind turbines because shield has ridiculous amounts of money and they are somehow 100 years more technologically advanced than the rest of the planet. Ugh it just bothered me, that with the twin cliche geeks who are obviously dating and the genius hacker who hacks everything by clicking a menu sigh.

i bet they came up with that stupid faked death story just for this show. i was expecting to see some real heroes, not some black ops government dicks and sexy women hackers

Likely something like the Super Soldier Serum or some other technology (maybe even cloning).

I loved it. Found it very funny. Sometimes forced, but overall, the actors showed tons of promise. As did the story.

I expected a more cringe worthy experience than that. Not bad!

Eh, didn't really like the episode. No interesting characters so far, and didn't like the plot. Still tuning in next week though.
