So if you're interested in a good martial arts manga/manhwa and stuff like Tower of God/Holyland appeals to you, then there's a series out that I know quite a few people are following because it's insanely addicting. This more so than any other series for me makes me feel that cliffhanger of pure awesomeness that happens when you just can't wait for the next chapter of a series--more so than ToG right now.
The name of this series is The Breaker: New Waves, and it's the sequel to the first season of the manhwa called The Breaker which started off a little slow but started having HUGE payoffs. I can't be the only one here who reads this series religiously given the large amount of manga/manhwa fans here on TL and I figured this series was epic enough to deserve its own appreciation/discussion thread.
Keep it civil everyone! Usual rules apply! Don't argue, have discussions and debates, no insults, use spoilers for new chapters, and if you don't like it, just stay out! No need to rain on our parade!
(If you want to get into this, I suggest you start off by reading The Breaker. It would be like watching The Empire Strikes Back without having seen A New Hope. It'd still be good, but you'd appreciate it that much more having seen the original. If you don't know what I'm talking about please go and beg somebody to introduce you to Star Wars wtf.)
I really liked season 1. New waves started off so badly.. They took a huge step backwards in the beginning but I feel its gonna get better from now on.
Holyland might be my favorite manga ever so i dont think the breaker is on that level, but it is a great manhwa if you like action types. The breaker season 1 is much better than new waves, but new waves has recently started to get interesting too so in a few months itll get really good.
Holyland is definitely my favourite manga, and this would probably be my third, behind All-Rounder Meguru. It's not nearly as realistic as those two, but there's some definite character development and an okay, if slightly drawn out, story. The recent chapters of NW are almost as good as the climax of The Breaker in my opinion. I can't remember a time where I've been more excited for a chapter to come out.
I love this series despite a few pretty serious flaws. I think the team that makes it does a really incredible job when it comes to illustrating the differences in power/skill between two vastly divergent sides. You can look at the end of the first series or any of the chapters with Jae-Kyu Kwon fighting in them.
In terms of a comparison to Holyland, I think that it really depends what you're looking for. I mean, that applies to anything, but despite having a determinator for a main character and revolving around fighting there isn't that much in common between the series besides general excellence.
Big fan of the series, although i am not sure i like the current arc. + Show Spoiler +
While i like that he gets his ki-center fixed, i have to say that he's just doing way to well. I mean yes, Phoenix rebirth sth, but it's not like they fixed his ki-center, it's like they gave him the power to be top 50 martial artist out of nowhere
I am on the fence about season 2. First season was awesome. But the pace has slowed so much and the story so far has not been very interesting. I want to care about the characters but my excitement level is quite low tbh.

The reason why i wait from 6 months to a year and then read all chapters at once.
It's been consistently good for a while now since it picked up in S2. I was just reading it because I liked the characters until a few months ago when it was like I NEED THE NEXT CHAPTER NOW every release.
I also love the anticipation from manga/manhwa almost as much as I like reading it. It's weird, it's like its own special thing where each week I get a bunch of little treats.
This series is so fun! Idk if you can compare TBNW to something like Holyland, they kind of go in different directions, but it's a pretty good fighting manhwa. And Shioon is a cutie.
The Breaker is the only manhwa that i chase diligently, that every chapter seems like a cliffhanger.
Awesome stuff. Never got bored, never stop anticipating the next chapter. Can't recommend it enough to anyone who remotely enjoys manga/fighting style mangas.
Just finished the breaker yesterday after a friend recommended it on Sunday, (sleep is for the weak right? >_>) but oddly, I got 4 chapters into this one and just felt bored. Does it improve significantly?

Depends what you're bored by, but yes, overall it does get better. Shioon eventually starts to get a grip on things (more so than in the beginning, anyway) and the art improves a LOT.
One of my absolute favourites, really happy that New Waves also is awesome now, the start was really slow. Also the elders really annoyed me at the start but now I love them, all the old guys are so sick in this manhwa lol.
But what exactly happened to Shion's body on that island? It's awesome but I don't exactly get why it happened. The doctor called it a miracle I think, he really is superhuman now. Guess I have to reread.

I think I remember the doctor saying few chapters ago shion actually was now mastering the nine arts and that's why he was able to recover or something.
But i'm prolly wrong.
edit : and this is by far my favourite manga and I think it's not a manwha because the art is japanese and the story is from a korean.

What doctor? You can see he's practicing it because he went trough the videos that nine arts dragon left him in the cell phone. But he's still not using all of them i think, he's mostly using things he's been taught by the Sunwoo clan.

I think it just has to do with him eating that ball and getting his ki center fixed (plus the nine arts), so now he has a sick amount of energy in every part of his body, like the opposite of Lady Sosul.
I agree. Season 1 was awesome but with NW the pace got a lot slower and the pages per release less (if I'm not mistaken). I really fell in love with the artwork so it's hard for me to take a ~6 month break from it. Getting some cool fighting scenes but no story development every week feels kinda frustrating. So I guess there's no helping it..

but didn't they just apologize for making content less chapters, like this week's...I'm sure they will pick up the story, the current short arc seems like a filler for something big.

Pretty sure when Jun-grandpa dude did the death-ki heal thing on Shioon on it interacted with his body type or the ball thing he ate in s1 and that's why he's recovered his ki.

Manga/manhwa are the same thing and the original language is Korean, it's just a technicality but it's manhwa .

Yes. Don't drop this one, it gets insane.
Just caught up, thanks for this, HOLY FUCK NARUTO SUCKS IN COMPARISION
Sadly nothing really happened in this chapter, I'm looking forward to some plot advancement when Shioon breaks out of the needle prison or Sera/Jinnie show up and kick the shit out of the suit guy

Yea, I want to see Shioon break out of the needle prison. Can't wait for other character reactions to him fighting vs the doctor and breaking out of the needle prison.
I don' think Sera/Jinnie are even close to the skill level of that guy. Only the other Sunwoo elders can beat him (unless Sera uses some cunning to defeat him in a sneaky way, or they fight 2v1, but I still think they'd lose).
I can't wait to finally see the fat elder with the glasses fighting. XD
And I already said this, but I must repeat it... elder Kwon is such a BOSS. I literally got goosebumps when he jumped from the helicopter, it was drawn so awesomely, his face was priceless - "I'm going to fucking MURDER you for touching our Gaju".
On July 26 2013 19:26 quirinus wrote: New chapter is out! This one is pretty good, we have some story development finally, and it's almost everything you'd expect.
Did I watch another chapter? I saw close to zero story development. Just two geezers fighting and the rest of the Sunwoo clan setting foot on ground. Shioon not having given up on the duel hardly develops the story too
Fuck yeah Fat guy elder about to show his power I fear for Shioon, I don't want his ki center to shatter completely as warned by the doctor guy giving treatment (forgot his name). Probably won't happen but you never know. He should just stay out of the fight for a while.
Oh man, a break on such an intense cliffhanger :/ A month and seventeen days no less. I don't think I can handle it haha Just when shioon becomes a badass

does it exist any news on when a new chapter will come out? I didn´t hear anything about a break beforehand
I still have a major question. Does Sunwoo clan have that much power? Everyone seem to quake in their boots whenever its mentioned that Sunwoo will go against them.
that was a really good chapter, I wonder where the story will go to now. I think it will involve either the murim alliance or more showing of susol and how she has grown
Enjoyable as always. Turned out that doc was the one who diagnosed susol and left her in the hands of the murim alliance eh. that was a twist.
Now its time for a new arc, I wonder what the author is going to show us next. Cant wait for the next fricking chapter already. BTW that ki-reborn body is insane lol
They're going to have a close fight and then he's going to be hospitalized again? Maybe? Ah who am I kidding I'm loving this shit I wanna see him body nine arts dragon so badddd, student has become the master all of that yep.

Shioon is always getting hospitalized its kinda what happens after he goes all out
I think its a way for the author to show us how far shioon has progressed in terms of fighting power, his levels in other words as the gaju of Chundomoon is relatively well known. cant wait
Thanks for mentioning this Manhwa here, i love this one! Even though i do think the fights are getting too flashy/hard to see, comparing to the beginning. But i really like how it's all been going.
Haven't seen the last few pages but I think I know what will happen. Shioon gets hit and flies into the wall. 1 page later he gets up and says "I can still fight". In fact, I would be surprised if this doesn't happen.

but what really happened is way more badass.
Yup. I can't wait to see the reaction of the elder when they see what's happening.
Actually I have no fucking idea what's happening right now. I think glasses guy is too much of a coward to face NAD though. They're most likely helping him.
Hopefully we learn a little bit more about NAD's current motives.

That glasses dude is working for the government murim department. His job is to be a liason between the government and the murim, but priority is the government.
NAD want to "capture" seoul. That puts glasses and NAD as enemies imo. Which is why i think that those few guys are fucked.
Hope that clears your confusion? lol. this is what i gather from the comic so far

Nope thats wrong, my m8 thaught so too, but everyone seems to forget that:
edit: i find it way more interesting that the blond girl in the last panel of the latest chapter could very much be Sosul after the complete body change

I have a bad feeling about elder Kwon, I think he'll die to NAD. It will make Shi Woon realize his master is a real bad guy. Besides this gramps is too op, basically Shi Woon is too safe with him around cuz he'll just show up and pwnz anyone
You're probably right but the only thing holding me back on that is that Elder Jung already died to give Shiwoon next level so I think they'll find a different way to do it

He will be close to dead if nothing else, and it could give a reason for the Medical Master Murim to come back with a squad of bad-ass government guys, maybe....

Well, that's off to a good start. I wonder what Shihoon is thinking on stopping this.
And i wonder how it all will come together with that NAD-love-interest-who's-name-i-forgot-and-is-suppose-to-be-dead-but-in-a-tube-waiting-to-be-cured-or-healed. Feels like there's a long way to go with this storyline.
Noooo so short! >.< Apparently Shioon's blood has the ability to heal her to some extent if I remember correctly. If so, they will first have to identify this before her storyline goes any further.
been reading this for about a year or two and have been wondering as far back as 2012 why there wasn't a TL thread about it, but i'm glad i found the thread now. as an artist, i really enjoy the drawing quality, especially the last half of season 1 and all of new waves.

Yeah, I don't think anyone besides the author(s?) knows how this is going to be introduced in the story. If I had to guess, I would say the stalker will do some detective work on the origin of the blood sample (since he would need more) and probably arrive at Shioon or something of that nature.
Looking at that first screenshot of that YouTube video made me realise how far NAD has come (in a bad way). Reading this new chapter, i can't wait till he and Shioon collide again.
I'm guessing bald guy came to join hands with them rather than to start a fight. He knows something is wrong with 9arts and he cares more about Unwol than SUC.
I liked this small chapter. This manhwa has such a great plot. Even though this story arc isn't that great (for me), it illustrates a lot of thinking involved. And the fights are always good
I don't think So-chun is in on it and I think that he'll side with Shioon eventually. It's more a question of how widespread their plot is, although I think it would be weird if it was. Aren't they already the most powerful clan in the Murim? Why are they trying to destroy their power base...?
I wonder who the next fight is going to be... I think it's Shioon's turn to step up after the hyperbaric time cha... errrr... meditation training thing
kinda lame that Nine Arts Dragon is missing his memory. it would be more realistic and fun if he actually knew and was like this on purpose. this way he's innocent and can be rescued. bleh
but I like this chapter, it's slowly setting up to several chapters of mayhem, fights and epic scenes, so I don't mind it going slightly slow.
MOAR MOAR. This will be a great story arc to come back to later on, when the story ends and you wanna review the start of Shiwoon's path of awesome-ness.
qq short chapters filled with flashbacks that cut on the fun stuff like fights. I bet next chapter will be half elder kwon fighting/talking, then shiwoon throwing 2 punches and more talking between the two of them, then the chapter will end

this is a pretty fundamental shift imo. Shioon has always taken the position of believing in his master. now that he doesnt? this is going to be sick plot going on
I think Hyun Won Moon is NAD's and Dokhengrang's master's school of martial arts. Some of the murim elders said that there was no way that Shioon could learn martial arts because he was now the enemy of his school's master. However, in a flashback in chapter 104, Dokhenrang gave the Danju his school's secrets. Now it might be possible for Shioon to learn his school's martial arts through the Danju.

well the previous leader dude studied under the same master NAD's master studied under so aside from the super secret ability he never learned he should know all of NADs martial arts as well (if not better) then NAD does (with one exception)
So Season 3 won't come out any time soon. They are putting it on break until further notice and will do a different project in the meantime . Maybe check out Kingdom, since Breaker will now be awol for awhile. It has a slightly slow start like Breaker in terms of main character's ability, but it's chocked full of epic characters. Isn't really martial arts based (war in Ancient china), but if you also enjoy One Piece then martial arts might not be the primary draw of the Breaker series for you. It also covers the political side, much like Breaker had more to it than just dudes trading blows.
Put four random scenes in a spoiler so you can get a slight idea if you might be interested or not. + Show Spoiler +
It's my #3 across all genres, but that's based on my personal tastes which are obviously quite subjective.
As for future Breaker stuff, it'll be interesting to get an expansion on the 'reincarnation' that was talked about in the epilogue. Particularly how it seemed to imply that a male (seemed to be talking to a male) would be reborn as a female fighter, that is somehow something the murim has been trying to achieve. Might've been mistaken, though. It did show the little girl in the frame he mentioned being reborn though, so maybe just referring to the limitations of her particular body rather than the old dude that was hidden in the shadows obtaining greater strength personally. That probably makes more sense, but I'm prone to producing crazy ideas from straightforward explanations.
