This isn't really anime so I didn't tought it belonged on the anime thread.
Production company Rooster Teeth (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rooster_Teeth_Productions) makers of Red vs. Blue, among other comics and machinima, just presented a trailer for an animated series called RWBY (Red White Black Yellow - pronounced RUBY). With an anime inspired aesthetic the series seem to revolve around four female characters based on classic children stories (the one on this trailer is clearily based on Little Red Riding Hood).
No info on the format, lenght or focus of the series yet. But this post:
The trailer looked pretty high quality and I loved the fact that she used the recoil in most of her swings. Hopefully we'll get an awesome anime style series maybe without all the anime cliches.
Was a really cool trailer and I enjoyed it. Will be looking out for this. Never really watched that much Red V Blue besides what my friends who play a bunch of xbox/Halo would show me.
After checking out the link, pretty funny that his ketchup stained napkin is the starting point for their new world.

Just because something is animated, doesn't make it anime.
Whether or not it falls under that category, is still to be seen. Art style is only one aspect of whether or not you can call something anime.
Anime is the equivalent of a Cartoon except you call it "anime" because it is a cartoon developed in Japan. Does it fit that criteria because if it does it's an anime, that is it's definition.
"the term is defined as a style of animation originating in Japan, which often features colorful graphics, vibrant characters and action-filled plots with fantastic or futuristic themes.[2] The intended meaning of the term sometimes varies depending on the context"
I Lol when she changes the tiny magazine of the gun xD. 30 shots to realoaded kmon ! Rooster Teeth are awesome but I am not quite sure if this preview is good or not. But thanks for the news

Did we watch the same trailer? I was agreeing with you until about a minute in when they showed her face. Those big cartoon eyes make it anime all by themselves. Not to mention the over-the-top action scenes with motion lines flying all over the place, little girls with big weapons, monsters, gratuitous blood, and so on. The art style is very cool, I like the flower petal / blood contrast, the fact that the scene was only in three colors, the featureless monsters, the fight choreography, and all sorts of things, but as soon as that hood came off, it stopped being animation and starting being anime.

Except that this video is not developed in Japan.. Which oddly enough is half of your criteria. Not to mention that you make no distinction between the style of the video and the video itself, but whatever. Considering this is made by a company known mainly for it's machinima, even if you want to call it anime, it more than deserves its own thread. I have no intention of drudging through the anime thread and this still interested me.
It's sad that we have more posts in this thread commenting on whether this is anime or not and deserves its own thread or not then discussing how awesome this is.

It wasn't made in Japan.
We know almost nothing about the characters or plot bar this short clip. It would be a bit premature to make any lasting conclusions off of a 3minute clip (that may or may not have any actual relation to the content of the show).

style of animation originating in Japan*** It's not saying from japan, the style though was originated in Japan. Anyway this argument treded long enough, it's definitely anime

You definitely didn't distinguish between the style and the video which is why I pointed that out as odd to begin with. How about we settle with that it's animated and that's about as far as some people can distinguish. Hell by your definition I could record myself playing ICO and claim it's anime.
More to the point, I wonder if this'll actually have voiceovers. I actually wouldn't mind if it didn't. It's obviously going to be much more challenging to convey a story but the end result could be massively epic.

In some parts the animation is really shitty and in some ( the fighting) its gorgeous. The art is pretty crappy but meh I guess its to be expected from a low budget youtube series. The fighting was absolutely sick though, the kinda stuff you'd expect from a top notch company imo

I felt it was rendered too cleanly. Toss on some gaussian noise at some points and it might be a little less noticeable ;o On the other hand, that clean style did really well for mirrors edge so..
One has to have a very weird concept of what the term "anime" entails to claim this isn't anime.
First of all, it's anime because it's animation, and that's what the term technically means. アニメ simply means "animation". That's right, in Japan, they call He-man an anime.
Secondly, it's anime because of the extremely obvious inspiration and artstyle. If anime "style" was patented, they would be sued out of their homes.
Well, The Legend of Korra has a thread and it has a very anime esque vibe while being produced in the US.
If this was just another anime series then I wouldn't even care, but since it's made in the US it gives me hope for keeping the good aspects of the genre while ditching most, if not all, of the cliches.

I wouldn't consider Family guy anime, and it's certainly animated. When your definition is that broad, then its clearly wrong. This trailer clearly has stylized animation but I wouldn't call it anime.

The main animator, Monty Oum said that most of the animation for this teaser was done in two and a half weeks if I recall correctly. He's also said there should be noticeable improvement as he progresses through the series which isn't particularly unexpected because the next season of Red vs Blue is apparently supposed to be less animation heavy than the last couple, which gives Monty more time to polish the series.
I'm mostly positive about this but I'm not the biggest fan of the small girl/big gun anime trope, nor of super-fighting female only teams in anime because they generally seem like mostly fan service to me. While you may not consider this anime, all three of the writers(Monty, Kerry, Miles) are drawing pretty heavily from anime. I still feel like this will be different enough to keep me interested and hopefully it won't fall into the pitfalls of small girl/big gun all-female squad anime.
i think I'll end up liking Dead Fantasy more. as much as I love original works and Monty Oum's awesome style of animation, there's just too much appeal and fanservice put into Dead Fantasy.
don't get me wrong, though. i think this looks amazing and will definitely be looking out for more of this as it gets progressively complete.
I like how it's completely over the top but it's still cool because you're wondering kind of crazy shit she is gonna do next. Gun-scythes are pretty cool man, I want one.

Calling Family Guy anime might sound dumb to the common Joe (though technically, it's correct, at least in Japanese terms), but question is if it isn't even dumber to define a genre based on the COUNTRY of the medium. That would be like saying "Meh, I'm a big fan of Amerigames, only video games made by american companies interest me". It would also be like claiming you can't make a JRPG unless you're a japanese company.
It's obviously the style that matters (as dictionary.com shows), not the country of origin, since that's dumb as hell.

Yellow could refer to Rapunzel's golden hair, but yellow isn't technically gold and the image in the trailer doesn't show any superlong hair. That's the best I could come up with. I've got nothing for black.
Oh shit I just realized Bayonetta is a modern, dark version of Rapunzel. *mindblown*

Actually, as previously pointed out the word anime has a different definition depending on what language you are speaking in. The western term may be derived from the Japanese meaning, but this does not make it the same.
If you are speaking in Japanese, it covers all things animated. If you are using english it is used to refer to Japanese animation.

Red like roses fills my dreams and brings me to the place you rest. White is cold and always yearning burdened by a royal test -> She seems to be weilding a sword, maybe a stronger and slower fighting style. Black the beast descends from shadows -> Beuaty and the beast?, maybe some sort of summoner. Yellow beauty burns gold -> the blonde girl with the massively long hair? (I have no idea about her name in English), something related to fire perhaps?
In any case, I like how in a podcast the makes explained that the recoil is the only reason she can wield the scythe like that and if you pay close attention the times when she doesn't fire when swinging she only makes shallow cuts.
This is the sort of geeky logic stuff I like in a series : P!

Rewatched it and paid attention to recoil - scythe synergy. Who would've thought that the combination between gun and blade would make so much sense? O.o
This is definitely a cartoon and not an anime. First its not made in Japan, is doesn't use too many cuts and camera angles like the anime uses, its more likely the episodes in the series will not have any connection between them, just standalone stories(in anime they usually follow a story that spans the whole series), characters will not have a great background story or development(just action and killing stuff ie looney toons, tom & jerry etc). These would be a couple of reasons why this show is not an anime.

Assuming that just because something is an anime, it has great backstory and development, and every single anime has an overarcing story, right? Never episodic? I'd say you should watch a little more anime.
What the hell does the structure of the story have to do with the definition of anime, anyway?
@last poster on the previous page: you didn't notice all the shooting?
I just pointed out some traits an anime has. I didn't say all anime have great stories behind, they just have story, good or bad If u want to prove all i said is crap than bring some facts and not ask 20 more questions.

WHY NOT!!!! The rifle has a powerful recoil which she uses to empower her attacks. She also use the scythe blade to point to mount the rifle down so she can fire it. I though it was pretty clever :D

Massive long hair girl is Rapunzel that I mentioned. I was having trouble with the yellow!=gold thing, but if those are the lyrics, that's definitely it. Beauty & the Beast adds up too.
If Black is Beauty & the Beast, I would assume probably be like Annie in League of Legend. If you look closely, Black seems to have a whip and I am going to assume that the pet she has is going to a giant bear or something.

Well the gunblade already existed but the gunblade never really make uses of the recoil. The way monty portray her fighting is involve around her using the recoil of the gun to stay afloat in the air, rotation, and power of her swings. The gun blade was never used like that. Of course it impossible to do something like this but the way it is animated so smoothly and the fight is choreographed so well, it make it looks much better than a gunblade
Y is clearly going to be Goldilocks, especially since she has "Gold" in her name, like Red Riding Hood and Snow White. B is a little more confusing...could be Black Beauty? Who was admittedly a horse, but I don't really see that being an issue...
Monty Oum has always been amazing at animate fight scenes, but the more static and passive scenes shows he still has a ways to go to make motion look natural.

Yep but I only saw it today :D And it wasn't updated here as well :p
At some point I will figure out what this is about and then I will get excited. Considering that the people who are doing the animations are the ones who animated RvB I know that will be top notch. A little concerned about voice acting based on that and the fact that I literally don't know anything about what is going on but overall I am fairly confidenty I will enjoy RBWY (pronounced Ruby).
I really would've like it better if it had stuck to the minimalist aesthetic you see at the beginning of the first trailer when Red still has her hood on, before she draws her scythe-gun thing, but I understand that doesn't work with Oum's attention to detail and choreography (ie. his obsession with crazy fighting scenes). Not to say I'm not looking forward to it, but now it's more for any fighting games that spin off from it and the soundtrack than the primary series, because I'm not really a big fan of 3D anime-esque art.
Doesn't seem that spectacular. Might be more interesting as a game trailer, since it's all about showing off like six hundred ways to fuck up a badly animated wolf. Cool character designs do not make a good show, sadly. I think it's worth waiting for maybe 5 minutes of actual show content to see whether this is gonna be awful or not.
Of course it could be some amazing new narrative concept, but frankly the rooster teeth crew are not known for their narrative prowess, merely the ability to portay unhinged people in a humorous way.

Yeah, my first thought when I saw the first trailer awhile ago was "Damn, why isn't this a game?"
I saw this awhile back and I still feel the same about this : I am just not impressed and turned off somehow. I cant explain it properly, but the movements just feel very... clunky... or very unnatural or something? It's something in those small details I believe. I dont know, others can probably give me a better idea of why I dont seem to be attracted to this. It was not my intention to shit on this, but yeah, theres just something really off about it, well to me anyways.
first time watching the trailer today.... the engine looks edgy at first but after a while that looks more like an intended art direction. Overall the series looks very similar to the art style of Tower of God right now. The voice acting will definitely be a hit or miss since the drawing is taking an asian anime approach. And the series looks deep too so you cant get away with kid stuff like Air Bender. I guess i will watch it when it came out but i wont have my hope up.
I think the fact that there were so many spoken lines brought it down a bit, the male voice was pretty weak and his lines quite cheesy.
Good action, good choreography, cute girl.
Still excited although hopefully it won't be too cliched and too hollywood-esque in terms of dialogue, story and character development.
the animation is done pretty well, but i really dont like the voices. I hope im not just biased for having japanese voices with subtitles =.= I also thought both characters lines were cheesy -_-

I also enjoy Japanese voice acting a lot more, and sadly I must agree with WolfintheSheep that both actors seem quite inexperienced and the voices that they produce are rather generic. :s
Still... Maybe it's just a minor slip. Hopefully...
These trailers are making me less interested as they come out. Red started pretty bad ass and I can totally appreciate the whole red riding hood angle. Kind of was thinking along the lines of snow white and goldilocks (wasn't sure about black). Now it looks more and more like cheesy anime action game cut scenes. I've enjoyed the majority of RvB content so I'll just come in with lower expectations and hope it surprises me

It's not even close to the best MMD animations I've ever seen, I wasn't that impressed.
Really cool trailers, the action was just phenomenal.
Pity about the bad voice acting/writing, would've been better if they had just left every line out. Hope they get some good voice actors or at least keep the dialogue to a minimum.
I really don't like the style of it or the voice actors they choose. Which is kind of lame because Funimation is in Austin and as a result a lot of their normal voice actors are in Texas, so they could have used very experienced anime voice actors for this.
Reminds me of that Dead Fantasy series on youtube except Dead Fantasy still had cooler fights given the differences in budget. Think it looks too much like a video game cutscene rather than an animation work but maybe an actual episode will surprise me.

Honestly, the voice acting will probably be the downfall of the series. When no one is talking it seems pretty good, and then once the casts start talking, I kind of cringe, cause it just doesn't match well at all.

Considering where Rooster Teeth got their success from, I doubt bad voice actor will change much.

I honestly thought Barbara (yellow girl) did a fine job with her voice acting but the person who they used for the guy in bar (jack) just didn't gel at all. Hes not even really on there RvB section so I guess he is just a minor part so it wont matter much though.
The trailers really remind me of Touhou animations as well as seasons 2 and 3 of Nanoha, with the cartridge system. Specifically Fate and Subaru for Red and Yellow respectively. Agree with what others have said so far about the voice acting - it was good until they opened their mouths. I liked R > W/Y > B

I'm very aware of the size of their company. Are you aware that they hired Elijah Wood to voice one of the characters for Red vs Blue? I would be willing to bet it cost a lot of money to get him to voice a character. Also, I'm not asking for them to hire professional actors for every single character in the show, just for terribly voice characters like Red (or whatever he name is).
WTF?! He's been a paid staff member of RoosterTeeth for I believe 4 years now.

When I look at RWBY trailers, I don't really think about it as belonging to the Anime genre. Maybe that's why I think that it's fine for the voice acting to not sound anime-ish.

Oh man i though it was pretty good until the voice at the end. I expected red to have a much lower pitch and smooth voices instead I get a really high pitch voice. But ya I agree once the voice started getting implanted the series started to seem not as great :/

Well, actually...
“He is a friend of a friend,” explains Burns. “We asked him if he wanted to have a cameo where he would play a marine who had one line and then got shot and killed, because that’s usually the way our cameos work. He was on-board and then we said, ‘Listen, would you be interested in playing the villain?’ So I got the special treat of sitting in a recording studio and watching Elijah Wood record lines. I got to have my ultimate nerd moment and sit there across from the man who’s played Frodo and watch him read lines.”
They might have still paid him, but it's definitely not a situation where you get him just because you can afford him.

And wow why did they have to add such a wimpy voice to their cool, mysterious, badass character?
The animation and combat will still be excellent, but at this point I don't have much hope that the voice acting and dialogue will be anything but cheesy and mediocre at best.
The girls sit down together for the first time in months...
Yang: So, what have you guys been up to lately? Ruby: I tore through a pack of two hundred dire wolves as if they were paper. Weiss: I nearly died fighting an indestructible giant, but I found the strength to unleash my ultimate attack. Blake: I infiltrated an army of sentient robots and defeated their leader. Yang: Oh...well...I grabbed some guy's balls at a nightclub...
I don't know how are they going to create a story but they should just stfu and fight people :D I loved Red(trailer) because there were no voice acting in it, we need some badass japanese voices and subtitles for this to become really cool

I never had much hope for that from the start. I was pretty ok with the voice acting right up until Red spoke though. Her voice just completely doesn't sound right at all.
To be frank, it's not entirely the voice acting itself that's bad, it's just mixed very, very, very poorly. It doesn't feel like the characters in the Yellow trailer are talking at a noisy club. It just sounds like amateur dubbing that was layered over the video with music.
It just sounds like completely amateurish production. Also, the writing made me cringe, but that's a different issue.
Seems like the same weird crap that is the entire genre of anime and manga.
Girls in school uniforms looking sad and killing demons with oversized weapons or other gimmicks, which makes it difficult for me to see where this reverence for the art form - I'm reluctant to call it that - comes from.
The past ~15 years at least once a year I've tried to like it, as I loved watching Dragonball as a child, but any of the recommendations I got were absolute kitsch, sprinkled with emo-dialogues and a sickening portion of paedophilia. And I've only seen the mainstream ones, like Escaflowne, Death Note and Elfenlied, I don't even want to guess what lurks beneath the surface.

Please don't bring this retarded flamebait here, thanks.
I liked the first video. Interesting fight, decent music, the artstyle looked a bit odd but kind of cool. These last three videos have basically sunk any expectations, it looks bad and the voice acting is cringe worthy^2. I did like Yellow's weapons, though.

If you don't enjoy Escaflowne or Death Note, anime probably isn't your thing and you should probably stay away and stop bitching. Especially since none of these contain girls in school uniforms looking sad and killing demons with oversized weapons or other gimmicks or anything you are actually complaining about in the first place.
RWBY characters essentially had "gun type" modification to what is otherwise standard weaponry. I think the only one that is essentially without is White. But one could argue that thing in her saber would essentially be like a revolver type cartridge for elemental spells/attacks? That's what I feel.
Watching the trailers, it gives me more of a game-y vibe rather than a movie/episodic vibe. Granted the art style is one of those reasons, but fight scenes really look like they were all brought out from a game/game cutscene. Which doesn't make them bad though.
I liked the concept of the fights in general. It kind of reminds me of playing Rusty Hearts, especially the unwieldy scythe. =)
I am curious to watch the webisodes once they come out to see how the story unfolds.
In summary, as some have pointed out/referenced Red - Little Red Riding Hood (hinted at by the enemies being wolves) White - Snow White I guess (enemy could be symbolic of the huntsman) Black - not sure yet how it hints at beauty and the beast except her having car ears;. =) Yellow - Goldilocks they showed a bear mask/helmet in the bar worn by the DJ)
Dunno if anyone caught this, but I noticed their names are all just variations on their color. Ruby is a dead giveaway, obviously. The others might not be as obvious. Weiss is white in German, Blake is an Old English derivation of black, and Yang might be a reference to the Chinese character 阳, which means sunlight. Not the deepest, but at least they put some thought into it.
Just watched all 4 previews for the first time and I must agree that the fighting scenes are very game like. The fighting i feel lacks emotion, no sense of pain or fear or any emotion. The fighting style is full of combos, dashes, and supers which makes it like I just watched a game of marvel vs capcom.

That's the point actually. All of his previous work was based on video games. RBWY is just as inspired by video game fights as his previous work. My personal favorite series of his is Dead Fantasy where he has the cast of Final Fantasy fight the cast of Dead of Alive.
The vocalist had very good diction despite the tessitura of the song. Preview wise it was good for a junk-food movie type of deal but I can't image it being very plot driven. Would make a fun game :D
trailers are awesomesauce. the totally make me go "where the fuck can i buy this game NOW!" ... which i guess isnt quite the intended reaction but still.

^ Pretty much this. As someone who has seen alot of anime, I think this show wont hold up at all, except to all the raging diehard rooster teeth fanboys and fangirls.
If people just want to watch cool fights they can go watch Black Lagoon or something.
Reds voice makes more sense now, given what her character is like. First episode didn't make me go "omgomgthisisawesome", but I don't totally hate it either. Gonna wait and see how it develops, don't have any particularly high expectations though.
The voice acting wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be. Animation was decent; in parts, it was flawless, but there were definitely moments where it looked like something was a little out of place. The music was stellar.
Overall, it's worth 10 minutes of my life every week/month/whatever.
Honestly the voice acting wasnt that bad and I think the voice acting is on par with the art and the art is obviously not amazing itself for obvious reason. My only complaint is that Ruby character is a bit out of place. I expected her to be a very shy, cute, quiet, mysterious, reserved and cool. Instead we get a very cheery, funny, and out going girl and there nothing wrong with that but evidence from her trailer, shown her visiting a grave alone in the wood thus showing that she probably had a dark and tragic past. Her character is also wearing a robe/cape that can hides her face thus showing she does not like to be the center of attention and that she is a reserved/shy person. To top it off, we have a very sad and slow pace song throughout Ruby trailer showing she is probably a very quiet and passive person. Because of this, I believe that Ruby personality and voice does not fit her character design. I absolutely LOVE her design but the personality + voice doesnt match her and I find it a bit irritating.
The choice they chose to go with and made her into a cheery and outgoing person did ended up complimenting her voice well so I didnt mind the voice very much and some what understand why they made her like she is. Although her voice is probably on the lower end of the tier from the other voices in the show. (maybe not as bad as the minion that got hit in the store.) Some of her scream in the store were meh....but her conversation during her interrogation was pretty well done.
But overall I did enjoy it and they exceeded my expectation. Yellow voice seem the best so far and fit her character the most. The humor was also pretty good too. The back story was a bit simplistic but not too bad. Wish there was a bit less magic fighting and more scythe killing but the magic fighting was much better than I thought too. Only problem for me is the ruby voice + personality vs her design.

Obviously the first one was designed to catch attention, so it used very stylised design aspects. Its just like a movie trailer; a good trailer can make a film look completely different to how it actually is (see, Cabin In The Woods). Surely it would be better to form an opinion on the character design based upon how they're actually portrayed in the show?

Holy cow that episode was awesome! Those magic using huntresses are so cool. I wonder if Red is gonna learn to use magic or she's gonna stick exclusively to using the scythe.

I dont agree with you on the your definition of trailer. This was also not just any ordinary trailer, it was a "character" trailer of Red and was suppose to show us what she is like. Definition of trailer is "Advertise (a movie or program) in advance by broadcasting excerpts or details." A trailer is suppose to advertise to us what something is to incite us to watch it. The fact that this was a character trailer, it was suppose to give us a rough description of Red design and nothing of the story. If you dont agree with me that is fine too but how do you begin to explain Yellow and her trailer? Her personality and design fits her perfectly. The way she is dress/design/art, her personality and voice fit her exactly how the trailer portrayed her. Even her song was a fast paced house song which fit her speed, confident, almost cocky, and her aggressive fighting style with her fist. The way she walked into the club and talked to the waiter and everything shows her personality. Although it might be too early to tell, I would think that her trailer will display exactly how she is in the next episode and it will also be true for all the other character.
Like I said, I liked the episode but it is only her design that seems out of place with her overall personality and her voice. To give better description of how I feel is if Yellow turn out to be a very quiet, reserved, shy girl. This would contradict her overall design and her trailer to her character. This is how I felt about Red.

I think the point of the trailers was to each highlight how the show is going to be. For example the first trailer highlighted art style and animation and the other trailers highlighted the storytelling style and music and various other components without actually giving anything away.
As for first episode my only real problem is that they have not given me anything to grab onto yet to keep me watching. They have not given me a reason to stop watching so I will probably give it a few more episodes but other then look and style I need something of substance to grab onto.

So you're saying that trailers aren't supposed to be representative of the end product? First impressions are extremely important, and the Red trailer portrayed a character that is almost unambiguously at the opposite end of the spectrum compared to the one in the actual show.
That's not to say Ruby is a bad character, but you cannot possibly argue that she was not misportrayed in the trailer. A bitter disappointment regardless.
The action was pretty good, if somewhat inconsistent. This new huntress character, that you would presume is far more potent a fighter than Ruby, judging from her excited reaction, couldn't even damage that aircraft, her magic felt like the proverbial pea shooter. Also, I don't understand how the thugs that Ruby fights in the store get knocked out by a single strike of that massive scythe, and yet don't really bleed or show any other sign of significant physical trauma? I hope they don't go for the "combat but no blood or guts" approach because that would be massively disappointing for a show whose crux is supposedly the actual fighting. I mean it made sense in the trailers, monsters could be magical and just fade away into ash or something of the sort, but humans work a bit differently. ^^
Anyway, that's my nitpicking. I'm not quite sure how I feel about this, it has pretty big potential but so far that seems a bit unfulfilled and unpolished. I'm still hopeful though. Not as hyped, but still hopeful and interested.

Its just like a movie trailer; a good trailer can make a film look completely different to how it actually is (see, Cabin In The Woods). Surely it would be better to form an opinion on the character design based upon how they're actually portrayed in the show?
I thought it was great, and I don't tend to like anime usually, so obviously that's the Monty and Miles factor showing there! xD To those saying its too video-game like, all I can say is... its Rooster Teeth. Their entire company is based upon making videos about/in games. Of course there's going to be video-game influences.
You don't do so well with the concept of suspension of disbelief do you?

Hell even something targeted at kids, like Naruto had blood... it doesn't have to spray and splatter everywhere like in a Tarantino movie but still.

Another possibility aside from the trailer of Ruby being to show off the art style and animation was that that Ruby is the Ruby further into the series and something causes a drastic personality shift.

That could be very interesting and in fact this possibility is one of the reasons that I'm still hoping for this to turn out to be good.

How so? She didn't say anything. She was just sitting at someone's (probably her parents?) grave and then killed a bunch of werewolves. I mean, even bubbly people can have sad pasts. In fact, a lot of bubbly people are bubbly because of their sad pasts and their attempts to move beyond it.
I just don't know how you could have gotten this detailed impression of her personality when she didn't do or say anything other than fight some monsters with a huge fucking scythe.
I finally got a chance to see the first episode. I have to say that I was a bit disappointed by Ruby. I got the impression that she is a silent, possibly shy and lonely person but that notion was destroyed after the first episode lol. I' still going to watch the rest of the episodes to see what happens and such but ya, I was a bit disappointed since I figured that both her and snow white would be interesting character(black character isn't bad either).
Ugh 2nd episode is out and I must say I thought it was rather.....terrible. I really didnt want to use that word but it was pretty bad and felt really rushed. I had a feeling it was bad idea to make the series a 1 week per episode. This episode was largely pointless but to showcase that Red was kind of a loner who isnt good at making friend, showing white and black personality some what and that dude which feels like he is eventually going to be Red love interest.
Either way my biggest rant is that the dude voice and his character does not MATCH at all. The blonde guy character art feels like a character who is handsome, confident, popular and out going character the typical "cool" kid in school I would have to compare. His voice on the other hand feels like the voice of a very nerdy, weak, fragile, unconfident character the typical nerd I suppose (he does also seem to act this way considering how easily he get motion sickness). It could also just be me over analyzing this but I would also like to see other people opinion on the 2nd episode.
Episode 2 was alright, the problem is the episodes are less than 10 minutes each. It really takes me out of the story when things are so fragmented, and there isn't enough time to set up a cliffhanger every week.
I thought trailers one and two were great, then after three and four I was kind of "Eh, I feel like I've seen this before" vibe and it was just uninteresting. Its short though so I'll still give the series a chance, going to watch at work right now.
Gah I tried, watched first 4 minutes and hated it. The whole beginning was cliched as fuck, [really, evil henchman all with the same corny outfit?, snobby rich looking evil dude with his cane as his weapon, kid who pretends to be weak then busts out the moves, cue over-sized ridiculous weapon, random stronger ally comes to save the MC from an attack, bad guys get away] Gave it another try, and got through to second episode.
Good fight choreography, the animation obviously panders to people who like anime [ex. how the girls are drawn]
but as an anime fan I fucking hated the animation. dafuq is this: [ ]
While this show shines in fight choreography it suffers in all other departments. Animation of character movement outside of fight scenes seems just so robotic to me.
And I can take another cliched [Kid with powers go to academy with other kids with powers to hone skills shit] We've seen it in Soul Eater, Raildex, Ao no Exorcist, Naruto, Zero no Tsukaima, etc etc. So far in the two episodes I've seen it had boring setting, characters, and plot. I HOPE this show can do something interesting with the story, instead of just flashy ass fight scenes.
EDIT: Also forgot to mention the voice acting... Meh whatever the voices seem to fit the characters they play, not going to knock it too much.
Why is everyone bashing on the Red trailer? It was clearly referencing Little Red Riding Hood who, if you recall, was a pretty carefree girl who just wanted to go visit grandma. The difference in the two Reds is that Ruby can fight the wolves where Red Riding Hood relied on the huntsman to save her.
She was also kneeling before a grave in the trailer. She probably lost her parents or someone she loved to the Grim which explains why she wants to be a huntress so badly, despite her carefree personality.
I know it's hard to do, but wait for some character development before you scream that the trailer is inaccurate. It's an entire series. If the characters are written well they'll change over the course of the show. Static personalities are boring.
Finally got around to watching this thing. I can see how the short episodes can be extremely irritating, but watching 9 episodes in one go worked fairly well.
Story isn't what I expected, but it works. Kinda. Voice acting worries are, for the most part, assuaged. The trailers were fairly misleading on all fronts, but trailers generally are. All-in-all, something I'll continue watching.
Second seasons cleaned up a lot of the issues of the first. Episodes are longer, animations are cleaner, characters are more fleshed out, and the action scenes are spread out much better.
Also, Neo's fighting style is officially now my favourite, with all of her 4'10 (with heels) glory.
i'm still following it too. the fight scenes are still good that's probably the best thing about this series. and yea, these 15min episodes make everything much better to follow, giving more time for things to develop instead of rushing in 5min snippets.
The best thing for me were the subtitles included in the series. For some reason they stopped it, and it killed me (mind you I'm deaf). I stopped watching it because of that, but if it were to come back again, I'd probably ends up doing a marathon.

Wow, that sucks. Probably not going to happen. Somewhere, in some deep place on the internet, there are probably some subtitles... problem would be finding them.
I kinda feel sorry for you... If you want I can sub everything for you (English if you don't mind, français est trop difficile :S). It'll take some time, but I'm used to subbing 40 minute shows with frame precise visual pop up text and stuff, which is very annoying, but subbing this would be somewhat of a treat.
Well, the Season didn't end on quite the cliffhanger I was expecting, but at least there was some good action.
Love how there's such a marked skill divide between the first years, seniors (CFVY) and the professional Huntsmen. That's always a sticking point for me in a lot of these "combat school" settings, how the main characters always end up being prodigies that outstrip people with years of experience, so to see that the protagonists still have a ways to go is cool.
I'm actually finding myself enjoying this series a lot. Sick action sequences (that would require way too many hand drawn frames with your traditional anime) and a great soundtrack (semblance to Guilty Gear/BlazBlue, with vocals). Voice acting was better than I thought for the most part. And the humor omg lol
RWBY goes to show that adding bullets (some with elemental effects) to weapons makes every fight scene cooler and very stylish, not a bad thing. I guess Monty Oum got some of his inspiration from the Devil May Cry series. Also nice to see the animation improving in general as the series progresses.
Series seems to have found its groove again. Episode 2 had me seriously worried about the animation quality, but the last 2 were at a nice sweet spot. Not Monty Oum style, but enough flash and substance that everything looks fluid and good.
I started getting into this show the last few weeks. The story and characters aren't anything to write home about, but the fight animations are so damn cool!

Yea you can definitely see the quality of the animation improve too as the show progresses. Its been a year since Monty passed away and I think he'll be happy with RWBY s3.

I remember hearing somewhere that originally Monty pre-planned something like 9 Seasons and giving the boost in popularity RWBY got lately I doubt it'll end after this one.
And omg these episodes are destroying my heart ....
i fully expect oz to die in some spectacular fashion, i think he's kinda modeled after monty, i believe monty voiced him in the earlier days too. going out with a bang.

Pretty sure Ozpin's been voiced by the same guy the whole time. Monty voiced Ren (his brother is doing it now).
That said, Ozpin's been hinted to be very old, and is very likely the original wizard that gave the Maidens their power. So...him dying still seems prudent to the plot, in some ways.

Oz was easily my favorite character from season 1 and 2, but he has pretty meh this season by comparison. The oz hermit theory seems very plausible to me though
oh fuck that episode. Im dissappointed the oz v cinder fight didnt last longer...ruby going full winter was pretty fun and then the twist ending with salem o.O i guess the only real question is if she is Summer Rose (which I think she is). And from Salem's speech + the after credits scene, I am convinced Oz is alive
what makes you think salem is summer rose, shouldn't she be Raven Branwen instead?? Qrows sister and Yangs mother, or did i miss something lol. According to the wiki it says "Qrow thinks she's very dangerous and has a worldview he disagrees with". And yea, oz is definitely still alive.

For one, they lingered on Summer's tombstone before Salem's reveal. Pretty sure they mentioned they never found her body. We have seen raven. She doesnt look like that, Salem's plan has been in motion for a long time, and raven saved yang in season 2 + the after credits scene from season 2 shows that raven is still "good". Salem seems to be fixiated on Oz and Ruby. Summer makes more sense in this regard than Raven. I get this whole Star Wars vibe from this episode... For what its worth, my favorite storyline/potential plot line is Team STRQ/Oz and their past. I really hope they go back and spend some time on that. As they showed in episode 7, my favorite episode of this vol btw, that CRWBY know how to do flashback esque epsiodes reaĺly well.

Between the two moms I do agree that if Salem is one of them I would lean more towards Summer too. I think that just cause Raven already appeared before and seems like a separate character. I don't think Salem is Summer though or more like I don't want her to be just because it feels like bad writing if she is. I do think that Raven is connected with Salem because she fights with a grimm mask and Qrow did say that shes dangerous.
Looking back through the series, it's actually quite incredible how many hints are laid out about the plot and themes of the story, even from the beginning. Especially considering how aimless some of the episodes seemed at the time.
Including how literal the lyrics of the three opening songs can be taken. And not in the vague thematically matching kind of way, but more like summarizing the entire last half of Season 3.
Question still remains if there's explicit significance in having characters named Summer and Winter, given that Fall is the Fall maiden. Given the story about Ruby's power, though, it's doubtful that she inherited the Summer Maiden's power from her mother.

Imo her problem isn't abandonment. She told Ruby to do whatever she wants, which, let's be honest, is all but saying "Get lost." It's more that she's given up on herself & others. It's gonna take an epic anime motivational speech & some important event to get her out of that mindset.
Also, from Qrow turing into a literal crow in the post-credits scene, do we infer that the raven watching Yang through the window from outside is literally Raven Brawnen?
But back to your point. I think the post credits scene helped to show that yes the raven is raven but also that Oz is alive and well. If Oz was dead, Qrow wouldn't have simply taken the cane to RNJR. The possible hope that Oz is alive is so vital. It's very clear wizard or not, Oz is by far the most powerful good character. To lose him would be monumentous. Or maybe I'm just pulling this shit out of my ass because I reallly don't want Oz dead....

I don't really see the point of that though? Salem knowns Oz is alive, so changing his appearance won't help there, and Oz keeps people going, him changing his appearance possibly will only bring doubt...the only way I could see that happening is him revealing who he is (the wizard/the wizard's descendant
Also how fucking apropos for the end of season 3 is that season 2 opening song?
Now it's time to say goodbye To the things we loved And the innocence of youth With a doubt in our minds Why we chose this life And at times we can't help wondering...
Were we born to fight and die? Sacrificed for one huge lie?
Gonna take some getting used to the shadow rendering making the heads look like 3d objects.
Not that it's necessarily bad, because the animation is a huge jump forward. Just the consequence of going from cel-shading to a heavier focus on real-time light rendering.
I had seen the poor quality leaked preview and thought it looked terrible. However, now that I have seen the new preview I am stoked for the next season. The fights might not ever be better than Monty's choreography, but the overall product i definitely getting more and more solid.
Man that ending makes me feel really really sad. I was seeing it coming a while off and even see knew it was coming but it still made me so sad watching it happen at the end. I understand that someone had to die for things to fall apart like they did but That was just brutal the whole way that she was executed. burned to ashes and nothing is now left of her now except her tiara.
Which is a shame since that fight had pretty good choreograph despite it being so one-sided (what else are you supposed to do in that desperate situation?), but I can't rewatch it knowing what comes next.
The new volume has begun! It's not on Youtube yet (at least not officially, I didn't check for unofficial uploads) but it's watchable on their homepage now.

Looking gooooood.
rewatched season 3 in preparation. Everyone goes on about Pyrrah, but for that doesn't even compare to when Velvet pulled out Penny's swords in her montage...
As far as season 4 is concerned, again I really bothered by this whole thing with the moon. Obviously they keep hinting it will be a thing somehow, my guess is that it's a ticking time bomb, the closest comparison being Sozin's Comet from Avatar. Hard to say if Salem is responsible for it's destruction, but I do know she's going to take full advantage of it when it does. Furthermore, it's shocking how different the tone has become since season 1 or 2. Overall it's hard to take much from this, but it's got me excited for next week, I'll say that for sure.
I also really appreciated the JNRR vs RNJR argument, I felt like that was a direct nod at the fans post season 3.
episode two ending was pretty heartfelt. Ironwood's scraggle looks pretty good. Weiss' mom being alive is quite the surprise though, would have assumed she'd be dead
This season so far is really good and I'm pumped for the next episode. It's a shame they don't have 1 full episode per week, the World of Remnant stuff just isn't the same.

Honestly I thought they were going to take another month long break like last year so the WoR was a pleasant surprise. Tyrian's interest in Juane was...interesting. If I had to guess Tyrian can detect a person's aura, and Juane had heaps

Well they released a preview for next week's episode on twitter. Maybe break after that?

Possibly, 6 is the halfway point, but yea after next saturday we get Christmas break so at least one week of nothing at the point (which of course has to be followed by a WoR ) Also thanks for pointing out that teaser I didn't know about it. That shit was so sick.
People on the RT website are speculating Qrow might die from the poison but that seems stupid. Not only does he seem way too important to the overall plot to die halfway through season 4 (way before they even reach Haven), Tyrian also tried to use his stinger vs Ruby head-on and he was explicitly under orders to not kill her. Qrow just got a minor cut.

he will prob be unconscious/too weak to fight for rest of season, by which point they should be able to make an antidote using the poison tyrian left behind, but yea one of the best battles of the series for sure. In regards to the rest of the season, I really didn't see whitley coming despite it being so obvious. Also good to finally have some Oz, though not exactly how I would have wanted
EDIT: just rewatched episode. Ozpin says: "I went through the same panic and confusion." It seems Ozpin IS dead, he isn't the wizard, looks like he is the reincarnation of the wizard. Oscar is the new Wizard/Ozpin.

Yeah apparently the Wizard/Ozpin is like the Avatar. Although Ozpin dying still doesn't make sense because all we saw was him and Cinder fighting evenly. And I figured he would be more powerful than that. Maybe he felt that the time was right and so he went full Obi-Wan?
The story Weiss is going through is really interesting atm. Still, I kinda hope the season ends with her leaving Atlas somehow.
Also the face Tyrian makes while deflecting Ruby's bullets with his tail is one of the funniest things this series has done so far.

Like how many times did Ruby's aura completely deplete from before, she almost got oneshot lol. Anyway I've been waiting for this fight, and it was gooood.
So if you die to a Schnee you become his/her summon? Maybe she'll break out the giant armor and gtfo, though I'm still unsure if it was an actual enemy or a representation of something else. Edit: nvm, the answer's in the manga.

there's a manga?
Yea, seems like it's published in a Japanese seinen magazine.

Especially when we thought we knew what it was with the crows. Reslly clever
It also helps make some of the scenes he's been in make more sense. Like in the last episode when he told Ruby to stay back, and when she replied "This is my fight too!", he went "No it's not that! It's..." before he got interrupted. Also is it just me, or was Jaune kind of an asshole this week?
I love Blake's parents. They're so understanding and caring. Especially her dad came of as somewhat of a brute when he got introduced, but he's actually a gentle giant (with a dislike for Sun, and honestly at this point you can't even blame him for that yet). Contrasts really well with Weiss' awful family, too.
The end of the episode is such a Qrow thing to do too. Wakes up, sees signs of poison everywhere around him, goes "Well, that's unfortunate", passes out. I'm still convinced he won't die from the poison.
My only concern for this season is that they're trying to do too many things at once so they won't be able to end up doing all of them justice.

There are only 4 episodes left, it seems despite what we see in the theme song, RWBY won't come back together before season's end. But the other three will begin their search for rwby. I'm expecting weiss may reach rwby before season's end, depending on how long they delay her summoning montage.

I think it's likely he did some magic mumbo jumbo and disappeared/transcended or w/e. I mean it seems clear that cinder isn't particularly confident she actually killed him, I got the impression cinder was actually just confused what happened to him.
I was expecting something more akin to a Minotaur or perhaps Centaur when we saw the hoof marks. Now I wonder if it has a fear of water just like the mythical creature it is based on or if it just don't give a fuck.
Finally everything is in motion and all the girls are going in the right direction. So I guess episode 12 will be the big fight against this Nuckelavee or whatever that Grimm wants to be.

It's pretty unrealistic for them all to make it in time for that fight, tbh. But I feel like they definitely need some sort of help against that thing. Unless the Silver Eyes go crazy again.

well that was an ok fight, not as spectacular as the build up made it to be.
overall a much more lackluster finale than last years, but still alright I guess. I couldn't help but smile at the post-credits scene though, that was pretty great.

Yeah I'm a bit disappointed by the fight. So much buildup but in the end it couldn't even do much against the meddling kids. The Tyrian fight seemed much bigger and more impactful for the series.
Also the letter-writing narration went on for too long imo. But the post-credits scene made up for it.

Agreed. Even the last scene "twist" wasn't specatacular by any means. It did help confirm the wizard of oz theory though, so that's cool.
Either Beacon Academy dropouts are overpowered or that Grimm was weaksauce, was hoping to see more from it than just basic physical attacks before keeling over.
Guess Oscar and Oz aren't going down the Hikaru no Go route, with the fact that there's a ghost in his head being revealed and all. Looking forward to next season, hopefully this time with more fights (wouldn't hurt Rooster Teeth to study Monty's videos again).

Well, they are supposed to be trained to become the best of the best. But considering the thing's assumed killcount and how long it was terrorizing that region, it was super disappointing. I was hoping it would be tougher and maybe could do more.
I did like the stretchy arms though. And Jaune's improvement as a fighter was nice to watch.

Yea Jaune was a surprise. We still haven't seen his semblance yet, guess we'll find out when he finally gets pushed to the edge, his aura didn't even break once this entire season.
Yang chooses her sister as expected. Glad to see my favorite character recover, I was missing her sarcastic side (which seems to run in the family lol)
