Very much reminded me of Luke vs Vader in ep 5 and a large part of Ep 6 (Don't underestimate my power, Ep6 duel etc)- he was p close to channeling dat dark side like papa Skywalker.

So I read the movie as suggesting Rey as Luke's kid, but the math doesn't quite work. Daisy Ridley is 23... hard to imagine that she's a child of a dude who's been in isolation for 30 years. Maybe he ran off with a wife? Wouldn't quite work with his desire to just not fuck things up more.

I enjoyed the movie except for a few things that varied too much from the previous ways of Star Wars movies. These are all just my opinion, I am no expert and only know the lore of the movies.

1)
"Traveling through hyperspace ain't like dusting crops, boy! Without precise calculations we could fly right through a star, or bounce too close to a supernova and that'd end your trip real quick, wouldn't it. "

An established problem of Star Wars and key issue that stopped people bouncing around constantly was the fact that you can't jump into FTL without making calculations, while in hanger bays, etc. Now apparently anytime anyone is in trouble they can just hit the button and they are safe, why ever fight! This was such a key and constant problem in the originals it is weird that it was ignored now. BSG, Firefly, Star Wars etc all create self-imposed laws to stop people teleporting away all the time and allow for conflict.

2)
TIE fighters can't jump to lightspeed, of course you are going down to the planet, you can't go anywhere else.

3)
As others have mentioned it was a big part of the previous movies that using the force took years of training before Luke, Anakin or anyone can use the force. It took 3 movies before people became trained in the force but now the mind trick was learnt in seconds. And MiniVader had rapidly changing power levels from being able to hold someone completely still, catch a blaster shot or throw them away with his mind - to being as good at sabre fighting as a concussed girl holding a sword for the first time ever.

4)
Yet another deathstar? With a weak point that leads to catastrophic destruction? That needs some shields taken down? Not getting lazy are we in the writing department?

5)
Lukes map fragment thing, not sure what that was about, especially when the map it fit into seemed to just be a map of "The Galaxy".

6)
Han's intro and following scenes were too cheesy, with the weird aliens and bounty hunters after him.

I did enjoy the movie, 9/10 as entertainment, just those minor qualms. Movies seem to have changing power levels all the time now, so that seems to be the go to thing for writers now. Better than the prequels, not quite the originals imo.

1) Blind jumps are possible, but super fucking dangerous. Bounce off a star or into a supernova kind of dangerous. You can do it (and that's how hyperspace routes get scouted in the first place), but it's risky as fuck.

2) The fighter they stole was a "SpecOps" model (according to figurines I saw in target). So prolly had hyperdrive just like Vader's. It also had lots more weapons than a standard TIE/ln

3) I get why Rey could keep up in the fight. Mindfucks, bowcaster hit, emotional disturbance etc. Personally not sure on how Finn did that good. He was outclassed, but not as much as you'd think. He has to be force sensitive too, in a lesser way. Honestly, I kinda think all 3 major chars might be... piloting is a heavily force-influenced ability (Vader saying "the force is strong with this one" when Luke's evading him).

4) Yup. Lazy. Didn't have to be. Could have been a fleet and the sabotage was the flagship.

5) Yeah I didn't get it either. Map thing was weird. Would have made more sense if it overlayed on top of the last one like the maps in KotOR.

6) Yep. But very Firefly, so I forgive it.

Thanks for the well thought out and knowledgeable response.

I actually get why they had to make a 3rd death star, it was the only plausible explanation for eliminating the new republic within 1 min of screen time. Otherwise you'd just think, why doesn't the Republic just use it's massive fleet to destroy the first order? It would make sense that after RotJ, the Empire would be in chaos and the First Order was a kind of guerrilla unit, yes they may have had hundreds of thousands of people working for them, but the republic probably had billions, so the scales are tipped heavily into the first order's favor when they destroy the Republics home bases.

So now for ep. VIII, we're back to the resistance being the under dogs and relying on the heroics of it's leaders to win.

I'm also convinced Snoke is Darth Plagueis

Here are just some stupid questions I have in my mind, maybe someone can answer it for me!

Stormtrooper's armors were supposed protect wearer from nuclear biological and chemical, so toxic wouldn't work, they seem to dumb down the fire order storm trooper's armor...

Starkiller is harnessing star's energy and turning it into weapon. This giant beam of energy it fires, it shouldn't travel faster than light, so therotically firing from one system to another would take hundred of light years, and would also take many light years before Han Solo and others to see the firework display by looking at the sky. There was no mentioning that Starkiller are able to hyperspace jump.

You'd imagine important functionality such as turning off planet's shield would require some sort of two men rule. To able do so from one control panel seems lack of protocols.

I know seriousness takes the fun away from the movie, but these are just my afterthoughts.

This is the first time that they talk about it within the movies.

They very explicitly state that the First Order somehow managed to make the weapon fire FTL beams through space towards its intended target.

A bit of a weakness for the movie, but you might also notice the general unwarranted overconfidence that the FO seems to have in Starkiller base. Phasma's reaction to being forced to turn off the shield generator is essentially, "whatever, it won't do anything for you anyways." In truth the original Death Stars would both be nigh invincible if the operators didn't have so much confidence in them that they permitted themselves to make fatal mistakes that got them exploded.

By the way, reading the wiki shows that while it wasn't Coruscant that was destroyed, it might as well have been: http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Hosnian_system

The Starkiller base destroyed the Hosnian system, which was the star system that was the capital of the New Republic (and also contained the bulk of its military capabilities). So that attack alone was pretty significant.

I finally found some lore on the Coruscant question:

+ Show Spoiler +
The planet the third Death Star destroyed and we saw on camera was later mentioned in passing as Hosnian Prime. The shot also destroyed some nearby moons in the same system. It was the capital at the time, although the new Republic had a rotating capital so it's likely the Republic still has forces elsewhere.

Movie was pretty average. Was really disappointed with how the light saber fight scenes were--nothing like how TPM was.

Also I was hoping Brienne was going to show her face lol.

Also can someone TLDR me why the stormtroopers weren't clones? Was there a reason behind this or did they just want to try mix it up with their armies??

and the Resistance fighters only lost 2 people the whole time? So they had 3 casualties and destroyed an ENTIRE PLANET of the First Order. And, this happened in 15 minutes.

Nope. In the Resistance base, one of the alien guys on the command screens clearly said that they have already lost half of their fleet.

Watched it twice already. Lightsaber fights in Ep7 actually makes more sense than TPM, Maul vs 2 jedis was pretty awesome but looking at it now,had to admit there were a lot of bad shots, and lousy moves or should I say acting there.

It's been well-known for a long time that imperial stormtroopers are conscripts rather than clones. Ren briefly chastises his military leaders for not using clones though, so it seems that both are in use at this period in time.

Also, not sure if someone mentioned it already in the thread. But the part where Kylo Ren was walking on the snow camera shot from the back. Opens his lightsaber. Blades comeout then the crossguards came 0.5s later was not shown in the movie. but was shown on the trailer >__<

I think the beginning of film was weak; the characters went along with plot too easily, and events/dialogue did not carry much weight.

once the characters began to acknowledge their responsibilities and powers as heroes the film suddenly starts to capture the audience.

when this song played, everyone in the audience became silent and awed. it was the most powerful moment in the film and it reminded me personally of the magic and meaning that followed Luke as a hero.

that scene and the last scene made the movie for me.

trailers always use footage that doesn't end up making the final cut... they still edit movies up until very close to when they get released, so it's likely they used a take that didn't make the final movie in the trailer

Maul vs Jedis was fucking terrible. If you actually watch how much time the jedis waste doing nothing to let Maul do his saberstaff acrobatics..it's like playing Assassin's Creed 2 where a huge blob of enemies will take nice orderly turns to come swing at you while you slit their throats open with ripostes.

It's interesting that people are levying Star Trek-level scrutiny on Star Wars. Is it because of JJ Abrams? It was extremely entertaining, albeit a bit unoriginal, but Wars has always been space opera over sci fi. I pretty much expect things to happen for drama's sake, rather than actually making sense.

The Star Wars universe seems perfect for him because it's not bound in logic the way Star Trek is (or was generally supposed to be).

I love how simple the lightsaber choreo was because it reflects that both participants are not fully trained (or in Ren's case not capeable) of fighting properly yet. Its also why I really like Ren's lightsaber design because it reflects who he is.

Yeah, I think that's part of his character. His lightsaber is meant to be janky and not entirely thought out.
