@myopia it's been ages for me as well but, I believe Gandalf met Thorin beforehand and Thorin told him about Smaug and how much trouble he can cause around Rivendell, or something like that.

Gandalf was investigating the Necromancer and encountered Thrain (Thorin's father) in his dungeons I believe.

Why does he care about these dwarves and their mountain home full of treasure? Smaug isn't helping anyone. There are several "secret" hints to why Gandalf is doing this at all: - He's one of the wizards supposed to keep balance and protect the innocent. Smaug is threating this - The dwarves did nothing wrong. They were driven from their mountain and want the seek control of it again - along with the treasures inside. - It's no secret that the elves and wizards know about the one ring. Tracking the known movement of the ring "might" lead the party close enough to the ring for it to reveal itself. - Travelling is an oppotunity to seek out old friends (Elrond and Galadriel) or meeting new ones. For a man like Gandalf this is not a bad thing. However... I'm really not sure about splitting the book into so many movies. I mean... You can (almost) read the book faster than you'd be able to watch the films. That being said, this opens up the options of actually keeping some minor - but awesome - characters in the story. When I heard they were to make the movie in the first place, I feared Beorn wouldn't be in it... Now I'm pretty confident he will

I'm happy It's a trilogy, always nice to see them trying to fit in as much as possible from the book, and more to watch for us!

The dwarves of yore made mighty spells while hammers fell like ringing bells in places deep where dark things sleep in hollow halls beneath the fells. For ancient king and elven lord there many a gleaming golden hoard they shaped and wrought and light they caught to hide in gems on hilt of sword. On silver necklaces they strung the flowering stars on crowns they hung the dragon fire in twisted wire they meshed the light of moon and sun. Far over the misty mountains cold to dungeons deep and caverns old we must away ere break of day to claim our long forgotten gold. Goblets they carved for themselves and harps of gold where no man delves there lay they long and many a song was sung unheard by men and elves The pines were roaring on the height the winds were moaning in the night the fire was read it flaming spread the trees like torches blazed with light The bells were ringing in the dale and men looked up with faces pale the dragon's ire more fierce than fire laid low their towers and houses frail. The mountain smoked beneath the moon the dwarves they heard the tramp of doom they fled their hall to dying fall beneath his feet beneath the moon. Far over the misty mountains grim to dungeons deep and caverns dim we must away ere break of day to win our harps and gold from him. My favorite poem/song from the entire book :D Also:

You think it's over and you realize it's only like halfway through. All the plot is wrapped up already and then the hobbits go on to do some really crazy shit, like banishing Saruman from the Shire. Seriously, I think that the LotR movies were a good length. A lot of movies are like 3 hours and it works. Not sure how long the Hobbit movies are going to be each but I suspect that they're going to shorten them up slightly for the casual audience.
