The actor who played him in the 2004 hit, Will Ferrell, reportedly announced the sequel to the audience of the Conan O'Brien show earlier this morning.
The episode is yet to go to air, but an audience member told TVNewser that Ferrell was in character as Burgundy and that he had struck a deal with Paramount.
A video of the announcement has made its way to the internet.
"I actually have an announcement. I want to announce this here to everyone in the Americas. To our friends in Spain, Turkey and the UK, including England, that as of 0900 mountain time, Paramount Pictures and myself, Ronald Joseph Erin Burgundy, have come to terms on a sequel to Anchorman," he said.
"There will be a sequel to Anchorman."
Ferrell previously dismissed the idea of a sequel because it would be too expensive to reunite the cast.
No details have been announced as to the plot or whether it will include co-star Christina Applegate as Veronica Corningstone or Steve Carrell as Brick Tamland.
Eh. I guess it was a pretty funny movie, but I just can't stand that actor. Will Ferrell. Egh.
The humor seemed cheap to me as well, kind of adolescent. I saw it a long time ago though. I will probably watch it anyway, not in theaters but maybe with a friend after it comes out on DVD or whatever.
I was so happy to hear this, but I'm a little concerned that the sequel won't live up to the greatness of the first. If they can get all the original actors together, and maybe make Vince Vaughn's character more prominent...
I really really really really really hope they do this right. The first one is in my top 3 comedies, I would hate for this to somehow affect my perception of it.
Loved the original probly the greatest fight scene ever in it. I wonder what the budget is gonna be cause god damn it had alot of high paid actors in it lol.
First one was one of the best comedies of all time. I really, really hope they do a good job and don't end up ruining my fond memories of the first one. If it turns out to be like Hangover 2 I'd be so sad. Can't imagine how expensive it's going to be to make though, I'd expect the salaries of the main cast to be astronomical.
Sequels of highly-acclaimed films tend to disappoint. People will always be comparing it to the original and always highlighting where it falls short. Like MercilessMonkey said, the Hangover 2 was basically the first one but set in Bangkok. It had some moments, but it had big shoes to fill and didn't end up filling them.
I still think that even if Anchorman 2 doesn't own up to the first one, it will still be worth going out and seeing. There's a lot of worse crap they could do instead.
