For my 1000th post i thought what better way to use it then to start the thread for the long awaited new Spartacus season. Vengeance premieres on Friday, January 27th 10pm E/P on the TV network Starz. The new season finally continues where season 1 (Blood and Sand) left and I am super excited it has been a long wait. Liam McIntyre takes over the leading roll of Spartacus after the heartbreaking events of Andy Whitfield death losing his fight with cancer. I for one am very hopeful that Liam will do a great job in filling the enormous shoes that Andy left it will very difficult but I believe he will do a great job and I hope you guys give him a chance like me. Here are the trailers that are out now and I am counting down the days till the 27th cant wait!!!!
Was really hyped when i watched that last episode of the prequel lol, hope this is continueing the way we saw it in season one, even with a different setting.
I still face pangs of sorrow and watery eyes thinking about it, what a great actor.
I've sort of distanced myself since his death, but I can't say I'm not excited. First trailer looks really good, has all the plots I wanted to see, especially Lucy Lawless getting revenge.
I could've sworn Lucy Lawless got killed in the first season along with Batiatus? She survived being stabbed in the gut somehow?? Maybe she comes back as a figment of Ilithyia's imagination? Either way really looking forward to this new season! It's still such a shame with what happened to Andy, he was a great actor. I hope the new guy can win me over, but he has a tough act to follow.

Is this show worth watching? I am currently watching Rome and love it but I think comparing this show to Rome (from what I've read from your descriptions) would be like comparing Drive to Fast & Furious

The show is mostly gratuitous gore, violence, sex and nudity.
It also has a pretty decent story, great acting, and decent visuals.
EDIT: And great dialogue some of the best I've seen on TV in a long time.

The dialog and plotting are almost unrivaled in todays TV.

It's way different than Rome. Rome is filmed in a realistic way, no visible special effects. Spartacus is way closer than 300 on this point if you did see it. Same kind of light, same kind of slow motions.
A bit more gore and sex like said above than Rome, but it's not porn either.

I honestly have an extreme hatred for this show because of the fact that it isn't more like Rome lol, instead it's more like 300 -.-, which I thought was a total joke given that I was expecting another historical war epic not some comic-book video-game hack-n-slash movie with a plot designed for 12-year-olds. Granted I only watched the first episode because the cheesy combat/romance made me want to barf, Rome just set the standards too high I guess and spoiled me.
It just makes me wonder what was going on with the world that it got canceled and everything scrammed into the 2nd season, whereas this show has already made it to a 3rd (?) season.

love how you went into the cinema to watch a comic book adaptation and thought it was going to be historical No wonder you'd be disappointed. Its like going to the cinema to watch Die Hard and get Desperate Housewifes or something.
Spartacus is a very good show. The dialogues are amazing, and the action, while over the top, is really fun to watch. But if you're to watch this with the mindset that its going to be historically accurate, you're better off watching a documentary.

The first episode is definitely not the best example of the show... well besides the random blood splatters. The best thing about this show is the plot and you have to watch at least the first 5 eps to get what i mean.

the first 2-3 episodes of the original season suck ass. i used to despise this show based on those mind-numbingly over-the-top episodes, and stopped watching till last year when i gave it another chance because of a friend who was watching the 4th episode of the prequel series - which got me hooked on a closer viewing, since it's amazing.
once you look past the gore sex etc. the plot, character buildup, dialogue and acting are amazingly coherent and of much higher quality than what the first episodes of the original series would suggest.
it's a great show, of a different tone than Rome, but equally good, or rather better, even though the over-the-top gore and sex propelled it to where it is now, which is an easier road to walk when you're putting something on television.
what this show did for me though was teach me that gratuitous violence and sex in a series does not necessarily equal a cheesy low-quality or "for the masses" product, but rather that it can have those elements and still be a fine show. i'd watch this shit without the excess of blood and sexuality any day of the week granted it keeps the quality of production and solid acting/writing the prequel series had.
now, i want to see where they're gonna take this, if they keep raising the stakes or fall back to 300 comicbook cheesiness, and ofcourse, see how much Gannicus ownage they can fit in )

I still think crixus > spartacus, they never had a fair fight after theocoles, the others are around equal

It's not just historical accuracy, Rome had it's fair share of historical inaccuracies. It was more just the fact that it was totally unrealistic and over the top (not as bad as 300 though), reminding me of when I used to think DBZ was a good show in middle school. I guess I might give it another shot and go up to episode five sometime if everyone is saying the first few episodes really are bad and don't represent the series as a whole, and that a good plot actually starts developing by then with interesting character development.

There hasn't been a realistic portrayal of Rome in film or TV EVER.
Even Gladiator was completely unrealistic and totally innaccurate when you got down into it. Using that as a reason to write off the show is completely dumb to me.
I watched Rome before Spartacus and i thought Spartacus was awesome, they both are. Ive only seen the prequel though not season one, i thought it was awesome i watched all 6 episodes back to back.

When I watched the first episode I enjoyed it, but didn't think it looked good enough to be worth my time. A year later I felt like watching some mindless entertainment and decided to give the season a shot and ended up loving it... I wouldn't say its one of my favorites but once the story gets going it is pretty good. The arena fights are the worst part of the show really

I loved the prequel/how it should crixus and gannicus(my fav!) and what everyone was like beforehand/how it led up to that day. Still, Andy is a boss and always will be. At college now, but will look forward to DLing this

I don't think you understood what I was getting at, and for the record I'm well aware that no portrayal of Ancient Rome is ever going to be perfectly accurate, however you're wrong to say completely unrealistic.
There's a difference between historically accurate and realistic. I can agree with the historical accuracy being an unfair reason to write-off a show, but a show being unrealistic is perfectly fair game for criticizing it. Rome, and even Gladiator are for the most part perfectly realistic shows, whereas 300 is completely unrealistic with one-dimensional and unbelievable characters. Make fun of criticizing the historical inaccuracies of 300 as being nitpicky all you want, that's not what makes it a terrible movie (as a whole), it just contributed to the already unrealistic plot and characters with over-the-top slow motion violence and akwardly-long sex scenes.
I just got into this show about a week ago saw it on starz and my friend told me it had a decent amount of boob in it. Turns out the show is amazing in every way and I was hooked instantly. Also a bonus I have the first season, Blood and Sand on demand. I really can't wait for Vengeance, hopefully I can catch up in-time!

I think someone is being too nit picky to be honest. Take it for what it is and you'll enjoy it. If you like action(check)terms such as "Jupiter's cock" (check) and above all, titties(check, fap, check), this show is for you.The actual acting in itself is great, the casting is great. The overall arching stories are awesome, so I just can't see how you wouldn't like it IMO(except for all the men kissing eachother)It's obviously not going to be historically accurate to the tee, and is going to be vastly more dramatic than it was IRL. If you want a completely historically accurate rep, then watch a documentary. Not a show made by the channel star lol. This is akin to asking for steak at a hot dog stand.

My standards really aren't that picky at all, I really only require a bare minimum to enjoy a show as far as realism goes. 300 did not meet that requirement, so if I ever end up having to watch it, I view it as a comedy in order to enjoy it. I have enjoyed plenty of representations of ancient Rome that could be viewed as complete abominations of historical accuracy, it's a lack of realism in characters, events, and overall plot that is a turn-off for me, not historical inaccuracies. What I saw from episode 1 just reminded me of 300 all over again, but I've been told that it's not a fair representation of the show as a whole so I will only judge episode 1 as such and not the entire show.
I think being put off because of the first 2-3 episodes is a very normal response to this show. I watched the first 2 episodes and thought it was awful. For some reason I kept watching (well after a break of a month or something) and after that it became really awesome.
If you don't like 300 as a movie btw (which I don't get at all because it's an awesome adrenaline surging trip), you'll probably won't like the series as much as me though.
meh : ( dont get the same wibe as in season one. i hope i am wrong... the other gladiators feels more rawhided then Liam and i dont feel that he fits the role. he dont have that hardcore glow. He shud have the role of a senetor or something... so very not gladiatorish : ((
R.I.P. Andy Whitfield, u were an awsome gladiator!
So, this may be a mistake but StarZ on demand has the first episode of Season 3 already available. I watched it tonight and it was really good at setting up tension for the following episodes but so far has yet to impress. Do not get your hopes up too high for the first episode in my opinion it was rather anti-climactic but worth seeing. Either way it did set the theme for the remainder of the series I hope it continues to build from there.
Does anyone know if the Audience Network, DirecTV's psuedo-tv channel or whatever it is, will run the whole season of Spartacus again? I'm pretty sure I remember seeing Gods of the Arena there, but it might have been after the season was over on Starz.
That brothel scene certainly was...interesting, to put things euphemistically. It seems they can't just show some tits and ass anymore, gotta go extreme and deviant now too huh?
Annnndd of course the violence is even more crazy and extreme as well. Who woulda thought that was even possible? I mean, I've got a fairly strong stomach and made it through the first two seasons without too much queasy-ness, but when Crixus starts pulling out the guys guts I had to look away. Oh well, still going to be a great series. I want to see more of Glaber and his wife, they're pretty intriguing villains imo.
not sure why this show isnt called spartacus: blood and boobs, but anyway great episode as always. I wonder how much of today's epi actually happened irl

LOL@ scat comment.
The new Spartacus' delivery just seems weird, I don't know if they cast the right guy for it. He does have some facial resemblance to Andy Whitfield, but just doesn't feel as convincing so far. It's hard to judge though since episodes 1 and 2 of blood and sand were god awful and everyone's acting seemed terrible, but then with a different writing team the quality appreciated rapidly. I think that's kind of okay though since so much of the show focuses on characters other than Spartacus anyway, and they're all doing well.
Lulz at previous comments. The new Spartacus has a hard act to follow, and he's not doing too well, IMO. I agree with Drowsy in that he looks similar but doesn't have the same presence on the screen as Whitfield. Anyway RIP and GLHF to the new guy.
Not sure why everyone is missing Andy Whitfield, his character in the first season was really average, and was generally not very interesting in terms of dialogue/emotions etc. It wasn't the actor's fault of course.

Spartacus is probably to me, an example of a show, that could get past (mostly) it's ridiculous flaws. I did not watch it during the initial airing, so it's much easier to "get into" since you can get through the bad episodes quickly.
The pilot is trash. I don't think thinking about it retrospectively, or giving it more analysis in re-watches will ever change that. The dialogue is horrible, the tits are too unnecessary, and the blood splashes almost make 300 more believable. The story itself looks like it was entirely based on Gladiator the movie.
I "almost" stopped watching it at that point, but if you stick with it past the first 4-5 episodes, it begins to really turn at the half way mark. The blood/slow-motion are toned down a bit, so that it's gory, but doesn't have a gigantic wave of stop-motion blood when someone gets piked. The acting settles down, the dialogue is not bad, and the story between the characters becomes very strong.
Gods of the Arena (which should be watched after Blood and Sand, despite being a prequel) is a much more consistent series and is generally better all around imo.

As someone who has done and stuck to that workout for 4 months, I have NOTHING but respect for how ridiculously hard their job was to only have 45 minutes a day to work out.
It's an insane workout that took me a month to even complete it properly without 2-3 minute breaks between each exercise.
And Andy's character in the first season packed so much emotion into such a short season that rivals most 4+ season long character developments that I see on award winning shows. People hate on some shows just because they come in with so much bias to start sometimes ><
Lucy Lawless made the first episode INCREDIBLE. I have to admit, I was very disappointed with the new actor, for many of the reasons already listed, and the plot for the first thirty minutes...I didn't buy it. Maybe it was the new actor, but some of the decisions made (I don't want to spoiler, but it's a romantic plot decision ><) just didn't flow from season 1 to season 2 imo. Regardless, I got halfway through the video and just fell in love because of the chemistry between Lucretia and Ilithyia. Crazy Lucretia is amazing.

What I liked about Andy's presence and portrayal of Spartacus was that he oscillated seamlessly between grave severity and casual indifference/amused mastery in the face of psychologically and physically traumatizing circumstances. The character itself "acted" and put in a different face for Batiatus and the nobles, his gladiator buddies, and but still gave us glimpses into his actual self when he was with Varo or by himself. He was dynamic, varied, and unpredictable at times, yet you got a really strong feel for what he would do or say in a particular situation.

The fact that Starz went and made a prequel when Andy was diagnosed as opposed to simply replacing him right away showed how much they also liked him and wanted him back.
It's really a shame. But I think people are expecting a little too much from Liam in this thread. We can't expect him to play the character EXACTLY as Andy did, because they're two completely different actors.
Immediately one major difference I've noticed in how they portray the character is that Liam's Spartacus seems to respond to hardship with anger while Andy's responded to it with sadness first and then rage. Although there's only been one episode to go off of so it's really hard to tell.
The supporting cast is still amazing and it's still Spartacus and Andy's original interpretation of the character took a little while to grow on me, I expect Liam's to do the same.

Oh I totally agree. Infact, that kind of made me mad. It made when spartacus talked about his wife seem insincere.

Chucky couldn't get it to work on the Starz website (the web player was pretty buggy for me, but i made it work). However, it was pretty good quality, imo. Not quite up to "scene proper," but shit, it was legit and free.
I admit it felt a bit odd seeing the new Spartacus at first. He seems to lack that cocky attitude the Andy Whitfield Spartacus had, but maybe its just this episodes content that forced him to act that way. By the end of the show I thought he was doing pretty well.

Are you fucking kidding. Just YouTube any clip of the first season and see the rage and emotion and pain in the guy's face, then compare it to the new guy who has the same blank expression pretty boy wide-eyed look in every scene.
are all the episodes being uploaded to starz or was the first episode a one time thing? dont want to just watch one. would rather wait for all of them to come out on netflix, but if i can continually watch thats another story. fyi, i dont have any channels on my tv. =(
Does anyone know if this new series is still affiliated with HBO? The online VOD's don't work for my location so i can't view them online, but could view them because I get HBO on demand.

Yeah, Andy was the man, the new guy is pretty damn good though. I like him.
Feel a bit strange about the new guy( i guess thats what we will be calling him for a while) but the feeling of the show remains intact.I will be watching the rest of this season for sure..Great episode 1!
Finally got to watch the first episode man it feels good to have this show back it's been to long. Dam the new Spartacus has some insane shoes to fill but hey I thought he did pretty good job loved the first episode
Watched the first episode and was actually very disappointed. The first fight scene is just plain bad (and the new spartacus looks like a wuss). Then it goes into a long boring shlemp with gratuitious sex. At least in the first series the sex seemed to further a plot. Here it was just "hrmmm... Spartacus has a girlfriend, so they must have sex". The scenes in the whorehouse were also completely over the top ridiculous. The boring gladiator fight was boring on TV, not just in the arena. And finally we get some cool action with Spartacus versus Romans. If the rest of the season is like the end of episode 1 it's fine. If it's like the first 40 minutes or so... I pass.

I think a lot of the sex in both of the preceding seasons was gratuitous and completely unnecessary. Still loved them both for the parts they did well!
What do you people think about lucretia? Is she really cracked or pretending? I think her seeing crixus might have helped her remember... I cant wait tell she is back her old ways hehe
Last 15 minutes mind=BLOWN whoooaaaaaaa. Did not see that coming. I was a little apprehensive about the "Lucretia is still alive" plot twist, but now I'm thinking it's going to pay off big time and add a big layer of complexity to the story.
I'm not sure if it's just me but the show seems to have lost alot of what made the first 2 seasons great. Too much slow mo, too much mindless gore and sex and the dialogue seems more overwrought than usual. It's still good but the plot/characterisation feels a little flimsy this time around. The new lead is also mediocre compared to the charisma of gannicus/andy.
Ask anyone why they liked first season and the answer will be the same, gore, blood sex and boobs.
What season two is missing is the reason, and the build-up for the above. Like 6 roman soldiers show up at the gate of the villa Spartacus and Co. 30 seconds later blood and gore. In season one we would have a proper buildup to why 6 soldiers are walking around in the middle of the night, how did they end up at that particular villa`s gate, a little suspense on how will the fight end (yeah i know Spartacus is a historical figure, but the way whole season 1 went you were expecting him to die in every fight) ++ bonus feature++ of season one was that at LEAST one character that you liked, or hated in some measure both -- DIED YES, that was what made season one good. Every episode, someone you HATED OR LOVED in the series died. Blood, sex and whatever were just spices.
Now lets take the Ilythia's whatever the slave is doing down there scene. A brief one on one with Lucretia getting handled by Naevia in first season scene.
One is a free softcore porn scene in your favorite series, the other a a stumble-upon scene of two "evil" characters that share same believes, same problems, same hopes, and the joy of sex. With some manual start-up help.
YOU ARE ALL A BUNCH OF PANSIES too afraid to admit that you liked the plotting and the gossips going back and forth like in a south american soap movie. You are hiding your manhood behind gore and blood and uncensored sex claims.
You are all to afraid to admit that the new season is dull.
There, I said it: this new season is HORRIBLE, so horrible that I only had to see two episodes to make up my mind about never watching a new episode again.

The "plotting and scheming" you talked about in season 1 was at least 5 episodes in. Season 1 started off EXACTLY like season 2 did, with a lot of gore and linear storyline to set the context of the series. So how about you wait until they release more than 1 episode to come to that conclusion? Thanks

For me, Ep 1 started a bit shaky and I was worried if the show would have as strong a plot and characters as the previous shows in this series. Ep 2, however, blew me out of the water with Oenomaus's story, the slave army's progression as well as the storyline unveiling in Batiatus's house.
Dunno why people are whining... I loved the second episode :D At first I wasn't sure if Lucretia was actually mentally ill and that she wouldn't recover but now I see/hope that's she's back with an evil plan.. :D As people mentioned earlier, the first episodes of season 1 didn't truly show the show at its best, but if season 2 continues to get better this will be one hell of a season!

Man the last 15 mins or so are really good/interesting. After the first episode I wasn't sure if Vengeance would live up to my expectations but episode 2 has got me clinched. Really looking forward to episode 3
the amount of bullet time they use during fights in this season is getting on my nerves, every retarded scene is slowed and destroyed with excessive amounts of cgi blood ...
I want to know what that note said soooo bad. I hope they reveal it soon and not wait till the last episode or something. Any ideas? Also, what makes Asher so confident that the Romans will forgive him?
just watched episode 2 im really like where there are going with the season so far but I do miss Batiatus man that guy was an awesome actor. Loving how there starting to bring back some of the characters from back in the day cant wait to see Gannikus
I have to say that the slow motion fight scenes were pretty awesome in season one but now it's just irratating. We all know Spartacus isn't going to die to random Roman #13. Stop trying to make it so intense. For me it does the exact opposite. Seems to me they couldn't come up with story so they needed to stretch the show out a little longer by making a simple stap to the face take 13 minutes of air time. I just watched the first two episodes of this season and I'll probably watch the rest but it's taking a turn where it's almost as bad as Heroes and that shit was pretty bad at the end. I can't start a season without finishing and I enjoy looking at hot ass naked girls as much as the next guy but they really should have stopped at season one.

Yeah, but you've got to admit that scene where that Dominus was fucking that babe and goes: "I'm almost finished, cock in ass" - was hilarious.
But yes, I've been downloading the torrents and fast forward on VLC the talking scenes, especially when they involve two women.
I'm shocked some of you guys are jumping to conclusions so swiftly about this season. Remember how horrible the first 2 episodes of the original Blood and Sand were? It got a shit ton better. In real life, Crixus died well before the "end".
hey, spoilers
Also crixus is probably my favourite char, not sure what your deal is with him. Everything he does "makes sense". Spartacus makes dumb decisions based on his emotions, the black guy became all emo in the pits, spartacus's german friend is kinda annoying. Crixus seems to be the only one thats still down to earth.

theres just something missing from this spartacus a certain lack of killer instinct the character seems far too passive .. too positive?
Hmmm... in general the wider opinion is that the first episodes of both seasons sucked terribly and it picked on afterwards. At least that's what the majority of people seemed to think back then.
IMO, it's looking pretty good, second episode was A LOT better.

Season One: Batiatus: Jupiter's Cock Prequel: Batiatus Rising Season Two: Spartacus: Vengeance
Agreed. Batiatus was an awesome character.
But we can't expect them to bring HIM back to life now can we?
I was thinking about it and this part of me just wants a huge, disgusting retcon right now.

Well there's no freaking arena for one in a show about gladiators.

Go read up on Spartacus (the actual historical character) x_x
I feel I have to be quite literal about this to be understood: This is not a show "about gladiators." You can read the Wikipedia page of Spartacus and you'll see the general direction that the show is most likely going to take.
Need to accept that he is not going to be the exact same as andy. And andy was not instantly liked, nor was the show instantly liked. Wait a bit till halfway or so through the season to see where it goes and how it plays out. One of the main reasons that we liked andy is not from the first few episodes (show sucked tbh then) but as the character developed we saw more emotion and heart from the character that made everyone start to adore all the different characters.
Oh wow I didn't know there was a new season. I watched the two previous one so I guess I got some catching up to do on this one. What episodes are we up to ?

The second episode was better than the first. One thing they seem to have changed quite significantly is the art direction surrounding fights. I guess it's because the focus has carried over from gladiator fights with 1 or 2 opponents to battles, but I'm not a big fan of most of the battles. The one at the end of episode 1 was okay and the one against the soldiers in episode 2, but the one at the start of episode 1 was really just retarded, the one in the whorehouse as well (quite aside from the fact that they felt the need to ramp the depraved sex up to retarded hights) and I didn't much like the initial battle in ep 2 either.
I'm loving this second season. It took me an episode to get used to this new Spartacus, but I can deal with it. He looks like him enough and I never watched this show for the acting in the first place. I just sort of hope they conclude with this season and don't try to drag it out or something. I mean, albeit awesome, the story of Spartacus was rather short, was it not?
So far, things are shaping up nicely. Sure, Batiatus was a brilliant scumbag, but we have our share of villains now. Still can't get over how awesome + Show Spoiler [that scene in episode 2 was] +
... young Oenameaus smiles, and then STABS THE SHIT OUT OF THAT GUY
Man how could this episode have ended like that? Can someone please fast forward me one week from now, because in the name of Jupiter I can't wait another full fucking week!!!!!!!!!
Crixus going on RAMPAGE mode was fucking awesome. But what's up with Spartacus just staring down the mine? Was it to wait in case Crixus actually came ahead and had to run?

Don't you mean "by Jupiter's cock" - of course Crixus will not be dead and the start of the next episode will be somewhere completely different, as per most of these types of shows. Seriously though, Crixus is the only reason I'm still watching this shit - the new actor just gives no suspense or tension compared to Andy. Not enough anger and emotion. Just some level-headed guy and even the fight scenes are less hardcore.
By far the best episode this season, I was shitting myself thinking crixus (one of the few characters i care about) was about to get his throat cut. though i'm really starting to notice quite a few maori actors in the show, the accent's pretty jarring coming from supposed syrians and gauls...
Ashur is a great bad guy, glabber needs to step it up though
For next week i'm betting either:
Crixus and Oenamaeus chained up getting tortured at the ludus. Freed by Gannicus' heroics OR Crixus vs Oenamaeus exhibition match in the arena, they fight back to back vs guards instead of duelling, saved by gannicus.
To be followed by gannicus dealing with oenamaeus' rage at being cuckolded
I was so afraid Crixus would die =( He's to badass/manly not to live! Man Ashur is a f'cking good villain, I hate that guy ... -_-
This is shaping up to be a sweet season :D
I'm thinking about re-watching season 1 but I'm afraid I will miss andy too much when I watch the new season... might sound kind of weird, but Spartacus is one of the few series that I'm actually emotionally ''invested'' in, and I feel quite strongly for certain characters
On February 12 2012 21:12 sereniity wrote: Just finished watching EP3.... Seriously why the fuck was Spartacus just watching in the end?
Other than that, I love the series, but some decisions that the characters do in some scenes are dumb ...
Other than that, why didn't Crixus just run with them? Other than that, why didn't they just all fight the Romans?
Crixus had to hold them back so they could get the key and open the gate. Notice how the guards and Crixus were about 3 feet away from the group of them all. They couldn't have dreamed to beat the Romans, unarmed, in that tight of a space so Crixus had to hold them off as they opened the gate and relocked it.
Not to mention, people do stupid shit for love. Crixus did what he thought was best to save Naevea.
I just watched the first episode and I found it really good. I just hope they can keep it up. I hope the new sparticus and make the role his own. I also hope this series can have a different main antagonist other than Glaber (he's the most boring character ever in comparison to Batiatus).

You'll be able to find a torrent around the 18th of february of episode 4.
He is not going to die. He is a real historical person and he is one of the Spartacus commanders. He is not going to die before he becomes a commander and you need an army to be one

This season is really a let down so far...I had such high hopes and it's just...well maybe it's because its so slow. But there is nothing going on so far at all.

I just hope they don't drag it out...I probably can tell you the historical moment they'll end this series on, but that means a rather boring next season as things start to wind down. I just hope they wrap everything up now.

not sure how u can say that, the entire first season and gods of the arena was devoted to slaves/arena battles. Theres alot more variety and unpredictability now. I'm enjoying it more than the first season I think. Also you must really hate the walking dead if ur complaining about this moving slow

In the first season of spartacus there was so much going on and you wondered what they were going to do and what was going to happen.
Would battiatus avenge himself? Would spartacus find out about his wife? Would crixus be with navia? Would any of 10000 different things happen? And when they were talked about you listened. There were so many interesting things going on that you HAD to listen and tune in. You cared about the characters and understood them through the detail in the story.
This season? Spartacus is wanted. K well they never get near him really. When they do he kills every single one of them. Is there a story with glabour? He's kind of just mad all the time that he's not the favorite. That never really takes off much. His step dad doesn't like him and he has a rival. With battiatus and (can't remmeber blonde older fella) you were cheering for battiatus at times because he just never got anywhere no matter how much he tried.
I dunno I could go on and on. But this season there is just no spark with the story like the first 2 seasons. I "had" to find out in the first two seasons what would happen. And I was always rewarded for tuning in by see'ing something new come up. This season is just... : / (Ah problem...ok it's fixed don't worry)
Edit:
and I love the walking dead. But the second season has been terrible compared to the first.
Alright, I caved and watched ep 4. I'm at about the halfway point. I shouldn't be surprised by anything, but this episode is HIGHLY graphic and disturbing as far as violence goes. If there's a line, they definitely crossed it on this one. There were several moments I had to turn away for the first time watching this series.
I wish there could be more orgies and tits and ass and less blood and guts.
Also Ilithyia is even more of a huge bitch this episode, if you can even imagine that was possible. Holy hell, she's just Manson-esque in sheer horribleness.

Can't find any Ep5 on Piratebay ...
EDIT: Nvm saw on Starz.com that it wont air until 24th... can't wait :D!
i don't mind gory scenes or the sexish ones however I do think they could have laid off the amount and length of what was shown during this last episode. I mean, the blood and gore I don't mind, but less fucking orgies seriously I can watch porn for that.
i really like the extreme sex and violence and think it's pretty unique to see such stuff on TV... however i do believe that it's going to build a bit of a reputation as a teenagers 'wank' fodder show instead of actually being a good show :/
but then again.... xena warrior princess was wank fodder without the porn.

+1 totally. It was definitely excessive, yet I'm glad they put it in there and it was fairly provocative in a "passion of the christ" kind of way. + Show Spoiler +
That was just disturbing. The crazy violence in the arena is one thing, but for seeing the helpless guy tied up and having the Romans take turns mutilating, torturing, and amputating him while laughing at enjoying it was very unsettling. I think part of the reason is that in the arena its "killing for sport" but ultimately its still a matter of survival. The fact that he was so helpless and that they killed him in the most ignominious and painful/slow way made it pretty chilling.
Anyway, so far I'm saying this season is better than Gods of the Arena, but not as good as Blood and Sand.
1st one was pretty weak but they got progressively better and I'm fucking pissed that friday is so far away.
And lol at people complaining about showing the mutilating of that one guy. Romans actually did that shit and DeKnight easily could have had them chop off his dick because Romans did that for damn sure.
This isn't basic cable, grow a pair and enjoy the sex and violence.

I have nfi how you can rate the current season over Gods of the Arena... Gods of the Arena had Gannicus instead of the new Spartacus + Batiatus + a better/tighter story with lots of arena action + less bad cgi, slow mo's and blood. The new season is loose and not being able to rely on the lutus for 80% of sets really hurts the look of the show (too much blue screen).
Agreed on the gratuitous torture, we get the point, the romans are sick bastards. I doubt many of the viewership are full on sadists and want to watch 5 minutes of a helpless man being carved up.

in the next 2 episodes or so we will see the arena again with Oenomaus, Crixus vs Ganicus (fooled by Ashur) while Spartacus will be disguised as a roman soldier to save them. That's what i got from the previews. Also, interested to seeing how Oenamaus and Ganicus will interact now that they both know they were sleeping with and in love with the same woman although they were like real brothers. I hope they all live to join the rebellion but i feel something is going to go wrong...

GOT is a little deeper I think. I like it a little bit more. It's close though, GOT has a lot of characters that are just un-compelling and bordering on being "Mary-Sue" characters.
You can't really compare the two. GoT has some of the best writing on TV, quality actors and actual sets. Spartacus has bad grammar, cg-gore and soft porn. That said, I still enjoy spartacus for what it is.

bad grammar really?
The speech is modeled to make it seem more like Latin's grammar structure because guess what the Romans spoke? Latin!

That was tongue in cheek, seriously how could someone watch Spartacus and not grasp that the grammar is intended.
Also there's no need to be a smartass, no shit the Romans spoke Latin. Gladiator and Rome both felt more authentic than Spartacus just with standard english + some ancient vocab thrown in. There's a reason most period dramas/movies use pretty standard english and not the original language. The excessive use of accent (imagine a Star Wars where everyone spoke like Yoda) in dialogue is pretty frowned upon in writing as it distracts from what is being said. It's not like Spartacus is all about authenticity anyway, the language is more a stylistic gimmick than anything else.
Son of a bitch, I was happy both seasons when the gay couple got killed so I didn't have to see men kiss romantically anymore........But son of a bitch, they brought it back............
This week's episode was totally insane. Definitely my favorite of the season, and perhaps even series, so far. Glaber is officially fucking awesome after this episode.
Show isn't the same without the original actors. Pretty obvious that they prioritized finding a new spartacus that looked like the old one, over finding someone that could actually act. John Hannah and Andy Whitfield made that show great. Without those two, its just meh. I'll still watch it, but I'm pretty sure this will be the last season.

+1. Complaining about nu-spartacus will not bring back Andy either. Spartacus also plainly plays less of a role in this season than in s1. Even using a crude rubric like lines of dialog, I wouldn't be surprised if Glaber, Illythia, or even Lucretia are as much main characters as Spartacus.

That's 'cos HBO throws a ton of money into their tv-series. The amount of faith they have in their shows is pretty admirable. Sadly Starz can't/wont do the same, still the amount of stuff Spartacus can achieve on such a meager budget is mind-boggling.
Best episode ever 0____0 I actually felt bad for Glabber (spelling?) during it, but then by the end of the episode he's now become a kind of asshole I like. Theres so much happening with so many characters and so many storylines, its an overload of awesome.
Pretty good episode, I was so glad that one asshole took a spear to the chest (the one who cut off the guy's breast last episode). I forget his name, and although I wish he got a slower, more painful death, I'm glad he's dead nonetheless. Fuckin HATED that guy (which I guess means he did a good job as an actor).
Defintly best episode of this season (which wasnt exactly hard couse it was pretty meh so far), hope they can keep up at least close to this level of entertainment in next episodes.

I think ilithyia is going to have to rely on Lucretia heavily again, because politically she is kinda fucked. I'm not really sure how Gannicus+Doctore's story is going to play out, considering crixus doesn't know that Gannicus slept with Doctore's wife.I'm still not happy with Spartacus having a love interest, I get that he fulfilled his vengeance on battiatus, but I still think it would strengthen his character if he was on his own.

Lol this is exactly what I was thinking when I saw him die, the guys face makes me hate him even, he looks so damn... I don't even know the word but he looks like some guy who would commit rape LOL.... I remember him being such a nasty prick in season 1.

I kinda think that Mira isn't going to make it past this season. I'm wondering if Glaber is going to kill her, or if Lucretia will get a more "poetic" kill on her. I dunno, I could be wrong (and I sorta hope I am, she's pretty easy on the eyes)
H-h-h-h-hoooooooly shit that was good. Also loved the gay kiss scene. Is Gannicus a character in history?
For those who say GoT is better... Does it have good action scenes? Reason being someone also mentioned Rome being better than Spartacus, but Rome bored the fuck out of me due to so much talk and so little fighting.

Yeah, Gannicus was one of Spartacus' lieutenants, same with Oenomaus, Crixus & Castus(yet to be introduced).

Rome and GoT are both better from a plot/character development perspective imo. Not even close.
Spartacus is a wonderful guilty pleasure of sex/violence. I love the show, but Rome absolutely overall is a better show.

What I was asking was whether or not GoT has decent action scenes in it. I understand you have a different opinion than me, but for the purposes of my own viewing tastes, I wanted to know whether GoT has action like Spartacus or is mostly centered around talking like Rome.
After Spartacus and his men descend some volcano and wipe out the Praetor's army.
The next season would then involve basically Spartacus and his continued military victories and ultimate defeat.
I think there'll be at least 2 more seasons....this show is pretty much the only thing Starz has going for it. And Marcus Crassus hasn't even been introduced yet.

Hopefully they stick with Historical shit. No offense Starz, but you're not too good at creative license.
But yeah, they will probably drag it on for 2 more seasons. However, I personally feel historically they only have this and one more season to go, maximum.
The 2 latest episodes quality-wise seem like a whole different-series altogether when you compare them against the first 3 episodes of this season. It's almost like they fired all their bad writers and replaced them with top notch people. Amazing.

You'll notice every season has this in common. The first season ridiculously so.

I agree, the last episode was awesome. Probably up there with the Theokeles episode, the last episode of S1 and the last episode of S2.
Gay kiss made me laugh and also disgusted to some extent. That guy has enough charisma and looks to actually bone probably any woman he would want at the Spartacus camp, yet he went for a....Syrian guy?
Holy hell that episode was beyond epic. 10/10 only bad part was the incredibly awful special effect when the seats collapse LOL.
But oh my god... no words for this episode, truly epic stuff. Even the action sequences in the arena battles were great, and they've sucked this season. This episode had me screaming like a gladiator so many times I'm a bit embarrased.

Yeah the graphics were ridiculously bad. I keep on staring every time the scene cut to the stands collapsing trying to see if I was seeing it wrong. They fell in giant squares, but the episode was pretty awesome. This season is off to a slower start than the first and with only five episodes left I'm a little concerned.

Homosexuality is not a choice man. You are born with your preference for women or men it isn't something you just decide on.
I hope they don't turn that relationship thing into a huge issue once they all find out that Syrian dude is Ashur's brother (pure speculation on my part).
You could, just be warned that the first 3 episodes are not that good. Also I could see you starting from Gods of the Arena (prequel to S1) and still be ok.

All episodes except like the three first of season 1 are fucking amazing :O
If you watch Gods of the Arena first you're gonna be horribly spoiled for Blood and Sand at the beginning of the first episode. So I wouldn't advise watching GotA first.

This is exactly what I think too. They mention syrian quite a few times, how he has a brother, etc. I think it will be a twist of some kind of significance where maybe Ashur is going to kill Argon and the guy has to make a choice and kill his brother or let him kill his 'love' or whatever he becomes. Again, pure speculation but hard not to at this point.
....it seems there will be a new character. Ashur pulling someone out of a well to aid him!! Info about the new character + Show Spoiler +
Not 100% but from the dreadlocks seen in the preview I'd say it's this guy. Named "The Egyptian" Looks like he's roughing some romans up. Ashur getting revenge, lol?? :D

Maybe Barca never died and it's him climbing out of the well! Not sure why Ashur would help him though
Wish this show would stop killing off characters that have 0 character development, like that guy whos supposed to be crixus right hand man, i am supposed to care about someone dying when i don't know anything about them? Thats anothing thing this season is missing, varo and barca type characters, people who you learn to like because the show develops them and kills them off and you actually care about it.
On March 03 2012 18:45 Mykill wrote: well this plot seems to be moving quite slowly... lots of killing though. if they kill off everybody what happens to character development?
This episode had character development.
Specifically, Gannicus, Nayviah, Glaber and Asher all had development in some way.
For Gannicus his motivations were revealed in detail and we learned that he will not be drawn to the cause of Spartacus easily. For Nayviah we learned that she desires to become a fighter, which considering her character thus far in the season can only be a good thing. And for Asher and Glaber we've gotten to see them embrace the villain roles for the first time truly this season. Before they could almost be sympathized with for how much they were being controlled or manipulated. Not any longer really.
Dual weild vs Dual weild made my nerd heart beat fast.
Glaber turning so decisively cold was awesome too. Syrian (sp?) also boss moded 3 romans at once to back up what he was saying.
But when the big dude threw Spartacus his second sword, and Gannicus realized what was up. Oh man... The one shot where Spartacus switched how he was holding the sword showed his prowess wonderfully, really sold the notion Spartacus was the better. That fight was a long time coming, glad it happened.
On March 04 2012 00:11 TsoBadGuy wrote: Dual weild vs Dual weild made my nerd heart beat fast.
every fight is complete shit competed to previous seasons (way too much bullet time, excessive amounts of horrible cgi blood, zero tension etc ), so far i only liked the one in Colosseum and they burned it down -.-, on top of that new spartacus is bland and boring if it wasnt for crixus and gannicus i wouldnt even bother to watch it
just to remind you how awesome it used to look like
i gotta give props to the producers/director team for making such an awesome tv show... a lot of the same ppl who were involved with the old hercules legendary journeys and xena, which i watched when i was younger and freakin loved them.
Ok, so, Gannicus is Han Solo. He shows up all maverick loner in-it-for-himself type and is all "nah i don't really believe in your rebellion" and then he leaves but he comes back out of nowhere at the last second to save the day. Calling it right now.

spoilers from the preview below?...
it showed glabor threatening gannicus, so if hes getting into trouble with the romans thats obvious incentive to come back with spartacus and his homeboys. But ya he'll probably come back at a convenient moment.
Great episodes, really interesting the plot is good and i hate glabor more than ever,Ashur he has its own army with some beasts it will be interesting to see them face spartacus.

I'm sure it's based on Latin grammar, it's how they spoke back in those days.
Even the poor, slaves? Granted, i don't know much from Roman normal lifes, but this seem unlikely. I would expect some sort of linguistic differences between the nobles, and the uneducated

That part of the episode was even more forced as your joke =P I thoroughly love the show, but seriously she ran over what seemed to be a fair distance to get the bow in order to take down a little unarmed blondie that was across the small courtyard, surrounded by gladiators. At any moment, Gannicus and Spartacus could have died - and she shot an arrow right between them instead of yelling or anything.
No doubt the arrow was the only way to stop her! I guess they wanted to quickly get rid of the character to avoid having branching off another problem.

According to wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dimachaerus), based on the difficulty of wielding two sword, the style would have been favoured for more experienced/skilled fighters. I also think he was just using daggers with a ..wider.. blade that made it appear he was holding two metal shards.

Propaganda against Syria from almost 2100 years ago? Yeah no I don't think so. One guy's behavior shouldn't be enough for you to accuse the writers of something like that. I suspect you're too used to ridiculously overly politically-correct things.
Anyway, let's not forget how much Romans backstab each other whenever they have an opportunity. The women use the men to gain some sort of notoriety, men will kill or screw over other men to gain power. Batiatus was fully ready to kill to reach political office. Glaber murdered an important roman politician.
I think you're very deluded if you think Asher is the only one who betrays people - and even if he was, it wouldn't be "propaganda". Be serious, please. You're being absurd - it's like some sociology student trying to be clever.

No i'm not being absurd, I'm very serious. You completely misreaded my post. I did not say romans didn't kill nor betray anyone. And if you don't believe in propaganda of our time, it's your right, but don't shit on others because you assume you can read.
What I'm saying is the following: it is clear to me that Ashur is the evilest over romans and gladiators. Don't get me wrong, i'm not Syrian nor do I defend any side, but what I do know is that everything you see and watch is not historically true and often mislead for poor interests. And to be clear, i'm not saying propaganda is Spartacus TVShow's purpose.
The most blattant scene is when Glabber offers him a chance to prove himself, that precise moment when Ashur is surrounded by romans; they all yell at him: "Fucking Syrian, ah ah ah, fucking Syrian [...]". The following scene is Ashur and his men killing women and children, this scene is particularly noticable because we rarely see neither romans nor gladiators killing children and women savagely in Spartacus. Plus as I said above, whenever there is a violent scene with slowmotions, a sweet "arabish" music comes to cover up the whole scene nicely.
This might be insignificant for some of you, but unconsciously your brain get a very straight up message . And no I didn't study proper sociology eventhough I did study literature and cinematography. Do you think the average young people who watch this show will have a nice picture of Syria and Syrian people?
Oh yeah I totally get what you're saying man. Hollywood seriously lol. That is such blatant criticism of Syria. Holy hell why hasn't ANYONE noticed this before you. Dude did you also see that american hollywood movie with like that British bad guy? I was like shit, USA prepping for war with Britain now or what? Laying the groundwork for future generations you know what I'm saying? Kids growing up in the US of A will onconciously think of Brits as evil baddies so like war is inevitable. Do you agree I would like your input please. Anyway back to Spartacus did you see that Egyptian monster or whatever? That's not a very correct portrayal of Egyptians imo. Typical hollywood sigh. Well, I for once will now boycott Spartacus. Too much blatant US propaganda. Peace out.

Ahh.. hollywood.
It has nothing to do with "not believing in propaganda". I'm merely saying that this particular show is not propaganda against Syria, in that it shows one Syrian guy who appears to be "evil", which is in itself no statement regarding a modern Syria which has nothing to do with what we see in the show.
You say that the scene were Romans are being racist toward him has something to do with propaganda, do you suggest that all accounts of racism should be removed from the show which more than once has people making fun of Thracians, or really anyone who's not part of the roman empire which BTW trampled all over everyone for a while. The Romans are being demonized by this show anyway, do you really think people give a crap about them being mean to a dude?
Plenty of shows have a villain who's really bad, should they outright remove the nationality of EVERY bad person in order to make sure it doesn't affect modern nations? Or are you suggesting that characters like Asher should be toned down to be nicer?
Guys guys, I think this show might be propaganda against Italy - notice how those Romans have slaves and stuff. And they kill them and rape them like it's nothing.
Grow some perspective. A vast majority of people won't extrapolate the actions of one Syrian to the Syrian people of 2100 years later. And those who do are imbeciles and if they don't get the wrong ideas out of this show, they'll get the wrong ideas elsewhere and they can't be helped.

I swear people need to just chill out sometimes. The main villains in this series are still Roman. Does that mean this whole show is hating on Italians now?

The Lord of the Rings and their symbolic hatred of Muslims is more offensive than the fact a single villain in this series hapens to be a Syrian.
Or have you forgotten that one of Spartacus' own men is also Syrian and he's a good guy?
I swear people need to just chill out sometimes. The main villains in this series are still Roman. Does that mean this whole show is hating on Italians now?
On a completely unrelated note, I never noticed LOTR presenting any symbolic hatred of Muslims. Can you elaborate?
In LOTR theres some symbolism, where the heroes and their story has a lot of christian influence and the bad guys that are recruited by Sauron and take part in the battle for minas tirith are "dark skinned men from the east, riding beasts and using curved swords" (scimitars are of arab origin and are curved). Most of it subtle, but still there.
Arabish music is quite good for ancient/medieval battle scenes though. Probably cause of history between west. To west I guess it does depict a certain theme.
Civ4 warlord expansion had an arabic love song as their opening menu theme. A love song for expansion all about adding depth to war in middle age period. Lol.

Okay, I have not read the historical gladiator / spartacus books. But isn't it a little weird/shady that the Syrian Ashur is being the only guy who betrays everyone ? He is the only one to kill children and women, he is the evilest by far, we could easily have empathy towards the romans compared to Ashur. Any correlation with the actual war ? I think it's pretty clear though ... Not to mention the oriental ("arab"-ish) music during every single violent bloody fights ... I havn't even analyzed it much more but it's already blattant propaganda imo. Thoughts?
They've always mentioned Ashur being Syrian....now your bringing it up because Syria's getting negative press in the news. Ashur's been Syrian way before this. If Syria wasn't in the news you wouldn't care at all. Moral of the story...stop looking to be offended when there's nothing to be offended about.

You must have missed the part where Spartacus and his gladiators brought down the arena in Capua and entire sections of Romans, women included, were falling to their deaths.
They probably killed more innocents in that scene than Ashur has in his life.
And what about Batiatus and Barca in season 1? They killed that one guy's children (forget his name, but he had the hit put out on Batiatus because he didn't pay him back his debts).

More than a handful of people burned to their death in the arena. Roman citizen.
Another great episode. The way it ended was especially satisfying, all those duplicitous romans scheming, and Gannicus basically gave a big fuck you to all of them. The only part that seemed weird was the new guy trying to rape Crixus' girl, I mean cmon dude, you just arrived a day ago and you are going to rape one of the leaders girlfriend? I doubt anyone is really that stupid.

Yeah, I wasn't expecting him to do that at all. I figured they'd end up getting along with that guy because he was being somewhat friendly to Oenomaus. I guess he can't blame it on the alcohol because his face got chopped off LOL.

Compare the geography of middle earth with that of Europe with the Shire being located where England might have been. Take note of the regions of origin of the evil and good men.
The use of the words "dark" and "light" when describing the people.
Not that I myself hold resentment towards Tolkein at all, in fact I think most of these accusations are overblown, but they are more offensive than any sort of racial accusation you can come to about Spartacus.
No way there is only 3 episodes left, its just starting to get so awesome T_T. Guess there will be a season 3, but don't wanna wait a year for it blah.
ohhhh fucking shit that was CRAZY oh my god oh my god. Gannicus murdered a bunch of elite roman guards and took Illythia hostage holy hell I did NOT see that one coming. This season has just been playing out superbly, I think it might rate over Blood and Sand when all is said and done, even in Andy's absence. Andy's rendition of Spartacus was more that of a moody loner, I honestly can't imagine him in this sort of forceful/commanding role, new guy is stepping up to the plate.
I loved the Germans. It was kind funny how Spartacus was bitching about how they were unruly and they rioted the 2nd night they were with him. Big German guy was insanely jacked, like semi-pro bodybuilder in the offseason looking.
Glaber is such a monster. I really wanted to like the guy, but not anymore! Now I'm almost rooting for Illythia/Lucretia.

Because the Starz network aims TV shows at republicans who like sex on television?
Are you serious? There are archtypes used here in a very general Jungian sense, in order to create a balance in the cast. This is a very popular (and proven to be powerful) application of psychology to writing, used in everything from Westerns, Sci-fi, Chinese Kung-fu movies, periodical dramas, etc. This is no more cynical than when it was done on every Star Trek series (Klingons were obviously part of the US propaganda machine against Africans! Romulans represent the communist threat). Do not see evil where it is plain cynicism and a standard formula for how to build a cast. So, they chose one (out of many) villains to be Syrian. Far worse than him are the Romans (Batiatus, Glabber), who murder, rape, pillage, and enslave - without any moral qualms. Is this propaganda against Italians? Is Lucretia any less treasonous than Ashur? She betrayed her husband who would give everything up for her; Ashur does what he does to survive. Ashur has never had allies, was despised by all - especially those he admired most. So he serves with all his capabilities, because what else can a slave do? He was never rewarded for anything else, no matter how hard he tried or how much he wanted.
As to the "eastern" music, that was the music at Roman times. There was no "western" music - the western music theory was not yet invented (nearly a thousand years off from the point you could actually differentiate "east" and "west" that way), and the influence of the east (especially Egypt) on Roman culture was massive. If anything, they should get points for at least somewhat trying to remain authentic to the music of the region at the time.
You are looking for racism and US "propaganda" so much that you are losing the context. This shows more about your bias than that of the show.
OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The episode started out rather slow but HOLY FUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

i still cant figure out why lucretia wants to kill glabber so bad... i can't connect the dots to how that will have any huge benefit for her except that illithya may be put in some authority at that point... as is illithya wouldn't stab her in the back lol
I don't like her face. She looks like she's 5 years old. Her body is OKish, not that great. Overall the hottest actress is Spartacus's gf (can't remember her name).
Really excellent episode. The ending was really well done. Can't wait to see how it all turns out.

Ashur's power over her comes from Glaber. Remove Glaber and Ashur is again just another slave to kill.

I thought it was pretty clear... he's a ruthless dick who kills a lot of people with little justification. He's doing nearly as much damage as spartacus and spartacus will stop bothering the romans once Glaber is dead since (she thinks) all he cares about is avenging his wife.

I also think the new spartacus is doing a great job too, I couldn't see Andy being as much of a leader as the current one is

I noticed this too. His entire demeanor has changed a lot since his gladiatorial days. Now he's relatively reserved, moody, and contemplative. Almost like the season 1 portrayal of Spartacus was.
I just don't like the new spartacus. He has the voice of a good leading role, but not the rest.
He lack the violence and the sheer power Andy had while playing Spartacus. Now the leading role just feel like a handsome leader while he was more like a raw beast who want revenge above anything else.
I was kind of hoping for the new jacked dude to stay and be a valuable asset. Him getting his face chopped off works as well, I fucking lol'ed when I saw it.

yeah, shes by far the prettiest of the main girls, i dont really mind the new spartacus, obviously he lacks the presence of the other actor, however he talks and looks just like him. on a side note some of the cgi is so rushed in this series.

Agreed.
Calling any of the women on the show (the new Nayviah included) anything less than "hot" is just stupid. If anyone saw them in real life they'd be drooling. Hell even Gannicus's prostitute was hot as hell.
The only reason any of the actresses even look remotely flawed is because we're comparing them to each other.
What do you guyz think happened to Illythias? Is she dead or does Gannickus Raped her or will she become a slave of the spartacus group? I can't wait to see the future of that bitch hehe

#1 Gannicus is about as rape-inclined as Ashur is loyal #2 Enslaving Illythias goes against everything Spartacus is working towards #3 You sound too young to be watching this show
Illythia will just be a prisoner for a while and probably get offered in some exchange for one of Spartacus' group who gets captured snooping in Neapolis/hunting.

Gannicus is probably against rape it is true..I was just saying the possibilities. For Spartacus...Enslaving Illythias the one woman who fucked with him against his will and who is the wife of his worst enemy...I think he could make an exception for her.
About my age im 21 almost 22 so no I am not. My english might be poor since im a french canadian. If it is for my language...well she is with no doubt a bitch and she derserved to be raped for torturing this guy on the previous episodes, for fucking with spartacus (with that mask), and for everything else anyway.
Hostage to be used as bargaining chip or set free assuming she was able to explain her situation to Gannicus.
Was a good episode, hope the conflict between Cryxus and err that wolf brother (name?) gets resolved over the fact that he intervened to protect his woman. Seems early for a direct confrontation between Glabor and Spartacus, neither has much of an army.
Makes me sad that there's only 3 episodes left...!
Illythias attitude changed a LOT since she lost the protection of her father and her station and life are no longer insured. I expect some form of redemption from her.

Also, at the beginning of my sentence, I said I would laugh so hard...it is just normal that I add hehe or lol at the end...Anyway, If I speak write english poorly, blame yourselves since I learned most of my english online on forums and video games ^^.
Anyway can we get back to Spartacus vengeance conversation? I love the show and this is why I am here. To read others peoples thoughts and opinion. I think Illythias deserves to be enslaved and treated like she treated every slave because she was one of the worst in this show. Even Glabber is better in my respect since he, at least , gave some respect to Ashur that is a slave (even tho he is not the most respectful character).
Can you guys stop fucking crying about his bad writing and focus on discussing the show instead? Just because English is your main language or you're good at it doesn't mean that everybody else are, how fucking dumb are you if you complain about such a thing as someone writing "hehe" at the end of every sentence? Completely ridicolous hehe.

that's what she said to Gannacus, but... there's always other motives involved and some tricky plot that has yet to unfold.

I meant that it was too obvious...the point of special effect is to make the audience believe it is real...It was so horribly obviously made that it got me a bit disappointed because I could see it was totally fake.

ehm ofcourse they used a computer, you expect them to use a human body and cut the face of it straight off and let the brain fall out? t.t...
Not sure if serious. How do you think they made all this stuff in splatter movies etc. before CGI was around?
No, please enlighten me. I don't see how it's relevant though since CGI IS around and it's obvious that they will use a computer for it.

I think the scene was done pretty decent considering it's a TV series. What bothered me more was in the arena collapsing episode. The speed in which the stands were collapsing was WAY to fast. That could have easily be avoided as the whole background in arena is pretty much a green screen.
Movies/series nowadays are sooo much more gore then they were back in the day. Its just that people got accustomed to the sheer amount of gore in movies/series where they grew such a thick skin that things like that face off scene does not even phase them in the slightest. And agian, do remember it's a TV series so you can't expect the high end special effects due to budget restrictions! That said....
Sam Raimi is the one mostly responsible for all the "gore" scenes in Spartacus series and he was a fuckin' pioneer producer in horror genre in the 70'/ 80'. Just sayin

It was made by a computer..... I thought it was real, now I am disappointed
Or maybe, suddenly, Spartacus story match up with that of Rome, turns out it was a prequel to everything Rome showed us and it becomes.. a single serie!!!
didnt really like the the way the show turned, Gannicus has always been portrayed as such a neutral character not really having any ideals or goals, was just there for himself then out of nowhere he decides to kidnap Glabor's wife taking a huge risk fighting all those guards, just doesnt really make sense to me, even if he wanted to side with Spartacus kidnapping part just doesnt seem plausible for his character

his favourite whore got crucified by the same man who tried to buy his freedom with his freedom/rudus. glabber made it pretty clear neutrality was no longer an option

I get that it would be something that would drive him to join the side and cause of Spartacus, but just feel its way too big of a leap from not caring to just a couple days prior to doing something weird like attacking 10 guards and kidnapping Glabor's wife meh really didnt like that plot twist at all.
Pretty good episode. Shit is getting real. The flashback part where Ashur and his crew are fucking people up at the brothel hoping to get info out of them was pretty depressing. Can't wait for that MFer to get what's coming to him.
See, this is what separates good writing from garbage, like Sons of Anarchy. Good writing assumes characters will maintain the same level of intelligence. Good writing accepts you don't keep fucking important secrets from your friends and lovers, you don't betray your friends over someone you met 5 minutes ago, and that you act logically. Spartacus has this shit (so does Justified if anyone in this thread wants another very good show to follow), many other modern shows don't, and it is false drama aimed at idiots.
The writers are awesome for this show, they have a mediocre group of actors but manage to create one of the best shows on tv. This should serve as an example to other shows.
another amazing episode glad to see them doing justice with this series just like season one it took a couple episode to get going but once it does daaaaaaaaaaaanm thats good shit
Crixus always gets his ass handed to him nowadays. I know his bitch weighs him down but he should be more like a badass champion, at least when Naevia's not around.

The Egyptian guy is pretty hardcore though taking all those arrows. I'd guess they're setting it up for another showdown between the two. Ashur's hit sqaud is pretty cool--it should be an epic eventual showdown.
Sigh... So sick of the cliched: "But if we kill her, we'll be no better than them!" Heroism speech bullshit. The entire episode was boring and it's like they threw in the final fight just to save it (like Savage Garden's producers telling them to write another Truly Madly Deeply for their sophomore album at the last minute).
Edit: The below post just reminded me... Didn't Illythia kill a gladiator right in front of Crixus at the party when they were captured (after rescuing Navia from the mines)? If Crixus cared for his fellow gladiators as much as his cock cares for Navia's thighes then perhaps he would have had sterner opinions regarding Illythia's fate.
The child being spartacus's is sooo dumb...I wish they killed her anyway or at least tortured her like cutting a arm off or anything. This whiny pretentious little bitch is so annoying and has done so much worst. Anyway...She surely didnt deserve to live and that crap about being better than the romans is dumb. But whatever...and god Crixus needs to stand up and start to be a badass again...He is supposed to be stronger than spartacus
Yet another good episode, I'm really starting to like the actual plot ^_^ I only have one concern.. Am I the only one that feels like the women of Battiatus Ludus are taking over? Seippia must be pretty fucking pissed now that she found out what Lucritia told her, and obviously Lucritia wants Ashur dead, and Illythia must be pretty furious after Glabba stood her up like that.. I foresee some of the women going full retard and killing at a bare minimum some guards ^_^

Some of you guys are not good philosophers. Letting her go was the right choice. He made her realise that when her so called family and friends leave her to tha fate, those so called beasts did show mercy and realised that they don't kill just for the sake of killing. Spartacus was wise enough to realise the reasoning behind all this shit after his first temper goes away.
When Ilythia goes back (at least if she does) she won't be the same(she will always remember the last whispering of Spartacus), if Glaber don't kill her(which will not be easy without looking like a wife and child killer to the people), she will mess his world and plans up intentionally or not. This way the Glaber will be proven to be the bad man once again and people with concious deeply take side against him even if they don't show it directly.
So all these decisions were made to help the cause. And on the side note maybe the whole child thing helped him to look more reasonably to the situation.
guys, I'm pretty sure Spartacus WAS GOING TO KILL HER, but then told her that it would balance NOTHING, as she amounts to piss and shit to Glabber, where Spartacus' wife was EVERYTHING. Thus, killing her would be a pointless act of slaughter. He is inflicting a much deeper wound by letting her know she is worthless, and releasing her back to the twisted life she leads, which will cause havoc for Glabber when she gets back (assuming Sepia doesn't kill his ass first)
but yes, Crixis got pwnd by the Egyptian. I recall him fighting the new trainees while recovering in Blood and Sands and complaining "SEND ME A MAN!". We don't have that blood thirsty champion anymore, he's just trying to train his woman and bring her back to life (which it seems he is doing), but meanwhile, has been absent proper fighting challenge. Spartacus' and Crixis' girls just need to train together now, so Crixis can start whipping Oanemaeus back into shape ^_^
I guess nobody was surprised about Illythia's baby. It was pretty obvious from the very start of this season, when she was having a bath and had her first flashback of said night.

Yeah, it was very convenient on the part of the writers to ignore Crixus' investment in the Illythia situation. He should have been fucking pissed for all the torture/killing his homeboy.
I don't think the final decision was so much "if we kill her we'll be no better than them", but rather that Illythia was clearly meaningless to Glaber anyway so who gives a fuck. Still Crixus should have interjected with the fact that she's a GDB and a bad human being and they should just go ahead and get rid of her regardless of what value she has to Glaber.
The Egyptian guy is amazing, I hope there will be more epic fights with him Glaber is so evil and I feel sorry for Illythia :/ Spartacus Vengeance is one of the best series I have ever seen, so far not a single episode disappointed me
Great episode, although the massacre at the brothel :O Where will we get our minute of socially acceptable porn? -.-
That said, the woman still live :/ Though, hearing Spartacus says what he said was epic. I hope she gets back safely to Rome or Capua and make life hard on Glabber

Why would you feel sorry for Ilythia? If she wasn't a scandalous whore who planned to abort her baby and leave glabber for Varinius(spelling is wrong im sure) Then she wouldn't have been in that position to begin with, and glabber wouldn't be doing what his doing right now. She deserves to die, end of story. Hope she does, even though I'm a huge fan of her rack when she is not pregnant.....MMMMMMomnomnomnom.

No one knew that she slept with the son, therefore spartacus doesn't know she was the root of varo's death.

I was referring to the party torture scene a few episodes back, and saying if Crixuses cared as much about the suffering of his fellow gladiators as he does for Navia, then he should be much angrier. Not so though, as the man thinks only with his cock.

She has done so much worst...Just remember when she tortured that guy a couple episodes back...I dont understand how you could possibly believe she doesnt deserve to get an arm cut off...
really love the series, however last episode left me somewhat confused;
Eventually some roman woman would need to be the one giving spartacus son birth, but ilythia has been on the bad side for so long, trying to get spartacus killed multiple times, killing his best friend, betraying her man and being a stupid bitch all over... not the most obvious choice as the one getting spartacus his son IMO.
then I dont quite understand why someone, with a free choice in any weapon combination he wants, would stick with double daggers... and then bash people with double swords and all.
Also people dont seem to give a shit about arrows in this series, the one shot by spartacus girl was an instant oneshot, but the last episode had like the daggerdude taking three and not giving a shit, running right in them. glabber getting hit and just getting it out, to end up with a very minor wound later that day.

that blonde bitch took an arrow through her sternum right below her neck. The egyptian took arrows to "meaty" parts of his body (thigh, arm, etc). Glabber got hit in his breast which was covered in armor. The gladiators get cut and slashed all through their fights in the arena, I think the scene with the egyptian was just to show us that he can take a fucking beating like the gladiators can and that someone may actually pose a decent fight against them, cuz right now it looks like if spartacus and crew got a geological fighting advantage that they could kill an infinite amount of roman soldiers

double daggers is the alternate of the dimachareus form or w/e u can have 2 swords or 2 daggers

massive history fail right there
ya my bad lol, I think atleast the first part is true?
Romans used some type of composite bow. It wasn't shit, but it was nothing like for instance the mongol bow (of over a thousand years later though) but most importantly an actual bow (any bow) could never have been fully drawn by a woman.
I like how they portray gratuitous public fucking/orgies and pass it off as being "authentic to the period"! That's one hell of an excuse to over saturate the series with sex! As far as we know about the Romans, and we do know quite a bit, public fucking was frowned upon in a manner not unlike today.
To be honest though, I couldn't give two shits about how accurate the series is to how the historical Romans lived and conducted themselves. Frankly, I love seeing such a wonderful abundance of oiled up female mammary glands. Makes me want to latch onto them and start suckling like a thirsty infant.
There are other rather good and nuanced parts of the series such as certain character interactions/developments and Machiavellian scheming of the highest order. But lets face the facts, the show has been shored up by these two pillars of the basic Hollywood formula for success: lots of sex and lots of violence.
My eyes eagerly await to see the blood flowing, the mammary glands jiggling, and specifically, what has become of Lucy Lawless' character! When I saw her topless for the first time the only thing I could think of was being a young lad at my neighbors house watching Xena: Warrior Princess and praying to a series of pagan deities that her jugs would burst forth from their confines for all to see. Its taken many years but it finally happened, not to mention with the added bonus of some girl on girl action!

No, she doesn't. But letting her go so she can do more bad stuff was fucking bad.
Everyone should be given a chance to repent if that is within your power. But they should have kept here with them and let her live in same conditions they did. Should could have also been a good hostage and if they ever go surrounded to be killed she would share their fate.
Agreed Hanna Mangan Lawrence and Léa Seyroux do look alike can be hard to tell the difference especially when intoxicated hah. Six years difference in age though, in my opinion Hanna looks better off screen.
<3
I can't say I was shocked when the bitch says its Spartacus's in her womb. I do somewhat agree with letting her go though. Once she makes it back to her old place her life will be shit and Glaber's too. Speaking of Glaber.. what is Seppa going to do??? look at the eyes!! So evil I love it.

Touché.... Haven't actually watched since Season 1, but I guess that's bad enough I really wanna see a ''rematch'' between Ashur's gang and Spartacus crew, would be awesome ^_^
also @ everyone bitching about gannacus becoming so "non-side-choosing", did you not hear him whisper into his girlfriend's ear that he wanted her to escape with him and leave Rome? Then the next day he found her crucified, by whom? Glabber's men no doubt. Glabber took Gannacus' woman, thus his reaction was quite suitable.
As soon as she was preggo the whole its spartacus' child twist was left open. Iirc I even called it in this thread while ago.
Its kinda silly that she's let go. This was 2000 yrs ago with 2000 yr old morals. Peoples lives are shit. what public orgies? they have brothels where people are having orgies and there is a lot of sex but its not like its out in the streets... and we do know that sex was pretty prevalent during that time... in fact it was common for men in power to have slave boys/girls who they'd just have sex with whenever they wanted...

I find it funny how the whore houses are where a lot of the action occurs. Everytime they show a scene in there, I'm like "somethings about to go down"
I'm currently on Episode 7, been delaying watching this season. Superb so far, with only a few minor nuances. Excessive Slo-Mo fighting and CGI scenes which have replaced what was once great fighting scenes, as well as unnecessary gore everywhere moreso than in any other previous seasons is odd and becoming annoying.
Current Spartacus does well, but still pales in comparison to the epicness of Andy Whitfield, not a big deal. New actor for Naevia is fine too, just not satisfied with how they chose to portray her as a suicidal PTS disorder being.

agreed. Then again, what would any woman really be like after being in the mines? It may be an accurate portrayal, and the fact that the situation irks us in that way gives us a flavor of what Crixus might be going through. Great job by the writers imo.
It's like I find myself disgusted with almost every Ashur scene, then I remember it's just a show and that they are doing an amazing job making me hate an antagonist.

He starts out as an antagonist and fit the role so well that it's almost uncomfortable seeing him as a true good guy. Gannicus has kind of taken over his role this season as the badass that you don't know if you can trust.
Give it a little while, Crixus' transformation will eventually grow on you as those characters did for me also.

Off course not...this is what they want to do...So it feels right that he is the commander of the army?!

Didn't you guys know, Main Characters always get +100 all stats at the start of the game.

Man the last half of the episode was pretty intense. Especially that Sepia part, and how they shot that sequence, in slow mo and everything at that angle. Had me squirming a bit, even though there has been worse stuff shown. Definitely was not prepared for that.
Also, Crixus is Neo from the matrix, Oenamaus is now a badass pirate gladiator, and Ilithiya and Glabber are truly monsters.
Just rewatched the last 15 minutes, it was just that good. This season keeps going from strength to strength, no idea how they'll top it for the finale.

According to the wiki page there are another episode to go.
Indeed there is.
Knowing how good Kill Them All was in Season 1, and how good this last episode was leaves me with high expectations for the finale. I don't think I'm going to be disappointed.
When Spartacus announced the last showmatch, the fight between the "commanders" I got nerdchills all over my body lol. The fight itself was pretty poor but overall this episode is freaking EPIC.
Rome dispatched militia under the command of praetor Gaius Claudius Glaber, which besieged the slaves on the mountain, hoping that starvation would force the slaves to surrender. They were surprised when Spartacus had ropes made from vines, climbed down the cliff side of the volcano with his men and attacked the unfortified Roman camp in the rear, killing most of them.[20] The slaves also defeated a second expedition, nearly capturing the praetor commander, killing his lieutenants and seizing the military equipment.[21] With these successes, more and more slaves flocked to the Spartacan forces, as did "many of the herdsmen and shepherds of the region", swelling their ranks to some 70,000.[22]
Hold your butts because it's about to get intense.

It's so weird seeing him lose EVERY SINGLE TIME after the last two seasons. Completely different character.
Great episode.
huh? Crixus and Agron met what looked like at least 100 soldiers in the forest... Crixus must have slain dozens of people and not lost any fight. This would be the first episode of the season that Crixus is back in rage mode and fucking shit up. 46:35 to be exact where he is screaming in blood lust as he did in Blood and Sands
I like how once the wall was broken down the Egyptian walks in first and right up to Oeanemaeous (sp lol) cuz he's the biggest guy. I think the writers were indicating that he hasn't fully healed yet, otherwise he would have been on the front line with Spartacus/Crixus in the forest. Dat egyptian fucked his eye up tho damn

Guess it's still a little early for me to talk but I'm about to start episode 4. Might be that I'm not comfortable with the new Spartacus yet. The original actor was much better.

The season REALLY picks up at episode 5. the most recent episode 9 just upped the stakes even further.

Did anyone else find it weird how they handled the tension between the rebels?
Spartacus gives them some booze, makes them fight with each other and suddenly they're all best friends forever like it's a some magic trick. They're gladiators and warriors so one fistfight shouldn't mean shit to them. And that solves things between Oenomaus and Gannicus? Agron and Crixus are friends now too? After building up this tension all season long? fuck.
awesome episode, i think this season is as good as previous too, yeah new Spartacus is different, but that is not bad thing Egyptian is sick, but I doubt he would last long in normal battle as his daggers are too short last episode will legen ... wait for it ...

It is almost like a magic trick man. Fighting beside or with someone really changes how you think of them, it's something primal. At least that's how it has been with me having been in one or two fights myself.

The same magic trick fight club uses. it really does change things unless you are deeply hateful or in feeling of revenge to the opponent.
the cliche choice would have been for them to save eachothers life and then forgive, but that really wouldn't work because they're too proud and honorable.
i don't think oenomaus has forgiven gannicus quite yet... he just doesn't loathe him
The ultimate finale next episode right? Oh I cant wait, season 1's finale was wrapping up a much smaller story-line in terms of scale and epic-ness. This final should be awesome...
I've come to love Glabbor (spelling?) in a weird way, he's so ruthless and determined its admirable and awesome. There has to be an epic sword fight with him and Spartacus to wrap it all up, I'm talking a final fight like the one in Gladiator, now that shit had me in tears.
What's the deal with Illythia and Lucretia? Are they on the same side? Did Illythia backstab Lucretia with her little move? Did they plot it together? Ahhhh so much suspense!!
Good Fucking God that last episode was intense. Thought it was all over, then some huge catapults start firing and everything goes to pot. This season started out a bit odd, but they've really got into their stride and I can't wait for the finale!

What you both need to remember is that she did it because she knew she'd regain Glabbor as an ally, and he is certainly far more powerful than Lucretia. But I don't know whether Illythia did backstab Lucretia or not... just saying its entirely possible.
I get the feeling that Lucretia knows all about it though and that they planned it from the start. She or Illythia could of murdered Glabbor but no, she almost forced that dagger into her hand.
Spartacus, trapped on the mountain, is going to be besieged by Glaber. Spartacus, trapped, makes ropes from vines and rappels down to the bottom of the mountain and slaughters Glaber's entire army. Historically speaking, nobody knows whether Glaber dies or not, but either way, expect epic epic times :D
Amazing episode, definitely my favorite of the season, definitely could have been the season finale.... Oh and just wondering, is there at least another season???
Only thing that slightly ruined the episode was how Varinius dies Illythia and Glabber are just saying how they will get vengeance on him and then all of a sudden he randomly dies, albeit in epic fashion

I wouldn't call it random. Glaber's force starts bombarding the temple *knowing* that Verinius is inside. I thought it was pretty deliberate.
My real question was how the fuck they got catapults there so quickly. They'd have to be disassembled, carried through the woods in pieces, re-assembled on the spot, etc etc. You can't just drag catapults through a freakin' forest.

Uh, how do you guys think Illythia knew about Seppia's plot to kill him? Lucretia, aka the girl who gave Seppia the idea, told her about it so she could stop it.
Trust me.. at the end of the finale... Lucretia and Illythia will have the last laughs. Lucretia is trying to rid herself of Ashur, and Illythia is trying to rid herself of Glaber.

This. I think that Glaber and Asher are both in trouble. Asher is a near certainty, Glaber is a tossup.... I just wouldnt trust anything Illythia says but maybe she does want an alliance

Also I still wish Glabber would have looked Verinius in the eyes and killed him

Pretty sure Glaber is going to die considering next season they got Crassus coming down. I do wish they let Ashur live though, he's the best bad guy on the show in my opinion.

His character is designed to draw some sympathy from the viewers.
He's really in a lot of ways the same guy Spartacus is. He's just a slave, trying to make his way through the world. It just so happens that he does it through cunning and deceit while Spartacus does it through violence as well as leadership
It's all a matter of perspective. One of the things i like about this show is that for each of the characters in it, you can come up with a reason for liking or not liking them. It makes them feel human.
Pretty sure Illythia used Lucretia to set up the assassination then stopped it to resecure glabber. Lucretia definitely wanted glabber, and through him ashur, out of the way.

I definitely agree with this, Lucretia has nothing to gain through saving Glabber and alot to gain through killing him
Nah, I still think Lucretia and Illythia hatched this plan together. To me it was even pretty obvious that this was going to happen. Remember they never said they want Glabber dead when they were talking to each other. They always said things like "if saying please doesn't work, I want blood". Never mentioned his name. That's how it always is with those series

Hold the boat... Watch Gods of the Arena first, It's prequel of S01 and the order which the TV series was released in. Soo.. S01 Blood and Sand -> S00 Gods of the Arena -> S02 Vengeance.
After all this setup at this point, it would be sad if Illythia backstabbed Lucretia to save Glabber, yet it WOULD be in her character to do such a thing. She is a vile shrewd, I've wanted her out of the show for a long time.
Glabber dying gives an immediate return for Lucretia (Asher has no power now) -- So that is a point in favor of betrayal. Although if Glabber dies, that loses the possibility of revenge against Spartacus and Crixus (whom Lucretia hates). Still a tossup, I doubt she would betray Lucetria, I'd rather have it the other way around for once. Either way, lots of uncertainty makes for a good finale!

Just watched all of the first and second season in like, a week. Unfortunately, me being a classics major and reading a fair bit about the Third Servile War kinda spoils the show a bit but it's still extremely awesome. This is wrong. Lucretia is kind of screwed if Glaber dies. If he does, Ashur has free reign to do as he pleases with her. Lucretia needs rid of Ashur, not Glaber. Glaber has her set up nicely. Illythia needs Glaber gone for what he did to her. She cares nothing about Ashur.
I think Ashur will live and Glaber will die though.
I am loving this second season almost as much as the first season.
I think that the actor who replaced spartacus from season 1 is a little bit worse (IMO) so that is probably the main downside but despite this I am still enjoying this season a lot and am hooked again! Upto ep9 right now and very excited and things are getting VERY interesting! Get into it, because its still really good.

Nope, Ashur only has Glaber's word at this point on condition of Spartacus' capture. If Glaber dies, Ashur will remain a slave and Lucretia remains safe as Illythia's confidante.
Next episode better be good. Disappointed with the fightlast episode. You can feel the tv small budgetness. Maybe they saved it all for last or they can whip some cgi voodoo magic. This is what I miss the most in season 1 along with old protagonist. Season 1 worked well because they only had to portray few ppl battling on arena for the most part.

I think he will die too. Historically, he (probably) didn't die in this battle, but he did die early in the rebellion, and it'd be more epic than him dying on a random raid, which seems to be what most likely happened

I do agree on the Ashur living part.
Gods of the Arena wasn't a season of Spartacus, it was it's own mini-series, set in the same place.
Main bad thing about this season is quality of the fights, not only their duration but also overuse of slow-motion.Can't believe they got so much worse compared to previous season, i mean everyone responsible for them is still there and yet they suck I hope we will have some old quality combats back in season finale, and in next one with Julius Caesar chasing Spartacus around heh.
Not an amazing season finale but still pretty good. Just the way some of the main cast dies... was kinda meh, although the cliff part at the end was surprising. The producers definitely don't like newborn children lol. Bring on Julius Caesar and season 3!
A very satisfying finale. I did NOT see Lucretia's actions coming... that was totally out of left field. I was predicting Illythia miscarries and she and Lucretia cry and have some girl sympathy time and its all tragic and stuff... boy was I wrong on that one. I mean Illythia did a lot for Lucretia and even took care of the Ashur issue when she was asked. I think it was very reasonable for them to have finally made up their differences and moved forward.
I love how the show writers made you think Lucretia was insane, then that she was just pretending to be insane and wanted revenge, but then that she wasn't insane and was willing to forgive Illythia and move on, but all along it turned out she actually was insane and pretending not to be crazy the whole fucking time.
I wasn't huge on Ashur's demise, I thought the Egyptian turning on him would have been more fitting. It was alright I guess, just hard for me to suspend disbelief on Navea actually doing anything. I think the new Spartacus did exceptionally well, but new Navea did NOT capture the dramatic impact of the old one. Just felt contrived and whiney rather than the tortured, dark, and vengeful thing they were going for.
Overall it was a pretty good finale and a very good season. Nothing topped the episode where the gang attacks the arena though.

+1, Rip. I nearly shed a tear. Those two things will be missed next year.
I thought they really outdid themselves with cinematography and atmosphere this episode. The scene at the old Ludus with Illythia and Lucretia... just the way it was lit and filmed made it so chilling and dark.
will there be a season 4? ive read the wikipedia article about spartacus and it hasent happened what i read yet. time to wait for game of thrones! epic weekend!
hahahahaha, most TV shows you would expect like one shocking main character death in a season finale at best. Here, like half of the main characters died in 50 minutes. amazing tv

I said out loud "Oh no" 2 minutes in for obvious reasons.
Great episode though, a fitting end to the season a lot of the foreshadowing of the first few episodes finally comes to fruition specifically regarding Oenimaous and Lucretia.
Season started off as non-interesting to waiting non-patiently for the next episode. They pulled it off well. Hope this Spartacus lasts for the next season tho
Here's hoping whenever spartacus' death is it will be as epic as the losing final battle in 300. I'm actually tempted to rewatch all of the first season because of this, such a good show!
epic finale is epic, great scene when Oenomaus called Gannicus "brother" again but I will also miss Egyptian he was such a scary fighter by the way at the end Gannicus finally understood their cause

I kinda hoped Ashur would made it through the season and into the next one. It will be VERY hard to replace Batiatus and Ashur. They were the main villains and perhaps the best chars in the series.
Season started off kinda snoozy but ended with a couple of very good/ epic episodes. It will be a pain to wait another year for S03 .

That last episode gave me nerdchills just like the last one from blood and sand, holy moly. So good. Now I want more, god damn it, Game of Thrones will have to do until then
Well, he is right, that was a fitting conclusion to the whole lucretia/illithyia arc. Glad to see shows that have the courage to say there is no story here and kill off a character rather than just bring it back because the actor is popular.
HOLY SHIT someone give Ray Myzuka and the folks at Bioware the number for the STARZ writing crew. Fucking sweet season/archs/everything closure and wrap-up.
Worst season so far,way to cheesy and it's quality of the fights was way below previous ones.Ill probably watch next one with Caesar chasing Spartacus around but i don't think ill enjoy it fully without such characters as Ashur and Onayemous (RIP).
I am so annoyed by Naeva in season 2. In the first season she was really interesting, she was good looking and the actress was good. Now all Naeva does is put Crixus in the SHITTIEST spots possible. It's insane how bad the character is now. "el oh el, i'm a women and I'm going to go and try to kill a dangerous guy all by myself and possibly break the heart of the man that loves me". Seriously what a dumbass, Naeva is terrible this season. /endrant
Um I guess the finale was pretty good aside from that. I don't think Ilythia is dead yet though... she's out for blood though. Nice solid season though.
Anyway, now that I'm done with this great episode, going to watch MLP's new episode.
HOLY F*CK , Super epic nerd chills!! Lucretia was fucking creepy as hell on the last episode , awesome death and all. Kinda sucks that Ashur died though and by Naeva sword?!... zzz .Would be more epic if Naeva got crippled when Ashur slammed her booring ass unto the ground and that way we wouldnt be botherd with her (in my opinion)crap character. Awesome finale though, looking forward to next season!
I'm kind of dissappointed with the season. These storylines that was brought to an end in the finale was below par for me. The Lucretia one is decent though, especially as there has been signs throughout the season that she was insane all along. I don't like the Naevia "oh I'm gonna get stronk and kill a dude". She got pretty owned by a guy with a weakened arm, so the badassery afterwards was a little bit distasteful
I'm glad they wrapped up the main plot. It was closing in on it's expiration date (not that I had any doubts it would be wrapped up given the title of the season). Lets hope they bring in some good characters for season 3.
Disliked. It felt like reading a manga, all the pauses and slow motion fight scenes... Wouldn't call it action, more like a slide show of print screens. To all those who thought it was awesome, rewatch the finales of season one and two and then watch this one again. Also disliked the fact that Glaber and Spartacus' fight was so one-sided... Crappy compared to the old Spartacus vs Crixus or Gannicus vs Crixus fights.

What? Glaber is no warrior, it makes sense for him to get beat down fairly easily, if anything it would be stupid to have them appear as fighting equals. I did think season one had a better finale, and the final 3 episodes of season one were stronger than this seasons final 3. Still an excellent show though.

Correct me if I'm wrong as I generally fast forward past the talking scenes (especially when Lucretia and Illythia are gossiping like bitches trying to out socialise each other - ugh) - but isn't Glaber some dude with political aspirations? In which case he didn't come from privilege, and had to earn his way up the ranks. Presumably by kicking other Roman soldiers' asses and ending up as a decent commander.
I enjoyed episode five very much but the rest were just meh. The only episode I didn't enjoy in season one was when Spartacus was condemned to the pits.
Really interesting ending.. as many of you previously mentioned I rather disliked the way Ashur died.. :/ The new actor for Naevia is really not up for the role IMO. Other then that I thought that it was worthy of a finale, especially how they handled the whole ''Lucritia'' thing was pretty brilliant :D Also, seeing Gannicus finally realising what Spartacus was fighting for was rather epic, I've really come to like Gannicus, he's so crazy ^_ ^
Time to rewatch Blood and Sand & Gods of the Arena :D
T.T Ashur T.T He was one of my fav characters in the show, and to have he killed by Naevia? Ugh so disappointing. The Lucritia thing was fucking epic, loved how they tied all that up! RIP Oenomaus
Overall a great season IMO. Still not the biggest fan of the new Spartacus I think the actor playing Gannicus or even Crixus would better fit that role... but he has grown on my slightly. Looking forward to season 3

I got the sense that he WASN'T a decent commander. And this was because he didn't earn his way up the ranks. We learn from the very first episode that he became a Praetor thanks to connections through Illythia and her father. He was a nobody before.
Even if Glaber was a very good fighter in his younger days, we all saw how roman soldiers got thoroughly destroyed by the gladiators, and if you add up that Glaber had been a commander for quite a while and spent his days chatting/fucking/cursing/eating, he was expected to be demolished by an enraged Spartacus.

I like to think Naevia knew she couldn't beat Ashur so she purposefully feigned weakness to take advantage of Ashur's arrogance. It's subtly hinted earlier when Crixus tells Naevia there are other ways to kill than by brute force, which she replies with "I will learn them" if I recall correctly.
Great finish to the show, but my only gripe was the Lucretia/Ilythia storyline.
Whilst being a cool twist, it didn't really fit with any of the logic in the storyline and was a pretty convenient set of circumstances for it to happen. It's good they killed off a lot of characters though, as they probably wouldn't have much of a place in the story going forward.
It'll be interesting to see where they take the story now as pretty much all loose ends attached to the first two seasons have been settled.
Mira - She was my favorite character this season T_T. I was soooo sad when she took that ax to the tit (((((((. She is pretty much my ideal type of woman, and Spartacus couldn't even appreciate her fully due to rage... not much else to say here except D: I was all choked up when she died. Mira realized her and Sparty weren't going to work out, and she got her closure. Watching her interviews I actually really like her as a person too. Gonna check out some of her other shows. 6/5 for Mira! Now the German girl is the new hot chick... I think it's funny how they portray her so much differently in the final episode after Mira's passing.. much more somber (surely due to the situation), whereas before she was all barbaric.
Naevia - lots of people complaining about the new actor. Sure, I thought the old Naevia was hotter and played the "loving helpless woman" better, but could you really see that actor playing the new role as well as the new girl did? She had a REALLY tough role in this season, starting as a frail and depressed spirit who had her brains mixed up by rape, torture, and slavery, who then had to literally and mentally battle to regain her spirit. Sure, someone could have done a better job than her, but not the old Naevia IMO. Also, lots of people seem upset that she claimed Ashur's life... but I can't think of any other way. If I think back on all the nasty things Ashur has done throughout the 3 seasons, I actually completely see where he's coming from, and a lot of people deserved the will of Ashur being pushed on them (hi Lucretia), BUT Naevia was not one of them. On the flip side of that coin, Crixus treated Ashur like shit and Ashur owed Crixus that payment (which surely would be repaid in kind). Thus, nobody had greater claim on his life than she did, and I completely agree with the writers choice to have them fight, and was shedding tears of joy as she hacked his fucking head off. Naevia got her vengeance. This is also cool because it was like Naevia's "right-of-passage" as a warrior, so next season I'm sure she'll be one of the bad-asses
Ashur - he had it coming! Yea, he was the best protagonist probably EVER, but once Lucretia found Seppius' bracelet (which fell out of his treasure chest as he began to forcefully fuck her) it was game over for him. Even though Seppia's attempt on his life failed, it was inevitable that Ashur taking the bracelet would be revealed to Glabber, and thus cementing his death. I was actually starting to root for Ashur the last couple episodes in hopes that he would take over the ludus and train some badasses, BUT he had to die eventually. I also liked the fact that he was inducing torture on Lucretia, when she had been dishing it out all along up until now she finally gets to know what it feels like. One of the best parts of Ashur being on the opposing team is that he stood as brothers with Spartacus n crew and was able to provide insight into their plans where the romans failed (uncovering their plans to get Naevia from the mines, then seeing the mark of a slave as they were almost tricked into leaving). The Starz crew will be hard pressed to find some villains next season to replace him AND Glabber. 5/5 for Ashur
Glabber - Such awesome character progression with him this season! In Blood and Sands he just kind of seems like a pawn trying to make his way up the political ranks. The beginning of Vengeance he looked like a push-over and a pussy, but then reveals his inner beastly monster. That fuckin wicked smile and look of destruction in his eyes is so goddamn captivating and creepy at the same time. He did a fucking outstanding job! 5/5. Oh God in the final episode when his troops meet face to face with Sparty/Crixus/Gannicus/Agron, and Glabber screams "KILL THEM!!!" I got such chills
Crixus - A lot of people are also upset with Crixus being a pussy this season. Let me remind you that he used to fight for glory in the arena, now he fights for love. Anyone who has a problem with his character change probably hasn't ever felt love ripped from your arms, then to think it is hopeless, and then to gain her back again. Also, people forget that in Blood and Sands, Crixus was a fucking antagonist to Spartacus, arguably the MAIN ONE (maybe Batiatus). A lot of things change... why wouldn't their character? I think he did a fantastic job as an actor
Spartacus - It's weird... I don't like him, but I don't dislike him. He played his role, but.... Goddamnit RIP Andy. On the flip side, Andy's role as Sparty was always more reclusive, whereas the new one is a leader demanding respect. I have a feeling Andy would have been so much more badass as leader of a rebel army, but in a much different way and feel than the new main actor did. *sigh*
Oenomaus - What a badass! In the beginning of Veangence, goes to the pits to keep fighting until he dies. Ashur saves him right before death. Then, he is put in prison, tortured, and starved Then, he must fight against Gannacus in the arena, but the arena falls on him giving him more serious wounds. He has some time to heal from that ordeal, but not fully, and then he gets stabbed the the eye by the Egyptian FINALLY after all that he falls in battle.
Gannacus - One of the cool things about Oenomaus and Gannacus is that they both EARNED THEIR FREEDOM (by Roman law). They could both be free men right now, but chose not to. Gannacus always laughing, smiling, drinking booze, fucking bitches, and single-handedly slaying big packs of Roman soldiers, what's not to love?
Lucretia - Lucy Lawless... Just WOW
Illithya - I thought it interesting she was kept around... peering into the next season and noticing Markus Crassus will be involved is interesting since Illithya killed his cousin. I wonder if she still has the hand that Batiatus gave to Glaber as a gift? lol
Out of the gladiators, there's only Spartacus, Crixus, Gannacus, Agron, and the guy with the ax now, right?
If I don't count the things I disliked generally like their pompous manner of speaking with pseudo-roman/latin sentence structure at all times, everyone being a mastermind schemer who's plans work out 90% of the times and blood being spilled from buckets to the point it becomes comical, the season still felt much weaker than the first one. New actor did decently, but at the same time it wasn't enough since he's the one to command the presence which just wasn't there. Change of actors isn't a good thing either and I wasn't even a fan, and still it did remove credibility a bit, mainly Naevia. Intrigue was very lacking for me, everything felt too predictable except 2 cases in whole season. Basically, meh.

dude you gotta watch more than the first episode c'mon

The first episode of Blood & Sand is basically an April Fools. Really bad joke hiding a gem. Almost every Spartacus fan will tell u that it's craptastic, and every one of them will tell you that the jump in quality increases exponentially after a few episodes.
The final episode was about as good as it could have been. There were so many characters that I did not want to die, but they managed to kill of the persons that needed to die for the progression of the story.
Still sad about the death of Ashur, he was a great character.
On April 05 2012 16:56 Redox wrote: ^ Ok maybe I will give it another try then. But was already kinda hard to sit through that one.
Indeed it was. I had a hard time believing that the director of the Spider-Man trilogy had a hand in the series while watching that episode. I usually just recommend people start with Ep 2 since it summarizes Ep1 at the beginning and you save 1 hour of pain to boot.
I think it's at 4th or 5th ep that people in general say that it really starts to pick up. It was 4th for me. Ironically Spartacus: Vengeance also took a bit of time to find its footing. All in all, I hope you do give it another shot. Aside from the surprising increase in quality after the beginning, the B&S finale is in a class of its own.
the last 2 episodes were better, but overall season 3 was disapoiting. No real naevia, no real spartacus, too little surprises, nothing that draged me in. In season 1 the plot was way more twisted and I liked that the most. You could see the characters evolve from episode to episode and this was totaly lacking in season 3. The great optic is cool for a 2 minute trailer, but in a 50 minute episode you need more than that to keep the audience excited. Maybe they shouldn`t have made season3 at all after Andy died - his aura was immensly important for the series as a whole and the character of spartacus.

As much as I disliked this season, I found myself eager in anticipation for the next episode from five onwards (even though I was eventually disappointed). It managed to keep me in suspense. Shitty Spartacus is still better than no Spartacus. The manga series Bleach is an exception to this rule.
now that im unbanned I can say a pretty solid season overall just like season it started out a little slow and people were concerned but just like season 1 I felt like it built up and got stronger and stronger cant wait for the next season.
Liam doesn't bring the same feel that Andy Whitfield did... And I feel that the drama doesn't have the bigger scheme of things.. I'm just eagerly awaiting the Slave War that Spartacus actually brought with him.... not a small Robin Hood group doing guerilla warfare again and again and again.
On April 15 2012 05:43 JiYan wrote: i dont want to read too many comments since im not fully caught up, but i just saw the first episode of vengeance and im a little disappointed =\
Don't worry, that has been said many times before on the first 3 or 4 ish episodes. Gets crazy in the last 5. Slow start, epic ending.
Just completed this season.. all i gota say is that Gannicus is fucking boss.
With that beeing said, the season wasnt so great :\, new spartacus is meh and at a certain point when they were fighting the romans i felt like i was watching power rangers gory version.
Didnt enjoy this season too much. The new Spartacus wasnt bad...just not as good and it was noticable. Wasnt as big, didnt have the square jawline and didnt demand the the scenes very well. The only thing which kept the season decent was Gannicus and Anamaius(?).
I think Spartacus Vengeance wasn´t nearly as good as B&S.
But I wonder if Ashur´s loss to Naevia was intended by Ashur or not. ...He was far stronger than naevia, he saw the love between naevia and crixus, he saw the "noble gesture" of the rebells and finally he knew that he would die there.
There was nothing to win for him. Maybe the act of losing the fight by bringing himself into a weak spot was a "good" one.

Yes there is going to be a 4th season, and they were recently doing castings for Ceaser, so we'll see him in the show, I'm fairly certain that we'll also see Marcus Crassus in the show.
I love al three of the series but i really do believe they need to pay attention to hows been killed or seriously injured in big battles as I always see at least one person get killed twice in every battle.
With Spartacus drawing to a close with its upcoming final season Spartacus: War of the Damned set to premiere on Starz in January, we're left to wonder what series creator Steven DeKnight will do next. Starz answered that question when they recently announced that DeKnight has a new sci-fi project in development called Incursion. We spoke with him about it on Friday when we had the opportunity to sit with him to discuss Spartacus at Comic Con and he had some interesting details to share on what they have in mind for the series.
Well, to be honest, this season was a big disappointment to me. The new actor for Spartacus just doesn't fit, a million other guys would've been better. The plot wasn't really very intriguing to me either, but does anyone really watch spartacus for the plot? If only Andy didn't die, oh man. Poor guy. I hope that I'll adjust to the new guy by the next one, but it just doesn't feel right. Andy really had something special about him, everything was perfect.
Yeah Andy was perfect for it, he embraced the role so well, you could really feel the rage underneath the forced obedience towards the end and it was so good.
