The caster on the English stream seemed awful, and he was definitely not catering for any new possible viewers like me. As a long time GOMTV watcher, I decided to check a new game that I haven't watched before and couldn't really understand much of it. During picks/bans he was just joking around cancers and what not instead of explaining the heroes and how they'd work in a team comp. I don't know are all dota casters at his level or what, but at least in the few LoL tournaments I've seen, the casters did amazing job explaining all the little "This X's ulti works really well with Y's Q" -things like that. I would've liked to hear more about different usual item builds that the international or chinese people go for compared to what these Korean players are doing, possible pro's and cons etc. Probably going to keep watching the tournament but I hope they'd get someone else to cast for the English stream.

Im assuming you at least have a Dota2 installed. If not, you could find one very easily. Just check on the Dota2 Key Giveaway Thread here on TL. They have a "Training/Tutorial" mode in the game, for complete newbies. You might find that helpful if you're looking for somewhere to start.

That said, casters like TobiWan and Ayesee will usually comment on hero roles and how they might synergize. TobiWan: http://www.joindota.com/en/vods Ayesee: http://www.d2l.gg/Results_and_Vods/ I feel like it's the wrong approach for this league. I'm not saying that you need to cast as if you're casting for 5-year-olds, there are some stuff that even the noob viewer can pick up quite easily, but stuff like team compositions and builds are something that you just know nothing of when you watch your first tournament. Dota is a new thing in Korea, and this tournament is supposed to be a "Starter League", why assume that all the viewers are old dota veterans? The caster and his style doesn't fit GOM, and of course I realize that the caster is not actually working at GOMTV, still I feel like they could have picked a better guy for the job. I can't comment on his game knowledge because I have none myself, but as an avid eSports spectator and fan, I did not find his cast good or informative.

I'm certain that the approach to the cast on the Korean stream was completely different from the English stream. Edit: Meh accidentally quoted instead of edit :/ Sorry for double post.

The Korean viewers aren't listening to the English cast. The only people watching an English cast of a Korean league at ungodly hours are hardcore Dota fans. So yes, you assume that the viewers are old dota veterans, because that's what they are. If you want dumbed down commentary then you're better off watching western Dota just with casters who happen to cast that way. But at this point, there is no tournament with commentary in English who's viewerbase are new players.

Well guess they're then. Guess I'm the only new viewer out there then who simply tuned in because a company that I've been paying subscriptions to for about the past 3 years picked a new game for their line-up. I assumed they'd be doing a bit of a noob friendly thing as the games aren't as high level as they're in the bigger leagues.

Doing noob friendly commentary in English for this is the most pointless thing they could possibly do. And if that was their primary stream then it would be worse than pointless, it would make no one watch.

I'm not saying that they owe it to me or that I feel somehow that I'm entitled to have my own special stream where they are explaining even the simplest things to me. Why would it be so wrong to have a cast with more analysis and explanations on stuff like "Ooh this Storm Spirit pick works really well with their Spectre pick, because of so and so". Instead there was some Dota inside joke of something about cancer something. Sure I find deadly illnesses funny just like everybody else, but it didn't really make the cast good imo. At some point there was talk about some Butterfly item picked up by Luna but it being useless because of something the other team had but really no reason given for it, one extra sentence would've made the cast more informative for any possible new viewers like me. I do understand that the guy was casting alone and not on set, which is definitely not easy, I give him that. Perhaps I'm just nitpicking on small things but I feel like Sc2 and LoL are doing so much better job with being more accessible for the new viewers. I've watched some LoL during MLGs and Dreamhack, and they've done so much better job at explaining some deep insight of the game and still being really informative and friendly for the new viewer. Why is that I can't expect the same done in Dota2 then?
