LGD seem fairly solidly fifth in China right now, but there's still a lot of tourneys left for them to show better also China deserves more than just four spots total, there's probably 4 invites, 1 direct qualifier and 1 wildcard spot or something for china.

While I think the $80k (or however much it was) pricetag on buying out his contract was a bit ridiculous, its hard to put a value on leadership. Just because a team loses doesn't mean that they had bad leadership. Newbie may have lost today but can you put that on Xiao8? He's to blame by default because he is the leader but it's hard to say that its because he didn't lead well enough. If Xboct throws some games, is that a failure on Puppey's leadership? Maybe, maybe not. The fact is that none us really knows what Xiao8 (or any other team leader) brings to a team because we are not in a position to see it. All we see is them playing the games when there are a lot of other things going on behind the scenes. There is more to leading a team than simply picking the draft. As for LGD making invites, despite poor recent results and roster changes, they still have a good chance of getting invited provided Newbie doesn't perform much better these next couple months.

Nothing much about xiao8 since his breakup pre-TI3 has convinced me of his hype. I admit there are games where he goes beast mode. But the only thing consisten about xiao8 is his inconsistency in his game.

Well, I am comparing them in their domestic scenes. I do not think LGD can beat Alliance in Bo5, but that's it. Fnatic/Cloud9/Rox.Kis/Sigma on the other hand ? Quite possible. With the rate the things are currently going we won't see LGD at EMS / The Summit, and if they don't get into WPC top6 we won't be able to compare the direct results at all before TI4.

It's pretty common knowledge that his main asset to a team is his leadership which I have outlined in my post above. No one has ever hyped his individual play.

For example, LGD got 4th place in WPC because they were forced to play a Bo5 against VG in a hour after tiring close 2-3 iG series and lost the games 0-3 shortly afterall. G-League has a Bo3 single elimination for playoffs, which is sub-optimal for participating S-class teams, VG didn't even make into it, and yet they are arguably a better team than LGD. LGD with xiao8 at helm had better records than every other team in China not named iG and, as for today's loses, Mu and Hao are largely for blame, not Director8's captaining / executiion. But talentwise Newbee aren't even supposed to beat VG convincingly at the moment, so i don't mind much.

What LGD lacks right now is the leadership Xiao8 brought to the table, and that's pretty clear right now. Regardless of Yao having better fundamentals as a solo player, games with Yao as solo mid were always fairly suspect for LGD simply because Yao does not play well when the tempo of the game revolves around him. This was made painstakingly clear at TI3--where even in games against mid players with inferior fundamentals, Yao was consistently outganked and one step behind his opponents because fundamentally his game is very passive and reactive as a mid player. Whereas Xiao8, regardless of his individual execution and fundamentals, knew how to develop the game in the direction it needed to go for the better players on his team to shine. On the other hand, what Newbee lacks right now is a consistent "anchor" kind of player. Every core player on Newbee has the same issue--impressive peak performance, but prone to overcommit. Hao, Mu, and Xiao8 are all like this. This is where Icy fits the team better than Xiao8 because while Icy has never been a stellar player, he is a player who stably goes along with the tempo of the team, and can anchor the team. He's never going to be the player to carry the team, but he's a net the team can fall back on.
