One of the ways I solved that problem in Pathfinder was to lower the memorization times to 30 minutes and let players swap out spells. It made players way more keen to scout out fights and plan ahead. Plus it let me make tighter, more challenging encounters in general.

I don't run a bunch of pathfinder anyways. My crew enjoys games like 7th Sea, Unknown Armies and Mutants and Master Minds. Being limited by which spells they get at least makes it less absurd, being able to regain and swap spells on a short rest sounds bonkers. And making the encounters harder by buffing mages hardly matters when the issue is the gap between them and other classes. The poor monk will just feel ever more useless.

Iono the only player you've described seems to have been rather upset at your response to his #antifun #nocounterplay #lv1spell

The main issue with spells is that they can only be used once and if they fail, you need a new plan. If you are using flight or levitation to go over a pit and the pit happens to be trapped with a magic gust of wind that knocks anything passing over into the ceiling, you're out luck. The concept of more enemies showing up mid fight also irritated him. He needed to be managed most.

Some stuff was broken. They tried to fix in 3.5. It helped, but the same kind of stuff was still broken. They tried to fix it in Pathfinder. It helped, but the same kind of stuff was STILL broken. Either your house rules are so much better than all the work put into 3.0 over a decade, or you have to accept that there are some flaws with the core of the system that makes casters overpowered compared to other classes. You would have to rewrite the whole system, so you may as well play another version. Or accept it has flaws you can't just fix with GM magic. Doesn't mean you can't play it, doesn't mean its bad, doesn't mean it isn't fun, but it is still a big issue in the system.
