If you could only break characters in 3rd by making those OP prestige class combinations, extra books, certain items, etc. that would be one thing. But the game has balance issues with people just picking a class they like and taking the obvious path. Then buff the weak classes yourself. This is the best part of table top games, you don't need to wait for patches.
I assume you are talking about wizards being garbage at low level, right?

wizards in 3.5 are also fucking godlike at low levels
color spray ggnore

Not really, Wizards aren't even that garbage at low levels in 3rd. The are so much better than in previous editions, where the weak early - strong later made more sense.
Exactly, color spray, sleep, grease, etc. are already good. Plus you don't even have to try to hit them with a shitty crossbow and no dex if you don't want to waste spells like you had to.

I ran a Iron Kingdoms game where my wizard kept abusing that spell until I just started throwing characters with goggles at them. Luckily, Iron Kingdoms was steam punk, so it was easy to justify. But man he was grumpy when I did it.

plan6 sounds like a very 4th edition GM

I don't mind power gaming. But make my sessions boring as fuck for over a month and I'll find a way to entertain myself. And watching players whine about how their favorite spell doesn't fix every problem any more is pretty fun.

Using one of the most basic spells in the game when it makes sense to do so isn't powergaming.
That's the issue. You have to intentionally gimp yourself. "Oh, color spray would kick ass right now. Better not use it or the DM will start throwing Daredevil monsters at me".
|
it sounds like the DM just wasn't able to design good encounters more than anything else
|
The goggles were a good solution. You can just throw people with high will saves to deal with it as well.
The real problem with the system is the memorization requirements of wizard locking in their spells. They can't change it up, so there is not reason not to have color spray on hand. But I would never feel bad about throwing an color spray proof encounter at a group of heroes leaned on it.
If my wizard isn't worried about all of his/her spells being useless, I don't I'm being a good DM.
|
if you had 5 generic fights that were all solved by a simple lv1 spell and your solution is same generic fight with goggles, then you've probably failed as a DM and should look into pre-written 4th edition campaigns
|
I wouldn't blame it on memorization. It's not like it works that well with Sorcs.

I stepped up the encounters, but mostly got tired of how confident the players were with that spell on hand. So I knocked it down a peg so they needed to rely on something else. And they still used it, but the thief removed googles on the bigger enemies.
Also, Iron Kingdoms is FILLED with goggles. Like FILLED with them. And they were in the Kingdom of Cygnar, the land of goggles.
Edit: and that is the risk of being a Wizard and taking a spell that is canceled by wills saves or being sightless. Encounters happen that stop the sleep.

And all that discussion is about the point in the game where casters are weaker by a very big margin.

Most people consider me a beautiful AND awesome math teacher but either descriptor is acceptable.
You're also overlooking the irony in that I'm posting on a website devoted to video games and D I G I T A L S P O R T S.

I think we're opposites actually.
I am disregarding females (despite having a gf) to acquire mmr whereas he has acquired mmr and is looking for a gf (I think his sig was something like a 6k requirement iirc)
