If you can beat normal bots you should just jump into matchmaking. It is scary at first but remember, everyone was a noob once!
Anyway, ive been playing a lot of Vengeful Spirit lately, and I've been really enjoying her. She's the first support hero that really clicked with me. I love her stun early game, and late game her swap is strong as well. I love creating space for my carry to farm by ganking and generally being annoying early game.
Any other heroes play similar in style to her? I've tried Lina but couldnt get the hang of her.

I really enjoy Lion as a support hero. I mostly play ganker/utility but Lion is very enjoyable, either with friends or pubs. He has 2 dependable disables and can chain off for 5 seconds, which gives your lane partner loads of time. His ult is relevant at most stages of the game (still relevant up to 40 minutes) and is particularily good for ganking a mid carry (sniper, Nevermore, etc) who tend to have low hp. Stun+lvl1 ult does crazy damage early game.
He isn't very farm dependant and you won't notice the gold missing when you buy wards and chick/crow. Useful items are bottle or arcanes, forcestaff or blink, but really, you're fine with boots and magic wand. He is by far my highest winrate hero (like 80%), great go-to when playing with 4 randoms and you want to make sure someone is supporting.

Anyone else think that the new afk detection system is fucked up? What are you supposed to do when you get stomped and the enemy team refuses to end the game. Sitting in the fountain and moving a bit still gives you an abandon with the new afk detection system.

Dont you think thats kinda fucked up? Whats the point of the fountain then. Also, If you feed, why should the enemy even end the game. Instead they could just keep killing you since some people obviously enjoy doing that.

Ya I think its fucked up, I was just giving you a way to not get an abandon. when a game has reached the point where there is nothing for you to do but sit in fountain its probably safe to just be stupid aggressive until the game is over. I assume that they are basically fountain camping you at this point though.
The most annoying people are the ones who go either sit in front of your fountain or go to the jungle after the game is clearly over, but I personally dont run into that very often, and very rarely will all 5 opponents have no interest in killing the throne.

Yea I was sitting at the edge of the fountain when they were camping us and got an abandon LOL what a joke

well my friend decided to play nothing but huskar tonight. He's not "bad," so to speak, he's just not good enough to snowball, which kinda sorta really needs to happen for huskar to be relevant (in my experience) later on. I usually play support in pubs because if i don't there won't be a courier or a ward in sight.
*edit: needless to say, we only won 1 game tonight :/
Apart from windrunner (<3) what heroes can play as both support and semi-dps? After starting with a mek/drums, what items can i get to be more useful in fights later on, assuming i'm farming, but not fed enough to rush big items like sheepstick?

What about Furion? I usually go Mek and sheep/Orchid Afterwards to aid gank. IN early game i just harass the enemy and let the carry get the last hits. If there is a gank happening i TP to the location and if its successful i help push the lane and use the towers gold for items.

I don't know man. That is just the national and regional finals. Dota 1 has been in Malaysia and Singapore WCG finals since 2005 and in WCG Asian finals since 2006 yet it is not featured in the Grand finals ever. However, Dota 2 does have a good chance.

I guess tp>sprout>treant (ult when possible)?

all great supports who can hold their own in a pub.
Sand King and Rubick are also quite strong.

Personally if I am playing furion as a support I would still go for treeants first, just for the ability to manipulate creepwaves (push, or pull and cut off enemy creeps) as well as offering the possibility of jungling if your lane didnt go as well. Tele at 2 and sprout at 3. I guess sprout first would be ok as well but tangoes and qb's would prove to reduce the effectiveness of it.

My buddy loves playing necro as support. Just get that mek, buy wards, and always ult that stupid carry xD

I feel sprout is extremely dependent on who is on your team. If you have the team makeup to gank within the first two levels and play aggressive, it can work out. But if the lanes are not quite allowing for it, than treant is better (imo). I just find the treants to be much more helpful overall whereas sprout is very situational.
Might I also add, I love playing as furion. He was one of the heroes I always felt worried to play, as if I would screw up. Similar to SF and SS. But man, playing him can be so much fun and you can do a lot with him. Such a strong and annoying hero.

what the fuck valve's match making system is retarded... I went with 4 of my friends the past week and upped my wins to lose by 40 from 19
Here I come earlier today got 0 out of 8 games by getting fully retarded teams... I mean, if it were good games lost then I won't notice. But it seems the system made it so that potentially lower mmr players could get on my game... fuck. Or i'm really on a bad luck roll

Isn't that how its suppose to work? You won a bunch in a row so it gave you a high mmr and to balance that your four allies are lower mmr. I know when I play with TL people for a while and win with then and then when I solo Queue my allies get ....interesting...

Thts the system alright, trying to match a 50% win rate for ya. If you wanna play competitive, try IH games?

For skill build I go: TP sprout( for potential ganks) or Treants(to scout the runes for mid) sprout( for potential ganks) or Treants(to scout the runes for mid) for Lvl 3 depending on what you'v picked in lvl 2 TP Treants Ulti(use it whenever ure ganking, b4 or after u tp is up to ur judgement) max treants max sprout
If there is a hard carry like AM(hate this guy) get Sheep asap. Ignore all fights and just tp to places for farm.
I usually dont go Midas unless im playing the jungler,, but i find jungling not as helpful as laning
