Hi guys,
Yesterday I recorded 3 videos, and I wanted to share with everyone a very nice way to balance your demon hunter for CHEAP. You don't need fancy Natalya gear, nor any 10mil per equip gear, as many people often say.
With this balance, you don't need to be a "GLASS CANNON DH" or a "TANK DH," but rather you are tanky and you can do good damage. For this guide, I used a naked level 60 Demon Hunter, with a 5M gold budget. This is ALL you need to do well in Act 3.
Higher Budget Players: If you have a high budget, and would like a reference for a good balanced gearset, here is a link to my main DH gears: http://i.imgur.com/ypSrm.jpg
I explained in detail what kind of equipment to look for, what stats you need for each equipment, and so on in Part 1.
I documented the entire process and split it in 3 parts:
Thanks a lot for this, been looking for something like this. Havn't been sure what to do with DH since the nerfs, and I had to take a break from playing, so this guide sounds perfect to me back up to speed.
I've been waiting for the "general [class] build" threads to spit out guides for specific builds.
Youtube is a great media for the first presentation, but maybe a writeup would be nice as well. When actually following this guide, it would be easier to be able to come back and carefully read what you need on your shoulder rather than scrolling through a long youtube. Also a lot easier for you to update when/if changes are needed.
We should have a stickied thread linking to all guides also.

I just went and tried this whole experiment.
While it works fine for azmodan and the area before him, as well as outdoor areas, when I actually tried to collect 5 stacks in Stonefort or Keep Depths it failed pretty badly as you dont have room to kite like you do in the video.
I ran into several wallers with either invulnerable minons or mortar which totally stalled me, as they reduce yous DPS to nothing, and block any kiting while forcing you to blow every defensive CD.
I even tried throwing a few pieces of better gear on, but it still just couldnt handle enclosed spaces at all.
I'd like to see you try to actually do these areas or an actual reasonable farming run with wallers other than those joke harpies. As is, this DH is still not nearly strong enough to to farm A3 more efficiently than A1, and is therefore kind of useless.

I'll definitely take you up on this, and I'm willing to do another video (Part 4) demonstrating that we can get 5 stacks as well, beginning at Stonefort. but you are right to say that areas right on space are a lot harder, and I think so too

yep I do think that I can get quite more efficient as well, and anyone can too, if they search for better deals. However, I did not want a 3 hour video of browsing the AH, 1h is already long!
In my video, I realized that I had quite a bit of money leftover, so I bought some more expensive gloves, rings, and amulets. My main goal was to stay within the 5M budget because I think it's a reasonable amount, and even with the expensive rings and the 1M amulet, only 4M was spent

I can try, but I honestly think I'm not experienced enough with the other classes to give advice. I think the quality of advice wouldn't really be as good as other guides around, so I'll stick with what I know for know.

Yes, it is certainly possible to kill ghom with this build, HOWEVER: you need different skills (I actually just tried this out and killed him, but on my 2nd try though).
The skill build is: - Marked for death - Shadow power - Companion - Preparation
If you would like to see this build kill ghom, I can upload a video commentary tomorrow (sleep now!)

The problem I have with these "budget gear" guides is that all of them just grab the cheapest choices within their requirements. While that's obviously the point of the challenge, it doesn't reflect the quality of gear people following your guide can get.
For example, the closest match to your amulet on the AH is double the cost (2 million). And I can't even begin to count the gear I've bought cheap while just browsing for gear upgrades, only to find it worth a few hundred thousand more the next.
If you want to do it for personal challenge, by all means, snipe good stuff without a second thought. If you want this to be a general guide for anyone at any time, if you can't see any other items that are as good within 50k or 10% (whichever is higher) of the asking price, assume that someone else won't find something similar for that cheap.
Thanks for the videos! I found the gear buying guide to be very useful. Once my DH alt hits 60 I will put that to good use. Its nice to know you can gear for that cheap! Obviously everyone will not be able to do it so cheap. But its nice to know you can find good value if you know what to look for.

Did you even watch the video? It is pretty clear that he used the tools that were given to him (playing with the parameters of the AH features of max buyout, minimum stats and category choice) to help him find these 'cheap choices'. A lot of players do not even know how to use the AH properly and I find that not only did he do a good job highlighting the important stats to look for in each piece of equipment but he did a great job explaining that everyone is susceptible to the randomness of the AH (advantages/disadvantages of shopping during peak/dead hours).

Well, I just searched the AH about 2 minutes ago and found similar matches to his amulet for about 1 million. 2 of them had 1d11h remaining on them. He clearly explains that when hunting on the AH there is a factor randomness but an indicator (but not the end all be all) of a good find is the the expiry timer. I can't even begin to count the gear I 'thought' I bought cheap while just browsing for gear upgrades, only to find it worth a few hundred thousand less the next day.
He did his entire search for all the gear in under one hour. If anything, the fact that he was able to find these cheap deals should be accentuated because a budget-minded player will have more time to do hunting on the AH.

This is a great general guide for everyone - showing great use of the tools given in the AH to find good deals. Why should he assume that someone else won't find something similar? I actually think he should assume that others will find something even better compared to his prices based on the fact that everyone else is not constrained by time and should have patience.

Yes, those are all good options too, I opted against using a follower, because you can equip a templar with INSANE vit for cheap, and then he'll have like 60k hp, stun things for you, heal you, etc, he's a great distraction for elites as well (despite dying so quickly)
I would prefer to do these videos without a follower, but it's a perfectly good idea to use them

Yes, although I never tried it, I do believe it, but with 500k you need to be very careful with what you use your money for. I considered using a lower budget, but then the AH episode would have been too long!
Also, I wanted a budget that will do things "efficiently enough," as opposed to "doable," so that people don't get frustrated as much with their playthroughs (if they do choose to follow the guide)
Yeah, some people don't realize yet that AH skills matter way more in this game than class and build. Rerolling to the current fotm class won't really help the people who are constantly grossly overpaying for crap items.
Because Ghom is a popular boss for DH players to be stuck at, I added a short video of me planning our strategy, skills, and killing ghom with the current 4M gearset. Shameless bump!
edit: agree with andrewlt, AH skills are really important!

Here is an alternative you can try. The DH tank build. It works really cheap, and you don't need AH sniping skills, noone else is shopping for most of this gear so the prices are low. I spent 3 million on gear, a bit more if you count the gems and follower gear but it is still quite cheap for how well it performs. It is also very easy to play compared to having to carefully kite so as not to die. Here is a small clip where I just facetank Ghom and kill him:

Damn, I wish there was something like this for the wizard. Didn't want to sift through every page of that thread, rather have everything in one place as you have done here. Learned a lot from the first vid, great work!
I just thought of modification to this guide that might be good - if you have a mercenary. Set the templar to use the skill inspire, which generates hatred. With that skill you never need entangling shot to generate hatred and you can use the skill slot for marked for death instead...
It works great for me.
Maybe you can add to the guide what you would do to spec a mercenary too?

If you pay attention to the criteria he uses to select gear in the AH, switch out dex for int and you can do basically exactly the same thing. Everything except for chest (no +disc cloaks) and weapon/off-hand basically works the same way for a wizard. Get lots of int and all res, vit where it's efficient to do so, and otherwise focus on crit chance and crit damage. +AP on crit gear is nice, but isn't really necessary until you're out of budget gear and into awesome gear. Wizard skills are pretty straightforward -- any two of two of MM/AO/Blizzard, venom hydra, force armor, and either diamond skin and fracture teleport or one of those and force weapon. Whatever passives you want -- I like blur, evocation, glass cannon, or galvanizing ward.

Yes, it would definitely be a good idea to cover mercenary builds! It's a good idea for an upcoming video - but for the quests & demonstrations, I would like to do them without a mercenary, to stay true to the whole "solo" idea
Also, beginning to record & upload quest/elite clears for all Act 3 areas with our budgeted gear:

Thanks for this, time to go attempt act 3 on my wiz and dh again!
MysticaL, first of all - your post are VERY VERY helpful! My DH improved a lot for very small amount of gold. Just out of curiosity - can you post a picture of your non budget equipment and your DH stats with this equipment? I want to see how big the difference is. Thanks in advance!
I just dinged 60. My weapon has crit damage (~65%), socket (45% right now, threw in cheap gem) and almost as high DPS, but only cost ~160k on EU
Also i notice a decent amount of physical/all resist on that gear, is it worth it? I only have around 15k HP (cleared half of act 1 with ~4 deaths) but one of the minions of an elite (yellow) mob melee swung me for over 25k while i was recording last night. Isnt it better to just dodge and smokescreen everything? IIRC Athene's DH has or had 17k HP

Updated - the difference on my main gear and my budget gear is huge. However, because my main gear is so successful in farming (MUCH more successful than Tank/Glass Cannon builds), and I imagine it will be what people will gear towards in the future for PvP, I wanted to share a good way to build your demon hunter and take advantage of every stat.
On July 17 2012 18:55 HandsomeDevil wrote: NIce videos, very helpful. But, how come you chose to do act3 inferno and not act2 or act4? Just wondering.
I chose Act 3 because currently, Act 3 & Act 4 have the same drop rate. This means if you want the best gears in the game, it's sufficient to farm Act 3. Currently, farming act 3 is the ONLY "end-game" and that is to improve your equipment, and prepare for PvP.

Athene's DH is not for farming, nor for PvP, it is just a glass-cannon DH. I imagine glass cannon builds being too frail for PvP, but I can only imagine because I don't know. Athene impresses people with high numbers, and he does it so well because he kills everything SO insanely fast with his DPS. That's not our goal, we can't afford to have 400k dps, not even 200k without sharpshooter, we need something more practical than this...
In the end, your "most efficient way to farm" is going to be to IGNORE monsters. This is how I currently farm, I ignore regular monsters, run through them, and kill only elites. Glass cannon DHs can't do this very well, because you can't smoke screen forever, and tank DH take too long to kill.
Resist gear is NOT worth it with low HP. You need at least ~30k ++ (40K is a great number)

Ok, ty, i read some more of your OP etc.
Why do you have 3 piece Natalya's on your main gear? I thought the tripled discipline regeneration from 4piece bonus was considered very overpowered (athene said it would probably be nerfed, until blizzard stated otherwise) and he only dropped it from his main gear to persue that 414k+ DPS without regard for survivability, if you are taking that into account so much, isnt the massive amount of disc worth a lot?

You're right, I think the 2 discipline is OP, and blizzard announced plans to reward players who invested (basically ~300M-500M) in getting good rolls on Natalya gear by keeping the set bonuses (for now).
The reason here is really simple. I cant't afford the ring yet LOL I have great rolls on the helm, armor, and boots; now I just gotta somehow come up with 150M for the ring T__T

that's interesting... to tell you the truth, I actually haven't tried him with a merc. But yeah, probably templar's constant aggro stalls him while you continue moving, then ghom takes a different path to you? I really don't know, but it's just a guess lol
Thanks for the Ghom/Gear vids. They helped me upgrade my dh's gear for cheap and beat ghom. For those asking, I did it with the scoundrel (for the extra 3% crit chance)
I bashed my head against the wall trying Ghom ~35 times yesterday with the same spec and similar gear, just one single misclick and its all over (my hand is jittery, I must learn to use shift kiting for the situations). I gave up after I got him down to 30k hp and died -.- Will try him again when I have a better strategy for how I will move him around the room instead of the run like shit and hope smokescreen lasts me to that health globe

Heh, yeah it's annoying - you really have to make the most of every inch of space... takes a bit of getting used to but it's definitely consistently doable as long as you don't make a dumb mistake.

The game is hard enough as it is!
Could you make a video pwning noobs when they release pvp mode?
Hey, just thought I'd let you know that I came back after quitting the game a month or so ago, and that this guide was really helpful and works out well. Some of the prices on the items can be more expensive, but I think that's balanced out by the occasional steal (I got a 50% crit dmg, dex amulet for like 200k :-) )
Very nice! I was thinking of compiling a DH guide as well. My gear probably costs over 5M but it's defn under 10M. I'm currently in the final stages of Act4, having killed Rakanoth but not Izual yet.
I play a survival-style DH and so I have high resistall (about 500) and relatively low DPS (about 37k now without SS). But when I started Act3, I had probably only about 28k DPS. I killed Cydaea with the 37k DPS I think.
The trick for some bosses is to cheese them - Ghom, for instance, can be cheesed using a DH tank build (google and you'll find it). And if you think that the gear for the tank build is expensive, guess again (it costs at most 150k).
Cydaea cannot be cheesed and she's a pain to deal with, but there's a trick to her - during her "spider phase", you need to keep moving, and and there are some nice spots to nuke the spiders.
Some of the hardest parts in Act3 is when you pull an almost impossible to kill champion pack. Sometimes to save your sanity, it's best to skip them lol
In Act4, I also cheesed Rakanoth, but I'll talk about that if I write my guide!

We dont know enough to prepare for it IMO.
With people on the upper end of the spectrum doing 200k listed DPS... If you armor and resist stacks up to 90% damage reduction, good for you, but ive spent like 3 hours in Inferno and my Cluster Bomb crits for ~180k x6 per shot.
People have three or four (or in some cases, 8) times my listed DPS, there will have to be massive changes to the damage system, or buffs/debuffs that we dont know about yet, all of your gearing efforts could be worthless if there is an unknown factor.
With smokescreen being as it is and respawns in arena, im not even sure stacking HP/Resist would be the way to go.
It only takes 1/6'th of a cluster bomb to instantly kill you from 50k hp with enough resistances/armor to have 90% damage reduction which is pretty high end, as it stands right now i have no idea how blizzard plans for anyone with gear to survive for more than half a second if focused by all 4 enemies, even with a bandaid fix like a global nerf to damage

- Cluster bombs will never hit a player lol, no one is going to stand still unless they are stunlocked (but it is normal to nerf the duration of statuses in PvP, at least from my experience with most other games that I have played)
- It COULD be a worthless effort yes, but here is a video by Kripp that would describe how I exactly think about this TLDR; Some preparation is better than none, and those who prepare (even if wrong) are much more likely to at least prepare for SOME of the content released (even if wrong on other parts) + Show Spoiler +
- Smokescreen with glass cannon DH? There is a 0.5 sec cooldown between smokescreens... if I simply SS myself, and hold down my left click with hungering arrow, the moment your smokescreen runs out, the hundering arrow would be guided and 1hit ko if you completely ignore resists/HP

LOL not my fault! asian-level gamers know what they're doing so there's more demand for good gear! lol just kidding
Hey mystical, great videos really enjoyed them. Can you explain further what areas you would do for a typical azmodan run?
From what I heard you say, you dont do arreat crater levels. I've been doing stonefort, then arreat crater lvl 1 all the way down to azmodan every time, taking me a little under 2 hours each run. Its been painful, and I guess I should be skipping arreat crater levels because those snakes are so annoying. Anyways thx for helping us all out/giving us a good watch.

Thanks, I really hate arreat craters because they are very long levels, and in the middle of a level, a worm can pop up beneath you and kill you if you're low. It's so annoying because you have to walk back, so it's a big time waster
I do my runs in this order:
- create quest for cydaea (second heart) - stonefort to get 2-3 stacks - temple of the cursed 1,2 & finish cydaea - arreat core & azmodan - rakkis crossing (check underbridge) - go down rakkis crossing - if you continue to go down to the snow area, check if forward barracks is open - temple of the damned 1,2, heart of damned (very mobby) - keep depths 1 - keep depths 3 (skip keep 2 cause it has suiciders, i.e. can't run through this lvl as quickly)
1 solo run typically takes me about 1 hour, but I seriously try to skip as many mobs as possible (that's a big reason why I find shadow power so useful, it makes farming runs A LOT faster)
I don't know if bumping threads is allowed, but I added a Keep Depths quest clear.
Also added annotations at the beginning of each quest video, which link you to each elite kill, so that you don't have to watch me kill regular mobs in that area.

you have some really good content in this topic. Should be no problem to bump when you add something new.
I have been following this guide very closely, but recently my DH got so much better that I've gone for a higher DPS build.
Thanks Elroi, I'm more of a lurker (this account was made in 2000 or something), I don't create topics often so yeah
Anyways - I added 3 more videos, 1 video with my main gear (a little bit of showing off with speedfarming), and 2 videos that complete the Act 3 quest/elite walkthrough!
MAIN GEAR - Natalya Set Speedfarming: 7min = 8 elite + 2 act bosses + Show Spoiler +
