Do you really think that people being upset about GOM hiring a caster that some people can't understand is enough for you to basically call the same people ignorant bigots that would fail to travel outside of NA successfully or respectfully? Really?

True, but I suppose it's like any other position in the working world. You're hired, you're on a probationary period, if you suck you're let go, if they think you'll work out you stay on-board. I'll avoid passing judgement on the decision until I see the Code A rounds but from some previous VODs there are times I have one hell of a time deciphering exactly what is being said but like any other accent it might just take time to adjust to it. Guess we'll find out with Code A a couple weeks out .

Unfortunately, we don't. GomTV has all the materials in regards to the decision. We all want to think that we do know who should and shouldn't be a caster, but unfortunately, we're not in the top dog's position. Sucky huh? (To be perfectly honest, there's a lot of chatter about Torch having been a candidate, but I have no idea whether that's true or not. Do you?) This is actually a valid point which I guess Gom was trying to emphasize with the announcement saying that they are still looking for casters. But it's not going to make me listen to something that hurts my brain. I just can't stand her voice and that's not something she can change. And there's very little I can do about it either. Have you watched anything on mute other than porn? Pretty boring. The lack of applicants/alternatives doesn't work as an argument because: - kellyMILKIES does not speak English, which makes her unqualified for the assigned role right from the start (obviously not from GOM's perspective, for whatever reason). - Having her talk is actually bad enough of an experience for many that people feel compelled to mute the audio or turn off the stream completely, which means that it would be better to have nobody casting at all than to have her do it. I completely agree. Kelly doesnt even speak with an accent, she is incapable of pronouncing several letters and mumbles a lot and this combination makes anything she says either "hard to understand" or downright "painful to hear". I am lucky to have really good knowledge and experience in english, but anyone who is not a native speaker will have an almost impossible time understanding her.
Despite her knowledge - which she may or may not have - this inability to be understood should disqualify her for the job. Maybe she got the job because she is a pretty girl (none of us is knows any particulars here so it is all speculation) but that would be a rather weak reason for it ... we will just have to wait and see how it all turns out in a few days.
Sadly we don't have a Professor Higgins around to work a miracle ... (1)

I have no problem with her voice, the biggest possible problem with me from the casts I've seen of her, and most low level commentators actually... is that they simply aren't entertaining. They just talk mechanically about the game constantly, explaining what the players could do constantly, rather than talking about whats actually happening and making jokes / being entertaining
It'll be interesting to see when she casts with Artosis/Tasteless if she can actually be entertaining. Add to that she talks very fast and they typically talk very slow. Could be REALLLY awkward.

She played DOTA with the team PMS*Asterisk Girls and commentated with TobiWan at SMM in Singapore. Ah thats where I know here from. Hope she'll do good

That's a sheepish thing to say. I've lived in five of Canada's major cities and I can tell you first hand how diverse this nation is. I do a lot of traveling too. Even with my Bose headphones, it is very hard for me to make out what she is saying. Having a dialogue with someone like herself is a lot different from broadcasting. Broadcasting is a one way street. Spectators shouldn't have to focus on what she's trying to say. It should be on the game. That's why you hear people muting commentators like Maven and herself, or going to other streams in order to enjoy the experience and not hinder it.

I really hope she won't bring in singlish into the commentating :/ its going to look bad on singaporeans in general.
as long as shes able to speak professionally i don't have a problem with us

I dunno if she can speak professionally though, judging from the casts she did for the SEA tourneys and Nation Wars, I think she can do it more as a hobby than a profession. :/

Torch isn't her co-caster... Artosis and Tasteless is taking turns to be her co-caster.

Being difficult to understand is one thing (as is making mistakes in analysis, which is fine on occassion since Tastosis do it all the time).
However, what bothers me most about her is how in all the videos i've seen she constantly talks over the other commentator. She seems to have no understanding of how that caster-commentator relationship works and lacks any etiquette. That is what she has to fix first and foremost since that will quickly sour her relationship with Tasteless/Artosis if she constantly talks over them.
|
A lot of my cousins are based in Singapore, the accent of hers isn't that bad (unless she speaks very fast), but her pitch of voice I find grating. I'm not sure how Tasteless and her will work out since Tasteless does seem less knowledgeable about SCII than he was in BW.
|
I think with Tasteless she will be a lot better, offering more knowledge than play by play. I just find her voice very pitchy but maybe that will be less noticable. :D

This tells us one of two things:
- the decision-makers English is limited and they are used to her speech - employees like Dan and Nick weren't highly involved in the process
Or that Dan & Nick are okay with her. Which might actually be a good sign (though I still have my doubts of her being understandable in actionpacked situations).

I just had a terrible premonition...
the LR thread for the first night of games she casts is going to be a wasteland. Many-a-fools will be downed by ban hammers.

She's ok, needs some more help to improve on in-game knowledge. A pair would be nice, Code A is really worth watching for the GSL so I hope she does great!!! Goodluuck.

In any case, if the person who is co-casting with her isn't used to our colloquial English, he would have problems understanding her if she really did use Singlish.

Yeah, okay, I do feel sorry for her. =(
She's around my age, and to get a job like this must be amazing.
I'm sorry for being so mean...but I just wish GOM would have never hired her in the first place! Then she wouldn't be in this position where she has to cast games that she's not at the ability (language and caster wise) to cast yet.
I'm sorry Kelly, GOM hired you when they should have seen straight away that you're not 100% at that high-level professional caster level yet. Maybe someday! Hopefully. I don't doubt you're dedicated, and that you could improve over time, and probably blossom into that high-tier caster that you want to be.
But right now isn't that time. You still have a fair way to go. I just hope you can acknowledge that. Because I think Kelly and most of the people on TL agree that improvement does need to happen. The difference is we don't want that improvement to have to happen during the GSL Code A matches, not at the price of our enjoying possibly some of the best Code A game lineups on offer since the start of the GSL. That's all!
No one's against you as a person. None of this is personal at all.
I hope that's not too much to ask. =(

That's why I said Dan and Nick weren't highly involved in the process, or never at all.
It's one thing to say, "Okay, here Dan. These are the final 10 applicants and here's some tape of their casting. What are your thoughts? Who would you consider for the job?"
and say, "Here's Kelly. Good, no?"
It also comes down to how you word the question. In the latter question, there is little wiggle room for discussion. Language is a beautiful thing.

“If you are really effective at what you do, 95% of the things said about you will be negative.”
I strongly confirm it.
And here is another quote I like:
If you want to make a lot of people hate you, all you need to do is make a lot of money doing something you love. —Hugh MacLeod
you can replace "lof of money" with "being successfull", "do what you love" etc...

We'll see how it goes , i'm skeptical but maybe she'll prove us wrong! Actually what worries me the most is the artosis /kelly combination, because Artosis tends to be a bit cocky and "elitist" ( not sure about the word) . I have this feeling that he will make kelly feel uncomfortable and that we'll have some really awkard moments , it might be funny though ^^.
Well anyway she will probably cast this season , and if it doesn't work out gom can change the casters and it's not a big deal ! Good luck to her , I hope she can prove us wrong, but even if she proves herselft to be a terrible caster , there is no reason to flame her that way :s.
