It's the only chance at creating some artificial sense of empathy to stand-in for the one these guys seem to have been born without. I know you like to play arm-chair philosopher, but it's all just speculation.

These kids are yet to be diagnosed with any serious mental disability (along the lines of the myriad of serious mental disabilities with which people lead productive lives while not torturing defenseless animals).

I disagree with how the justice system uses something like prison as a form of rehabilitation for a crime when the only 'rehabilitation' often gained is a fear of going back to prison. But I also feel that some people are simply beyond rehabilitation. If we disagree on that point, then obviously we aren't going to agree on much here =P

It's like the guys around here who broke into a neighbour's house and microwaved their cat. Call me a pessimist but I can't imagine a world where the type of psychosis necessary to pull off something like that can ever be remedied.

I wish harm to no one. These kids may have went beyond what's socially acceptable, but you are no better than them by hoping they'll be raped in jail or the like.

So its cat/dog > human > other animals?

Don't get me wrong, the guys a jerk for doing this to his pet, but I wouldn't wish him harm, at worst I would go out of my way to avoid him.
