Funny, I had the same discussion with my friend.
The only way to "rationalize" the differences is by seeing the root cause of the actions. In porn, there are two actors that are role playing to make a profit. In prostitution, one person is selling sex for profit.
So if two pornstars got together and the male paid the female, then it's prostitution. But if the same two were paid by a third party, it's acting...
Crazy world ain't it? But who's to say that the next generation will legalize prostitution and make sex workers at least have a decent place to work instead of walking the streets....kinda touchy subject though...sorta like ppl who want to legalize certain drugs.

I'd say it's because it's difficult for the government to collect taxes on it

Well, in sweden, its not illegal to sell sex.
However, its illegal to buy sex.

Wtf? are you sure? sounds kind of silly... I mean, if someone sells sex then someone must be the buyer ? ?? or am I missing out on something?

instead of buying , maybe you donate money... (I know my logic is flawed.)

Ah I see.. but if they want to keep from law violations then it's obviously better to forbid selling as well, though I can understand that they don't want to blame it on the prostitutes maybe because they are in a difficult situation or something
edit: oh and btw, technically speaking, aren't the prostitutes indirectly committing a crime by selling? since selling leads to buying which is illegal?

Paying a woman over the phone to sound like she is having sex with you is also legal. Paying a woman directly for sex, however, is illegal. But if you pay a woman to have sex with you on camera and distribute copies of it for profit...it's legal again.
That so totally reminded me of this from Pulp Fiction:
It breaks down like this: it's legal to buy it, it's legal to own it, and, if you're the proprietor of a hash bar, it's legal to sell it. It's legal to carry it, but that doesn't really matter 'cause - get a load of this - if you get stopped by the cops in amsterdam, it's illegal for them to search you. I mean, that's a right the cops in amsterdam don't have.

Whereas in case 1 both get paid.
Dunno if that's the legal reason tho! I think this is right, in terms of explaining in sc. You pay to watch to pros play, battle it out on screen or live, or you pay the pro to teach you the proper way to DO it or have fun with you.

all bout taxes imo. just like drugs. if you could tax dealers or pimps, i bet they would be perfectly legal.

Well kind of stupid I think, why should it be illegal to pay for sex when you can pay someone to cut your hair. What is the big deal over sex, can´t see it from here...

Initially, i believe, when pornography was just starting it's roots the creators of it were taken to court because fag#1 believed that it was prostitution but the pornography side won the case because of the fact that pornography is created for entertainment, and for a viewing audience and not for the pleasure of either of the actors.

Guess where the brothel was located? Inside the same fucking building as the policestation.
GG.
