About the family incident. The story has been told in almost every Ukrainian news source but with very few details. I can get you a dozen of links but there is no new reliable information. Basicaly it's the same short story referenced on locals/some journalists/police and pictures which I already posted. If there are more reliable news on the matter, I post it here.

While we're at it, let's arrest every foreigner in sight because they're all involved with the killings! sigh.

Red Cross staff detained in east Ukraine: rebel official

Several members of the Red Cross have been arrested in the rebel-held eastern Ukrainian city of Donetsk on suspicion of espionage, a spokesman for the insurgents told AFP on Saturday.
"They were arrested yesterday. We suspect they were engaged in espionage and we are currently checking these accusations," said Kiril Rudenko, deputy spokesman for the self-proclaimed "People's Republic of Donetsk".
The spokesman was not able to confirm whether a foreigner was among those held.

Militants hold Red Cross workers for seven hours in east Ukraine

(Reuters) - Pro-Russian militants held several Red Cross workers hostage for seven hours in the rebel eastern Ukrainian city of Donetsk, severely beating one before freeing them in Saturday's early hours, a local Red Cross official said.

A spokesman for the self-styled "Donetsk People's Republic", which is holding a referendum on Sunday on breaking with Kiev, said the workers had been detained on Friday evening by rebel activists on suspicion of espionage.

He could not clarify the nature of the accusations leveled against them or say where they had been held.

The Red Cross official gave no further details, though the internet newspaper Novosti Donbassa said a Frenchman had been among seven held by activists who entered the Red Cross building in Donetsk. There was no confirmation of this.

"They were released at two o'clock. One had been heavily beaten," Red Cross official Irina Tsaryuk told Reuters. He was now in hospital. Red Cross headquarters in Geneva said simply that there had been "some kind of incident last night".

Novosti Donbassa said the hostage takers had also seized large stores of medicine from the Donetsk office.

The Red Cross website said medication had been delivered on May 7 to Donetsk head office for distribution in the region, where there has been heavy fighting in recent days between pro-Russian militants and Ukrainian security forces.

No need to ignore Ukrainian media, but just make sure to wear your sceptical spectacles EuromaidanPR posts a lot of unconfirmed/exaggerated crap. Not a big fan. Kyivpost seems more reliable, but is of course pro-Ukrainian biased.

@Cheerio, which Ukrainian media is more reliable/factual?

Why the hell would the Red Cross make an official statement in `The Rakyat post' The post about red cross workers is correct, note that Irina Tsaryuk of the Red Cross made the statement:

Ok reread Reuter's article and it quoted a red-cross member mentioning beatings so it sounds legit. I wasn't claiming EuroMaidanPR was wrong in this case, but a lot of their posts need to be fact-checked cause they post anything anti-separatist/Russian without care for veracity (at least on their facebook feed).

A cyber-attack was held on the Belgium MFA networks. A virus was copying information concerning Ukraine. Belgium MFA and newspaper L'Echo were referenced.

Big TV news are pretty good, like 1+1, STB, ICTV. They don't deliberately lie like the Russians do, but sometimes they post unconfirmed stuff and jump to conclusions. You can clearly see where their sympathies lie, but that is hardly surprising considering the shit that is going on. And they don't have English language news. Mostly all Ukrainian sorces in English are just reposting stuff, like I am.

That's why I also posted two more articles from two very different sources as well (I always do, btw). Something like this can hardly be fabricated by Ukrainian media alone when other news sources from across the board are also reporting the same thing.

Harmed or not, there is still no legal precedent for the separatists to arrest them for any period of time.

Separatists are arresting/intimidating anyone how is foreign with seemingly no regard for affiliation or reason. It perfectly fits into the picture they are painting of themselves.
It ignores such insignificant forces as time, entropy, and death

They're getting very desperate that's for sure.

I feel like after Putin gave them the middle finger, all the separatists are trying to do at this point is to force his hand into intervening with one fiasco after another.

I'd like to make a little but, I believe, important remark: there is no reason to call oppositioners as Pro-Russian militants constantly. Actually, I haven't heard that the Eastern Ukraine wants to join Russia like Cimea did. They are not Pro-Russian, they are just civil, they want a better life than the current goverment has to offer. I don't listen to the media much, neither Russian nor Western, they are all biased and it's okay actually. But try to think as if you were a common person from the eastern Ukraine, you have relatives in Russia (it's very common) and you speak Russian whole your life and at the one moment appears a group of people who claim themselves your goverment, though you have never voted for them or supported them anyhow, and prohibit Russian language, call Russian your worst enemies etc, while this group of people has nothing to offer, they seeded chaos making things even worse. The eastern Ukraine is more favorable then the western, most part of factories and natural resources are in the east. Would you be happy to share the little that you have with this group of people? How do you expect it gonna go? It can go different ways, but common peope will lose for sure, while people from the new goverment will get rich.
I don't think they are pro-Russian, it's comfortable for western media to call them so, but, according to what I've heard from my friends about their relatives from Ukraine, they fight for themselves and what's going on now is really a pity.

@mortales

"prohibit Russian language"
-false (they attempted to reverse a law passed a few years ago concerning making Russian official language. Wasn't signed into law. It was a stupid decision to try to reverse it given the situation)

" there is no reason to call oppositioners as Pro-Russian"
- constantly calling for Russia to help/intervene. Chants of "Rosija, Rosija" at rallies, burning Ukrainian flags?

"I don't listen to the media much"
-not surprised

"they are just civil"
-... ? You mean civilians? Yeah most of them are civilians, but many of them are armed and capturing journalists, killing people, etc. You actually meant "civil"...? I don't think I need to respond to that.

I agree with the fact that they have legitimate concerns, but armed rebellion given the fact that there will be new elections in a couple weeks is ridiculous.

I suggest avoiding to "downplay" stuff, i would not call somebody beaten to hospital "unharmed". In fact, propaganda would be what you're doing right now.

Hardly surprising to be honest. If they found 100k of these, I guess there is still about 2.9m left somewhere. Afterall the results will have to say 99.5% in favor, right?
