WIRED has an article that is better I think than the Guardian. And seeing how DARPA has been working on Missile defense since it's founding, 59 years ago, one wonders how many obstacles have actually been solved. One that six decades of work has yet to find an answer for.

THE UNITED STATES successfully tested its interceptor missile defense system on Tuesday, essentially shooting an incoming missile out of the sky. An impressive technological feat to be sure, one the Pentagon likens to hitting a bullet with another bullet. But as proof that such a system could defend the US against a North Korean attack, it still misses the mark.

Think instead of the $244 million test as a competent recital, a choreographed display of US missile defense capabilities under optimal conditions. It leaves open the question of how the so-called Ground-based Midcourse Defense system would perform under real-world conditions—and how North Korea might respond to this latest demonstration of a system that US has spent almost two decades testing.

The US first tested this descendant of Reagan-era “Star Wars” missile defense ambitions in 1999. It works on a fairly straightforward underlying principle: Hit an incoming missile hard enough to destroy it.

It does this by launching a rocket, which in turn releases a “kill vehicle,” a smaller device with four onboard thrusters and internal guidance systems that send it careening into the incoming missile. The kill vehicle doesn’t carry explosives, it just packs a punch.

Simple enough in theory. The reality is a different matter.

“The ICBM that’s incoming is expected to be going 15,000 miles per hour. The interceptor will be going on the same order, maybe a little slower,” says Laura Grego, senior scientist and global security specialist at the Union of Concerned Scientists. “You’re trying to line up these refrigerator-sized things in space at the same place at the same time. That’s a tricky thing to do.”

That explains the mixed results seen thus far. The US has tested the interceptor system 19 times since 1999, succeeding about half the time. The most recent test, three years ago, marked another success, but three prior attempts fizzled. That kind of success rate is troubling, given the meticulously managed conditions. “These tests are scripted for success,” says Philip Coyle, senior fellow at the Center for Arms Control and Prevention and former head of the Pentagon’s test and evaluation office. “What’s been surprising to me as that they have failed as often as they have in spite of that.”

The US Missile Defense Agency conducts the tests, and scripts the conditions carefully. “The defenders had significant information about the target ahead of time,” says Grego. “They know what it looks like, they know when it’s coming”—factors the Pentagon almost certainly won’t know if North Korea or anyone else lets one fly.

The tests also don’t account for decoys and countermeasures that could throw off the missile defense system—tactics that include technology that confuses the launch-detecting radar systems or infrared sensors aboard the interceptor, or a simple balloon traveling alongside the incoming missile’s reentry vehicle.

All of which amounts to more caution than confidence, a note sounded even by the Pentagon. “Initial indications are that the test met its primary objective,” said Vice Admiral Jim Syring, director of the US Missile Defense Agency, “but program officials will continue to evaluate system performance based upon telemetry and other data obtained during the test.”

In other words? It worked today. But that doesn’t necessarily mean it will work tomorrow—or when the US truly needs it.

Makes me wonder that if staff don't want to tell him about the typo/incomplete tweet due to upsetting him.

I have to say, being able to shoot a missile with enough precision to make that intercept is genuinely impressive. Sure, it's pretty far from any practical intercept of even the most peasant ICBM, but in and of itself that's something. I kind of wonder what kind of missile they used though...

If it did turn out that Trump met his end while shitposting about the media on twitter, I don't think his supporters would have it any other way.

So I think this monster is the missile: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ground-Based_Interceptor

And since it became relevant again, I'll link the old LATimes articles on this MDA program:
http://www.latimes.com/nation/la-na-missile-defense-20140615-story.html
http://www.latimes.com/projects/la-na-missile-defense/

While from a technical perspective there is certainly something to appreciate in these intercepts, there is basically no way that this project will be able to intercept a real nuke any time soon.

7D chess narrative: Trump posts intentional mistake to his Twitter to make it seem more human and relatable, especially to senior citizen voters who also struggle with technology, and who otherwise might have some healthcare-related beef with him.

Alternate 7D chess narrative: Trump has an elite team of communications experts carefully hammering out every word in his tweets. This one was to throw off the scent about how manufactured his Twitter is.

But no, it's probably just a funny typo.

Maybe I'm stupid, but I don't think it's easily understood. I can tell it's a rant, but I have no idea what the last word was meant to be. It looks to me like he accidentally posted mid-sentence and meant to say more.

Is it newsworthy? No, a lot of the stupid stuff he does isn't. But at a certain point people lose the benefit of the doubt and get criticized over every possible thing.

How can you not understand that it is meant to be 'coverage' ?

Man, I really hope he didn't die mid-tweet. I don't want this shitshow in the US to end. I suppose GoT will be on again soon to amuse me, but what will I do after that's done?

Another LATimes report on the same program: http://graphics.latimes.com/missile-defense/

This one provides a bit more detail on the attempted programs under the missile intercept idea's wings. In case anyone cares.

"Despite the evil media's coverage we are doing amazing #MAGA" or something of the sort.

I have to admit though, it's a bit funnier than I originally gave it credit for, so whatever.

One of Trunp's more endearing aspects is knowing it's almost certainly Trump tweeting badly in the middle of the night. Clinton, as a randomly picked counter example, would've had a ten-member team deliberate over it for an hour and post thirty emails later. But with Trump it's Trump being Trump for better and mostly for worse.

Wonder the reason why stopped mid sentence was, and why it hasn't been deleted yet.

New season of House of Cards is up, if you have Netflix.

And never did I ever imagine that show would let me escape from reality like it does right now. Oof.

a question for ya'll missile experts - if interceptors have, say, a 1/2 - 2/3 chance of landing a successful hit, why not just launch multiple at a target?
