It seems to me like we're in a spot where clearly something went way wrong and the US cornered itself into electing one of two candidates that is hated by a large proportion of the electorate. At this point I have to assume that if his presidency is as obscene as his campaign, the Democrats just have to find some random schmuck with a minimum of credibility and they'll take it in 2020.
Surely we can't get 8 years of this fucking mistake.
Trump might not go for re-election, and if life is good, they could win with someone like Paul Ryan.

You mean like get rid of the Voting Rights Act, implement voter ID laws, gerrymander the districts, deny territories a say in their government, and restrict voting hours/early voting?

My point if it's that's the shit they come up with during a democrat presidency it seems like it could get a whole lot worse under a government that doesn't bother with checks and balances and just does whatever the fuck it wants to promote its own interests.

I think those exits are unlikely to hold up. You just have to look at the racial makeup of the places where Trump out-performed the most to see that. Here, Nate Silver said it better than I did:
"The national exit poll shows Trump making bigger gains among black and Hispanic voters than among whites. But I’d urge at least a little caution. I know that exit polls aren’t supposed to be used for projecting results, but they did an awfully bad job tonight, initially showing what had looked like a near-landslide margin for Clinton. Furthermore, as compared with pre-election polls, Trump clearly overperformed the most in whiter states. So on second thought, maybe that’s a lot of caution and not just a little."

PA would be the state that makes the call here. Michigan is possible for Clinton, NH is within 0.1% but once PA is called (even if she wins PA it's still just the 269 scenario and she loses that) it's over.
