Part of it is a way to "stick it" to those who dislike him. This is why the negative coverage by the media is actually backfiring in some parts - "Oh, you hate this guy? I hate you, that must mean he's awesome"
Part of it is simply just loving tyrants. A good portion of it is also hating Hillary Clinton.
Looks like we're about to be in for Trump taking credit for all of the coat-tails of Obama's decent work on the economy.

This is where I question the idea that Bernie would have done a lot better. Trump's mostly overperforming in rural areas, which isn't where Bernie would have outperformed Clinton.
