Trump's the one who has made it a media issue with his response. The Clinton campaign thinks it's a national issue that Trump is a petulant child running for the highest office.

This is the same thing as the situation with the Khans where it would actually be a complete nonissue if Trump just let it go and didn't say anything, but because he decided to act like a total buffoon instead, people are actually starting to care.
Whether his initial set of actions was offensive in any way doesn't really matter, even though that's what everyone's actually going to argue about. What matters is that the man is literally losing sleep over even a minor sleight against his character. It reinforces the consistent line of attack that Trump does not have the temperament to calmly and rationally make decisions for the country when under pressure.
It's especially ironic when he's the candidate who's ostensibly representing the anti-PC crowd.

One can comment on the look of a person in a beauty contest, in a respectful manner. Do you think 'Miss Piggy' is an acceptable comment?

Alicia Machado did pose topless for Playboy magazine, though. http://www.snopes.com/alicia-machado-adult-star/ I didn't say she was a porn star. I said she cheated on TV, which I rate as MOSTLY TRUE since she and her then-fiance split.

I mean I'm not buying this insulting a bodybuilder for having too much fat is sexist. I'm totally on board with it being an asshole thing to do, particularly to a public venue if said in a rude way, but it's not sexist. At least not any more than these competitions and their viewers are in the first place.

He attacks people with the purpose of inflicting damage. Women get damaged when you comment on their looks, men get damaged when you comment on their energy or their height/stature/wealth. If you come at him, he will strike back and uses different tactics for different genders, so I guess you could technically say he is discriminating, but that is because he understands the effect of insults based on gender are different. I perceive sexism to mean judging/insulting someone unfairly because of their sex. Assuming a woman is weak, over-emotional, etc. Insulting someone because of their looks, you could kind of argue, has nothing to do with gender. An ugly is an ugly. Since you can evaluate a man and a woman based on attractiveness in all the same ways, what makes judging looks sexist? I don't see what is sexist about it other than the qualities a woman is judged on are different than a man, simply because they are physiologically different. A man's chest can be criticized, but a man's chest is expected to look differently than a woman's. It's not sexist to judge a woman's chest differently. It's just that women's chests have different qualities. At the end of the day, it is judging looks, right?

That Trump was so easily and severely triggered by such a minor comment is what really makes this so bad. Politicians and people in general insult others all the time, often stupidly, but if you react to a minor slight with a hissy fit you're the idiot here.
It would be like if I made a slightly unflattering comment towards one of the other posters here and they would write long posts trying to prove how terrible I am and spend pages upon pages holding a grudge. One person looks particularly stupid in that situation.
