WASHINGTON, Sept 13 (Reuters) - President Barack Obama will announce steps to bolster access to financial aid for students as part of efforts to make college more affordable, the White House said on Sunday.
Among the measures Obama will announce in Des Moines, Iowa, on Monday will be allowing aspiring college students and their families to apply earlier under the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA. The FAFSA application helps determine eligibility for federally supported student loans as well as Pell Grants, a federal need-based student aid program.
Under the initiative to be announced by Obama, students will be able to file FAFSA applications in October, the start of the college application process, rather than having to wait until January.
Students also will be able to electronically retrieve tax information filed for a previous year rather than waiting until tax season to finish their applications.
"Learning about aid eligibility options much earlier in the college application and decision process will allow students and families to determine the true cost of attending college - taking available financial aid into account - and make more informed decisions," the White House said in a statement.
Spiraling student debt has become a growing national concern, with student loans now totaling some $1.2 trillion, making them the second largest form of household debt after mortgages.

as someone who goes to a community college and sees the amount of people waiting around for financial aid and stuff. I hope this fixes the problem a bit. Seems reasonable and I don't see how earlier information can be a bad thing.
also yeah. fires in California, not a big deal. Basically you just ignore them until someone tells you to evacuate. Then again I live in the city.

IOWA AND NEW HAMPSHIRE
The new poll finds Sen. Sanders with 52% support among Democratic primary voters in New Hampshire, while former Secretary of State Clinton, long considered the front-runner for the 2016 Democratic nomination, receives 30%. Recent polls have shown Sanders’ lead growing in the Granite State, but this would be the first to show the Vermont Senator over 50%.
Possibly more worrying for the Clinton campaign is her performance in Iowa, where Sanders now leads by 10 points, with 43% to Clinton’s 33%. Source
Did a double take when I saw these polls. Holy shit man, I can't believe Bernie is doing so well. Is he the front runner? No; but if he somehow wins Iowa and NH... all bets are off.

Edit: I wrote a longer post but now I'll make it shorter. Bernie's been rapidly gaining on Hillary ever since he joined the race. At no point was there a sign of this process stopping. The obvious result of rapidly gaining without stopping is overtaking. I feel that the media has been disingenuous about this campaign. You can't say with any authority that someone who is rapidly gaining has no chance to win until you see them stop gaining, which never happened.

I am really becoming suspicious of all these polling agencies that seem to get their pool featured in whatever article wants to make a specific point. I don't know who YouGov, but polling lords Five Thirty-Eight gave them a C+.

A lawyer for Kentucky clerk Kim Davis on Monday said that her legal team will file a new lawsuit against Kentucky Gov. Steve Beshear (D), accusing him of failing to provide an accommodation for Davis.
Harry Mihet, a lawyer with the conservative Liberty Counsel, told reporters that Davis is happy to allow her deputy clerks to issue licenses to gay couples and "does not want to defy the orders of the federal court." But Mihet said she will not authorize the licenses herself.
Davis altered the Rowan County marriage licenses to remove her name, title and authority upon returning to work on Monday, according to Mihet. She has "grave doubts" about the validity of the licenses issued while she was in jail and those without her name, Mihet said.
Davis' lawyers will also continue to pursue litigation previously filed by Davis. On Friday, her legal team filed a petition asking the the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals to stop the district judge's order demanding that Davis and her office to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples.

So she is trying to get an accommodation to get her name removed from licensees but while also saying if they don't have her name on them they are invalid?

The Republican presidential candidate Scott Walker was due on Monday to call for sweeping restrictions on organized labor in the US, as he sought to take his efforts against unions as Wisconsin’s governor nationwide.
At a town hall meeting in Las Vegas on Monday, Walker was due to propose eliminating unions for employees of the federal government; making all workplaces “right-to-work” unless individual states vote otherwise; scrapping the federal agency that oversees unfair labor practices; and making it more difficult for unions to organize.
Such measures would in effect demolish the landmark 1935 National Labor Relations Act.
Many of Walker’s proposals are focused on unions for workers in government; others would also affect private-sector unions. Labor law experts say such an effort, if successful, would substantially reduce the power of organized labor in America.
While Walker could enact some of the proposals via presidential executive order, others would require an act of Congress or changes in federal regulations. Walker’s goal is “to achieve fairness and opportunity for American workers”.
“This will not be easy,” Walker said in a statement to the Associated Press. “Many including the union bosses and the politicians they puppet have long benefited from Washington rules that put the needs of special interests before needs of middle-class families.”
Unions responded to Walker’s proposal with dismay and anger.

Yes, an assault on labor unions nation wide. Not a careful review of unions that are abusive, corrupt or damaging the local government's ability to operate. That would be to nuanced and required critical thinking. Lets undo a law created in 1935 when employees had almost no right and just assume that it will all work out.
For middle class families. No way this befits the rich and only them.

Walker isn't going to be elected, but his campaign is an unfortunately good soapbox from which to say stupid things

Have to say this...Bernie Sanders is doing all the wrong things and I think its because he's the right person. He is going to speak in places that are hardline conservative and reaching out to them...most successful candidates have done the opposite and especially in the primaries.
There are a couple interesting Republican candidates and Bernie on the other side. This could end up really bad with Trump vs Clinton or it could end up being amazing.

Bernie will go where there is a stage.
I know Rand Paul was at Berkeley a while back, but it wasn't some large school organized speech. And it was about the NSA, so he found some common ground there.
I wonder how many liberal universities would or have invited conservative speakers. There are cases of them being "uninvited" after they were announced, but that's all I know. And Berkeley couldn't even put up with Bill Maher. Of course in that particular instance I can hardly blame them.

Interesting, what is he doing that is wrong. I find his moves to be quite shrewd.

Not entirely true, getting rid of the Union in the facility I work at would make my job way easier and I'm sure help our facility make budgetary goals as it would be easier to fire the slackers.
I make less than 100k so I'm far away from the upper class..

I think his point was to say that indiscriminately busting unions, and making it practically impossible to form them would shoot past its goal of getting rid of the bad apples (presumably, the union you're talking about is one such bad apple), and remove necessary protection of employee rights.

The common strategy is to go after the more liberal or conservative part of your party in the primaries and then go more central in the election. Bernie is actually reaching out to people who are not likely to vote in the democratic primaries at all and so in that way it gains him almost no advantage now for the time spent.
I think I probably disagree philosophically with about 50% of what Bernie believes in, but I feel like I could vote for him without feeling like I was signing on the line to support the killing of innocents around the world and selling out to the massive money interests.

I understand his general point, I just don't like those broad overreaching statements like his last one, that only the rich could possibly benefit from the busting of a union.

There is no need for Bernie to move to the left of Hillary or the others he is the left. What he is doing is taking actions that make him appear more Presidential, which is a major reason many Democrats are not supporting him (they don't think he can win the general).
