Hi, I've been having a slight issue that I was hoping Blizzard could fix. Maybe others have solutions but I think it's more of an internal game issue. On Battlenet, I have changed all my control group and camera save bind buttons from ctrl to alt, so I would bind army groups, for example, with Alt+1,etc. I've been using a program called Autohotkey to swap the functions of Ctrl and Alt, solely for the purpose of using Alt + click to select all units of the same type. Also, to disable Alt + F4. Basically AutoHotkey has been buggy recently, I guess due to the revamp of Battlenet, etc. Regardless, my hope was that Blizzard could implement a small change that allows players to swap the functions of Ctrl and Alt without a third party program so that people that like to use Alt to bind control groups can also use Alt to select all units of a certain type, the same way Ctrl+click does. It seems insignificant but it just makes sense for your bind key to also be the key for selecting units of a certain type. This probably doesn't matter to most people since most people use Ctrl anyway, but I just recently started using Alt and it just feels so much smoother for me, except for this one drawback. I know you can just double click to select units on field but it's also for selecting/deselecting units such as larva, eggs, workers, etc, from a group via the unit icons from your command card. Anyway, it's a simple change I hope Blizzard can make. I know most people don't care, this is more of just a shot in the dark hoping Blizzard can notice I guess. Also, sorry I don't know what forum this would go under.

Perhaps you could consider buying a Mac keyboard? You could set hotkeys to Command+# which would essentially be the same as Ctrl+#
I'm sure that there's a program out there that lets you remap keyboard keys. And I'm nearly 100% sure that it would be alright because it would be mapping keys to 1 click per action.

I'm pretty sure that even works with Windows tools. Just make your own keyboard layout.
|
Can't you swap them using key bindings? It'll be pretty tedious because your going to have to swap it for each control key but it'll probably be worth it.
|
1. pop off your alt key 2. pop off your ctrl key 3. swap 4. profit??
Haha or you could remap your keyboard. There are plenty of options.. Just google it. Also I wouldn't get a mac keyboard. It's not mean for sc (unless you have like 30apm).
I had a similar problem on my mbp cause fn is the leftmost key and i was use to ctrl. I couldn't remap that because fn was an option even before the bios boot (if i remember correctly), but i remember you could remap every other key on the keyboard -__-.

I want to use Caps Lock as Ctrl. But you can't do that either.
|
Just use a keyboard remapping program. Thats what i did.
|
KeyTweak can do what you ask, albeit switching back and forth requires a restart everytime as it writes changes to the registry.
|
You could also reroute the traces on your keyboard, if you're willing to do some hardware hacking.

Thanks for the help guys. Yeah I guess remapping is the only way. I had already been doing that with AutoHotkey, was just a little buggy recently. It's a shame you can only do it through third party. I have no plans to be a pro or compete in events and stuff but it's just disappointing that stuff like this could be an issue for people that would like do but also have to use 3rd party programs to fulfill their keyboard gaming preferences haha. Crossing my fingers that Blizzard can help out in the future !

As a macbook pro user, this would be really helpful. There is an option in the mac version of sc2 to switch command and ctrl, which is done because the fn key takes up half of the space for the control key on a macbook pro keyboard.
This is all fine and dandy except when playing on a windows machine, for example, at a lan, and you have to retrain your fingers to use control instead of alt (the would be apple key).
Seems like an easy feature to include on the windows version

I also re-hotkeyed all the ctrl hotkeys to alt, but the only one that I haven't been able to swap is the "select all idle workers" hotkey of CTRL+F1. I really wish I could make that ALT+F1...

You can just make a custom hotkey layout with ctrl swapped with alt...
The only things you can't change are ctrl+click and shift+click (atlhough shift+click is obviously not a problem lol).

I have the same issue. I've been wanting to switch shift to the spacebar and control to the U key for a long time, but I'm stuck with using autohotkey, I'm afraid. The problem with creating your own keyboard layout is that windows does not allow for layouts where the function keys, like shift or control, are moved to other keys. All you can do is change where the letters and numbers are.
That being said, if you don't mind having Ctrl and Alt switched when you are doing non SC2 related things (i.e. all the time you don't have SC2 open) then you can edit the registry using a program called sharp keys. Unfortunately, you can't use this program to quickly switch between keyboard layouts as you have to restart for each change to come into effect.
Also, how is it that you find AHK to be malfunctioning since the patch? I still find it to be working just fine.

It seems you've missed the entire point of the thread. The problem stated is that the 'double-click' aspect of Ctrl cannot be assigned to Alt without some third party software or keyboard driver.
